Can A7 apply to books? --Pontificalibus (talk) 18:53, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

You're right - it doesn't apply to books. I was trying to be nice and not accuse the author of intentional deception. I could have just deleted the page as G3-Blatant Hoax, it appears they were just using the "book" angle to write an article about the group (the text described the group & it's activities - not a book).. --Versageek 15:11, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
No worries, I just happened to be using this specific article to explain to a new editor what the different deletion templates are for, and what they're not for. I guess he got the idea anyway.--Pontificalibus (talk) 16:38, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Dear Versageek, I am preparing a publication and would like to use your photo of Rockfish Gap (shown on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockfish_Gap. It is for a booklet for the Boonesborough Foundation, a nonprofit group. Harry G. Enoch, Winchester, KY

External links

Hello !

I'm new here and I'm having trouble translating the page I created about Robert Paturel on the French wikipedia. I've been told I needed references and I completely agree with that, unfortunately my adddition of external links has been reverted. I know this an automatic procedure to avoid stupid auto-promotion but as I am writiing about a boxer who is -thank God- still living and was famous before the internet had every written line available, it makes it hard for me to prove who he is and what he has done.

I've completed his filmography and bibliography which can be verified though.

Can you help me please ? --Dontstepback (talk) 12:49, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

External links aren't a necessary element of a Wikipedia article. The link you added does not add anything of value to the existing content of the page. In addition, you were using a URL shortening service to add a link to a site which is on the spam blacklist - and finally, all of the links you attempted to add were to articles on hubpages.com which were written by the same author - this suggests a conflict of interest. --Versageek 20:34, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Is this a job for X-Link bot?

Hi. :) There's a discussion about a racist link at ANI (211.19.56.224 adding link to racist site w/ illegal info). I'm not sure if X-Link bot should be deployed for something like this due to my general cluelessness about bots and their resource demands. :) The page will never be appropriate for linkage, as it is encouraging racial discrimination. The link has not been added in some time, but that may be because it was only just removed; the article has since I started looking about for alternatives been semi-protected for a year to prevent its restoration. If this is the only concern, keeping the site off would obviously be a better solution. (It has been placed only by IP.) Your input there would be much appreciated! --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:10, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

I've blacklisted the domain. If the link is never acceptable, blacklisting is usually the better option. --Versageek 15:37, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

In my time on this project I've come to understand that what any given individual believes to be the truth depends greatly on their point of view - which is why we have a policy on maintaining a neutral point of view in articles. If you can provide reliable sources which support your particular point of view or refute portions of the existing article which you believe to be inaccurate , please discuss the changes you wish to make to the article on the article's talk/discussion page. --Versageek 18:00, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

UEG

hello! thank you for comments. I am trying to create UEG article in wikipedia. This is very interesting project created by two Polish designers Ania Kuczynska and Michal Lojewski. There is not much background about UEG on the web right now. UEG has got own site and store. However there are few links to blogs where we can find informations about UEG and that people recommend this project. This is not only fashion project but there is a special manifest, according to this manifest designers create their vision and use totally new materials. I wanted to edit article and add more links and sources.hope this convince you to importance of UEG.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Mounawhitecat5 (talkcontribs)

Generally projects such as this one need to have first gained widespread media attention/publicity before they are eligible for an article on Wikipedia. I see that Michal Lojewski already has an article, it might be better to improve the article about him and include a mention of this project on that page. Please review our guidelines on notability --Versageek 20:27, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Direct links to Amazon.com in this context are discouraged. That is why the cite template includes a link to Special:BookSources based on the ISBN. --Versageek 19:57, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

Submission of "Skinnyfat the movie"

Greetings! I recently submitted a page for "Skinnyfat the movie" and it was flagged and deleted for: G11. Unambiguous advertising or promotion.

I was wondering if you could explain how the movie could be submitted without being flagged as it included a summary of the movie with the list of cast, crew, etc just like many other Wikipedia pages about movies.

