Although the first official mail flight took off from Allahabad, that particular flight originated in a polo field.[1] Construction of dedicated airfields were taken up much later, in 1926.[2] The airfield at Bamrauli was one of the five compulsory stops of the MacRobertson Trophy Air Race which took place in October 1934.[3]

Extension and upgradation plan

To meet the demand of increasing air travel in Allahabad, Allahabad Airport is being upgraded and a new civil terminal is being built by Airports Authority of India, adjacent to the existing Central Air Command Air force base, Allahabad.[8] The work is nearing completion and the Allahabad Airport - New Terminal will be operational on 15th November 2018 along with the commencement of Allahabad-Bengaluru IndiGo flight. [9]

When completed, it will be India's First Airport to be completed in such short span of time (10 Months).[10]

The site measures approximately 82.66 acres located south of the present airfield civil enclave. The new civil enclave includes a new terminal building (9000 square metres) with peak hour capacity of 700 passengers, an apron to park civil schedule flights, link taxi track and car parks with capacity of 200 cars/taxis.[11] The cost of construction of the new civil terminal airport is Rs. 2.89 Billion (Rs. 289 Crores).[12] [13]
