Identifying the Gaps: Africa
Hi Emijrp
I have recently come across your epic project – the sum of all human knowledge on Wikipedia. I work on WikiAfrica which is an independent project that supports the Wikimedia movement in the creation and expansion of subject matter relating to Africa on Wikipedia. We do a number of projects.
Recently it has been troubling us that we cannot easily identify the gaps in content; or indeed know where to concentrate. Your project has been incredibly enlightening, but it is still difficult to see what is missing from each country. We were thinking of constructing a way of analysing the subject matter that should be covered about each country in the world (i.e. the information needed for anyone to have a complete understanding of any one country). If we created a metric of what should be covered, we could then see what has been covered, see the article rating and then we could see how much of each country is covered in each language version, and then that would give us a yard stick as to how much work needs to be done and where. Simple right – I am sure not!
So, rather than re-invent the wheel, I wondered if you know if there has been any content analysis to find out gaps in content coverage on Wikipedia? So, for example, is there a tool, rubric or a project that you know of where they have analysed what logically 'should' be covered about a country/topic and then analysed how well a specific country/topic is covered in Wikipedia. Does it ring any bells? If it hasn't I am very keen to start a project like that, but I don't want to develop something that already exists, but would rather work with taking it to the next level. Once we have identified the gaps in coverage, we can leverage the right people to work on those areas that need work. - Hello Isla. I'm happy that you contacted me. I'm very interested in the coverage issue, and Africa is a notable case. The all human knowledge page is a big picture but as you can see don't offer much detail. Based in my experience as a red links searcher, some ways for discovering gaps may be:
- Lists of red links using other encyclopedias/sites indexes:
- Outlines: the basics for every country
- Outline of Africa and Index of Africa-related articles
- Outline of Mozambique, and my version adding all the "List of..." I found in other country outlines User:Emijrp/Outlines/Mozambique
- Outlines: the basics for every country
- Navigation boxes: you create a list for a country and assume that would have sense for other countries too and create the navbox
- WikiProjects:
- Category:WikiProject Africa projects
- Red links from their articles: User:Emijrp/Red links/Angola (outdated)
- WikiProjects:
- Stubs categories:
- As you can see there isn't an unique way. I think that the outlines are the basics and later lists by topic and country.
- Personally, I started years ago creating stubs for every national library/archive/museum for any African country I can find info, and lists like List of museums in Botswana. That institutions hold the "human knowledge" of Africa, so I consider that having a stub is an invitation for them to complete their articles, link to digitised collections and who knows, perhaps in the future a partnership for uploading pictures or creating articles.
- The only tool that I know to assess articles is the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team (Benin table in the right) but it says nothing about coverage. Anyway it can be used to compare African countries, doing a ranking to see which one have more articles and which less, and try to motivate the less covered countries to reach the other ones.
- Not related with articles but with images are WLM-maps (zoom in Algeria) and Commons coverage (zoom in Cape Town) tools I developed recently. One for monuments, other a more exhaustive approach asking 1 photo/km2.

- There's one more tool that might help: Mapping Wikipedia. It maps the geotagged articles in a few large Wikipedias and displays them as dots, colored according to different criteria. Just an FYI, you may want to have the bot's talk page either redirect to yours, or convert the redirect to a soft redirect (which I have done; feel free to revert) in the event that another editor performs an edit that automatically gets posted on the redirect's target (such as what happened with my Twinkle-related edit. (If I had realized that my Twinkle notification posted on the bot's user page and not its talk page, I would have reverted it myself; just trying to save you some headaches.) Hello @Anthere:, I am glad that you like the list :-) It is generated using {{Wikidata list}}. Any page with that template is updated by a bot daily. For retrieving the data from Wikidata, you need to add a query in sparql or wdq. It is a bit techy but I can help you (I am still learning too). emijrp (talk) 14:58, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