NinaGreen

I have been having a discussion with MuZemike on his talk page, and I should like to share my concern with you about the "sockpuppetry" tag added at the NinaGreen user page. Of the two "confirmed sockpuppets", the User:NotRecommended account has made only one edit, creating a user page, so that account does not seem to me to meet the definition of a sockpuppet; while it seems that little more than a shared IP address (which MuZemike says rather vaguely "does not look like a public IP") connects User:TurquoiseMountain to NinaGreen. MuZemike says "there is a justifiable cause that the accounts were created to evade the ban". I do not know what a "justifiable cause" is, but in any event, to declare NinaGreen guilty of sockpuppetry without her having been given any right of reply to any complaint strikes me as an unhappy way for Wikipedia to carry on. May I also ask how CheckUser became involved in the matter? To justify such a use of computer records, surely someone needs to invoke a due process of some kind for the action to be justified? Moonraker2 (talk) 05:08, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

Versageek, please see my update of ARBSAQ here. I removed the threaded discussion from the case page after talking with AGK, one of the clerks. The thread included some comments by you. It should be simple for anyone to copy the thread to a new venue if Moonraker2 believes that there was not enough evidence for blocking the alleged socks. EdJohnston (talk) 16:04, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks Ed. --Versageek 16:59, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

Moonraker2: The checkuser policy explains the accepted uses of the checkuser tool. I was operating within those accepted uses when I discovered these accounts. I wasn't specifically looking for them. The user involved may refute the sockpuppet findings either by posting to their own talk page or emailing ArbCom. --Versageek 16:59, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for that, but as an admin you must surely be answerable for your own action in imposing a further sanction on NinaGreen, which I gather is based entirely on the CheckUser findings, which it seems are "likely" to be correct. As I said on the ArbCom page, without receiving any reply, "likely" is entirely different from "confirmed", which is the word now used on the User:NinaGreen page in "confirmed sockpuppets", and, indeed, "sleeper" is not the same as "sockpuppet"; so in the case of User:NotRecommended, would you not agree that a 'likely sleeper' has been converted into a "confirmed sockpuppet" without any rational explanation, while in the case of User:TurquoiseMountain the accused is found guilty of "sockpuppetry" without any chance to be heard and on what looks like a subjective judgement of the "balance of probabilities"? I have no contact with Nina Green and no knowledge of the facts of this matter apart from what is public on Wikipedia, but I believe I have raised reasonable questions and I'd be grateful for an answer. Moonraker2 (talk) 21:32, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
I understand and even share your concern about use of the word "confirmed" when all that is possible is "the subjective judgement of the balance of probabilities". This is just how the sockpuppet investigation mechanism on Wikipedia works - if you don't believe me, spend some time watching the WP:SPI page. --Versageek 06:10, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

Ronn Torossian

You left a message on my talk page about a lack of attribution of criticisms in a BLP. The criticisms were attributed to the New York Times, the Forward (considered a reliable newspaper), The Atlantic, the Haaretz newspaper, and Ad Age. One quote was attributed to Herbert Nolan, a writer on the Gawker website. I would not consider Gawker to be a reliable source for information, even though it is highly respected within the PR community. However, I did not rely on that source for information, but only quoted Nolan's opinion. Nolan himself is well-known and a respected media critic.

The anonymous editor 108.21.128.55, in the article 5W Public Relations has used an interesting tactic - he has removed all the footnotes from the section critical of 5WPR, so that he can now contend that the information is unsourced and removed it. I am wondering if he used the same trick at Ronn Torossian.

If you still feel that my last version contained criticisms that were not adequately attributed, please advise me which. Otherwise, I plan to restore that version. Thanks, --Ravpapa (talk) 20:20, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

The IP certainly made a mess of things, but the portions I have issue with aren't specifically criticism and exist in your version as well. In particular the statement in the lede that the subject is "a leading American supporter of Israel's right-wing.", and the first paragraph of the "Activities and opinions" section. Neither of these have sources and they really need sources if they are to remain in the article. --Versageek 21:18, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
I understand your concern. I can attribute the statement in the lead to the Forward article, and can attribute the "Activities and opinions" information to a variety of sources, all of them reliable.
I agree we have to take a conservative approach to this biography. On the other hand, I feel that an important aspect of his notability is his embrace of right-wing causes. His name pops up again and again as spokesman for right-wing politicians and parties in Israel; he has written op-ed pieces for Arutz Sheva, the leading mouthpiece of the settlers' movement in Israel; he has been active in Amcha-CJC, an American Jewish organization that has lobbied against the Palestinian Authority and demonstrated against Islamic groups in the US.
I also think we need to include some criticism. Torossian stirs up a lot of it, and to ignore it is a distortion of the same type (though, perhaps, not to the same extent) as the puffery that our friend the sock has been pushing.
I would appreciate your opinion on this before proceeding. --Ravpapa (talk) 06:55, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

