Identifying the Gaps: Africa

Hi Emijrp

I have recently come across your epic project – the sum of all human knowledge on Wikipedia. I work on WikiAfrica which is an independent project that supports the Wikimedia movement in the creation and expansion of subject matter relating to Africa on Wikipedia. We do a number of projects.

Recently it has been troubling us that we cannot easily identify the gaps in content; or indeed know where to concentrate. Your project has been incredibly enlightening, but it is still difficult to see what is missing from each country. We were thinking of constructing a way of analysing the subject matter that should be covered about each country in the world (i.e. the information needed for anyone to have a complete understanding of any one country). If we created a metric of what should be covered, we could then see what has been covered, see the article rating and then we could see how much of each country is covered in each language version, and then that would give us a yard stick as to how much work needs to be done and where. Simple right – I am sure not!

So, rather than re-invent the wheel, I wondered if you know if there has been any content analysis to find out gaps in content coverage on Wikipedia? So, for example, is there a tool, rubric or a project that you know of where they have analysed what logically 'should' be covered about a country/topic and then analysed how well a specific country/topic is covered in Wikipedia. Does it ring any bells? If it hasn't I am very keen to start a project like that, but I don't want to develop something that already exists, but would rather work with taking it to the next level. Once we have identified the gaps in coverage, we can leverage the right people to work on those areas that need work. I'd like to discuss your experience and any idea or suggestions you might have - you can get me on my talk page or on isla [at] wikiafrica [dot] net. Isla Haddow (talk) 12:42, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Isla. I'm happy that you contacted me. I'm very interested in the coverage issue, and Africa is a notable case. The all human knowledge page is a big picture but as you can see don't offer much detail. Based in my experience as a red links searcher, some ways for discovering gaps may be:
As you can see there isn't an unique way. I think that the outlines are the basics and later lists by topic and country.
Personally, I started years ago creating stubs for every national library/archive/museum for any African country I can find info, and lists like List of museums in Botswana. That institutions hold the "human knowledge" of Africa, so I consider that having a stub is an invitation for them to complete their articles, link to digitised collections and who knows, perhaps in the future a partnership for uploading pictures or creating articles.
The only tool that I know to assess articles is the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team (Benin table in the right) but it says nothing about coverage. Anyway it can be used to compare African countries, doing a ranking to see which one have more articles and which less, and try to motivate the less covered countries to reach the other ones.
Not related with articles but with images are WLM-maps (zoom in Algeria) and Commons coverage (zoom in Cape Town) tools I developed recently. One for monuments, other a more exhaustive approach asking 1 photo/km2.
I hope this is useful for you. I am away from Wikipedia from time to time, but I'm willing to help WikiAfrica if available. emijrp (talk) 15:39, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There's one more tool that might help: Mapping Wikipedia. It maps the geotagged articles in a few large Wikipedias and displays them as dots, colored according to different criteria. As expected, the Sahara region is rather blank, but also some other regions. Cheers, — Yerpo Eh? 17:45, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much, I could not have asked for a better answer. understandably, this is going to take me a while to go through. I will be back with questions, but thank you so much emijrp and Yerpo!!! Isla Haddow (talk) 15:18, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK, take your time. I found this site on African biographies that may help in doing a red links list. emijrp (talk) 12:35, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just an FYI, you may want to have the bot's talk page either redirect to yours, or convert the redirect to a soft redirect (which I have done; feel free to revert) in the event that another editor performs an edit that automatically gets posted on the redirect's target (such as what happened with my Twinkle-related edit. Overlinking

Hi, I see you've been creating a lot of writer stubs.

Please note that on the English Wikipedia, words such as "writer" and "historian" are not normally linked. If you stopped linking these items, it would save us a lot of trouble in manually running scripts to remove these links.

Thanks. Tony (talk) 13:58, 21 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Proposed deletion of Digital Dark Age (film)

No assertion of notability.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. I was amazed and very pleased when you did that. Incredibly helpful ! Thanks

And then... I felt a bit frustrated because I had no idea how you collected that data practically speaking :) and wanted something similar on another project. Is that WikiData Query tool ? Or what tool did you use to do that ? I want to explore this tool I did not think of using before. Thanks. Anthere (talk)

digging further, I found this. With the bot to update. Nice !

