The following is a list of video games with gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender characters, including any other minorities falling under the LGBT umbrella term.

History

During the 1980s, characters that can be argued as identifying as LGBT were rarely shown in a realistic or non-stereotypical context and were often object of ridicule or jokes.[1]

1990s continued using stereotyped characters which do not reflect the diversity that can be found within LGBT communities, with many coming from Japanese games. However, more efforts were found to make more diverse and less one-dimensional characters.[2]

From 2000 to 2009, several Buffy the Vampire Slayer games were made. A prominent character in the series, Willow Rosenberg, is lesbian or bisexual. In the 2003 game, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds, both Willow Rosenberg and her girlfriend, Tara Maclay, are playable characters.

Action-adventure, stealth Ubisoft Montreal Canada
2010 Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Leonardo Da Vinci and Salaì Gay The protagonist's lifelong friend Leonardo Da Vinci is implied to be homosexual, based on similar historical evidence. On one occasion, he assures Ezio Auditore da Firenze that "Women provide little distraction" from constructing upgrades for him and pats him on the back, to which Ezio replies "Wait, I don't get it.". In the downloadable content The Da Vinci Disappearance, Ezio appears to know of Leonardo's historically romantic relationship with his pupil Salaì, stating that "You do not need to lie to me. Salaì fits you. I approve.".
2014 Assassin's Creed Rogue Harlan Cunningham and Arend Schut Gay The game has voice files about two Assassins: Harlan Cunningham, an ex wrestler, and his disciple Arend Schut, a mixed martial arts champion. Ubisoft Sofia Bulgaria
2015 Assassin's Creed Syndicate Jacob Frye Bisexual The lead writer of this game indicated that the team explicitly avoided giving Jacob Frye, one of the game's two protagonists, a female love interest during the main storyline. He also hinted at the idea that Jacob needed to "figure himself out to some degree" after his brief partnership with Maxwell Roth.[3] This led to speculation regarding Jacob's sexuality, with the official Assassin's Creed Tumblr later confirming that the character is canonically bisexual.[4][5] Ubisoft Quebec Canada
Ned Wynert Trans man Ned Wynert is a minor character and a trans man.
Arend Schut Cunningham and Harlan Cunningham Gay In modern storyline, Arend Schut Cunningham from Assassin's Creed Rogue sends an e-mail that mentions his honeymoon with his husband, Harlan Cunningham.[citation needed][clarification needed]

It was confirmed by lead writer Anthony Burch on his ask.fm that she is lesbian and also that during production of the DLC Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage (2012), it was planned to depict Tiny Tina having a crush on Moxxi, but the dialogue concerning this was ultimately deleted before the DLC was released.[7]
Axton Bisexual In the DLC Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep (2013), it is revealed that Axton, one of the playable characters, is bisexual. While his flirtatious lines with male characters were originally a coding error, Gearbox Studios decided to confirm his bisexuality with overt references in the DLC.[8]

Their relationship is confirmed later in a conversation where Janey implies that she "hit that" (referring to Athena) by giving a high five to Tiny Tina, even though Janey is initially defensive to talk about it. In the DLC Claptastic Voyage (2015), it is shown that Athena and Janey moved together to Hollow Point, a subterranean city on Pandora.

In the episodic adventure game Tales from the Borderlands (2014), Athena and Janey are in a relationship. Depending on the player's choices, a scene may be available where Janey kisses Athena on the cheek and refers to her as her girlfriend. Later in the game, there is an unmissable scene where Athena is interrupted by a call from Janey, once again referring to her as her girlfriend.

Male and female prostitutes Bisexual The player can sleep with male or female prostitutes regardless of Hawke's gender. The prostitute Serendipity, though intended by writer Mary Kirby to be a male crossdresser and not a transgender woman, was read by many players as the latter. BioWare received criticism for Serendipity's portrayal, which inspired more thoughtful creation of two new transgender characters in subsequent installments.

Empress Celene of Orlais and Briala Lesbian Empress Celene of Orlais, whose potential assassination is a critical plot point in the game, was formerly in a relationship with her spymaster, the female elf Briala. While the two are separated (and at war) as of the events of the game, the Inquisitor can facilitate their reconciliation. Their relationship was originally documented in the tie-in novel Dragon Age: The Masked Empire.
Leliana Bisexual The game sees the return of the established bisexual character Leliana, although she is not a romance option.
Cyril de Montfort / Duke de Montfort Bisexual The bisexual character Cyril de Montfort also cameos as the new Duke de Montfort in the Trespasser DLC.
Other NPCs Lesbian, Gay Other NPCs encountered throughout the world are shown to be in same-gender relationships, such as Inquisition scout Ritts and the apostate mage Eldredda in the Hinterlands, Commander Jehan and Chevalier Fabienne in the Exalted Plains, and two unnamed Orlesian noblemen at the Winter Palace (one of whom accuses the other of flirting with Duke Cyril).