Probably the most significant problem with an article about this company is that I can find absolutely no independent reliable sources which even acknowledge that the company exists. There is no news coverage (local, national or international), no magazine articles, nothing at all except what appears to be a very thin/new web presence containing material put on the web by "the company" itself. Assuming you can find resources I can't, you need to explain in the article how the company meets the guidelines for inclusion. Those points need to be supported by references from reliable sources. --Versageek 22:35, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

I noticed that you recently removed some vandalism from the quill corporation article. A user vandalized two links (facebook and twitter) as well as created a reference to: http://responsiblemarketing.com/blog/2008/10/23/the-door-to-door-salesman-from-hell/comment-page-2#comment-10903

This is a slanderous website that is not relevant to Quill.com's products, services, or history.

I took the time to remove the links as well as updated the history and background to accurately reflect Quill. Unlike you, I am not terribly adept at Wikipedia. Is it possible you can request a semi-protection of this page to avoid further vandalism? If not, could you walk me through the process?

Thank you for your consideration.

Aughrim Rugby Deletion

Versageek,

You deleted by new page regarding Aughrim Rugby Club, Ireland's newest rugby club. All of our neighbouring rugby clubs are listed on Wiki. I also added reference to 3rd party articles. Can you re establish the page and I will add further reference to my article. I am new to Wiki and only finding my feet in terms of editing and how to go about it. Any help would be very welcome?

I've moved the page into your userspace, you may find it here: User:Dmcallister/Aughrim Rugby. It's highly unlikely that a new organization such as your club will meet our guidelines for inclusion so soon after it was founded, thus there is a chance that the page may get deleted again when you move it back into the main article space. --Versageek 10:35, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Griffith R. Harsh

I was wondering about your recent deletion of Griffith R. Harsh on an A7 basis. While I agree with the outcome, as in my opinion it was copyvio, I was wondering if you could provide some feedback on the A7 issue. Specifically I would think both being the spouse of such a prominent person, and his success in medicine would pass the very low threshold to survive A7. And again, I'm just looking for feedback on the issue, not asking that you actually change anything regarding the deletion. Thanks, Monty845 05:26, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

Could have gone either way.. being married to a famous person isn't really a claim of notability (although it might merit a redirect to the article of the famous person) , nor is having a lot of education (we'd be swamped with articles about doctors and academics if it were!). The first version wasn't 100% copyvio (according to the duplication report), although certainly enough of it was to qualify for deletion under that criteria. The second version; which I also deleted, was 100% copyvio. --Versageek 21:44, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

Sistersville, WV Page

Hi Versageek!

I have spent the last week or so supplying Historic information for the Sistersville, WV page. My sources included: Marietta College in Ohio, WV Encyclopedia, City-Date and other Wikipedia pages. Today I added a couple of external links, including an article in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that was addressing the revitalization aspect of the dwindling small town. I guess this link set off the bot that wiped out all my work. I see the link as falling very much within the guidelines of acceptable usage on Wikipedia and all the information I provided was relevant to general information about Sistersville.

I have no personal commercial interest in Sistersville, I don't even live there; but I was recently researching the place and found a dearth of information on Wikipedia. I thought I would share the fruit of my research and now it's all been wiped out.

I can see no foundation for this, and I would appreciate some response and, hopefully, the restoration of the material I created.

Thank you for any help you can offer!

Samantha

Lifesavorunltd (talk) 20:06, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

I reverted the bot. blogspot.com links are generally not acceptable unless it is an official blog belonging to the subject of the article. This is why the bot reverted. We've determined by experience that reverting only a single edit usually leaves a mess of broken formatting - so the bot reverts all of the recent edits by a user rather than just the one which added the link, which is why the rest of the material you added was removed. You may revert the bot on your own if you feel it was incorrect. It won't revert again until someone other than you edits the page.