Hello @Anthere:, I am glad that you like the list :-) It is generated using {{Wikidata list}}. Any page with that template is updated by a bot daily. For retrieving the data from Wikidata, you need to add a query in sparql or wdq. It is a bit techy but I can help you (I am still learning too). emijrp (talk) 14:58, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Here is an example for Kenya red links. The relevant part is "wdt:P21 wd:Q6581072" (gender = female) and "wdt:P27 wd:Q114" (country = Kenya). P = property in Wikidata and Q = Wikidata item.

{{Wikidata list
|sparql=SELECT ?item WHERE { ?item wdt:P21 wd:Q6581072 . ?item wdt:P27 wd:Q114 . ?sitelink schema:about ?item . FILTER NOT EXISTS { ?wfr schema:about ?item . ?wfr schema:inLanguage "en" } } limit 1000
|sort=label
|columns=number:#,label:Article,description,p569,p570,p18,item
|thumb=100
|links=red
}}
{{Wikidata list end}}

It is a bit tech indeed. I am going to test that thing a little bit, but I think I am likely to be back to you at some point :) Thank you for your proposal to help ! Anthere (talk)

List of North Korean television series

I'll tell you just what I told Finnusertop: Marking Let's Trim's designation as "Education" instead of "Comedy" as "Intended Genre" is not culturally insensitive. Let's Trim is television. Who cares what country it's from? If What Not To Wear wound up on PBS and someone inferred its genre were Education, shouldn't we say its genre is also intended? Let me be clear about this: I am not treating television differently based on its nationality. I don't have access to Template:Infobox_television, but "genre" should be "intended genre", no matter where the TV program is coming from.103.14.61.123 (talk) 12:44, 4 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't violated anything. I am continuously adding content and new references to articles, while you and others are removing sourced statements. Are you going to continue doing that? emijrp (talk) 20:10, 5 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
So, you did know about this rule (not surprising given your experience), but you think that your edits were not reverts? If so, you probably do not mind reporting this to WP:3RRNB to get an opinion by an administrator? Please note that during your latest edits you either did not respond on article talk page, or responded but did not provide sources to support your assertions. My very best wishes (talk) 20:18, 5 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nope - what? Does it mean you are going to continue doing what you are doing? My very best wishes (talk) 20:42, 5 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You are in violation of 3RR. If you care to read the fine print, you'll find that fiddling the content as if you are introducing something other to the content you've been pushing is considered intentionally disruptive, if not plain gaming the system. Admins and other editors as not so foolish as to be incapable of differentiating between new content and a rehash.
You are also demonstrating WP:BATTLEGROUND behaviour which suggests that you're WP:NOTHERE. I hope I'm wrong about that, but the POV language and WP:TITLE you are trying to introduce into a list that doesn't actually meet with any RS as to whether it constitutes 'vandalism' or 'extremism' other than via WP:BIASed sources. Decisions on how the list is to be treated is entirely dependent on consensus at the moment, therefore I urge you to continue with the discussion in WP:BRD as opposed to edit warring the content. Unfortunately, I'm flat out IRL and am only logging in despite my better judgement and time constraints. Please remember that we're here to represent mainstream views, even if it is against our own (better/worse/worst) judgement. It is not our job to WP:RIGHTGREATWRONGS. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 01:14, 6 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

List of movie theaters

Hi, I see you're involved in discussion at Talk:List of destroyed heritage, where I edited also at least once, and in general I am in support of that list. But I contact you to ask about List of movie theaters, which is a bot-created / bot-maintained list. That is woefully incomplete, with just 29 U.S. theatres listed when I bet I have created articles on almost that many myself, without even trying. There are 250 to 300 or so historic theatres listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, the majority of which will have articles by now. For example Warner Theatre (Torrington, Connecticut), which is a movie theatre in my point of view, although it apparently doesn't show movies any longer. It is in category of theatres. See also List_of_cinema_and_movie_theater_chains#United_States, which has about as many chains as the list has of individual theatres. What is the recipe by which the bot operates? From what categories, say? And there is no room for human input? I have invested a lot of time in developing manual lists, and right now I am skeptical of this bot-generated one. Have there been general discussions about bot-generated list-articles, if so where? sincerely, --doncram 02:19, 6 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Emijrp. It has been over six months since you last edited your Articles for Creation draft article submission, "April 25 House of Culture".

In accordance with our policy that Articles for Creation is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

I found your name at Category:User js (probably because you posted the corresponding userbox on your user page), in the level-unspecified list of JavaScript programmers.

