The Indian School of Mines (ISM) (Template:Lang-hi) is a fully residential and co-educational university located in the mineral-rich belt of India in the city of Dhanbad, Jharkhand. It was established in 1926 on the lines of the Royal School of Mines, London. What started as an institution to impart mining education has graduated into a full-fledged technical institution of international acclaim offering a host of programmes like B. Tech., M. Tech., M. Sc. Tech.,integrated M.Sc., integrated M.Sc.tech. and MBA. In addition the School offers M. Phil. and full as well as part time Ph.D. programmes, while also awarding D.Sc. as the highest degree of academic achievement.

The institute admits undergraduate students through the Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) and post-graduate through GATE. It has been ranked as one of the top 10 engineering colleges of India by an Outlook India survey. The Indian School of Mines holds the privilege of being an Institute of National Importance in India.

The Indian School of Mines is the only institute of its kind in India that caters to the human resource needs of the nation in the areas of Mining, Petroleum, Mining Machinery, Mineral Engineering and Earth Sciences besides training manpower in the related disciplines of Management, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, applied Science and Humanities and Social Sciences.

The School has links with reputed universities and institutes across the globe and has an alumni base all over the world. The ISM alumni have held key positions in some of the biggest companies in India like SAIL, CIL, ONGC, NTPC, Reliance Industries Ltd, and UCIL.

History

With the Mines Bill becoming a law vide Indian Mines Act – VIII of 1901 the necessity for establishing a government college of Mining Engineering at some suitable place in India on the pattern of the Royal School of Mines was felt by the then Indian Government. The Indian National Congress, the leading political party that was perhaps the sole spokesman of the masses of those days was quick to endorse this view of the government through its resolution taken at the 17th session held at Calcutta in December 1901. A committee consisting of mining experts under the Chairmanship of Macpherson, the Chief Secretary, Government of Bihar and Orissa was formed to study the system of mining education in England. The report of this committee was the main basis for establishment of Indian School of Mines at Dhanbad. The Government of India in 1920 decided that the proposed institution should be an All India Institution financed by the Central Government and be named Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.

The Indian School of Mines was formally opened by His Excellency, then the Viceroy of India, Lord Irwin on 9 December 1926 as the first mineral technology institute in the country. The institute initially offered courses in Mining Engineering, Applied Geology, Applied Physics, Applied Chemistry and Applied Mathematics. In 1957, the institute began offering Petroleum Engineering and Applied Geophysics. Up to 1967 it was a pure government institute where the faculties were recruited through the UPSC Selection Board. ISM had an All India Character and national outlook from the very day of its inception.

The all round achievement by the graduates of Indian School of Mines in nation building was duly recognized and the School was granted university status under the UGC Act in 1967. Later courses in Mining Machinery Engineering and Mineral Engineering were started in 1975 and 1976 respectively.It was among the few institutes to start courses in Industrial Engineering and Management (in 1977), to cater to the needs of industries like metallurgy, mining and manufacturing.

From 1996-97 the School came directly under the Ministry of HRD, Government of India with pay scales and perks to its employees at par with that of IITs/IIMs. In 1997, the institute began admitting students through the Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) conducted jointly by the Indian Institutes of Technology, the Institute of Technology - BHU and the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. In 1998 courses for Electronics Engineering and Computer Science were introduced and in 1999 Mechanical Engineering.

In 2006, ISM added 14 new courses, prominent among them being Electrical Engineering and a course in Environmental Engineering in the undergraduate curriculum. ISM started integrated Graduate engineering and management courses in mining, mineral and petroleum engineering as well which was the first such course offered by any technical institution in India. ISM also started offering Integrated Master of Science and Technology (Int. MScTech) courses for Applied Chemistry, Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics and Applied Physics. In 2011 ISM introduced an additional course in Chemical Engineering.

Campus

Situated in the heart of the country’s prime coking coal belt, 260 km from Kolkata with a campus spread over 88 hectares (220 acres) the fully residential ISM has all the facilities of a world class academic institute. ISM is located at Dhanbad, on the Howrah-New Delhi Grand Chord Railway route. The serene campus comprises academic buildings, student hostels and 100% residential facilities for faculty and staff apart from other infrastructure facilities for a cosmopolitan community. ISM is expanding and is in the process of acquiring new land near the present campus, which will nearly double its area. The campus is currently home to more than 4000 people: students, faculty, and non academic staff.

The Main Building, also popularly known as the Heritage Building houses the departments of Mining Engineering, Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics and Electrical Engineering. In addition it also contains the Geological Museum. The Penman Auditorium near the main building is used for official functions and events while the Golden Jubilee Lecture Theater is used for workshops, presentations and seminars.

