My status as a mass message sender
Hi Xaosflux, when you granted me mms you said "+mms per Special:Diff/695514542 at WP:PERM for ArbCom clerking purposes". Was this constructed to prevent me from other uses, i.e. can I answer requests at Wikipedia talk:Mass message senders#Requests for message delivery? I understand completely if it's just for clerking, I just wanted to make sure I was clear on my restrictions. Thanks! Kharkiv07 (T) 02:58, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
- Hello Kharkiv07, so long as you have a good understanding of WP:MMS and WP:CANVASS; I think it is fine for you to process requests from others. Please keep in mind, others are very likely to have malformed requests, errors, etc. I suggest you very carefully review any request, especially if it is to a large audience. Before sending anyone else's mass message out, I usually send it to my self or one of my alt-accounts only - to make sure it doesn't break the pages. One thing to check on user talk pages is to add continuing text after the section, and start a new section - make sure the page isn't broken by unclosed tags etc. I normally add a html comment to the message with the name of the requester and a link to the request as well. I will note your user rights logs that this is for general purposes. Happy editing, — xaosflux Talk 03:22, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
- For example, see the notes I just placed at Wikipedia_talk:Mass_message_senders#Request_for_mass_message_delivery:_February_4.2C_2016 on an example of a request that needed tweaking, and how it was demonstrated in testing. — xaosflux Talk 03:51, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

Category:Films directed by David MacDonald (director) ⋅
Hi Xaosflux
I was just wondering what happened with Category:Films directed by David MacDonald (director)?
I had tagged Category:Films directed by David MacDonald for speedy renaming to Category:Films directed by David MacDonald (director), and listed[1] it at WP:CFD/S.
I was just looking at the CFD/S list, and saw that the line was redlinked, but still listed.
A few checks, and I see that you created the new page and deleted the old one, that your bot Fluxbot updated the pages in the category.
It all seems to have been done OK, although the category page should really have been moved rather than copy-pasted, to preserve attribution. But that's no biggie.
However, my reason for posting is that I am puzzled about why you did this before the 48-hour waiting period had expired, and why you didn't remove the item for WP:CFD/S when done?
Was there some particular hurry? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:19, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
- @BrownHairedGirl: Hi there, so short story - was trying to verify a general bot processing problem that is going around (Wikipedia:Bot_owners'_noticeboard#Breaking_change) so I looked for one of the least controversial tasks I could find to do a short run on, happened to be this WP:CFDS. Not that there was really anything that we had to have attribution for on the category page, but I did just clean that up now with a history merge. I haven't really worked WP:CFDS lately, but in the past these usually got left on the page until a batch were done, so people could see progress. I don't plan on running any more anytime soon - let me know if you have any other concerns. — xaosflux Talk 16:10, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
- Ah, fair enough. There was nothing controversial or out of order, it just seemed a little odd. But it makes sense now!
- Thanks for processing it, and for the explanation. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 16:12, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
Hello
Let me apologize if I made the wrong request. I was just trying to protect a page but I don't know how to do it. How can I protect a page? For example my user page. Thanks in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Frank R 1981 (talk • contribs) .
- @Frank R 1981: - Hi there Frank, for the most part pages are not protected at all, that's one of the aspects of being a Wiki. Protection is a broad measure that only administrators can use, for example if I applied full page protection to User:Frank R 1981 then it means that no one can change it anymore, not even you. If you do want to nominate a page for protection, you can list it here: WP:RFPP. If you can explain what you are trying to accomplish, I may have some other suggestions for how to proceed. — xaosflux Talk 03:51, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for your help my friend. I hope I don't have to use the protection option anytime soon, but it was good to know how some stuff in Wikipedia work. ;) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Frank R 1981 (talk • contribs) .