I was wondering how experienced you are at JavaScript, and whether you might be interested in getting involved with developing user scripts, hobnobbing with other JavaScript programmers, and organizing and improving JavaScript articles and support pages.

We do all of that and more at the JavaScript WikiProject.

Hello @The Transhumanist:. My JavaScript level is low by now. I added me to category because I can read it, but I still have to learn a lot. emijrp (talk) 18:55, 13 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Are you interested in writing user scripts? I've been working on a script for removing the redlinked entries from outlines and lists, which has a lot of basic structure in there, like adding an item to a Wikipedia menu, how to scrape the view page, store the scraped data in local memory, open and work in the editor, and so on. Part of my approach is to extensively document the code on the talk page as I complete each function, in the section Explanatory notes. That's so I can't forget how it all works; after a couple months away from it, the thing would look like Greek to me, and I kept having to look everything up all over again. In addition to explanations, I also include links to resources that explain this stuff in greater detail, to assist in learning the language in context. Another reason for the notes, is to present a walk-through tutorial that can help others see how this program works almost line-by-line, which may help them get up to speed on their own programs, and to provide opportunities to ask questions and possibly suggest alternative approaches. Feel free to take a look and tell me what you think. The Transhumanist 15:07, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo. You created an article for this building, but there is also an article for Tudela Cathedral which appears to be the same building under another name.--Thoughtfortheday (talk) 11:13, 21 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - fascinating page but I have a couple of concerns. One is that it wasn't labelled as a user page and despite my adding the noindex template it still says it is indexed, which seems inappropriate. The other is that it's huge. 316,143 bytes. Much larger than we expect of articles and not surprisingly slow loading. What's your plan for this page? Doug Weller talk 12:49, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I have added {{essay}} template to the top and {{userpage}} to the bottom. Regards noindex, I want search engines index this page. Why not? emijrp (talk) 15:42, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see how it is an essay. You even call it a missing topic and it looks like an article. See WP:FAKEARTICLE which says:
Userspace is not a free web host and should not be used to indefinitely host pages that look like articles, old revisions, or deleted content, or your preferred version of disputed content. Pages that look like articles outside of mainspace should not be indexed for search engines.
When a userspace page reaches a point where it can be included as an article consider moving it into mainspace or using its content appropriately in other relevant articles. {{Userpage blanked}} may be added to such pages that have not been edited for a considerable amount of time.
Actual fake articles should be deleted as incompatible with the purpose of the project. Pages that egregiously present false information may be tagged with {{db-hoax}}. Blatant promotional may qualify for {{db-g11}} tagging. Clearly inappropriate content created by non-genuine contributors should be tagged with {{db-u5}}. Pages that preserve material previously deleted, without an active attempt to address the reasons for deletion, if left live, may be deleted by tagging with {{db-g4}}. Less blatant cases are routinely deleted at WP:MfD.
I'm not trying to be difficult here, but this seems pretty clear. Also, is your bot approved? Doug Weller talk 16:37, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't call it a missing topic, it is a page about missing topics. What is pretty clear? It isn't a fake article, hoax, promotional or inappropriate. My bot doesn't need flag as it edits in my userpage namespace. emijrp (talk) 17:50, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, it's a page about missing topics. It's still pretty clear that this shouldn't be indexed. You're using this for a project of your own and you've received some nice publicity for it, which is good. Whether we should be hosting it is another issue. Maybe it belongs elsewhere, I don't know. Doug Weller talk 18:12, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent editing history shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Your bot

Incidentally (tangentially related to the issue of your user space page): is Emijrpbot (talk · contribs) compliant with bot policy? Wouldn't it require bot approval for whatever it is doing? Fut.Perf. 13:36, 3 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I replied to that in my previous messages. My bot doesn't need a flag because it edits my own userpages. According to Wikipedia:Bot policy: "Valid operations without approval: In addition, any bot or automated editing process that affects only the operator's or their own userspace (user pages, user talk pages, user's module sandbox pages and subpages thereof), and which are not otherwise disruptive, may be run without prior approval." emijrp (talk) 13:41, 3 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Movement Strategy reminder

Hi. You contributed in a previous part of the discussion, so this is just a reminder to you (and any interested talkpagewatchers), that it's the second week of our Movement Strategy Cycle 3 discussion. There's a new topic each week in July, and this week's is: How could we capture the sum of all knowledge when much of it cannot be verified in traditional ways? You can see more details, and suggest solutions or respond to other people's thoughts (from this week and last week) at Wikipedia:Wikimedia Strategy 2017. Jurors for WikiScienceCompetition 2017

Hi, sorry to bother you. I see from this query that you are wikimedian working in the academia.

