The Nokia N8 is a Symbian^3 smartphone from the Nokia Nseries. Featuring Carl Zeiss optics and xenon flash, the N8 is the first Nokia camera phone to utilise a 12 megapixel camera sensor size of 1/1.83″, making it the largest image sensor in a camera phone at the time of its launch. In fact it is larger than the sensor of most pocket cameras (1/2.2"). The large sensor paired with a xenon flash (pocket and professional cameras have this type of flash) make this an exceptional camera, especially for low light pictures. Among its connectivity features are HDMI out, USB On-The-Go and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n support; the N8 also has gesture support and is the first device to feature a Pentaband 3.5G radio.[6] It was Nokia's flagship device for 2010.

The Nokia N8 smartphone was made available at the official Nokia Online Store on 23 September 2010 and was released in select markets on October 1, 2010.[7] The N8 became the product with the most customer pre-orders in Nokia's history up to the point of its release.[8]

History

The previous phone in the Nseries was the N97, which was criticised for its earlier firmware issues. Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia's Executive Vice President for Markets, said in an interview that software quality control would be better than for the N97[9] The N8 was the first device to feature the Symbian^3 operating system. Initially scheduled for the second quarter of 2010, the N8 was pushed back to the third quarter,[10] being finally released on 30 September 2010 due to 'final amendments'.

The previous Nokia phone with a focus on photography is the N86 8MP, which has an 8 Megapixel sensor and has been available since June 2009.[11]

The N8 is the second Nokia to have a capacitive touchscreen, following the X6, and the first with multi-touch.[12]

Nokia N8 has dual charging options.[17] It accepts either use a standard-pin Nokia charger or a flat pin micro-USB charger as well. The device also gets charged when connected to a computer through USB. Nokia recommends that you should only use Nokia specific chargers though the device gets charged with any micro-USB chargers.

Although the procedure is not endorsed by Nokia,[5][18] the battery has proven to be replaceable quite easily by removing two screws.[19]

Software platform and user interface

The N8 is the first Nokia smartphone device to run on the Symbian^3 operating system. Symbian^3 was scheduled for the second quarter of 2010, but was pushed back to the third quarter.[10] The N8 includes a software update application which checks for, downloads, and installs available firmware upgrades and feature updates from Nokia. An Internet connection is required via Wi-Fi or the mobile phone service provider, alternatively, if computer and cable connections are required, Nokia Software Updater application is available for download. The latest N8 firmware version is 014.002, and was released March 1st 2011. Updated software platforms include changes such as enhanced performance and usability improvements.[21]

Symbian^3 supports three home screens, each with up to six widgets that the user can customise. This new operating system has provided streamlined menus and support for HD recording. As with older versions of Symbian, native multitasking is supported.[22] Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia's Executive Vice President for Markets, stated in an interview that the quality control for Nokia N8 will supersede that of Nokia N97.[9] There has been a much greater emphasis on the user interface and user experience with Symbian^3 for the N8, such as consistency between menus, which is a commonly criticised factor of Symbian^1 devices.

Contrary to rumours,[23] future Nseries devices have a strong possibility to be coupled with Symbian platform, as updates for future Symbian releases will soon be available as Symbian Anna for Symbian^3 users.[24] Other software that will work on this mobile phone will be:

Promotion

To highlight the capabilities of the Nokia N8 camera, Nokia created a short film, The Commuter, in October 2010. Directed by the McHenry brothers and starring Dev Patel, Ed Westwick, Charles Dance and Pamela Anderson, the seven-minute film was shot entirely on the phone's 720p camera. For the Spanish promotion of the phone they also created a short video featuring luminescent puppets, called Love Knot.

The phone was also used to film Drums of Death's "Won't Be Long" music video.

Using CellScope technology, Nokia also released another film called "Dot" which they marketed to as the world's smallest stop-motion animation character.

The device also appeared on the popular Showtime TV show, "Dexter"[30] as well as the film, "TRON: Legacy".[31]

In Asian countries, it was promoted differently through the fictional character Pier Roxas on Nokia's Project Gener8 by Young & Rubicam Philippines. He also appeared on the GMA talk show Startalk to promote the device.[32]

Technical issues

On 17 November 2010, several mobile technology websites published articles amid emerging claims from people worldwide who have noticed their Nokia N8 smartphone turning itself off and ultimately failing to turn back on.[33]

On 18 November 2010, Nokia confirmed that a small number of its N8 smartphones are experiencing power problems.[34]

Niklas Savander, Nokia's executive vice president, said in a video interview posted on the company's blog through Nokia's customer care; "We have heard that a limited number of Nokia N8 customers are experiencing problems powering the device on". "We have traced it down to the way we assemble the engines", Savander continued. "We have, as a precautionary measure, taken immediate action across the product line".[34]

Savander advised customers to either send their faulty device to Nokia Care in their country, an authorised Nokia Care Centre or their vendor for a replacement device. "The power problems are covered by Nokia's standard warranty, so those experiencing issues can get the problem fixed by contacting customer care", he added. Savander said the problem is not widespread. "If you look at the total number of N8's we have shipped, it is a small number", he said. "However, for the one individual where it's not working, it is, of course, a significant issue. Most consumers are loving their N8's, but we need to make sure that these limited instances get fixed as well".[34]

Some of the N8's have a proximity sensor bug during calls.[35]

On 10 December 2010, the Nokia Messaging Team posted to their online forum that they had become aware of problems using their push email service with the N8 smartphone.[36] Nokia recommended declining their own terms of service during email set-up,[37] which triggers the phone to use the email service providers mail servers directly rather than using the Nokia Messaging proxy servers. The email service must also provide push email for the push email options to be available for that email account.
