On a number of occasions now I've noticed you've made a whole series of benificial but tedious improvements to various currency articles. Just wanted to say a massive thanks for your work on the Election results template. Not only is it a big help for getting some consistency in presentation, but the automatic totalling and percentage calculation has helped identify several errors in the tables (both from editors mistranscribing numbers from sources, and mistakes in the sources themselves) by comparing the automatically-calculated totals/percentages with those given in the original tables/sources. Nomination for deletion of Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary

From my talk page back in september.

Bugger bugger bugger, I saw a map in the transport museum in budapest we went the other week and it had the lat and long but in pretty much a mercator projection. My missus was more interested with the toy trains so I didn't get a chance to take the measures off it. If it's wrong (as it is) it should be deleted but I am still trying to get the measures right. The thing is it's specifically Kingdom of Hungary, but the more atlases (atli? :) I look at the more different lats and longs I get. And anything one does on Hungarian articles is rather contentious, so it is probably really better deleted. Because people whose great grandfathers were part of the Kingdom of Hungary will say no that's Croatia or Slovakia or Slovenia or Yugoslavia or Jugoslavia or The People's Republic of East Kebab. Since Hungarian politics is very contentious and goes on racist grounds in far more than would be allowed in where I come from, this is better off deleted. (Hint: say Treaty of Trianon to a Hungarian and await results.) Si Trew (talk) 09:36, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hungary ethic groups.jpg
I never did get round to this. I took the coords off of file at right, which is very high quality but seems to have an odd idea of where 0 longitude is (it suggests it is east of Paris, but that didn't seem to work). As you suggested, I tried to take well-known points at the edges of the map: Fiume, for example, at south-west. I took very good readings after printing out this map at A0 size and using ruler and compass, my trig is quite good, but I could never get it to fit. Si Trew (talk) 06:02, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
.Oh, Template:Location_map_Kingdom_of_Hungary/test might help you. You see, Fiume's in the right place but Budapest is a bit too far left and the rest are well out. Si Trew (talk) 06:09, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That map uses the Paris meridian. It's not a Mercator projection, the lines of latitude aren't quite parallel. Maproom (talk) 20:09, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom, thanks for the tip. I have written code for generating coefficients for nonlinear projections if I know the functional form. but, the code requires at least as many reference points as there are coefficients. basically a nonlinear least-squares algorithm. the problem here is that other than the reference markings on the side of the map, it's tough to get reference points in the middle. Frietjes (talk) 21:18, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Si Trew, should we just give up on Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary and have it deleted? Frietjes (talk) 21:20, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
How many do you need in the middle? You get get a reference point near each corner by specifying where the nearest line of (Paris) longitude would cross the nearest line of latitude, and use towns like Szolnok (which Google Earth says is 47°10'N 20°11'E Greenwich) in the middle. Maproom (talk) 21:37, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom, now that I look at it again, I think we have enough with the two interior intersection points and the points along the edges. the original question was about the image in Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary which is less clear. for File:Hungary-ethnic_groups.jpg, I think we can make a working location map. thank you again. Frietjes (talk) 21:42, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Just a thought, maybe not very coherent at this time of night. Using an ethnographic map as a location map may, as Si Trew pointed out, be contentious. Will it help if instead I upload to Commons this map? It uses a Ferro meridian, which is no worse than Paris, and shows enough towns such as Szolnok for central reference points. Maproom (talk) 22:02, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom, that may help. let's see what Si Trew says. my main focus is turning map images into working location maps. I don't really have a strong feeling about the particular map image, so long as it is created with a well-defined projection. Frietjes (talk) 22:06, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Just asking out of curiosity – how do you "turn a map image into a location map"? Do you warp it into the Mercator projection that the template requires? Or do you supply the template with a transform function? Maproom (talk) 07:24, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom, supply the transformation function. see, for example, module:Location map/data/Canada. if I know the functional form and a sufficient number of reference points, I can numerically solve for the coefficients. Frietjes (talk) 12:40, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. It's reassuring to see that things are done in such a sensible and comprehensible way. Incidentally – if you ever find a map image at http://maproom.org/ that you could use in Wikipedia, please let me know and I'll put it on Commons. Maproom (talk) 09:46, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pinging me in on this. I know it was a long time ago. User:Maproom, yes I did guess it was the Paris Meridian all that time ago, but that didn't seem quite to fit either. Since then I took something and with Inkscape made a four-colour map (five if you include Lake Balaton as a fifth colour, blue, but could have been made a fourth colour as those that surround it are all in three other colours, it is just more pleasant to have it in blue but not mathematically necessary) and split out all the layers and borders and so on into separate layers on the SVG. I seem to recall I called it Template:Location Map Hungary2 or something – and I emphasise this is not the Kingdom of Hungary but the modern-day Hungary. All I had left to do was get the text labelling right. Searching for "a new look for an old map" was something roughly want some commenter said, may well have been User:Frietjes here but may not have been (a long time ago, just going from memory: and those exact words are what was printed on the front of the first H C Beck fold-up London Underground Diagram (often called "Map"; Beck himself never called it a map: I have good references for this from publications of the London Transport Museum in woodware) of 1933, so I am probably confusing those words with the same sentiment expressed. This is all such a long time ago, I give as hints for those who can search better than I.
