It was named after Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, India's first Minister of Education, a freedom fighter in India's struggle for independence, and a scholar of Islam and Urdu literature. The university was established by an Act of the Parliament in January 1998, with an All India jurisdiction. The mandate of the university is to promote Urdu language, provide higher and vocational education through Urdu medium and focus on woman's education.

The university has recently been awarded "A" Grade by National Assessment & Accreditation Council(NAAC). The University has a Directorate of Distance Education where around 15,000 students are on roll in various courses (M.A, B.ed, B.A., B.Sc. and B.Com, different diplomas and certificate courses) all over India and abroad. The University has established an examination centre at Jeddah (K.S.A) & few more are in pipeline at Qatar, U.K. and U.S.A.

The university has a Urdu learning and research institution, Centre for Urdu Language, Literature & Culture at the Hyderabad campus.

Centres

The university has nine regional centres, six sub-regional centres and 169 study centers in various states in India. The university campus has various departments.

  • Department of Political Science & Public Administration
  • Department of Education & Training
  • Department of Translation

Beside these departments the university has established the following centres:

  • Centre for Professional Development of Urdu Medium Teachers
  • Centre for Women Studies
  • Instructional Media Centre
  • Centre for Urdu Language,Literature & Culture
  • Centre For The Study of Social Exclusion & Inclusive Policy
  • UGC Academic staff college

Manuu has also started polytechnic colleges at Hyderabad, Bangalore and Darbhanga. Manuu's I.T.I's are working at Hyderabad, Bangalore and Darbhanga. It has also established model schools at Hyderabad and Darbhanga.

In addition to the above mentioned institutions the University has four Colleges of Teacher Education working at Hyderabad, Bhopal, Darbhanga and Srinagar. N.T.S. (Mysore) has recently established its field unit at Manuu campus Gachibowli Hyderabad.

In addition, the university is home to the Maulna Azad Library, which was established in 1998.[1] The library subscribes to 27 current periodicals in Urdu, 129 in English, nine in Hindi and 20 popular magazines apart from 13 newspapers in four languages: Urdu, English, Telugu and Hindi.[1]
