Buster Seven Talk

I noticed you created initially this article and are a major contributator. Do you know the papertrail of this fragment and how Yale happened to obtain it?

Just happening by re P.Oxy. 85, but I can field this, Doug. The acquisition record is: "Purchased by Michael Ivanovich Rostovtzeff from Maurice Nahman in Paris, June 1933, with funds donated by Edward Stephen Harkness and Horatio McLeod Reynolds." The Cardiff Chestnut (talk) 21:08, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Paris 1933. Let me know if any papertrail before this. --Doug Coldwell talk 21:13, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
None, generally if you get to Nahman, that's the last stop. The Cardiff Chestnut (talk) 21:16, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Didn't Nahman purchase it from somebody?--Doug Coldwell talk 22:12, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

(bringing the Nahman conversation back here where it belongs instead of my talk page)--Doug Coldwell talk 12:20, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
So as not to keep bothering Leszek. Nahman and Idris Bell were some of a group of people that bought papyri that had made it into the private market so that pieces that had been stolen from excavations wouldn't go unstudied. (That's the generous way of looking at the people whom they bought from--that they were persuaded by a bit of money to further knowledge.) The only way you find out where Nahmann got this piece is to try to track down his estate and hope there are records. I doubt there are, but who know? (22:23, 5 November 2011‎ Cardiffchestnut)

So it appears that the paper trail goes back no further than the nineteenth century - at best?--Doug Coldwell talk 22:37, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Leszek didn't seemed to be bothered with the new Otium article I created. In fact he was very generious in his DYK help and I sent StuRat a barnstar for his work on the article. I love working with Leszek, User: StuRat, User: Wetman, User: Dr. Blofeld and other Wikipedia experts like these that I have worked with for many years. They don't seem to be bothered when I ask for their help and are very generous with their contributions for articles I created or information I need.--Doug Coldwell talk 22:37, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I meant bothering him with a conversation between the two of us on his talk page. Very few papyri have a paper trail going beyond the late 19th century because that's when they came out of the ground. But, then, one could say that a piece came out of the ground in any case and really be advancing a conspiracy of alphabetic proportions. I am, of course, kidding. The Cardiff Chestnut (talk) 22:51, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Let's let Leszek Jańczuk reply to his own questions. He is quite capable of answering and needs no help.--Doug Coldwell talk 12:20, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.Oxy. 85

[edit]

I think that this is going to be a keep. Maybe we should think about getting a few more interested editors together and discussing how to proceed with the series. The Cardiff Chestnut (talk) 21:10, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As I said before, I'd be happy to help out. My knowledge of Greek has faded away, but I don't mind doing a lot of minor cleanup and checking. Also, I've been thinking about a navigation template as well, although it's a subtle problem because of the number of documents.— alf.laylah.wa.laylah (talk) 21:29, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am going to try to turn this article into a Good Article. Any suggestions or help?----Doug Coldwell talk 12:07, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've made it more concise. Does it need more "fine tuning"? Good Article possibility?--Doug Coldwell talk 16:31, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How do I go about getting Otium reassessed to possible B-Class and getting an assessment of "importance" on the WikiProjects?--Doug Coldwell talk 22:28, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, thanks!--Doug Coldwell talk 23:33, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Can you mark in the DYK submission template that I prefer ALT1. Can you strike through the original hook? Thanks.--Doug Coldwell talk 18:55, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I would prefer that ALT1 be the first preference to choose as a hook line. Can I do that?--Doug Coldwell talk 19:51, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your input would be appreciated at Talk:Otium#DYK submission template. --Doug Coldwell talk 23:22, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P. Oxy. category

[edit]

Do you have any ideas on a better way to organize the category? Right now it's dumping them all into P, and sorting them by first digit. I'm thinking maybe groups of 50 or 100, either with subcategories or by piping them into the right sections?— alf.laylah.wa.laylah (talk) 18:59, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I'm planning to rearrange the navigation template to be organized by volume as well. My feeling is that 159-207, the ones Grenfell and Hunt skim over in V.1, should be described briefly in a single article, maybe a list? Or is there newer work on these ones that could support individual articles?— alf.laylah.wa.laylah (talk) 18:25, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P. Oxy. numbering in category