On the plus side, by pure coincidence (these are not common around here in Budapest) my local pub has a nice 1898ish German (I think) map of Austria-Hungary; certainly pre-Treaty of Trianon. This is a five or six colour map and I am pretty sure it is in German but I am going from memory, I don't think it's in Hungarian. It would be about 40 by 25 inches (1,020 mm × 640 mm) and I daresay somehow I could get it scanned in, in one of the largescale printers in the town (who I happen to be also on good terms with, for various other reasons) or just take four A3 scans and stitch them with photoshop, assuming that my scanner doesn't distort too much. I am on good terms with the landlord as I have given him my British registration plates and various other British pub memorablia, it is that kind of pub, very much a "local", so I can ask to borrow the map (it's framed) or just go in on a quiet afternoon with a straightedge etc and try to get some measures off that. I think it is not the same as the image is here, though quite similar. As a start shall I get the maker etc, would that help at all, before I do the trig etc off it? I have a very good straightedge and fifty quids worth of setsquare adjustable protractor that I use for technical drawing on my A0 drawing board, it's about 25 inches (640 mm) long on its hypotenuese, which should be enough to measure angles and distances with some kinda veracity, I am not sure of the projection without looking again. Is it worth me taking a look and reporting back, probably will be about UTC+2 Friday tomorrow, else Monday? If you give me some nice trig points "in the middle" I will do my best to give you the readings off of them. These won't be 100% accuracy but will be within a second of arc or two through the distortion of the glass in the frame, I would imagine. Si Trew (talk) 16:05, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I understand if it is WP:COPYVIO etc but if I check the maker first, it may very well turn out not to be because of the date and also various other "things that have happened since", could well be PD or fair use. I think I check the maker first, that is clear enough in top right corner but don't remember offhand. Would that be of any use, at least to confirm or deny if it's the same as this one? It reminded me of this one, when I first saw it, but I think it is different but of about the same time. Si Trew (talk) 16:40, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
File:Hungary_location_map.svg is the one I made the four-colour svg version of. It just needs tidying on the text labels layer if I remember right, I can't remember its name. The computer it was on is long gone. File:Hungary location map2.svg? Something like that. We have File:Hungary location map-2.jpg on Commons, but that's not it, cos it's not four-colour and has labels in Cyrillic, is a jpg not an svg. Perhaps unfortunately it got deleted as unused. I'd need to ask an admin to dredge from about 2009 onwards. Users working on it would have been mostly me and perhaps occasionally the missus, no longer editing at Wikipedia for many a year due to very harsh and undeserved comments after excellent translations of English articles about the Tudors into HU:WP (something she is an expert in, more than I know and I'm bloody English): Her username was/is User:Monkap. Si Trew (talk) 16:51, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
OK, the map you included wrongfooted me, this is exactly the map that is nominated (duh!) I was looking at the map you included on the right. No, don't give up on it, I'll try to fix it. It is nearly OK, all the coords and borders and counties etc are done on separate labels and I think it is much better than the boring brown map transcluded via {{Infobox Hungarian settlement}}. We just need to fix the edges and fix the text-label layer for some reason the font doesn't scale properly, I never did work out why, I shall try again. One reason to separate into different layers in a good GIS fashion is so that with a flick of the wrist one can turn off all the labels, turn off e.g. the county borders, make all the counties brown and just fill one particular county in a different colour (for Hungarian county articles) etc etc etc. I hand-edited the XML for the SVG to make it all nice, it's much much nicer than its predecessor for putting into a GIS etc because each county edge and county border and county name etc is labeleed in a very consistent fashion. The underlying SVG is File:Kingdom_of_Hungary_counties-2.svg. The polygons for the borders go actually in a kinda "cogwheel" order so that some going anticlockwise have their boundaries against the others going clockwise, rather in a toothed gearwheel manner, but that was just my pedantry; each county actually has its own borders as it did on the original, but on the original the borders for e.g Budapest to Pest County were a bit different from the borders of Pest County to Budapest, i.e. there was a gap or overlap, which now there is not in "my" version, they have all the coordinates bang on, as I did them all in hand in the XML not with some "snap it roughly to where it looks right" tool. All the bordering points have the same coords but the opposite directions (clockwise or widdershins) which helps the SVG polygon fill get it right without overlap or gap.
I think we should keep it and try to fix the labels and the "fix" coordinates for it. I suppose this was a labour of love but I think it does make it better than what is used in the infobox, it scales except for the text labels and the old one has errors in the border coords that leave gaps or overlaps, it just doesn't seem so at the scale used in infoboxes, as the rendering of the borders and the pushpins for the places are far larger than the errors, at even a large-screen resolution scale. If you blow it up and print it onto A0 (paper size) is is noticeable. Si Trew (talk) 17:05, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The text labels are fine on my I think 1972 across screen in full view. When I made this I think I had a 1024x768 screen. It's when the labels are all squished they don't scale down properly, and get all scrunched up, I have never quite worked out why. There is a style that governs it, and I tried all sorts of things but none worked. Si Trew (talk) 21:04, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Something I noticed