Persistent page title
Hi Xaosflux. I have another question. A couple of days ago I edited a Wikipedia page and requested that it be moved to a previous title since the move feature is not available for previous page titles. In spite of being moved to a different title (which is correctly displayed on the article), Google Search still shows it with the old title. How can I completely get rid of it? The page in question is Lake Junin which, when a google search in english is done, still displays the name Chinchayqucha. Thanks in advance for any help. Frank R 1981 (talk) 16:44, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- Everything actually looks like it should; the page title is now at Lake Junin, but we left a redirect behind at Chinchayqucha in case anything was linked to it; google caches usually take a bit to update it should in time. — xaosflux Talk 17:07, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
Thank you Xaosflux. I feel relieved because I thought I messed up something. Well, I guess it's all in Google's hands now. ;) Frank R 1981 (talk) 17:15, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
Protecting the unprotected
Hello Xf,
I noticed that you protected the page User talk:Jimbo Wales/Unprotected. Protecting that page defeats its purpose, which is to allow folks an avenue to appeal to Jimbo, even when his regular talk page is semi-protected. His regular talk page is a valuable resource to the community IMHO but gets hit with lots of trolling from anons. But he likes to have a way for appeals to be made. Thus the idea of having an unprotected page. On the unprotected page, very little damage can be done, because it will simply be anons talking to Jimbo, or anons talking to anons. This was discussed in some detail at [2]
In any case, I'll request that you not protect that page, or at least be very careful and only protect it when absolutely needed. Let me know if I can be of any help.
Sincerely,
Smallbones(smalltalk) 05:26, 14 February 2016 (UTC)
- Smallbones I only protected this page from being moved away to another page, so that a vandal can't make it inaccessible. — xaosflux Talk 14:14, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi. I've reverted your edit, as it's a long-standing transclusion from the closure page to the AN page, and we keep the status quo. ENB
Hi,
I was just looking through the code/history of WP:ENB to figure out why it wasn't archiving and think that I found the issue. Here it looks like you archived some old ambassador applications by placing the archive top above the level-2 header (i.e. outside the application) and later manually archived here based on section headings rather than archive top. I actually have to run now, so can't look through it to figure out what that affected (I'm only operating under the presumption that's why it's not updating, i.e. a stray DoNotArchiveUntil or something). Could you take a look?
Thanks --Ryan (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:28, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
- User:Ryan (Wiki Ed) I think I got that noticeboard all cleaned up now, ran a large manual archiving, kicked the bot counter up, and closed out some old failed applications and archived them too. Will need to see if it resolves during next archive period. — xaosflux Talk 05:14, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
- Great. Thanks, by the way, for being one of the only people following up with the ambassador applications. Changing content models
Looking at the "shells" you created at WT:MMS I see that you changed the content model. The MediaWiki docs didn't help much... care to explain how this works and how you actually change it? I am very curious — MusikAnimal talk 21:46, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Ineeee/new article name here is a bit complicated. There was a NAC relisting (can non-admin relist discussions? I thought that a contentious discussion meant that an admin had to close it) that was reverted based on the lack of closure of the silly relisting RFCs at WT:MFD. I support deletion but I don't know how to resolve these MFDs. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 07:41, 17 March 2016 (UTC)
- Ricky81682 That one sure is messy - I added some post closing notes to the page, I'm sure they won't solve any NAC or RELIST issues - but are not intended to - just getting one more page off the backlog. For what it is worth, I disagree with the removal of the additional comments by the anon editor, and did use them in closing the discussion. — xaosflux Talk 12:53, 17 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi, in attempting to run WaybackMedic for the approved trial run, AWB aborts with a window "Captcha required, is the account user autoconfirmed etc?" I checked the bot's profile settings and the email was confirmed days ago. Manually editing a page works, no captcha required. Any idea? Page you deleted and then undeleted has been renominated
If you have time, could you look at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Cinteotl/stats? (The original MFD was Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Fearofreprisal/stats.)
I also am not sure if I should inform User:Cinteotl. Part of your reason for undeleting was apparently because I had not informed him. (Cinteotl gave it as a reason you should undelete, but the only reason you yourself gave was that the MFD had not been supported by anyone and was later contested.) I think (it was a long time ago) that my reason for not informing Cinteotl was that I believed informing him would constitute baiting him into violating his TBAN (I believed the creation of the page itself was a TBAN-violation -- I don't remember if anyone agreed with me). The TBAN is still in place, so I am not sure if he should be informed this time; ArbCom doubled down on his TBAN.
Any thoughts?

Request for administrative attention
Hi. Sorry to bother you with this out of the blue, but Slakr appears to be absent, I've bothered Mr. Stradivarius so much recently that it's probably starting to get annoying, and you've struck me (around the place) as being smart and reasonable (and technically inclined), so luckily for you ;-) here I am.
Would you consider taking a look at an ongoing problem that I already reported to WP:ANEW where Slakr responded in agreement that the editor was warring but no action was taken?