[edit]

I think it might be better if we pipe them to their actual document numbers, and only append 0's when we're in a volume that has both three digit numbers and 4 digit numbers. This way we don't have to calculate where an individual papyrus ought to be numbered in its subcategory, because we're just using the grenfell/hunt numbering. Is there something I didn't think of?— alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 19:40, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New templates

[edit]

Bonjour,

You may now use two templates : {{Nomen sacrum}} and {{Papyrus siglum}}, e. g.

  • {{Nomen sacrum|ΙΗΣ}} : ΙΗΣ ;
  • {{Papyrus siglum|13}} : 13 (without link) ;
  • {{Papyrus siglum|13|}} : 13 (with link).

Better than esoteric expressions !

Maybe you can take a look at this and see if you think I'm on the right track for the rest of volume I? Is there more information about each that ought to be included? Do you have suggestions on how to cite the information more efficiently? I'll write an introductory paragraph, of course, or you're welcome to if you'd like. Other comments? When I'm done with it I'm thinking I'll make redirects to fill in all the redlinks in the template and as placeholders for future articles. Does that seem good to you? Also, what the heck is SB? It should be easy to figure out, but it seems to be assumed everywhere.— alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 02:54, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sergio Franchi biography project

[edit]

Hi Leszek Janczuk: I am a new editor and am on my third of three Sergio Franchi articles I am creating. On his biography, I see you have made some contributions which are very subtle and obviously valuable. I think you also removed the notice I had posted on the "Stardom in America" section that this was an "article under construction." The section is very obviously uncomplete for I have just completed his American debut. If you do not have any objection I would like to repost the "Under Construction notice." The article is still listed as Stub Class, and I am not yet ready to ask for a formal review. The Stardom in America section is only about 15% complete, and then I want to add photos and an American Musicians Template. I am sure I have caused some confusion working on an active article, but being new, I was not sure how to work on a stub article in two places-- the stub and a sandbox. Please take some of your valuable time to explain this to me. Should I just go ahead with my additions (paragraph by paragraph) and leave the "Under construction" notice off? Thanks for your attention to this matter. Please reply the Sergio Franchi article talk page. Thanks, CatherineCathlec (talk) 15:06, 6 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again: Thanks for a short helpful answer! Also having trouble finding out how to incorporate an American Musicans Template into my article. The Wiki Help box doesn't lead me to an answer. CatherineCathlec (talk) 17:37, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Online Ambassador, Spring 2012

[edit]

Hi, Leszek Janczuk! As you may know, the Wikipedia Education Program has instilled a new set of standards that courses must meet to officially join the program for the semester. As you can see, one of the requirements is that at least one ambassador or professor is a Wikipedian, as this should give students more access to helpful information about contributing to Wikipedia and creating good content. You are listed on the Online Ambassador page; are you still interested in remaining active this semester? Some of these classes will have to remove themselves from the program should they fail to meet these standards, but we would like to ensure that new students are receiving proper support during the editing process. Please let me know if you are still interested in mentoring these students this semester and/or visit the Online Ambassador talk page to select a course that still needs an Online Ambassador. Thank you!216.38.130.164 (talk) 19:36, 6 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Papyrus 12

[edit]