I was wondering how many tables are possibly not using one of the deprecated sport templates, but a manual header which acts the same, so I've used hastemplate:"Tooltip" insource:/Goals against/ and it found 5,090 results. Probably not all are relevant, but it sure seems there are much more here. It's really a shame a bot can't use your code to help you out here. --Gonnym (talk) 14:51, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Module request

Hi again. Is there a module for the footballers' club statistics table like here? Can you help to built it?--Teacher0691 (talk) 21:39, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Teacher0691, I don't think there is. are those tables only used on the Turkish language WP? or, do you have an example of them in use on this WP? Frietjes (talk) 12:07, 31 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Damallsvenskan seasons article changes

What was going on and what did you do on 2015 Damallsvenskan? I do not recall that the older revisions were such a mess with the league table and broken (?) templates.

And why did you remove the {{Football in Sweden}} template on all articles?

Would be nice if you left a little edit summary ;) Thank you for your hard work. --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 13:29, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your reply! I see. I'm not very initiated in the inner workings and developments of Wikipedia's technicalities, but from what I can gather, in layman's terms, an old sports table system was replaced with a new one. And when the old templates were deleted, the table vanished from the article and left lots of dead code in it.
You, on the other hand, seem very initiated in the matter, and as you also touched on 2020 Damallsvenskan I will take the opportunity to explain myself. I tried to combine all elements of a WDL table into one, using sports rbr table (I don't know how to link to it or even find it anymore), but it clearly isn't designed for that, so I had to haxx it together. I thought we could try that and see what people think, and if people are positive, some(one) could write some proper code for it. I forgot to mention it in the edit summary.
Why did you change the "style" parameter on the standings table from football to WDL? Is that what it's called now? It's a standings table, not a WDL table, very unintuitive and confusing.
I have a large draft on another computer with lots of pre-season info going into the overview section. New dates have recently been set. It will start at the end of June, so I will try to get it up by then. --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 23:50, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Mango från yttre rymden, the style template is Module:Sports table/WDL where WDL = "win draw loss" since not all football seasons have draws. there is also Module:Sports table/WL for football seasons without draws. if there is a problem with Module:Sports rbr table, let me know and I can work on it, but so far it seems to be working for 99.9% of all football articles which have round-by-round results tables. Frietjes (talk) 22:32, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I see now about the style parameter.
I was using this example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Module:Sports_rbr_table#Example_3:_Team_combined_table but with all teams in the division in one single table, not just one team with the team name put in the table title like the example shows. The module clearly isn't really made for what I was doing in 2020 Damallsvenskan. It works, but I kinda had to duct tape it together with lots of label rows with a new number for each row, making it difficult to keep track of what value is for what team. Would be much easier if all values regarding one team had the same number. Like "Ground1" and "Position1" perhaps. Do you see what I'm going for? Could it be modified into what I would like to have it, or something like it? If you are a coder I'm sure you can come up with a good solution, but I'm not sure I have made myself apprehensible. The whole concept is quite ambitious from a user and article standpoint, but I thought it could be tried at least. Or do you think it's just stupid perhaps? --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 14:28, 26 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
we were working on something related here, where one could put the position/ground/result in one table and then select which to show. here, it sounds like you want to have all three show at the same time for all teams? I had stopped working on it because I thought no one was seriously interested. but, I could work on it some more if you are interested. Frietjes (talk) 14:34, 26 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
"here, it sounds like you want to have all three show at the same time for all teams?" Exactly. It's just an idea on my end, I don't know if there's any interest. I was thinking that I would do it on 2020 Damallsvenskan either way, as a proof on concept, and get peoples opinion, and if people liked it, it could be pitched to someone working on that stuff (like you? :) ) to implement functions for it in the module properly. I could start with your opinion. Since you've already thought about it and perhaps worked a little bit on it, then I guess I'm not the only one thinking along those lines ;) The thing you discussed in "Consistent data" looks really cool, but that is more about logistics, having one template on multiple articles and thus lessen editing burden, as I understood it. --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 20:20, 26 June 2020 (UTC) I also edited my previous message to make it more clear.[reply]