I am helping to organize the Wiki Science Competition. I don't have all the details of the all the organizers and juror of the national juries.

If they have already contacted you, fine. if not, this is a last call to inform you.

if you'd like to join as a jurors, I can't tell you in which position. They might need you for the national jury for example. Or you can do both. We are thinking of adding two additional main jurors, but this depend on the final arrangement and profiles, but currently if you want to join the international jury it is a second-level juror.

But we can keep your name for next time, with pleasure!

We start in few weeks, but international jurors work later, from January 2018.

In any case I hope you can spread the news in your working environment. Let me know.--Alexmar983 (talk) 09:27, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Alexmar983, thanks for the invitation though I can't help this year. I am pretty busy. Regards. emijrp (talk) 16:54, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's fine in any case. I hope you can inform some of your contacts and we can contact you next time. Now that we have a good contact database, next search will be much easier. Thank you for the quick reply!--Alexmar983 (talk) 01:48, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

JavaScript, and the future of outlines

Hi Emijrp,

Last sprint you mentioned that you can read JS, and I got the impression you were interested in learning more. Therefore, I thought you might be interested in what I've been working on, including the extensive notes I present on how each script works (on their talk pages).

So far, there is:

  • User:The Transhumanist/OutlineViewAnnotationToggler.js – this one provides a menu item to turn annotations on/off, so you can view lists bare when you want to (without annotations). When done, it will work on (the embedded lists of) all pages, not just outlines. Currently it is limited to outlines only, for development and testing purposes. It supports hotkey activation/deactivation of annotations, but that feature currently lacks an accurate viewport location reset for retaining the location on screen that the user was looking at. The program also needs an indicator that tells the user it is still on. Otherwise, you might wonder why a bare list has annotations in edit mode, when you go in to add some. :) Though it is functional as is. Check it out. After installing it, look at Outline of cell biology, and press ⇧ Shift+Alt+a. And again.
  • User:The Transhumanist/RedlinksRemover.js – strips out entries in outlines that are nothing but a redlink. It removes them right out of the tree structure. But only end nodes (i.e., not parent nodes, which we need to keep). It delinks redlinks that have non-redlink offspring, or that have or are embedded in an annotation. It does not yet recognize entries that lack a bullet (it treats those as embedded).

It is my objective to build a set of scripts that fully automate the process of creating outlines. This end goal is a long way off (AI-complete?). In the meantime, I hope to increase editor productivity as much as I can. Fifty percent automation would double an editor's productivity. I think I could reach 80% automation (a five-fold increase in productivity) within a couple years. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

There's more:

  • User:The Transhumanist/StripSearchInWikicode.js – another script, which strips WP search results down to a bare list of links, and inserts wikilink formatting for ease of insertion of those links into lists. This is useful for gathering links for outlines. I'd like this script to sort its results. So, if you know how, or know someone who knows how, please let me know.

Script and script feature requests (for outlines) are welcome. The Transhumanist 07:05, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Women in Red contest

Hi Emilio. In November I'm running a world contest for women. New articles, 1 kb minimum readable prose requirement. Given how much time I put into the Africa Destubathon with this I'm keen to minimize the time is takes to run it. I was wondering if you knew how to code a bot, something like ContestBot which can scan entries when submitted for readable prose count and no unsourced paragraphs.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:43, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: Sure. If articles are tagged with a template or category, I can code a bot to generate some basic statistics (bytes, number of sources, etc). Set a sample article, and detail exactly what metrics you want. emijrp (talk) 14:32, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks the contest pages are below:

Basically what I want is when somebody submits an article, say like this for Uruguay Example the bot reads it and is able to do two things a] Check readable prose count of new article is minimum 1000 bytes. b] Makes sure that there are no unsourced paragraphs or ref errors. The bot states the readable prose count at the end of the entry and either ticks or x it. It also gives a tick or cross for no source problems. If one or both are not met the bot will put a cross by it and automatically send a talk page notice to the contestant informing them of the problem.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:45, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

So the bot would do something like:

User:Ipigott

So would this be OK Emilio?♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:16, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: Yes, it is ok. I will work on this soon. The contest doesn't start until November, right? emijrp (talk) 16:20, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