First, may I thank you for all the splendid work you do here on Wikipedia, in particular relating to biblical manuscripts. I recently uploaded a picture of what I think is Papyrus 12 (File:Papyrus_12.png. According to your edit summary, the picture is of some other manuscript. I got it from 'The Amherst Papyri, vol. II' by Grenfell & Hunt ([1]). The manuscript contains a letter, but the text of Hebrew 1:1 occurs on the same papyrus. If you look at the top of the second column, you can find the same letters from Hebrews that are quoted in the article. (see also Grenfell & Hunt vol. I, p. 30) Can you please check the picture to see if I'm mistaken? Thanks in advance. -- Lindert (talk) 16:31, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Followup: You stated the picture was in fact P. Amherst 2, but that is not correct. In Grenfell & Hunt vol. I no. 2 is printed in Plate II, and that is a different manuscript. The picture is in fact Plate XXV from Grenfell & Hunt vol. II. The index states that this is no. 3a, but 3b is on the same papyrus. Have you looked at the Greek text at the top center of the image? That is exactly what Papyrus 12 (P. Amherst 3b) contains, including the nomina sacra. -- Lindert (talk) 17:39, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, I don't mean to be obnoxious, and you are certainly much more knowledgeable about the subject, but I simply cannot see in File:Papyrus_12.png this text you link to. Are you sure we're talking about the same picture? here you can see that the picture is actually P. Amherst III, not II. On the contrary, I clearly see the first words of the Letter to the Hebrews on top of the second column, exactly where I would expect it for Papyrus 12. In fact, I am positive that the text is this letter instead. I would gladly accept correction, but what I see in the picture is that it is in fact Papyrus 12 containing Hebrews 1:1. -- Lindert (talk) 19:54, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.

After reviewing the good article nomination of Lectionary 179 which I closed as a fail back in November 2011. I feel that it was closed too quickly and that it was slightly unfair on your part. I was wondering if you would like me to re open the review and work with you to help it become a good article and this time I promise to give you adequate time to correct any issues raised. Hi, you are doing some great work on this article and there are only a few minor issues left. May I suggest that you request a copyedit at WP:GOCE as there are places where the grammar could be improved, I have tried my best but I think a more experienced copy editor would do a better job. I have also added some clarification tags within the article, for a few sentences which need to be clarified so no one gets confused when reading the article. If you need any help or any specific explanation as to why I have placed a tag there, just ask. Puffin Let's talk! 10:32, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Help needed with ru:wikipedia

[edit]

Hi. There is a discussion in commons about deleting the works of creator Victor Bulla (Булла, Виктор Карлович). The bottom of the ru:wp article on him states that rehabilitated in 1958. If this is the case the copyrights on his works expire 70 years after 1958 and not 70 years after his death in 1938. I wonder if his family did the legal process, or the editor confused amnesty with rehabilitation. I don't read or speak Russian so I can't verify it. If you could add a {citation needed} tag to the statement, that may help. You could also just let me know what the template is in ru:wp and I may be able to add it as well. Invisible ReligionInvisible religion a term brought to us by Thomas Luckmann in 1967, the description of the term has a connection with secularization which is defined as a decline in tradition religion. In this theory, religion becomes a term for any human action or thought that is above the animal level (Christiano, 71), for example something as simple as cooking your food in the kitchen demonstrates us as engaging in religious behavior. Invisible religion makes way for individualistic and privatized forms of religion where unlike traditional Christianity people are able to display self-expression, self-actualization, and individual practices while the concept of religion is present. Religion can be considered invisible because, no human being has the ability to look into the heart of another human being and see if they truly have a relationship with Christ. Visible typically means to see with your eyes, therefore religion can practiced as invisible because no human in recent history has seen Christ with their eyes.

Civil ReligionCivil Religion according to Bellah is that most people in the United States share common religious characteristics expressed through beliefs, symbols, and rituals that provide a religious dimension for the entire American community (Christiano, 65), promoting national unity. For example holidays like the Fourth of July are religious but also have an aspect of American pride. How so? During the Fourth of July festivities the people in America are celebrating the Declaration of Independence, remembering America as a nation under God. Civil religion is often widely displayed during presidential elections, when candidates are running for presidency in America they often use civil religion to appeal to voters using nationalism and religion to establish creditability and gain the trust of voters.