Terrafermat

It looks like the account Terrafermat is involved in the ongoing vandalism campaign on my user talk page, and you blocked the account accordingly. But you flagged the account as vandalism-only, and it clearly isn't that - unlike the others.

My guess is that either Terrafermat is the sock master behind this, or that Terrafermat's account has been compromised. In any event, I just noticed this and thought it helpful to mention. :-)--Jimbo Wales (talk) 01:39, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

"Both parties refuse to communicate" on Kayastha?

Greetings, why does the block on Kayastha say "Both parties refuse to communicate"? I've been leaving clear Edit Summaries and vw warnings for the IP who's jumping on the article, and I have explained the changes I've made both on the Talk page and at WP:WikiProject India. How am I failing to communicate with an IP who does not respond on his talk page, leaves no comments on Talk:Kayastha, and gives no edit summary? MatthewVanitas (talk) 19:47, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Actually, I didn't consider you as one of the parties.... I probably should have just labeled it vandalism - the IP clearly thinks he's 100% correct & everyone else is 100% wrong. :( . I just hate to do that when the subject is religion. --Versageek 19:58, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
No worries, just making sure I wasn't somehow also a guilty party. For context, we've been having these issues come up on more than a dozen Indian caste articles recently. Long/short, there are a bunch of castes which self-identify as Kshatriya (warrior) caste, with an illustrious history descended from gods, etc. However, in 90% of cases the actual academic histories list them as Shudra (cultivator) caste, noting that in the early 20th century under the British a lot of the lower castes who'd rise in wealth and power started demanding a "review" of history, new genealogies, etc. to "prove" that they were ancient warriors descended from the god Ram, etc. I've been going into those articles, and aiming for an even-handed "the caste was historically Shudra in the Brahmanical system, but self-identifies as Kshatriya and has been politically agitating for such since 1924", etc. Of course, that's like waving a red flag in front of a bull, so no matter how heavily I cite to eminently reliable sources, I get enraged IPs and single-use accounts coming to wipe any mention of Shudra background, remove any historical images, insert info about how they just coincidentally happen to be farming these days due to a shortage of wars to be warriors in, etc. I'm getting pretty close to asking protection on Kurmi, Kunbi, Lodhi, Yadav, Ahir, and other such articles where I've essentially converted them from "for this caste" to "about this caste". Probably more than you needed to know, but thought you might be interested in this sudden influx of riled-up editors on India issues. MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:16, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Changes or External Links

Greetings:

I have followed a trail to your address here from the West Lafayette High School Page created in Wikipedia. I am new to this system and did not really understand tghe "editing" feature, but I rerad and tried to make an addition to relevant information for the Page.

The link I created is an to an "Alumni" site I administer. Something called a "bot" reverted my change, and I went looking for information and read that an automatic "bot" will revert additions on occassions. Fearing I did something a-miss, I re-did my addition trying to be even more careful and it seems to work okay now.

I wanted to check with you (I am told the owner of the "bot") to see if what the protocol is to make these changes. I hope you will forgive my blunders if I have made them and illuminate me as to where to send requests for changes in the future.

There are several links in the External Links section which lead to web pages realted to the High School, but the Web Site itself is not functioning or up to date, many broken links with outdated and incorrect information, and I can get no one to return my emails of inquiry. I am assuming that the WLHS Web Site was created by someone who no longer supports it. Can you check this out and revise the links to a current West Lafayette School Corporation Web site maintained by the Technology Department at WLSC.

Angelina Elander

Greetings.

I started to create an article about myself for Wikipedia, as a work in progress, but you deleted it because it was about "a real person with no significance". Well, how can you know this? If you google my name a lot of pages show up that have a major significance to me and to people who know me and other people who wants to get to know me, and therefore I thought it would be the appropriate thing to do, to create a Wikipedia page about me too, to get a more clearer picture of who I am, and as I wrote in my earlier complaint about speedy deletion, it would be very important to stop all the rumours. The article was not ready however, but I'm planning to continue writing on it, and insist upon myself, so I hope we can all just get along and not be too snotty about it, ok?

