Today Tata Power Company Limited is India’s largest private sector electricity generating company with an installed generation capacity of over 2977 MW. The Company is a pioneer in the Indian power sector. Tata Power has a presence in thermal, hydro, solar and wind areas of power generation, transmission and retail. The founders of Tata Power pioneered the generation of electricity in India with the commissioning of India’s first large hydro-electric project in 1915 in Bhivpuri and Khopoli, Karjat.

The hydro stations are located in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra and the wind farms in Ahmednagar, Supa, Khanke , Brahmanwel, Gadag, Samana and Visapur.[citation needed]

Tata installed India’s first 500 MW unit at Trombay, the first 150 MW pumped storage unit at Bhira, and a flue gas desulphurization plant for pollution control at Trombay.

Has generation capacities in the States of Jharkhand and Karnataka and a Distribution Company in Delhi. NDPL services over one million consumers spread over 510 km2 in the North Delhi area. The peak load in this area is about 1,259 MW, with energy consumption of over 6,900 MUs.[citation needed]

International Operations

The Company has also executed overseas projects in the Middle East, Africa and South East Asia including the Jebel Ali ‘G’ station (4 x 100 MW + desalination plant) in Dubai, Al-Khobar II (5 x 150 MW + desalination plant) and Jeddah III (4 x 64 MW + desalination plant) in Saudi Arabia, Shuwaikh (5 x 50 MW) in Kuwait, EHV substations in UAE and Algeria, and power plant operation and maintenance contracts in Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Strategic Electronics Division (SED)

SED has been in the defence systems and engineering for over four decades. SED works with the MoD and laboratories to provide products and solutions for the defence requirements of the country.

SED has scored a number of achievements including: SED successfully cleared the Joint Receipt Inspection (JRI) for the first two lots of Pinaka launchers and command posts. The third and fourth lots have successfully undergone Factory Acceptance Tests. SED has recorded signifi cant success in the offsets opportunity by clinching fi ve orders worth about Rs. 13 crores from IAI, Israel. Phased deliveries have already started. Phase II of Bengaluru factory upgrade is underway. With increased private sector participation in defence, SED has the necessary credibility and capability to be a long term reliable partner for India’s defence forces.

Tata Power has entered into a 51:49 joint venture with PowerGrid Corporation of India for the 1200 km Tala transmission project. The joint venture is India’s first transmission project to be executed with public-private partnership.[4]

Tata Power has also won a contract for building 4000 MW power plant at Mundra. A unique aspect of this project is that for the first time in India[citation needed] a 4000MW power plant is being built utilizing one large construction project; all other large projects have always involved stage construction.[citation needed][5]

Tata Power has also entered into a 74:26 joint venture with Damodar Valley Corporation for building a 1050 MW coal based thermal power plant at Maithon in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand. Tata Power has also entered into a 74:26 joint venture with Tata Steel Limited for setting up of power plants to meet the captive requirements of Tata Steel, and has commissioned 120MW power plant in Jojobera in 2009 and is further in the process of commissioning another 120 MW.[5]
