Barisal (Template:Lang-bn) is a district in southern Bangladesh. It is also the headquarters of Barisal Division.

Barisal is located in south-central Bangladesh, formerly a district called Bakerganj, it is now a division. The town lies in the Ganges (Padma) River delta on an offshoot of the Arial Khan River (Kirtonkhola). Barisal town was under the control of the Roychoudhury family, which now has moved to Calcutta. Incorporated as a municipality in 1876 and upgraded to city corporation in 2002.It is linked by steamer with Dhaka (73 miles [117 km] north) and with Chittagong to the southeast. Road communication improved in last decade with building of few bridges.

Due to its location and easy access to both riverine and marine navigation channels, it has become a transshipment centre for rice, hides, and pulses. Bakery, textile, pharmaceutical products are output of a few industrial installation.

The city is also home to some of the country's most prestigious schools and colleges including Barisal Zila School(est.1853), Sadar Girls High School, BM school, Udayan High School,Oxford Mission High School , Baptist Mission Boys School, Baptist Mission Girls School, Brojamohun College which is known as BM College, Barisal College, Barisal Women's college, Hatim Ali college etc. Other than these Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital which is the largest Medical College and Hospital of the country is one of the glories of Barisal. There is a polytechnic Institute and a vocational institute in Barisal. A Cadet College is also there in Barisal.

History

Barisal was a semi-independent area in Mughal period. In course of time, it fell under Bengal Nawabs and British India. After British rule it was part of East Pakistan and later Bangladesh. It was formerly known as Chandradip and later it was named as Bakergonj according to the name of a Jamindar named Baker. Later it takes the name as Barisal.

There are many tourist attractions in Barisal, many of which include, Kua Kata, Durga Sagar, KTC, Ladies Park and many more.

Barisal gives its name to a curious natural phenomenon known as Barisal guns, thundering noises heard in the delta and apparently coming from the sea. Barisal is a small cities in Bangladesh,mainly Barisal is surrounded by many river, beside it there is a river name Klrtonkhola. Patuakhali with wide sandy beach and beautiful spot to watch sun rise & set. The rivers Kuakata a scenic beauty spot in district of Lots of small sailing boat, speedboat, troller, steamer, smaller ship passes through this river. The city is also famous for sweets, coconuts, nuts, jute etc. Kuakata is under potuakhali district. one can go Kuakata from Barisal by bus, car or by launch. It's only 90 K.M distance from Barisal to Kuakata. Kuakata is a wide sea beach. The scenic beauty of Kuakata is very nice. every year thousands of tourists come to visit in Kuakata just for its beauty. On the 2 corners of the same horizon of This unusually curved wide sea beach. It is really a beauty of sunset and sunrise it is a very nice place for travel, anyone can see the sunrise and sunset at a time.

Barisal is a city with nearly 0.38 million people and a divisional headquarters, medical college, cadet college, some pharmaceutical industries, textile industries and the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority's head office. Barisal is fast growing city of our country stands on the Kirtan Khola River. Recently, country's first short landing and take off airport has been completed over there in Barisal and a private Airlines named GMG Airlines has begun its regular air flight between Dhaka's International Airport (ZIA, Domestic Terminal) and Barisal.

Barisal had remained a municipality until 2002 when it was upgraded into a city corporation consisting of 30 wards.

Barisal is served by the Barisal Airport which is located just outside of the city. It has frequent flight services to Dhaka via Biman Bangladesh Airlines and GMG Airlines.

The luxarious launch journey connects between the south and Dhaka city. It is one of the most enjoyable night journey ever you could get in you life. The launches are really royal, majestic and with pomp and pleasure.

The present divisional commissioner of Barisal Division is Rumana Tasmin Shanta.

Culture and Places of interest

Just 30 km out of Barisal City is the place called Durga Sagar which is a large pond. Serving as a place for holiday trips for the city's residents, it is also attracts visitors from other places. This is one of the main places of residence for the migrant birds that comes in winter.

Near Durga Sagar are the ancient ruins of the palace of a local Lord (called Jamidar in Bangla). Anyone can have a view of the palaces of this time by the sight of it. It is only a 15 minutes ride on a non-pollutant three wheeler called Van from Durga Sagar[citation needed].

The Bell's Park is a place inside Barisal City, right on the banks of River Kirtonkhola.

Nor far from Barisal city, there is a beach called Kuakata. There is a motel in Kuakata and a place with colorful tribals.

Near Barisal city, over river Kirtonkhola a Bridge is under construction from October 2006 named Dapdapia Bridge.