Best regards Angelina Elander

Hello, I posted a page for OrderZone.com, which you deleted based on the criteria A7. I revised the page then requested a review, after which I made another round of revisions based on suggestions by Crisco 1492 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_feedback/2011_June_6#User:Draykyle.2FOrderzone.com). The revised page is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Draykyle/Orderzone.com. Do you give rulings on things like this? Should I ask for another review? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Draykyle (talkcontribs) 20:55, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

No one individual here can really make "rulings", but I think the article is ready for main space, so I've moved it for you. It's now at Orderzone.com. That doesn't guarantee that someone else won't nominate it for deletion again, but it doesn't appear to qualify for 'speedy deletion' as it did before. --Versageek 17:41, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Holly Bobo

Why was her account deleted? Its a major missing persons case on going right now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 156.101.1.5 (talk) 08:08, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

Lauren Spierer

Versageek, I saw you recent deletion of Lauren Spierer. I wonder what your thoughts are about the relative notability of Disappearance of Susan Powell, Disappearance of Kyron Horman, Disappearance of Edward and Austin Bryant, Disappearance of Claudia Lawrence, Disappearance of Madeleine McCann, and Disappearance of Maura Murray. Perhaps Disappearance of Lauren Spierer would be more appropriate for inclusion? Thanks. Jweiss11 (talk) 19:26, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Except in cases where the incident drove a change in public policy or created an International incident, I don't think we should have articles about them. There are hundreds of thousands of missing persons in the US alone, with >80,000 of them considered to be "endangered or involuntary".[1]. If I were inclined to nominate articles for deletion, from your list above - I'd nominate the articles on Powell, Horman, Lawrence & the Bryant boys for deletion. At this point in time, I'd also be inclined to nominate any article on "The Disappearance of" Spierer or Holly Bobo for deletion.. I understand people want to get the word out to look for these people, but this isn't the place to do it. That said, I'm a bit tied up IRL to get involved with a bunch of deletion debates at the moment, and any article titled "Disappearance of" with sufficient media references would certainly need to go via AfD rather than speedy deletion.. --Versageek 20:44, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. The Spierer case has certainly drawn a lot of national news coverage. It seems similar to the Maura Murray case and at least as notable, though the situation is much newer and less developed. Jweiss11 (talk) 23:21, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
Murray's page suggests that the case was cited in the successful efforts to establish a "cold case unit" in New Hampshire. That marginally meets my "change in public policy" criteria.. --Versageek 23:50, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Decline on trophic dynamics delete

Hi Versageek - please allow the deletion to go through. I am an ecologist and doing a major revision on food webs. Trophic dynamics does not deserve its own page. I integrated the material into food webs and will create a new page called trophic - that will be a fork from the main food web page. I was the primary on ecology since 2008 and there is little action or discussion on these pages anyway. The pages and linkages through these ecology related pages are in terrible shape, so it would be better to just to let things go through to get things shaking a bit - like cutting a lawn to stimulate regeneration. The one person who has entered into the discussion on the food chain (soon to be food web) talk pages has agreed with these changes. The deletion makes logical sense - I have read the original peer-reviewed works on trophic dynamics - from its origins through history. It is nothing more than food webs - trophic=feeding, dynamic=moving, i.e., food web linkages are feeding linkages and the arrows show the dynamics.Thompsma (talk) 02:32, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Okay...I think you just kept it as a re-direct, which would be fine. However, some of us (myself and one other) are wanting to move food chain to food web. Food chains are contained in food webs. I'll put a food chain sub-section together and subsequently fork it to a longer article on food-chain length.Thompsma (talk) 02:36, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
If you can get consensus for the move on Talk:Food chain, I'll be happy to make the page move for you. Deletion of the redirect from Food web -> Food chain that is in place now would be part of that move and needn't take place in advance. --Versageek 02:47, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
The problem isn't about getting consensus - it is about getting a mass of people to go the page. Take a look at the activity rate on that page - things move very slowly, so I would prefer that you just allowed it to go through. There really is no reason to keep the name food chain - it is a technical term and the one person who opposed the change in 2008 didn't know what it meant. Food chain links are contained in food webs. I have made an honest effort to maintain the cited works of others and will diligently reformat their citations to a consistent format. In addition, I have been reading through the cited material to check to see if it says what was posted on wikipedia.Thompsma (talk) 02:52, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Ok, I moved it. Hopefully I explained sufficiently in my comments about why it was moved that no one will revert me. --Versageek 03:11, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Thanks Versageek!!! I'm sure it will be fine - it is my goal to get ecology, its portal, and its forks all into good article status. It might even be fine to just keep food web with a food chain sub-heading, but I'll leave that to the discussion page in time. First, the food web needs to be fixed and then the nested topic of food chain can be addressed.Thompsma (talk) 03:22, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Help with ecological recycling move and delete