I'll tell you just what I told Finnusertop: Marking Let's Trim's designation as "Education" instead of "Comedy" as "Intended Genre" is not culturally insensitive. Let's Trim is television. Who cares what country it's from? If What Not To Wear wound up on PBS and someone inferred its genre were Education, shouldn't we say its genre is also intended? Let me be clear about this: I am not treating television differently based on its nationality. List of movie theaters
Hi, I see you're involved in discussion at Talk:List of destroyed heritage, where I edited also at least once, and in general I am in support of that list. But I contact you to ask about List of movie theaters, which is a bot-created / bot-maintained list. That is woefully incomplete, with just 29 U.S. theatres listed when I bet I have created articles on almost that many myself, without even trying. There are 250 to 300 or so historic theatres listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, the majority of which will have articles by now. For example Warner Theatre (Torrington, Connecticut), which is a movie theatre in my point of view, although it apparently doesn't show movies any longer. It is in category of theatres. See also List_of_cinema_and_movie_theater_chains#United_States, which has about as many chains as the list has of individual theatres. What is the recipe by which the bot operates? From what categories, say? And there is no room for human input? I have invested a lot of time in developing manual lists, and right now I am skeptical of this bot-generated one. More importantly to me I am trying to get an idea of whether occupations (or linguists) are particularly problematic. I see you created List of women linguists and I'm wondering whether your decision to create this article for population by ListeriaBot might shed some light on the matter. What level are you?
I found your name at Category:User js (probably because you posted the corresponding userbox on your user page), in the level-unspecified list of JavaScript programmers.
I was wondering how experienced you are at JavaScript, and whether you might be interested in getting involved with developing user scripts, hobnobbing with other JavaScript programmers, and organizing and improving JavaScript articles and support pages.

- Are you interested in writing user scripts? I've been working on a script for removing the redlinked entries from outlines and lists, which has a lot of basic structure in there, like adding an item to a Wikipedia menu, how to scrape the view page, store the scraped data in local memory, open and work in the editor, and so on. Part of my approach is to extensively document the code on the talk page as I complete each function, in the section Explanatory notes. That's so I can't forget how it all works; after a couple months away from it, the thing would look like Greek to me, and I kept having to look everything up all over again. In addition to explanations, I also include links to resources that explain this stuff in greater detail, to assist in learning the language in context. Another reason for the notes, is to present a walk-through tutorial that can help others see how this program works almost line-by-line, which may help them get up to speed on their own programs, and to provide opportunities to ask questions and possibly suggest alternative approaches. Hi - fascinating page but I have a couple of concerns. One is that it wasn't labelled as a user page and despite my adding the noindex template it still says it is indexed, which seems inappropriate. - I don't see how it is an essay. You even call it a missing topic and it looks like an article. See WP:FAKEARTICLE which says:
- Userspace is not a free web host and should not be used to indefinitely host pages that look like articles, old revisions, or deleted content, or your preferred version of disputed content. Pages that look like articles outside of mainspace should not be indexed for search engines.
- When a userspace page reaches a point where it can be included as an article consider moving it into mainspace or using its content appropriately in other relevant articles. {{Userpage blanked}} may be added to such pages that have not been edited for a considerable amount of time.
- Actual fake articles should be deleted as incompatible with the purpose of the project. Pages that egregiously present false information may be tagged with {{db-hoax}}. Blatant promotional may qualify for {{db-g11}} tagging. Clearly inappropriate content created by non-genuine contributors should be tagged with {{db-u5}}. Pages that preserve material previously deleted, without an active attempt to address the reasons for deletion, if left live, may be deleted by tagging with {{db-g4}}. Less blatant cases are routinely deleted at WP:MfD.