One module

Hey, Can you help me with the following problem. Namely by creating a module. I would like to process these (footballbox, footballbox2, footballbox3 en Tabel voetbalwedstrijd) four templates in one module, because the templates are very similar. This module must be in Dutch. Yours sincerely, BT1985 (talk) 20:42, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I had hoped to have one module here as well, with Module:Football box and Module:Football box collapsible using the same code, but there are differences in the output. I will take a look at the Dutch templates/modules when I have some time. Frietjes (talk) 21:07, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's good, but I've looked into that too. What I saw was that it can be used as a base. I think it was translated from English to Dutch in the past, but it has been adapted over time. BT1985 (talk) 21:22, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
When making this module, you use a separate computer program for that, if so which one. Or how do you usually do that. BT1985 (talk) 17:28, 2 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
BT1985, if there is already a module that does something similar, you can start by copying that module and modifying it (providing attribution in the edit summary). If there isn't a module that does something similar, I start from something very simple, like
local p = {}

p.main = function(frame)
     return 'Hello world!'
end

return p

which displays "Hellow world!" when called with {{#invoke:ModuleName|main}}. If you want to get started by copying one of the existing football box modules, and tell me what needs to be changed to make it work for the NL wiki, I would be happy to help. Emptying categories

Hello, Frietjes

Did you empty all of the railway station categories that appear on Wikipedia:Database reports/Empty categories, like Category:Stations on the Shenyang–Jilin Railway? Rather than emptying categories it would be better to propose them for deletion, renaming or merging at WP:CFD. Otherwise it is considering emptying categories "out of process". Did you replace these categories with different ones? Some of these categories have existed for many years so recategorizing a field like this would be better if it was the subject of a discussion at CFD. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 04:55, 7 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Liz, no I didn't empty the category, unless there was some strange mechanism that was populating it that I inadvertently altered. can you provide a link to an article that was in the category? the article linked in the category doesn't appear to have every existed. Frietjes (talk) 14:24, 7 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think I see what happened, Template:CRH lines and Template:CR lines automatically categorize articles, but Module:Adjacent stations doesn't have an article-space-only mechanism for that. it looks like Template:CRH lines and Template:CR lines are the only lines switch templates that do that. it is possible to have Module:Adjacent stations add categories, but not restricted to article space. per WP:TEMPLATECAT it's better to add the stations to the categories explicitly. Eagles247, I think so. I have started working on it, testing in Template:NFLDraft-row/testcases. the new implementation is in Module:NFL Draft, which implements the header, row, and footer. I still need to do some more testing, but I think it should be ready to go soon, but there are still several expensive templates that need to be sorted out. in particular, if we look in the HTML source for the page, we find

Request for Infobox basketball biography

Hello , I had a query regarding the infobox template Infobox basketball biography/style. As I read the documentation , where it says the infobox of the player will have the color of its current team. So to be more specific, the player Marcus Patterson (basketball) is currently playing for the team Portimonense S.C. (basketball) whose team color are Black, Yellow and White. Request to update Rail-interchange