Hi Versageek...hoping you could give me a hand. I recently wrote recycling (ecological) and decided it should be called nutrient cycle - which links to biogeochemical cycles. I will put a small paragraph in biogeochemical cycles that links to nutrient cycle (currently titled as recycling (ecological). Nutrient cycle is a special kind of biogeochemical cycle as it relates to agriculture. It is also called ecological recycling, organic cycling, bio-cycling, and so on...but after reading through the history and writing the page I started to get a better grasp of the topic. Nutrient cycle is the correct title. Could you assist with the moves/deletions?Thompsma (talk) 06:02, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

I've moved the page. As always, there is a chance that someone might undo the move.. then it would need to be discussed (as per WP:BRD). --Versageek 16:45, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the help. It is a tough one - nobody actually writes about a distinction between the terms nutrient cycle and biogeochemical cycle. However, this paper: Bormann, F. H.; Likens, G. E.. Nutrient cycling. 155. pp. 424-429. doi:10.1126/science.155.3761.424.[2] - kinda points to the distinction by defining nutrient cycling within the ecosystem and the lateral exchange of matter into the larger biogeochemical cycles. However, not everyone makes this distinction so clear. The terms are used so interchangeably in the literature it is hard to tell if there is a difference. I've gone through the history and other than the demarcation in 1926 where Vernadsky coined the term biogeochemistry - the two ideas are like an ecotone and blend into each other. I don't know when the tern nutrient cycle was first used - still trying to hunt that one down. In 1900 I can find a paper on the septic tank where they talk about the scum forming an inexhaustible supply of nutrients and later mention how bacteria cycle the particles, but nutrient cycle is not used in conjunction.(The Bacterial Purification Of Sewage. II. The Septic Tank

Source: The British Medical Journal, Vol. 1, No. 2037 (Jan. 13, 1900), pp. 83-86). I also have a snippet view of this paper in 1899 that uses 'nutrient cycle' [3] - and this may be the first occurrence. It seems to me that nutrient cycling does deserve its own page - because it refers more specifically to agricultural ecosystems, such as Ecological Recycling Agriculture.[4] The ecology related pages are touched so infrequently - I doubt anyone will complain. If they do - I will address it in the talk pages. I spent a long time on ecology and was reluctant to spread out - but now I am working on the sub-articles and finding that they are in complete disarray. Very few people are working in Wikipedia in this area - which seems surprising to me.Thompsma (talk) 21:24, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

"Nonprofit organization" page

This concerns the article "Nonprofit organization." I added the post "privately owned" and "private owners" to its talk page, and I'm not sure how to proceed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Nonprofit_organization

I believe that the important first paragraph in the main body of the article is in need of clarification. It is in "Nonprofit distinction," and starts "Ownership is the quantitative difference between for- and not-for-profit organizations..."

I don't know how Wikipedia works. Will someone automatically look at my post, or should I bring it to someone's attention. There did not seem to be anyone obvious except perhaps you, and you may just be concerned with removing crap.

I have an uncomfortable suspicion that the surest way to get attention is to simply edit the article to reflect what I believe the article is really saying. I find this an extremely uncomfortable option because although I am quite sure that my interpretation of the article is correct, I am aware that I could be wrong.

Can you give me some advice on what to do? Thank you for your trouble.

P.S. I don't know why the article says "quantitative difference." I would have said "qualitative difference."