November yes. Gracias. The bot will be crucial to making the contests sustainable though. Potentially we could get thousands more articles a year and improve existing quality too. BTW your talk page is very long can you archive?♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:14, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: OK. I am a bit busy right now, though the bot is easy and only needs a few hours of work. Ping me again in October, if I haven't code it yet. emijrp (talk) 10:23, 21 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, No worries, Wikipedia:ContestBot I think will be the ideal place for it. I need to know for certain that a bot can be used as I will need to give a prize for reviewing if not that's all. Plenty of time still, I'll remind you in a few weeks!♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:26, 21 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, it would be good if you could get the bot coded in the next week, a lot on this is depending on how efficiently it can run to assess entries.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:30, 7 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: I will do it next week. In the María Stagnero example, how do you count prose? External tool or removing wiki syntax (refs, cats, etc)? And what kind of format errors I have to detect? emijrp (talk) 19:53, 7 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Copy this into your common.js, it reads readable prose siz

importScript('User:Dr_pda/prosesize.js'); // User:Dr pda/prosesize

It reads 1807 B (294 words)readable prose for Maria. You'll see "page size" come up in the left column. Can the bot use that tool to measure length?♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:51, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: I will use my own code, I can't mix Javascript and Python. Bot is almost ready [5]. For Maria example, it counts 1827 bytes (20 bytes more than the JS tool), perhaps for the dots or other special character. It detects correctly the referenced paragraphs. What kind of format errors should it detect? Missing categories? --emijrp (talk) 15:45, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Yours might be registering the prose in the captions as well then, try to exclude that. Formatting errors, no broken url links/plain url links, or sources without proper publisher information, inconsistencies in date format. Web and book citation templates not essential but as long as the sources are clean and consistent.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:31, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can you make the minimum prose count 750 bytes of readable prose? I think that would be best given that often African women etc don't have many sources.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:34, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: Sure, bytes number can be customised easily. I have added detection for plain links and refs without publisher info. The date check is a bit more complicated, and I will progress soon. emijrp (talk) 16:55, 12 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How is the coding going? Can you tweak back to 1 kb minimum requirement? Putting up $75 of book prizes to people who help build the missing lists for the contests.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:16, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: The code is almost complete (prose + some format errors), but you know, these things need to be adjusted the first day or two of the contest. I have to request bot flag btw. Do you want the bot to run once an hour? Every 10 minutes? emijrp (talk) 11:45, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr. Blofeld: Flag requested. I will be using my account "Emijrpbot". What is Wikipedia:ContestBot page for? Analysis are printed in lists by continent. emijrp (talk) 14:24, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OK no worries. Yes I want the bot to patrol the six continent page when people submit an article and for it to be able to tick or x length and sourcing. It would be good to do a test run before the contest starts.. I think every hour would be fine, check the six continent pages every hour and to read whatever [[]] linked when submitted under somebody's user name.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:51, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can you make it 1000 bytes minimum requirement rather than 750?♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:55, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to see this is progressing so well. Dr. Blofeld: I agree with 1,000 rather than 750.--Ipigott (talk) 08:01, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr. Blofeld: Pick a continent/country and add sample user and articles, and I will launch the bot. emijrp (talk) 16:45, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OK, Ipigott, Megalibrarygirl, SusunW and Rosiestep pick a continent entry page, and lets put some articles on it and pretned we're contestants to test this.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:25, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. Blofeld I've added four to Europe and 1 to Africa. Would you also like some that are too short? Repinging SusunW--Ipigott (talk) 13:15, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'll create the one on a Finnish CEO still in my sandbox later.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:11, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure that I understand what I am supposed to do, but I've done a ton of Caribbean nurses this month, so I put 3 on the Latin America and Caribbean page and marked them as test. I also put 2 on the African page. Is that what you needed? SusunW (talk) 15:54, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr. Blofeld and Ipigott: I put 2 on North America and 1 on Oceania, as well. I saw that Ian signed his User X with his signature and I just input mine. Does that make a difference? I have no articles this month in Asia, though I have a ton more in Europe. SusunW (talk) 16:13, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I think Emi wants to test one page, I'll wait to see what he wants.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:21, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I added Fanny Zampini Salazar as a test article for Belgium. It is very short (~1200 characters) and includes PD. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:31, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr. Blofeld: Isn't Mexico part of North America? I've always considered it as such, but I am a geographically challenged Texan. ;) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 17:30, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I always thought of Mexico as Central America, Spanish world!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:45, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Megalibrarygirl: You are quite right in thinking that Mexico is in North America. The problem here is that the U.S.A. and Canada take up such a huge proportion of our community that we thought it sensible to include it with Latin America and the remainder of the Americas.--Ipigott (talk) 18:24, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: Should the first paragraph be referenced? For example, Bertha Mkhize doesn't pass the test. emijrp (talk) 17:52, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ah you've identified a problem in that per WP:LEAD the lead doesn't need sourcing if the article is longer length and supported in the body. I meant for the shorter articles with no other sections. Perhaps you could tweak the bot to ignore outsourced leads if the articles have sub sections with citations? For those it will still need to check the body has no outsourced paragraphs.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:03, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: I will try to add that. I have launched the bot, please check the results. emijrp (talk) 20:20, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Great, except it's giving cross for references for Susun when it's fine. Can you get it to automatically approve sfn notes and harv ref templates as people who use them generally know how to format.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:28, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fixing errors