- Ok, it's a page about missing topics. It's still pretty clear that this shouldn't be indexed. You're using this for a project of your own and you've received some nice publicity for it, which is good. Whether we should be hosting it is another issue. Maybe it belongs elsewhere, I don't know. - I replied to that in my previous messages. My bot doesn't need a flag because it edits my own userpages. According to Wikipedia:Bot policy: "Valid operations without approval: In addition, any bot or automated editing process that affects only the operator's or their own userspace (user pages, user talk pages, user's module sandbox pages and subpages thereof), and which are not otherwise disruptive, may be run without prior approval." emijrp (talk) 13:41, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

I am helping to organize the Wiki Science Competition. I don't have all the details of the all the organizers and juror of the national juries.
If they have already contacted you, fine. if not, this is a last call to inform you.
if you'd like to join as a jurors, I can't tell you in which position. They might need you for the national jury for example. Or you can do both. We are thinking of adding two additional main jurors, but this depend on the final arrangement and profiles, but currently if you want to join the international jury it is a second-level juror.
But we can keep your name for next time, with pleasure!
We start in few weeks, but international jurors work later, from January 2018.

JavaScript, and the future of outlines
Hi Emijrp,
Last sprint you mentioned that you can read JS, and I got the impression you were interested in learning more. Therefore, I thought you might be interested in what I've been working on, including the extensive notes I present on how each script works (on their talk pages).
So far, there is:
- User:The Transhumanist/OutlineViewAnnotationToggler.js – this one provides a menu item to turn annotations on/off, so you can view lists bare when you want to (without annotations). When done, it will work on (the embedded lists of) all pages, not just outlines. Currently it is limited to outlines only, for development and testing purposes. It supports hotkey activation/deactivation of annotations, but that feature currently lacks an accurate viewport location reset for retaining the location on screen that the user was looking at. The program also needs an indicator that tells the user it is still on. Otherwise, you might wonder why a bare list has annotations in edit mode, when you go in to add some. :) Though it is functional as is. Check it out. After installing it, look at Outline of cell biology, and press ⇧ Shift+Alt+a. And again.
- User:The Transhumanist/RedlinksRemover.js – strips out entries in outlines that are nothing but a redlink. It removes them right out of the tree structure. But only end nodes (i.e., not parent nodes, which we need to keep). It delinks redlinks that have non-redlink offspring, or that have or are embedded in an annotation. It does not yet recognize entries that lack a bullet (it treats those as embedded).
It is my objective to build a set of scripts that fully automate the process of creating outlines. This end goal is a long way off (AI-complete?). In the meantime, I hope to increase editor productivity as much as I can. Fifty percent automation would double an editor's productivity. I think I could reach 80% automation (a five-fold increase in productivity) within a couple years. Comments and suggestions are welcome.
There's more:
- User:The Transhumanist/StripSearchInWikicode.js – another script, which strips WP search results down to a bare list of links, and inserts wikilink formatting for ease of insertion of those links into lists. This is useful for gathering links for outlines. I'd like this script to sort its results. So, if you know how, or know someone who knows how, please let me know.

Women in Red contest
Hi Emilio. In November I'm running a world contest for women. New articles, 1 kb minimum readable prose requirement. Given how much time I put into the Africa Destubathon with this I'm keen to minimize the time is takes to run it. I was wondering if you knew how to code a bot, something like ContestBot which can scan entries when submitted for readable prose count and no unsourced paragraphs.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:43, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

Basically what I want is when somebody submits an article, say like this for Uruguay Example the bot reads it and is able to do two things a] Check readable prose count of new article is minimum 1000 bytes. b] Makes sure that there are no unsourced paragraphs or ref errors. The bot states the readable prose count at the end of the entry and either ticks or x it. It also gives a tick or cross for no source problems. If one or both are not met the bot will put a cross by it and automatically send a talk page notice to the contestant informing them of the problem.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:45, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

For Maria example, it counts 1827 bytes (20 bytes more than the JS tool), perhaps for the dots or other special character. It detects correctly the referenced paragraphs. Thanks. Yours might be registering the prose in the captions as well then, try to exclude that. Formatting errors, no broken url links/plain url links, or sources without proper publisher information, inconsistencies in date format. Ah you've identified a problem in that per WP:LEAD the lead doesn't need sourcing if the article is longer length and supported in the body. I meant for the shorter articles with no other sections. Perhaps you could tweak the bot to ignore outsourced leads if the articles have sub sections with citations? - Ignored unsourced leads when there are sourced sections
- Ignored errors in refs when refs are sfn/harv
- Ignored lists, infoboxes
- Better prose count (example: Maude C. Davison, ~7600 before, ~7100 now)
Things to discuss:
- Show error when content is copied from PD material? Which templates or stuff should I check for that?
- Send talk messages or pings to users?