Hello Frietjes,

Can you help update {{Rail-interchange}} for Moscow, I'm trying to update relevant articles to use Module:Adjacent stations/MOSMETRO. ThankYou -- REEDriler (talk) 15:05, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) since you haven't converted articles to use it yet, it would be better if you use the actual name Moscow Metro for the module. That's 3 more characters but it makes a huge difference in clarity. Gonnym (talk) 16:02, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
ahhh... I don't think i want to change the system name already in place. Most probably its "'Mos'kwa Metro", 'think saw that somewhere. But if someone else does it, I'll follow. REEDriler (talk) 17:34, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
But it's not in place. The module has zero transclusions and the name in English is not "'Mos'kwa Metro", as can be seen by the fact that the article is at Moscow Metro (which btw, "MOSMETRO" is not mentioned there even once). Gonnym (talk) 18:51, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have moved the module to Module:Adjacent stations/Moscow Metro, per the above suggestion. If we need to change every article, it is much better to do so using a clear name than a poorly chosen name from long ago. REEDriler, what part of {{Rail-interchange}} needs to be modified? I do not see any reference to Moscow in that page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:11, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Gonnym I meant the system name in s-rail syntax. Now i regret not following Chennai Suburban Railways which i initially created 🥲 . REEDriler (talk) 03:24, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Adjacent stations

Hi, I saw you started the adjacent stations module for TER Hauts-de-France. I was thinking to use the Krono, Citi and Proxi system like I did at TER Normandie. Do you agree? Speedy deletion of templates

Hello, Frietjes,

You recently tagged a couple of template pages for uncontroversial speedy deletion. I untagged them both because they were just protected today and both appear on User:Naypta/Templates over 500 uses/Semi-protected. I have run into problems before deleting templates that still were transcluded. Also, neither template was included in the TFD discussion that you linked to.

I suggest contact an editor who is familiar with templates, like Izno or Plastikspork to check these out and delete them if that's what should be done. There just too much potential damage that could be done by having admins unfamiliar with templates making a judgment on pages like these ones. The pages might indeed be "uncontroversial" to those who understand templates but can be landmines to those who don't. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 23:41, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Obscure country

Hi. I have been monitoring Category:Wikipedia page with obscure country for quite a while keeping it empty. Today there were some new articles, but the country had not been changed. For instance, this version has had a flag icon but was not in the cat until the next edit which added coords. The cat header says the check is in {{#invoke:ISO 3166|function}}, so is that only used if there are coords and we aren't catching all articles with "obscure countries"? I am pretty sure there is a bot that has been silently purging pages to refresh various database tables, tracking categories, etc. so, that could have triggered the sudden appearance in the tracking category if the edits pre-date the addition of the tracking code. I'm aware of the purges of infrequently edited articles, but this is different. If you go to an article (I just tried this with the one above), change the county to XXXXX and do Show Preview, it is in the obscure country cat. Then remove the coords and check again, it's not in the cat. MB 17:06, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
if you look at the code for Template:Infobox church, you will see this line: {{#if:{{{coordinates|}}} |{{#invoke:Coordinates|coordinsert|{{{coordinates}}}|type:landmark|{{#if:{{{country|}}}|region:{{Country abbreviation|{{{country}}}}}}}}} |}} which explains why you only see it when there are coordinates. if there are no coordinates, then the {{Country abbreviation|{{{country}}}}} is never called. so, yes, in this case we are only catching these if there are coordinates. at the moment, I can't think of other reasons to use {{Country abbreviation|{{{country}}}}}, but if I did some searching I could probably find other uses. hello, do you have any idea how we can fix the above in 2022 French Open – Men's legends doubles:

  • from Legends −45 45+ women to Legends men women
  • -45 & 45+ should be merged to men

I think we need a new type: Template:Infobox tennis tournament event/testcases#type = australianopen. type = australianopen is ok, the only problem is that in the Legends men women has one more ' after legends (legends' doubles instead legends doubles)--Πρέσβης του Βιετνάμ που απελάθηκε (talk) 19:40, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Request to fix List of Ang Probinsyano episodes page due to post-expand size limit.