Fable 2004 Fable Player character and NPC townspeople Bisexual In the Fable games, the player character can flirt, marry and/or have sex with NPC townspeople of the same sex.

In Fable (2004), if the player marries a female character in addition to a male NPC, the personality status screen labels them as bisexual. While the NPCs in the game do not treat the player with any disgust if they choose to be gay, they do not get paid "dowry" for marrying any male characters but almost all female ones give such. One quest involves finding the deeds to a bordello so the player can free the prostitutes from the male owner. Like the other quests in the game there are several ways of solving this, but one option is to dress as a woman and have sex with the owner when he's drunk.

In Fable II (2008), there are more lesbian, gay, and bisexual NPC townspeople to court and marry. A context-specific line is used in a conversation within the middle of the game, wherein Hammer asks if the protagonist was able to convince his or her partner, wife, or husband to wait for them when they must go away for ten years. The game also includes a quest in which the player character finds a suitable partner for a farmer's son who hints at being gay. The farmer is surprised but accepts that his son is gay and was unable to find an acceptable partner because the father had previously presented him only with female suitors. Reaver, the NPC known as the Hero of Skill, is bisexual, known to have simultaneous lovers named Ursula, Penelope, and Andrew.

In Fable III (2010), once again there are more lesbian, gay, and bisexual NPC townspeople to court and marry. Reaver returns, this time inviting the hero (of either sex) to have a 'private party' in his bedchamber (though the player cannot accept this invitation).

Flak and Shrapnel Gay In Rivet City, the player meets Flak and Shrapnel, a pair of weapons dealers whom the game identifies as "partners." The two run a shop together and share a single bed. It's only implied that the nature of their relationship is romantic. An NPC from another city refers to Flak as an "old queen."
2010 Fallout: New Vegas Courier Gay (optional) The main character, the unnamed Courier, can be chosen as male, with the perk (character trait) Confirmed Bachelor, giving him several advantages with other homosexual male NPCs (and, following the stereotype of the homosexual as more understanding and perceptive about emotions, grant him the ability to better understand the plight of the otherwise mute companion Christine). This perk has a female equivalent, the Cherchez la femme perk. Obsidian Entertainment
Veronica Santangelo Lesbian Veronica Santangelo is a young Scribe from the Brotherhood of Steel, who confesses to the main character to have nursed a crush for another girl in the Brotherhood (hinted to be Christine Royce, another joinable NPC, mute and enslaved, who references having been in a relationship with a girl in her Brotherhood days) which ended badly because of the disapproval of her girlfriend's parents.

In the French version the antagonist Adel is described as being intersex, with other characters using both pronouns to refer to them. Role-playing Square Japan
Intersex (French version)
2000 Final Fantasy IX Quina Quen Non-binary Quina Quen is a playable character who belongs to a genderless race called the Qu. Referred to by the pronoun "s/he" throughout, the Qu's bizarre appearance offers little clue as to any intended orientation.[18] At one stage in the game, it is possible for Quina and Vivi, an apparently juvenile Black Mage, to be married. While this scene is optional and treated very much as a light-hearted comic scene with no implication of sexual attraction, it nevertheless treats the topic of pansexuality and same-sex marriage sympathetically.
Vivi Pansexual
Final Fight and Street Fighter 1989 Final Fight Poison Trans woman Poison is introduced in Final Fight (1989), where she is either a pre-op or post-op trans woman, depending on the region where the game was released.[19][20][21][22]

2015 Fire Emblem Fates Niles and Rhajat Bisexual This game is the first in the Fire Emblem franchise to feature a same-sex marriage option for both the 'Birthright' and 'Conquest' versions of the game (Niles and Rhajat in the American version).[23] The same sex options, however, are restricted to one character per game, where the Conquest edition contains a man who may be romanced by male or female main characters, while the Birthright edition has a woman who may be romanced by male and female protagonists. In the DLC, Revelations, both Rhajat and Niles are available to be romanced by the female and male main characters. However, they can still marry characters of the other gender so it is implied they are bisexual. If the player marries a character of the same sex, they will not be able to unlock Kana (the player's child) or Nina, Niles' daughter.[24]
