The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) is one of India's premier management institutes. It was established in the year 1973. It is widely considered to be one of the toughest to get in MBA programs in the world. IIM B is the only B School in India to be ranked among Top 10 Asia-Pacific B-Schools according to the QS Global Business School Survey 2009. Also Eduniversal, Paris [1] has ranked IIMB as the #1 Business School in Central Asia, Middle East & South Asia and among the top 27 schools worldwide.

The IIMs are very selective in admissions. The year 2008 saw around 267,000 candidates appearing for the Common Admission Test, the entrance exam for the IIMs.[2] The IIMs were created by the government of India to augment management talent and resources in the country. The institute is located in India’s Information Technology capital, Bengaluru.

Board of Governors

Mr. Mukesh D Ambani, the Chairman & Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, is the current Chairman of The Board of Governors of the institute. The Board consists of the Director and few professors of the institute and many successful people from academia and the industry. The new director is Prof. Pankaj Chandra. IIMB was founded and directed by Padmabhushan Prof. N. S. Ramaswamy.[3][4]

In addition to the long-duration programmes, IIMB offers a wide range of executive education programmes to meet the continuing education needs of business executives. Apart from teaching, the faculty of the institute also does consulting for various public and private organisations in India.

The International Masters Program in Practicing Management (IMPM) is an international collaborative executive education program jointly offered by IIMB with Stanford University, London School of Business,GSB Chicago, INSEAD, McGill University, Lancaster University, ESADE Business School and a consortium of Japanese universities. It is globally recognised as an innovative programme in the field of executive education

IIM Bangalore has also been supporting several enterprising startups during their early phase of development via N S Raghavan Center for Entrepreneurial learning. Potential startups can submit their business plans, submitted plans are reviewed by a renowned committee of successful entrepreneurs and professors. Selected startups are given place & incubation help to grow their venture during early phases.

Student Clubs

  • Academic Council, is a student body in all matters pertaining to academics.
  • Bookrack, is IIMB's own student run library with collection of over 1000 fiction and non-fiction titles.
  • MaSh, is the marketing club which inculcates and promotes the spirit of marketing among students.
  • Networth, is the finance club.
  • ICON, is a consulting club which provides opportunities to student to work on real life consulting assignments for corporate clients.
  • FII, Forum for Industrial Interaction bridges the gap between the business world and the business school. The flagship event called Vista organized by FII each year is one of the biggest events of the academic year.
  • Cul-Com, Cultural Committee is one of the most popular club on campus. Unmaad, the famous cultural festival of IIM Bangalore is the flagship event of CulCom.
  • MARS, is the student run Merchandising and Retailing society where everything from purchasing to publicity to managing cash and every minute detail of running the shop is handled by students.
  • SIGMA maintains the IT infrastructure in campus by providing systems support for various institute activities.
  • EnI is the Entrepreneurship and Innovation cell to encourage and facilitate the entrepreneurial spirit among the IIMB community.
  • Toastmasters at IIMB is the local chapter of Toastmasters International that aims to prepare dynamic manager with superior oratory skills.
  • Vikasna is the student run social service initiative.
  • Dress Circle focuses on visual art forms of photography, videography and drawing & painting.

Events

  • Anusmaran, is the annual global Alumni meet for IIM Bangalore alumni. First organized in 2002, it usually takes place on the same day across all event locations and for all alumni chapters.
  • Unmaad, one of India's biggest inter-college events, is held annually at the IIM Bangalore campus. Spanning three days of non-stop events, Unmaad draws thousands of participants from India's premier institutions and features a host of events like dramatics, music performances, dances, quizzes, debates, street plays, professional concerts and the grand Unmaad fashion show.
  • Vista, the management festival at IIM Bangalore, is again one of India's largest business-school meets. Students from all over India and outside gather at IIM Bangalore for a variety of events such as paper presentations, mock boardroom events, marketing and strategy games and so on.
  • Convergenz, the corporate management festival at IIM Bangalore, is an Industry-Institute management fest. Held sometimes after Convergenz, it is primarily targeted towards Industry participants and allows the Industry to interact with students in a major way.
  • L-Cube, the summer management festival at IIM Bangalore, is again one of India's largest business school - corporate meets. Students from all over India and Corporate participants gather at IIM Bangalore for a variety of events such as paper presentations, mock boardroom events, marketing and strategy games and so on.
  • Eximius[5], is the entrepreneurship summit at IIM Bangalore. The event acts as a platform for interaction between students, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, technical evangelists and the like. Conducted every year in month of August, EXIMIUS is all about bringing ideas closer to opportunities. The event includes challenging business idea contests, platforms for idea validation and networking, scintillating seminars on enterprise and innovation and thought provoking panel discussions. The event is open to both students and the corporate sector.
  • YAMINI, the annual classical music festival, organized by the IIMB-SPICMACAY chapter. The dusk to dawn classical music and dance festival, starts in the evening of 25th January every year showcasing leading artists from all over the country, and culminates with the national anthem at the sunrise on the Republic Day. It typically attracts large audiences to the tune of 4000.

Campus

Often termed as the place to "B",the accommodation consists of 12 hostel blocks, one executive block, one MHU block for PGPPM participants and the executive accommodation at the Management Development Center. All the students are provided with accommodation on campus in well-appointed single room in the institute hostels. 24 hours Internet connectivity, fully automatic washing machines, music room and recreation room are standard features. The campus is also Wi-Fi enabled. Laundry and Ironing services are also provided. The hostels also have intercom facility, which is linked to the institute intercom. There are 3 STD/ISD, PCOs in the hostel premises for the convenience of the student apart from coin operated public telephones. There is also a student run library called 'Book Rack', a music club and students Shoppe called 'MARS' in the hostel premises.

The campus was also the site for the shooting of the bollywood film Three Idiots directed by Rajkumar Hirani and starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. The film is loosely based on a famous novel, Five Point Someone by Indian writer IIT Delhi alumnus Chetan Bhagat [6]

Life at the IIM Bangalore campus has also been detailed in the book Joker in the Pack by IIM Bangalore alumnus Neeraj Pahlajani . Other books based on IIM B include "Everything you desire" by Harshdeep Jolly and "Keep off the grass" by Karan Bajaj.[7].

Placements

IIM Bangalore has seen excellent placements for the past many years. Leading investment banks such as HSBC, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch , Deutsche Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland; top tier consulting firms such as McKinsey , BCG , Bain , Booz and Company Deloitte Consulting, Alvarez & Marsal, and A.T. Kearney, Private Equity firms like Blackstone, Greater Pacific Capital and marketing firms like Hindustan Lever Limited, P&G are among the top recruiters.[8]