PluralismPluralism is a term that expresses the idea that the various religious groups are in competition with each other (Christiano, 78).Religious pluralism is tolerable, because it doesn’t change what it means to be a follower of Christ. This competition does then create a religious marketplace in which the various denominations are using marketing skills to draw in members. Just as caffeine is addicting people tend to get addicted to the religious goods and services offered by a church, therefore often times churches will provide a variety of goods for example, tee shirts, pens, coffee cups and other purchasable items for their members and services marriage counseling programs, food drives, debt relief services that make the members of the church want to remain a member.

Online Ambassador

[edit]

Hi Leszek! Are you interested in being the Online Ambassador for any classes this term? We've got a few classes that are looking for ambassador right now (Canada, US), so if you're up for helping any, please do! Let me know if you have any questions, or if you'd like me to pick a course for you. Two in particular might be interesting for you: Women in Relgious Traditions: Islam and Death & Afterlife: Islam.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 16:22, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Right. Those two classes have not become active, but you can still sign up now to support them as an Online Ambassador if you want to. Then, when they do get started, they'll have someone they can turn to for help.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 18:43, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The elusive St. Mary Deipara.

[edit]

Hi, Leszek!

I notice that you added a note about the manuscripts from the St. Mary Deipara to the article Wadi El Natrun a few years ago, and that you seem to be some kind of expert on Syriac documents...

I wonder if you could confirm (or, much less likely, reject) my opinion that this monastery is the same as the one described in our article Syrian Monastery, Egypt? You wouldn't also happen to know how that monastery commonly is namde nowadays in English (and e.g. in Polish)? I asked about this a few months ago on Talk:Syrian Monastery, Egypt, but got no responses, which frustrated my attempts to make a more consistent article naming and links.

Manuscript Additions to Comma Johanneum

[edit]

Greetings, Leszek. The Comma Johanneum article could use two more Greek mss added. One is 177, which Daniel Wallace discovered or announced has the entry in the margin. The other is ms 2473, XVII Century - Athens, National Library. 2473 seems to be agreed upon in textual circles. I can make the changes, but since you have handled most of the manuscript area, and know the graphs and all, I would prefer you take the first shot.

Thanks.

Wikipedia Ambassadors update

[edit]

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

  1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
  2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
  3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

Lessing, Eichhorn, James R. Edwards

[edit]

Cześć. You are exponentially the most competent/productive editor in the NT documents articles. I wonder if you would be so kind as to take a stroll past Hebrew Gospel hypothesis (which should really be named Proto-Gospel hypothesis) and (1) do a broad article review. (2) which is a really presumptive and tentative request, if you consider that any of these hypotheses justify a chart of the quality of File:Streeter's the Four Document Hypothesis.PNG, would you consider making one? I am not sure that any do. The James R. Edwards book review includes a chart, but I am not sure if any of these hypotheses have a place in mainstream synoptic scholarship to justify the use of time. Apart from that, many many thanks for zillions of helpful NPOV edits. Z najlepszymi życzeniami! In ictu oculi (talk) 02:56, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Kilka krótkich pytań ;)

[edit]

Witam serdecznie!

Mam na imię Kamil. Jestem studentem 3 roku komunikowania publicznego PWSZ w Legnicy, obecnie w trakcie pisania pracy licencjackiej ;)

Hello!

You are receiving this message because The Wikipedia Library has record of you receiving a one-year subscription to Questia. This is a brief update to remind you about that access:

  • Make sure that you can still log in to your Questia account; if you are having trouble feel free to get in touch.

  • Remember, if you find this source useful for your Wikipedia work, make sure to include citations with links on Wikipedia: links to partner resources are one of the few ways we can demonstrate usage and demand for accounts to our partners. The greater the linkage, the greater the likelihood a useful partnership will be renewed.
  • Write unusual articles using this partner's sources? Did access to this source create new opportunities for you in the Wikipedia community? If you have a unique story to share about your contributions, email us and we can set up an opportunity for you to write a blog post about your work with one of our partner's resources.

Finally, we would greatly appreciate if you filled out this short survey. The survey helps us not only better serve you with facilitating this particular partnership, but also helps us discover what other partnerships and services The Wikipedia Library can offer.

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