Thanks. If entering the contest to win prizes then yes, I think to make it fair we can't accept full PD material as people can copy and paste and generate a huge nunber of articles. Several things: The bot will need to:
- Decline entries created in the mainspace before November.
- Read articles which were created in User or Draft space and accept those which were only moved to the mainspace in November. Ideally it needs to give a statement for those ones to avoid confusion for the judges and state something like: "created in user or Draft space and submitted within November"
- Read hash tags (#) as well as bullet points when articles are submitted.

I appreciate it, it'll take some effort to get it right at first but definitely worth it. On Victoria Arbour, the formatting is fine too, can you get the bot to accept journal= paramater as publisher? With Lola Lange I think work= can also count as publisher and the bot needs to recognize a page citation is OK when the main source has all of the right info. Cléo de Verberena, website= also fine for publisher info. The bot approved that article on paragraph sourcing but it has several unsourced paragraphs, I guess because you told it to auto approve entries with unsourced leads but with sourcing in main body. I was wondering if it would be possible for the bot to read entries and post articles automatically on the main contest page Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest in the article achivements section. As an example, say an an entry is submitted for Andorra, that the bot can read the country name, the article name and the author and format it in the style done currently in the list? Thanks. The problem is that there are entries where the bot marked crosses on formatting and we couldn't work out why and were manually approved but the won't recognize that in the table. Help creating a new list
I saw you're a member of WP:WPLISTS, and I was wondering if you had any time or interest in helping me create a list of Honeywell products and services. User:Emijrp/POTD seems to be transcluding non-free files
Hi Emijrp. There's something about User:Emijrp/POTD that seems to be causing it to transclude File:Víctor Jara.jpg onto your user take page. Non-free content cannot be used on user pages per WP:NFCC#9 and WP:UP#Non-free files and the file keeps being flagged for review for appearing on your user page. I've only hidden the template, but perhaps you can tweak the page's syntax somehow so that it doesn't transclude anything that is non-free. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:56, 28 September 2018 (UTC)

Edit Warring and disruptive editing

You have been editwarring at 2019 Venezuelan blackout:
- 22:25 Mar 14 your addition of text sourced to Forbes was removed by Jamez42.
- 22.28 Mar 14 I explained on talk the problems with your edit. Forbes is not a reliable source for this text, and as explained by Jamez42, the content was cherrypicked and even went against the author's overall opinion.
- 07:46 Mar 15 you reinserted the same text, again removed at 07:57 Mar 15. This is editwarring; please see WP:3RR and WP:BRD. You had no consensus to re-add non-reliably sourced, cherry-picked text, and two editors had explained that to you. 3RR is not a license to revert three times; slow edit warring is still edit warring. Please consider this a warning.
But after that, you went further into WP:DISRUPT territory, with your edits at Caracas drone attack.
- You added information to the lead which, so far (unless you have other sources), is giving undue weight to one unnamed source in the lead of the article.[9]
- You added that information to the body of the article,[10] but have not explained on talk what you find new or significant in this source.[11]
- You also personalized the discussion rather than answer the question.[12]
But what you did next is getting into full-on WP:BATTLEGROUND:
- you created two blatant POV articles at 2019 Venezuelan power grid attack and
- 2019 Venezuelan power grid sabotage, and then you
- proposed moving Caracas drone attack to Attempted assassination of Nicolás Maduro, based again on your one unnamed source in one CNN video (which so far, you have not shown picked up by any other source).
If this is not enough, you:
- Created a POV entry at the current events portal, and
- you have a history of problematic edits at Venezuela Aid Live that are too numerous diff, talk page.