Some unique features at the ISM are the Geological Museum, the Seismic Observatory, a Data Processing Laboratory, the Long Wall Mine gallery and the Remote Sensing Laboratory. The lawn in front of the ISM Main Building, besides being exquisitely designed, has several unique features. It has two distinct areas where the grass and the bushes are cut into the shape of the Old Logo & the Crest of ISM. It has the original cannon used to defend this institute from the advancing Japanese troops during World War 2. It also has two rock samples of the oldest known rock formation on the Indian Subcontinent. The lawn is used to hoist the flag during the Independence & the Republic Day of India. It is also used to host the annual flower show at ISM.

Being a fully residential campus, ISM has 10 hostels - six for boys and four for girls. The hostels at the Indian School of Mines are named after famous gemstones. The hostels are as follows:

The ISM accommodates guests of the School at the Senior Academic Hostel. The Executive Development Center (EDC), under the charge of the training and placement cell at ISM, has the facilities to conduct Pre Placement Talks, Group Discussions, Personal Interviews and has well furnished air conditioned rooms to accommodate executives from the industry.

Central Library housing more than 80,000 books, journals and magazines

The Central Library is automated and provides services seven days a week, catering to 3000 users belonging to 15 departments and centers. The library houses 85,000 books, 8000 Ph.D thesis and dissertations, 35,000 bound volumes of journals and 1200 digital books. The library provides access to 2000 full text scholarly research journals. The library collection is available online through a web-based Public Access Catalogue. Creation of databases for the last 80 years collection was started in 2001 after the purchase of library management software called "LIBSYS". The whole library collection is bar-coded.

The Computer Center supports a campus-wide fiber optic network (ATM backbone switch) with 32 Mbit/s International Internet Gateway. It caters to all the computing needs of the faculty members and the students. The center has a number of state of the art servers and an adequate number of Intel Core PCs. The Health Centre provides medical care to students, teachers, staff and their family members. Important hospitals have also tied up for providing assistance in case of emergencies.

Classes for first year students are held at the state of the art Lecture Hall Complex (LHC). The inside of the LHC functions as an Open Air Theater (OAT). The office of the Dean of Students Welfare (DSW) is located inside the LHC. Currently new LHC is under construction and is scheduled to be completed by the mid 2012.

Currently massive construction activities are ongoing in the ISM campus. A new central library, designed to be one of the best libraries in Asia, is under construction. A SAC (Student Activity Center) along with a swimming pool is also under construction. Both these buildings are slated to be completed by mid 2012. Other on campus construction activities include the setting up of a new administration block and expansion of the current Senior Academic Hostel and the Executive Development Center.

Academic programmes

ISM offers courses in engineering, pure sciences, management and humanities with a focus on engineering. The programs and courses offered at ISM are changing as the school evolving into a full fledged engineering university from the earlier focus on mining and earth sciences.

The school conducts educational programs leading to the degree of Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.), Master of Science (MSc.), Master of Science and Technology (M.Sc.Tech.), Integrated Master of Science (MSc.), Integrated Master of Science and Technology (M.Sc.Tech.), Master of Technology (M.Tech.), Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Philosophy (MPhil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.).

Admission to the courses of B.Tech, Dual Degree and Integrated courses are done through the Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (I.I.T.-J.E.E.). Admission to the M.Tech and M.Sc courses are done through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (G.A.T.E.). Admissions to the MBA program is done through the Common Admission Test (C.A.T.). Admission to the M.Sc.Tech. and PhD courses are done through a special examinations conducted by the Indian School of Mines.

Placements

Placements have been generally 100% in most branches with the average offers to earth science engineering students comparable to other noteworthy institutions in the country. Its reputation in earth science has attracted multinational companies such as BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto Group, ArcelorMittal, Schlumberger, Shell, BG Group, Halliburton, Cairn Energy etc. to the campus. The major PSUs of the country such as ONGC, DRDO, OIL, CIL, SAIL, NTPC etc. also visit the campus to recruit. India's biggest corporate houses such as the Tata Group, the Jindal Group, the Essar Group and Reliance have traditionally recruited large number of students from the ISM.

The non earth science students have proved their mettle in companies such as Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Samsung, etc. Companies have started to recognize the potential of such students. Today more non earth science companies visit the campus than earth science companies.

Life at ISM

Students choose between National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS), National Sports Organisation (NSO) and Yoga as extra curricular activities. The campus has good facilities for training in games and sports like athletics, cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, squash and table tennis. Interested students are also trained in combat sports such karate, wu shu and boxing.

