WFGR (Classic Hits 98.7) is an American FM radio station serving Grand Rapids, Michigan. It transmits from their facility in Alpine Township on 98.7 FM. WFGR's licensee is Regent Broadcasting of Grand Rapids, Inc. The station was known as "Oldies 98.7" and played mostly hits of the 1950s through early 1970s until late June 2009, when the station tweaked its format to rock-based Classic Hits and added more music from the 1970s through 1990s. The change leaves the Grand Rapids market without a local outlet for oldies in the traditional sense of the format.
WFGR was previously a classical music station throughout the 1990s, broadcasting the World Classical Network from WFCC-FM in Chatham, Massachusetts. It changed its format to oldies music on October 11, 2004 when Grand Rapids' current oldies station at the time, WODJ, was displaced by rock station WKLQ.
When WFGR debuted its oldies format, it was satellite-fed using ABC Radio's "Oldies Radio" feed, but soon debuted a mostly-local lineup of DJs. Eventually the station became entirely locally originating except for Marty Thompson's Classic Top 40 show, which airs 7pm-midnight on weeknights, and weekend programming such as SuperGold with Mike Harvey Saturday nights and John Records Landecker's Into the '70s on Sunday nights. Morning host Len O'Kelly is a veteran of WODJ, and was production director at the late WRLL "Real Oldies 1690" in Chicago.
The current weekday on-air lineup on Oldies 98.7 includes Len O'Kelly and newsman Bruce Parrott mornings; Mark Roberts of sister station WTRV-FM middays; Tom Wyant afternoons; and Marty "With the Party" Thompson's Classic Top 40 evenings. Overnights are locally automated.