Hello. Can you please take a look at List of Ang Probinsyano episodes? Much of the references are not displayed as the page has reached the post-expand include size limit due to the very heavy use of templates in place of generic wikitables for the Episodes section. Unfortunately, the source code of that section uses templates that I could not find, for example, {{:Ang Probinsyano (season 1)}}. Perhaps you could please fix that page by directly using the table codes of those templates? Thank you. Sanglahi86 (talk) 09:32, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sanglahi86, in this case, the content is being transcluded from the season articles. when you see {{:Ang Probinsyano (season 1)}} this means include contents of the article "Ang Probinsyano (season 1)". if you look at the source for "Ang Probinsyano (season 1)" you will see all the episodes are wrapped in <onlyinclude>...</onlyinclude>. also, you will see inside of that, most of the references are wrapped inside of <noinclude>...</noinclude>. this indicates to me that the "post-expand include size" problem has happened before, and the solution was to not include the references in List of Ang Probinsyano episodes when transcluding the content from the season articles. checking the list, it looks converting season 8 like this and season 9 partially helps, but now it won't include season 9. as you said, the solution may be to convert those transcluded articles into standard tables. or, at least for the earlier seasons that shouldn't be changing at this point. Frietjes (talk) 14:01, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
this change fixes it. I just copied the episode list from season 1, removed all the references and short summaries, and saved it. not the best, but better than nothing showing. the only other option would be to not include the tables at all. Frietjes (talk) 14:15, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That type of transclusion code is quite complex to me. I have only used {{excerpt}} template and {{#lst:}} in transclusion. I agree these episodes should be converted to standard tables. Thank you very much for the important information and the fix. Regards. –Sanglahi86 (talk) 15:22, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Making {{Progression rainbow}} more accessible

Hello. Can you please take a look at {{Progression rainbow}} on how to improve its accessibility? It is used in WikiProjects but some editors may not know what those colors denote, and since the colors (especially red and orange) are hardly distinguishable at the current bar height. Perhaps add the article class as text within the colors like in {{Category class}}, or if not, at least add title-like attributes so that when the colors are hovered upon, they display which class (B-Class, etc.) those colors indicate? Maybe the bar height also be increased a bit? Thank you. Sanglahi86 (talk) 19:40, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

findargdups error

Hello Frietjes. findargdups malfunctioned in this edit. There were not 2 |alt=s. Additionally according to MOS:CAPTION these captions should be |alt=s because they state the obvious. Invasive Spices (talk) 23 July 2022 (UTC)

There were indeed two |alt= parameters being provided to {{Gallery}}, so there was an error present, but the fix was not ideal. Ira Leviton probably should have changed them to |alt1= and |alt3=, according to the template's documentation. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:00, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Obscure country

Category:Wikipedia page with obscure country is populated by several different infoboxes. Many others don't perform that check. In the ones that don't, U.S. is a commonly used abbreviation (explicitly listed as acceptable in MOS:ABBREVIATIONS). But "U.S." fails the check and can't be used in certain infoboxes. I just ran across this in Church of the Disciples (Boston). That article can be fixed by just using "US". It there a easy/reasonable way to improve this? MB 18:55, 26 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:MB, the valid altnames for United States are on line 239 of Module:ISO_3166/data/National. if you add "U.S." to the list, then "U.S." will map to US like "USA" and "United States". if you are unable to edit that page, make an edit request. Frietjes (talk) 20:15, 26 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Transclusion of infobox content

I hope this message finds you well. I was wondering whether there's an elegant way of transcluding infobox content else. Case in point is the medal tally from New Zealand at the 2022 Commonwealth Games which is also included in the 2022 in New Zealand#Commonwealth Games article. The parameters gold, silver, and bronze are entered into the infobox of the former article and the code then adds the three values to show a total. I mean, I could use Template:Section but there might be a much more elegant way of doing this. You usually have stellar ideas hence I thought I'd ask. Schwede66 08:20, 6 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:Schwede66, I would suggest creating a specialized LUA module that parses the wikitext and extracts the values of |gold=, ... from the infobox in the wikitext. the only reason why this wouldn't work would be if there is too much wikitext to parse. the good thing about this is that it doesn't require adding any special section tags to New Zealand at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. I did something like this when I wrote Module:Calendar TOC. the other simple solution would be to put all the medal counts in a single data module and have both articles call the same data module. Frietjes (talk) 18:06, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Frietjes. put all the medal counts in a single data module – that's an interesting idea! Obviously, the Commonwealth Games are over, but something like that might appeal for the next Olympic Games. If you don't mind, I'll start a discussion about this at Wikipedia:WikiProject Olympics. If there's agreement, we implement that project-wide. Would that be ok? Schwede66 21:40, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:Schwede66, yes, please do start a discussion if you feel like this is something that would be useful. I know for goals at international competitions, there is Module:Goalscorers, where all the goals were put in one module. doing something like that for all the medals would probably be massive overkill, but something more limited, like the medal table without breaking it down by individual or sport, is probably more tractable. Frietjes (talk) 14:32, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Indent tool