How does it measure readable prose? Maude C. Davison I get 7124 readable prose as it should ignore lists and infoboxes, where did the extra 500 bytes come from?♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:36, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Did Fanny Zampini Salazar pass even though it has PD material? --Rosiestep (talk) 04:52, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a bit confused about all this. I received no feedback on the entries I made. It would be nice to know whether or not they were acceptable.--Ipigott (talk) 07:35, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld, Ipigott, and Rosiestep: Changes in the last version (please check again the continent lists):

  • Ignored unsourced leads when there are sourced sections
  • Ignored errors in refs when refs are sfn/harv
  • Ignored lists, infoboxes
  • Better prose count (example: Maude C. Davison, ~7600 before, ~7100 now)

Things to discuss:

  • Show error when content is copied from PD material? Which templates or stuff should I check for that?
  • Send talk messages or pings to users?

Regards. emijrp (talk) 08:27, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. If entering the contest to win prizes then yes, I think to make it fair we can't accept full PD material as people can copy and paste and generate a huge nunber of articles. PD material articles are welcome on the main creations list though. There is a copyright tool, I don't know if the bot could use that.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:38, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: The tool is cool, but bot can't decide itself if article is PD, that is a human task. Bot could search for PD templates in wikitext though, adding ☒N in those cases. Question: if a user add an article to the continent list, and he/she keeps working on it, should bot update the bytes figure (and doing format analysis) until 30 November? That is the current behaviour. --emijrp (talk) 15:37, 28 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: So, should I launch the bot today? emijrp (talk) 10:58, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, of course, the contest is open :-). Can you tweak the bot to decline entries created in October?♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:10, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Several things: The bot will need to:

  • Decline entries created in the mainspace before November.
  • Read articles which were created in User or Draft space and accept those which were only moved to the mainspace in November. Ideally it needs to give a statement for those ones to avoid confusion for the judges and state something like: "created in user or Draft space and submitted within November" checkY
  • Read hash tags (#) as well as bullet points when articles are submitted.

OK?♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:35, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted this, the bot just deleted the submissions, any idea why?♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:35, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: I was doing tests and forgot to skip the save, sorry. Now it should be better. I have added your three requests from your last message. Things I see: missing source in 1st paragraph and no sections, and many "missing publisher" errors. --emijrp (talk) 14:16, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate it, it'll take some effort to get it right at first but definitely worth it. On Victoria Arbour, the formatting is fine too, can you get the bot to accept journal= paramater as publisher? With Lola Lange I think work= can also count as publisher and the bot needs to recognize a page citation is OK when the main source has all of the right info. Can you do that? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:34, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cléo de Verberena, website= also fine for publisher info. The bot approved that article on paragraph sourcing but it has several unsourced paragraphs, I guess because you told it to auto approve entries with unsourced leads but with sourcing in main body. Is there a way around that? All paragraphs needs sourcing in body as well.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:51, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bot stated "Unsourced paragraphs (2)". emijrp (talk) 15:56, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, work=, journal= and website= parameters can count as publisher so update that.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:54, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ok. emijrp (talk) 15:56, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

