Miss Universe 2023 will be the 72nd Miss Universe pageant. The winner of the Miss Universe 2022 pageant, R'Bonney Gabriel of the United States, will crown her successor at the end of the event.

In January 14, 2023, during the Miss Universe 2022 pageant, the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele announced that the 72nd Miss Universe edition will be held in their country after a meeting with the organizers of the pageant.[1]

Selection of participants

Contestants from nine countries and territories have been selected to compete in the competition. Two of these delegates were appointed to their positions after being a runner-up of their national pageant or being selected through a casting process.

Thirty-three countries will return , two countries will debut to the competition, and one country will withdraw. Madagascar last competed in 1961 which makes it the country's first time to compete after 62 years of absence from Miss Universe, Bonaire last completed in 1999, Latvia and the Northern Marianas last completed in 2006, Turks and Caicos last completed in 2014, Montenegro and Serbia last completed in 2015, Ethiopia, Guyana, Iraq, and Slovenia last completed in 2017, Sri Lanka and Zambia last completed in 2018, Egypt, Georgia, Guam, Lithuania, Mongolia, New Zealand, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and the US Virgin Islands last completed in 2019, Barbados last competed in 2020, while the others last competed in 2021. Ghana will withdraw from the competition for five years for unknown reasons.

From this edition onwards, the Miss Universe Organization has announced that they will accept married women as well as women with children to compete in the pageant. However, the age limit is still required.[4][5]