Hi, welcome back. It looks like you took a vacation :) If you are looking for something else to do, I was thinking that Indent could remove line breaks per MOS:LISTGAP. I do this manually a lot. I mean if the value has a (<br />) (or any equivalent), replace it with a | and wrap the line with a {{ubl}}. I think the logic is straightforward and I can't think of any cases where doing this would be wrong. MB 18:50, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:MB, I have thought about this. the problem is that the script won't know the difference between a <br> used as a list delimiter, and a <br> used for a visual space. for example, something like John Smith<br>Susan Cho<br>George Washington which is clearly a list, and Smith Prize<br>(1956) where the <br> is visual. so, I could (a) make a script that treats them all as list entries and requires the user to sort them out or (b) require you to somehow mark the list for conversion and the script would convert it to a {{ubl}} for you. Frietjes (talk) 19:38, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If someone is using line breaks as a "visual space", they are still making a list in violation of LISTGAP, no? It just has one entry on one line, then the descriptor as the next list item), etc. I usually leave them like that, unless they fit better one line (either with or without a Nowrap). It depends on the situation. I think (a) is fine since I think the majority wouldn't require to do anything further. MB 19:50, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:MB, replacing | awards = Smith Prize<br>(1956) with | awards = {{ubl|Smith Prize|(1956)}} is wrong, so you would need to correct those if a script converted them. I don't know how to have an automated script skip all the possible bad cases. Frietjes (talk) 20:07, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure why you say it is "wrong". From a code standpoint, it is two items separated by a line feed, hence a two-item list. Logically, it is wrong and I would change it to | awards = Smith Prize (1956). But if I didn't notice or forgot to fix it, the display would be the same as before the script ran. But I am agreeing with you that cases like that should be manually corrected. MB 20:44, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:MB, the {{ubl}} template is for "lists". as someone who uses a screen reader, I can tell you that introducing list markup where there is no list is a horrible idea. it might "look" the same to you, but it doesn't "look" the same for my screen reader. Frietjes (talk) 16:01, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not suggesting that. I'm saying if Indent changed everything to lists - option (a), and the user was left to sort them out, and the even if user made an occasional mistake, overall there is a net benefit. Thousands would get converted to lists (which is good for screen readers). MB 18:53, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:MB, I actually wrote something about six years ago, User:Frietjes/listhelper.js , which shows you the replacements and forces you to agree or cancel each change. Frietjes (talk) 19:10, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Related question. At Caulfield Grammar School, there are multiple locations. When these were wrapped with {{ubl}}, there was a blank line before the country. I "fixed" it by just using commas to separate the locations. Do you know what is going on? It's unusual to have multiple locations for city so this probably doesn't happen much. A case could probably be made to list only the primary campus also. MB 15:03, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:MB, Template:Infobox school uses {{br separated entries}} and {{comma separated entries}}. putting a {{ubl}} after a <br>...</br> results in a blank line. not using the |country= and |country1= fields and putting the country names directly after the city names would fix the problem. the entire box is confusing because the map and coordinates are for one school, not for the entire collection of schools. Frietjes (talk) 15:52, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I agree; I just removed the secondary locations. Thanks. MB 18:43, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there - @Charlesaaronthompson recommended that I reach out. I created the Overtime Elite page and created rosters but was not able to add team names or team colors to the infobox. Would you be able to help? Thanks. Bankrupt305 (talk) 15:30, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Gerald FitzGerald, 14th Earl of Desmond