And newspaper= as well :-). Can you rerun the bot over the ones it's already approved with the updated criteria, thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:06, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Magdalena Borsuk-Białynicka for some reason it's registering unsourced paragraphs for articles like that, and it's only one paragraph..♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:16, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Because user added ghost newlines and bot thinks they are different paragraphs. I am now skipping that newlines. emijrp (talk) 16:31, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: Btw, bot overwrites the line where the article name is, so if you need to add any clarification to the bot assessment, use a new line with double **. emijrp (talk) 16:34, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Gertrude Barnum first line isn't sourced but the article is fine. Perhaps if the first paragraph is a one liner and it has plenty of sourced paragraphs underneath without sections it can approve those?♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:35, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

done. emijrp (talk) 16:48, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for moving this thread down, great minds think alike ;-). I was wondering if it would be possible for the bot to read entries and post articles automatically on the main contest page Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest in the article achivements section. As an example, say an an entry is submitted for Andorra, that the bot can read the country name, the article name and the author and format it in the style done currently in the list? That would save time chasing up those who forget and constantly having to update the list manually. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:42, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The bot seems to be only working for North America at present, any idea why?♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:10, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can you make sure the bot runs regularly through the other continents too as some of the entries haven't been approved in 12 hrs +♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:21, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

done. emijrp (talk) 14:33, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The bot overrode me here.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:02, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: Bot overwrites the line where article name is located. Better add a comment below (**) or let's see why the bot wrongly crossed that page. emijrp (talk) 14:33, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can you figure out why the bot is producing a cross for sourcing on Mary Tuck?♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:25, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can you try to get the bot to patrol the other continents more regularly please? The idea originally was for it to approve it just after it is posted. Isn't there a way for the bot to register when somebody places a new entry on the page? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:09, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

now it runs every 10 minutes. emijrp (talk) 21:01, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

agency= also an adequate publisher info, can you add that? Cheers.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:05, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

done. emijrp (talk) 21:00, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. Another tweak, can you get the bot to accept entries which were redirected before November and expanded this month as they're effectively New articles. There's a few it rejected which will need to be updated.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:30, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

For some reason the bot approved Maria Carlsson when it had two unsourced paragraphs. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:44, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

The Special Barnstar
Overall I think the bot is doing a great job and saving a lot of time running it. Still a few tweaks and improvements to be made but you deserve this for the impressive effort. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:33, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox settlement cleanup

Maybe all created by you on three days in 2007. Can you run a bot on these? https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Bot_requests&diff=809276844&oldid=809275234 77.179.11.240 (talk) 04:04, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Scoreboard

Hi is there any way the bot can register how many articles it approves and run a scoreboard of the most approved articles by editor? I think having that feature might motivate some to edit.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:43, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest/Scoreboard. emijrp (talk) 18:13, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. The problem is that there are entries where the bot marked crosses on formatting and we couldn't work out why and were manually approved but the won't recognize that in the table. You can't edit the bot cross to a tick as it automatically changes it back. Is there anyway for the bot to recognize a manual tick after the cross is given?♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:59, 19 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well?♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:13, 25 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: There isn't an easy and perfect solution. I think that ignoring format errors in the scoreboard is an option. emijrp (talk) 20:31, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Update

Hi can you tweak the bot to accept date formatting where there is published written dates and digit access dates. David Eppstein has kindly alerted me that this acceptable by MOS so please update asap thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:20, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: Example please? emijrp (talk) 15:33, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Jo Hardin Ref 2 and 4. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:38, 29 November 2017 (UTC) Also the bot has been slow to update the scoreboard for other regions, can you make sure it runs now until the end of the contest?♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:21, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. emijrp (talk) 15:33, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The bot hasn't checked some of the pages in two days. Can you try to get it to run asap as it's important at this late stage in the contest, thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:09, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Working on it. emijrp (talk) 15:33, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

About WikiPapers

In WikiPapers, do you include publications that used Wikipedia as part of its analysis (but the subject is not related to Wikipedia)? I have published a book chapter and it looked at a weather phenomenon. I included Wikipedia pageviews in my analysis, but the subject is not about Wikipedia. @OhanaUnited: Yeah, that kind of papers are in the scope too. You can include it. emijrp (talk) 20:41, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in study

Hello,

I am E. Whittaker, an intern at Wikimedia with the Scoring Team to create a labeled dataset, and potentially a tool, to help editors deal with incivility when they encounter it on talk pages. We are currently recruiting editors to be interviewed about their experiences with incivility on talk pages. Would you be interested in being interviewed? I am contacting you because of your involvement in Wikipedia’s Women in Red project. The interviews should take ~1 hour, and will be conducted over BlueJeans (which does allow interviews to be recorded). If, so, please email me at ewhit@umich.edu in order to schedule an interview.