The editor reported is continuing to guard his version of Acetone peroxide against many other editor's wishes, and has taken to telling me to take deep breaths and calm down (which unsurprisingly pisses me off).
They're standing in the way of simple maintenance deletion of {{Multiple issues 2}} which they created to sidestep consensus and push ahead with changes they desire, currently being discussed derailed at {{Multiple issues}} (talk) - a discussion where again I am being told how I think and how I shouldn't.
I admit to being at the end of my tether and have unwatched all the related pages in this fiasco, for fear of overstepping my own personal line in the sand and saying something unacceptable. But because of this, the situations are likely not going to be resolved any time soon.
If you could please take a few minutes to review the situation as you find it, and if nothing else, fix the disagreeable use of {{Multiple issues 2}}
on Acetone peroxide in accordance with multiple editor's wishes, that'd be great. Then, if you feel so inclined, perhaps you could reinstate the speedy delete I placed on {{Multiple issues 2}}
(single use, substantial copy)?
Again, I realise this is out of the blue, and off the beaten track, but I've already taken the correct path, and fell flat on my face; Slakr may have agreed that the editor is warring, but with no follow up, it was ineffective. fredgandt 14:40, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Fred Gandt: Sooooo is this whole fiasco about whether or not an optional parameter should be added to Template:Multiple issues? As far as the use of the alt-template on an article until that gets resolved, I don't think it has any real impact on the project and can be ignored until the template issue is resolved - if it is at an impasse the questions on forking that template would be: is it hurting anything? — xaosflux Talk 15:43, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you for taking a look. No, it's not the end of the world, and the sky is not falling. Should the will of one editor be imposed on all opposition and by implication be supported? Technically, there's hardly a ripple on the waters, but as a matter of principle, great waves are smashing against a listing ship (yay for words). fredgandt 18:26, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
- My opinion is to update Template:Multiple issues to support the additional parameter, once the RfC is closed one way or the other - bring the new template to TfD - if the consensus is that the parameter is not appropriate, then working around consensus via a fork is bound to fail as well. — xaosflux Talk 18:58, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
- The discussion at Template talk:Multiple issues overall leans against allowing editors to change the main talk link, and in favour of instead, of allowing the abbreviated children to show their own. As such, at this time, adding the proposed parameter would be contrary to consensus. But in truth, no matter the result of that discussion (which as far as I'm concerned is neither here nor there. que sera), the editor is still not conceding to the wishes of multiple other editors in the article space. Anyhoo, never mind. These things are sent to try us. fredgandt 21:06, 6 April 2016 (UTC)

Extended Confirmed
My understanding is that the right is auto-promoted, but I don't seem to have it (even though I qualify). I don't see an "Edit" link on Gamergate controversy anymore. Is there something I need to do to activate the right?--Jorm (talk) 01:43, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
- Whoah. That was cool. I was promoted immediately upon saving the edit right above. This is an interesting MediaWiki bug but one I doubt will ever be fixed. --Jorm (talk) 02:05, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Jorm: I think it is more of a feature then a bug - the update to the new group only fires "on edit" otherwise it would kill the servers to have to check "on read". — xaosflux Talk 03:08, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
- The bug is that even though I had earned the promotion, it wasn't viable when I went to a protected page. The smart solution to the bug is to check on read when you first go to a page that has that level of protection.
- Also, it wouldn't kill the servers to do on read calculations in this case; it would only happen for logged in users, of which there are a very, very small percentage compared to the actual readership. In fact, all logged in users bypass the cache and are served freshly compiled PHP whenever they hit a page, and the calculation of their user rights could happen then.
- (For context, I served as the senior designer at the WMF for about five years and have a pretty solid understanding of MediaWiki internals).
- Anyways, it's small potatoes. Maybe I'll mention it to Ori and see what he says.--Jorm (talk) 03:28, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Robots.txt request
Hi, I think you've misunderstood my second request. Wikipedia:Abuse reports is already on the robots.txt exclusion, but the project was renamed to Wikipedia:Abuse response and there are several pages under the new name and several under the previous one. The situation is similar to long-term abuse, but the projects are separate. I think 4 separate new entries would need to be added to the robots.txt page as was done with long-term abuse due to stragglers. Thanks. Pteroinae alternate (talk) 05:21, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