Concetto is the annual techno-management fest of ISM Dhanbad. As the name suggests, it is an idea that proves, in the end, to be the spark of all creation.This event, is sure to enthrall you as you witness futuristic marvels of technology and interact with them. It extends beyond the guest lectures, exhibitions, robotics, & management events to impart the excitement, zeal & thrill to such an extent that the black magic of the Pied Piper is belittled and a horde of students nation wide have been bewithced to come and join this event. The delicacies of the technical and management delights, along with the icing of the guest lectures from eminent personalities are enough to entice the knowledge hungry students from institutions all over the country

ISM organize a three day annual sports festival PARAKRAM, in which students from various colleges of country take part. Parakram includes cricket, basketball, volley ball, lawn tennis, table tennis, badminton, athletics and other indoor games. ISM also holds an annual two-day-long sports meet after Republic Day (India) for the students of ISM only. Annual intramural competitions for cricket, football, badminton, table tennis etc. are notable features as is the two-day Annual Sports. Athletic competitions include track and field events, long jump, high jump, pole vaulting, discus throw, javelin throw, shot-put etc. Non-athletic events include sack races, tug-o-wars, and even pillow fights.

On the cultural front, Pratibimb, the annual ten-day inter-departmental Cultural Competition is held in January, with events such as Hindi and English vocals, instrumentals, dance, mime, skits, debates, quizzes, dumb-charades, fashion show, and Antakshari. Musical nights, DJ nights, and Kavi Sammelans also form a part of ISM culture. Other features are the events of SPIC MACAY, painting exhibitions, and Yoga workshops. The annual Basant Utsav is an important date in every ISMites calendar when the students get the opportunity to interact with the alumni, besides being a time for old friends to reunite.

Student clubs include Cultural Scientific and Literary Society (CSLS), Cyber Society, Music Society, Photographic Society and Chayanika Sangh (whose objective is the promotion of Hindi Language). ISM has a technical society for each department at ISM like the Petroleum Engineering Society, the Mineral Engineering Society, the Mining Engineering Society etc.The societies mentioned above function under the purview of the ISM Students Society(ISS) which is the link between the administration and the students.

ISM also has student chapters of technical organizations like the Society of Applied Physics,the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE), the Society of Automotive Engineers(SAE), the Society of Petroleum Engineers(SPE), the PETROTECH Society and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). The SPE, ISM chapter was awarded the Outstanding Chapter Award in 2010 thus deeming this chapter to the best student chapter in Asia. The ISM PETROTECH chapter was awarded the Best Chapter Award for the academic year 2010-2011 amongst all the PETROTECH chapters in India. The SAE organized event Baja SAE has seen some of its best entries from the ISM. The ISM team has repeatedly bagged top awards at the event in India.

Other activities include the voluntary efforts by the students to teach and provide education to underprivileged children under the name of Kartavya (Duty). Kartavya was initiated by an alumnus of the 2003 batch and is entirely managed by the students. Kartavya centres have been established at NIT Jamshedpur, NIT Durgapur, NIT PATNA, NIFFT Ranchi, OIT Burla, BIT Sindri and Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. There are four centers in Dhanbad. In 11 centers, about 700 students have been covered.

Another initiative called Fast Forward India (FFI), an effort to find powerful ways to tackle problems that impact the lives of millions of under-served people in India has been taken. In this ISM students provide computer education and training in spoken English to poor and needy children. They organize blood donation camps and hygiene awareness campaigns for locals, and career counseling programs for school students. The intra Dhanbad inter school quiz competition BRAINSTORM organized annually has generated funds and publicity for FFI.

A monthly in-campus students' newsletter called Mailer Daemon is published by an independent student body. Genesis an entrepreneurship cell has been established, promoting entrepreneurial skills among students. The ISM Energized Toastmasters Club a local club of the Toastmasters International organizes weekly meetings for the purpose of helping members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills. Indian Youth Climate Network (IYCN) ISM chapter organizes Green Marathons, Cleanliness Drives, Sapling Plantation drives and various other competitions at ISM to promote awareness about the environment.

A popular tradition at ISM is that of juniors addressing their seniors as Sir and Ma'am. The seniors are then honour bound to foot the juniors' bill at the canteen inside ISM. A tea shop at ISM named RD (Ram Dhani after its late founder) is an integral part of the lives of students and faculty. The tea shop has served ISMites for several decades and continues to do so. Students at ISM frequently chant the slogan ISMites are Dynamites while those belonging to the department of Mining Engineering prefer to address their branch as Royal Mining. Embedded in the ISM culture is the rock band MANTHAN, which has performed all over the country. The band members wear the tag of the founders of one of the biggest rock fests in the eastern region of the country. A social network for the students of ISM Dhanbad called ISMile - The ISMites Social Network has grown to include hundreds of members consisting of students as well as alumni of the school.

At a few hours distance from the ISM campus are places for trekking, outings and picnics. Students at ISM frequently make trips to the Parasnath Hills, Maithon Dam, Khandoli and Deoghar, and waterfalls like Johna, Dassam and Hundru near Ranchi, just over 160 km from Dhanbad. Other nearby scenic sites are the Rajmahal Hills and forests like Saranda near Palamu.