Notice

The article José María de Anguita has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unable to find any sources that indicate this guy meets WP:NARTIST or WP:ANYBIO. A short listing in a biographical dictionary is hardly enough to prove notability by our standards. For what it's worth, Spanish Wikipedia deleted this guy's entry in 2012 for lacking notability.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ♠PMC(talk) 10:02, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help creating a new list

I saw you're a member of WP:WPLISTS, and I was wondering if you had any time or interest in helping me create a list of Honeywell products and services. In the interest of transparency, I have a paid COI, but it was recommended to me by another user that a list article would be a better space for this content than the Honeywell article itself. I created a draft from the content I initially proposed for the article here. I previously reached out to another member of WP:LISTS who helped me refine it to this point. Do you have any advice or suggestions on how I could further improve it for publishing?--FacultiesIntact (talk) 00:23, 6 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free content cannot be used on user pages per WP:NFCC#9 and WP:UP#Non-free files and the file keeps being flagged for review for appearing on your user page. I've only hidden the template, but perhaps you can tweak the page's syntax somehow so that it doesn't transclude anything that is non-free. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:56, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Marchjuly: Fixed. emijrp (talk) 07:06, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I stumbled upon one of your older pages. It seems to be hosted in the old toolserver. Do you know if this was ever transferred over to the WMF labs server? OhanaUnitedTalk page 04:10, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@OhanaUnited: I don't think so. Now with Wikidata autofilling infoboxes, it isn't very useful. emijrp (talk) 07:40, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for all the thanks!

And thank you for your Wikidata work. A related question - are you able to help with this category Category:Articles without Wikidata item in adding them to WD? Thanks again. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 14:28, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Lugnuts: Launching the bot on that category, I hope it works. Thanks for creating so many articles, don't stop! emijrp (talk) 14:41, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent! I won't! :D Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 14:45, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Lugnuts: It is working. Do you receive a notification for each Wikidata item? emijrp (talk) 10:08, 19 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Brilliant - thanks for helping with this. No, I've turned off my WD notifications, otherwise my watchlist collapses under its own gravity! Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 10:09, 19 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article John Caziel has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced article that was first written in 2011. Yet despite multiple edits, it is still only one sentence.

Deletion discussion about 2019 Venezuelan power grid attack

Hello, Emijrp,

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Jamez42 and it's nice to meet you :-)

I wanted to let you know that I've started a discussion about whether an article that you created, 2019 Venezuelan power grid attack should be deleted. Your comments are welcome over Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2019 Venezuelan power grid attack .

You might like to note that such discussions usually run for seven days and are not ballot-polls. And, our guide about effectively contributing to such discussions is worth a read. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Jamez42}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

Edit Warring and disruptive editing

Please archive your talk page.

You have been editwarring at 2019 Venezuelan blackout:

  1. 22:25 Mar 14 your addition of text sourced to Forbes was removed by Jamez42.
  2. 22.28 Mar 14 I explained on talk the problems with your edit. Forbes is not a reliable source for this text, and as explained by Jamez42, the content was cherrypicked and even went against the author's overall opinion.
  3. 07:46 Mar 15 you reinserted the same text, again removed at 07:57 Mar 15. This is editwarring; please see WP:3RR and WP:BRD. You had no consensus to re-add non-reliably sourced, cherry-picked text, and two editors had explained that to you. 3RR is not a license to revert three times; slow edit warring is still edit warring. Please consider this a warning.

But after that, you went further into WP:DISRUPT territory, with your edits at Caracas drone attack.

  1. You added information to the lead which, so far (unless you have other sources), is giving undue weight to one unnamed source in the lead of the article.[9]
  2. You added that information to the body of the article,[10] but have not explained on talk what you find new or significant in this source.[11]
  3. You also personalized the discussion rather than answer the question.[12]

But what you did next is getting into full-on WP:BATTLEGROUND:

  1. you created two blatant POV articles at 2019 Venezuelan power grid attack and
  2. 2019 Venezuelan power grid sabotage, and then you
  3. proposed moving Caracas drone attack to Attempted assassination of Nicolás Maduro, based again on your one unnamed source in one CNN video (which so far, you have not shown picked up by any other source).

If this is not enough, you:

  1. Created a POV entry at the current events portal, and
  2. you have a history of problematic edits at Venezuela Aid Live that are too numerous diff, talk page.

It appears to me that you should not be editing Venezuelan topics. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 18:21, 15 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