Dear User:Frietjes, Ultimate Vanguard Editor (> 600,000 edits). You removed the DIV around the "Family tree" on the article Gerald FitzGerald, 14th Earl of Desmond. It would indeed be very nice to get rid of it. I use right-aligned family trees in this fashion since a while (on about 200 articles of Irish biographies). You can see on the article that after your edit, the family tree is, despite setting "align=right", slightly indented with regard to the infobox just above it. This seems to be due to a subsisting right margin, which I remove using the DIV "margin" parameter, thereby improving the alignment of the family tree with the infobox. Real estate is so precious around the top right corner. You are so clever, perhaps you can come up with a way how to properly align the chart without using a DIV. Could it be that this is a bug in the "align" parameter of the Chart? With many thanks and groete, Johannes Schade (talk) 09:19, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Johannes Schade: It looks like the padding numbers were reverse. I think I fixed it should it should be correct now. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 12:43, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I was wondering if you could add the relief option to the module of the locator map of Apulia? The relief map of Apulia is compatible with the module I think, it can be found over here: [40].

Best, Ahmet Q. (talk) 14:43, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

yes, should work now. Frietjes (talk) 14:43, 17 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It does, thanks! Ahmet Q. (talk) 17:33, 17 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you add the limit of 251 subpages at Module:Numbered subpages (Diff 746530529)? — Qwerfjkltalk 14:59, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Qwerfjkl: I probably noticed performance issues, or infinite loops or something. the pre-lua version had a limit of 50. that was a long time ago, so I don't really remember. Frietjes (talk) 15:39, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I created Category:Pages using numbered subpages with over 100 subpages to see if any pages are trying to use more than 249 (assuming I coded the check correctly). a brief insource search shows Portal:Video games/DYK has the largest value for |max= at the moment. Frietjes (talk) 15:57, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I was just curious because I was making User:Qwerfjkl/quotes, and I had to use {{for loop}} instead. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:26, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Qwerfjkl: we could probably remove the limit since there are no pages using anywhere close to the limit right now. Frietjes (talk) 16:27, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I hit the post expand limit here (and that was still capped at 251), but it was fine here (it transcludes 251 pages in that revision). — Qwerfjkltalk 16:37, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Qwerfjkl: okay, so we should set the limit at 251? Frietjes (talk) 16:39, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It depends whether |inline= is used. Testing on a page with no subpages, without inline, it managed 283 pages (I couldn't manage that because the subpages actually contained something). With inline, it managed 1000+. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:46, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
4000+. There should be no problem when using inline. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:48, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Qwerfjkl: okay, I will remove the explicit limit, and let the limit be set by the backend expand-size limitations. any pages with more than 100 will show up in Category:Pages using numbered subpages with over 100 subpages for inspection. Frietjes (talk) 16:51, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if setting the sortkey as the value for max would be a good idea? — Qwerfjkltalk 17:05, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I Need Help!

Hello, Frietjes. I was wondering if you would please help me? I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to remove the wiki-code formatting for the tertiary color codes over at Module:Gridiron color/data so that there is a border that shows up in the NFL & CFL team templates? Specifically, what I'm trying to do is to make the Template:Gridiron alt primary style display a |border= in the |basestyle= of each NFL & CFL team template. Would you please help me? Charlesaaronthompson (talk) 04:34, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Charlesaaronthompson, I don't really understand what you are asking for. when I look at Template:Baltimore Ravens, I see borders for both the primary and secondary style, because it uses |border= while Template:Kansas City Chiefs has borders on the primary style, because it does not use |border= for the secondary style. Frietjes (talk) 15:04, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Frietjes: What I'm asking for is technical assistance in removing the wiki-code formatting for the tertiary color codes over at Module:Gridiron color/data so that the |border=2 shows up in the |basestyle= of each NFL & CFL team template using Template:Gridiron alt primary style. I would like each NFL & CFL team template to use only Template:Gridiron primary style & Template:Gridiron alt primary style. I'm requesting that NFL & CFL team templates resemble MLB & NBA team templates using Template:Baseball primary style & Template:Basketball color cell. Charlesaaronthompson (talk) 18:57, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Charlesaaronthompson, is there a thread where this is being discussed? Frietjes (talk) 19:02, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Frietjes: No, there's not a thread that discusses this that I'm aware of. I was simply trying to be WP:BOLD. If it's not technically possible, then I understand completely. Charlesaaronthompson (talk) 19:24, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Charlesaaronthompson, it's possible, but given the number of people interested in NFL & CFL, I don't see why you wouldn't have a broader discussion first. Frietjes (talk) 19:28, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Frietjes: Fair point. I'll start a discussion over at Module talk:Gridiron color. Charlesaaronthompson (talk) 19:34, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