Maher-shalal-hashbaz and CSD tags

Hi Versageek! This is just to let you know about a request from Singularity42 (talk · contribs), who created Maher-shalal-hashbaz and CSD tags, which you speedy deleted. They have asked that the content be retrieved from deletion and placed as a new section on WP:DRN. TIMWE is the largest mobile transaction network in the emerging markets (Latin America, Middle East & Africa in Particular). It is one of the few companies in the world which works directly with the carriers in more than 30 countries, by maintaining their on-deck portals. It's bigger than their competitors like mBlox, Mauj, Tanla and so on. Moreover, it is one of the few portuguese multi-nationals in the world in the tech/telecom space. I presume a company with hundreds of millions in revenues deserves a space in Wikipedia. On top, the company is going to NASDAQ. ALso the A7 clearly says it can remain, if the claim of significance or importance given is not credible.

weight loss

Hey , I tried to edit and put my point across in the weight loss page of Wikipedia . But you reported me for disruptive editing . I just mentioned that a product helps in weight loss because I myself have used it and have seen the benefits and want to help people . This is what I typed "One of the weight loss products manufactured from a plant called Caralluma Fimbriata , has been shown to successfully help individuals to lose weight ." How exactly is this disruptive editing ?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Striker316 (talkcontribs) 20:34, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

It is both original research and promotion of the product (even if that was not your intent). If you can provide references from reliable sources that state the scientifically proven benefits of the product, it might be acceptable to mention it in the article, but it would be best to ask on the article talk page first. --Versageek 20:45, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi Versageek,

Thanks for your recommendation. My sincere apologies for proposing an incorrect method of improving/deleting the page. I did my best to copy the outline from other pages on the AfD but I wanted to be sure I did it correctly. Would you mind taking a second look for me? I'm still a bit new to the site. For some reason the page did not come up on today's AfDs as you can see here. Not sure why.

XLinkBot - Welcoming new users?

Hi Versageek, I just figured I'd sent you a note letting you know XLinkBot is welcoming new users. I do not know if that was your intent, or if it is a result of calling upon scripts (similar to what Twinkle uses) that defaults to putting a welcome message before a notice. I figure, unless it's a damn smart bot, it might not be of the most help if a new user decides to ask it a question. Best, ROBERTMFROMLI | TK/CN 16:42, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

We try to be super-friendly to new users after we've reverted their contributions, this includes placing a welcome message along with our warning about external link addition. Beetstra, myself and a few other users do monitor XLinkBot's talk page and respond to any queries that users (new or otherwise) may post there. --Versageek 17:45, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi again. I definitely agree with the trying to be friendly part... just wasn't sure if it was by design and known (and thus monitored) - or not. Thanks for the answer! Best, Rob ROBERTMFROMLI | TK/CN 18:12, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Checking the history

Hi, You deleted this userpage as an attack page. However, it had actually been vandalized, and I was just in the process of removing the speedy. Would you mind restoring the two edits by the user? Reaper Eternal (talk) 18:55, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Actually, I did look at the history. I would have deleted it as G11 had it not been vandalized. He's using his userpage to promote himself via a fake article. I see you've restored it, that's fine - I'll tag it as a userpage. When I'm making deletion decisions I try to be consistent in my handling of fake articles on user pages, so as not to be accused of bias about letting some stand & deleting others.

Vandalist

Your bot account, XLinkBot, reverted some edits on Oral history by TSVP for vandalism, but TSVP redid these edits. Since I don't know the warning templates, can you take action on this matter. Jab7842 (talk) 21:51, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Am a fairly new user .. not sure why the bot reverted my edits

Hello .. I tried to make a change to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Canadian_tornadoes_and_tornado_outbreaks on the section for Aug 21, 2011 Goderich Tornado .. I have added videos before of my own tornado sightings to Wikipedia with succcess (June 22, 2008 - St Marys, Bryanston Tornado) & now wonder what the problem is. I live close to the Goderich & have viewed the many YouTube vids & am trying to include the most informative & illustrative ones into the Wikipedia page.

Here is the section containing the new edits with the 3 videos I tried to add:

  • August 21, An F3 tornado touched down in Goderich, Ontario. In the late afternoon, a supercell storm formed video and intensified over Lake Huron, spawning a waterspout which came ashore and passed directly through the heart Goderich. At its widest over downtown, the tornado was estimated to be 1.5 km across, and its path was an estimated 20 km long. It caused devastating damage to the town's port and historic downtown center, video, as well as to several blocks of residential homes. Approximately forty people were injured and one person was killed by the tornado, before it moved on, across the adjacent rural area video, Ontario's strongest since 1996.

Can you tell me why it won't accept my edits?

Thanks .. much appreciated .. Rob

I checked the incidents page, and did not see this article being discussed. I did not get the info from promotional material, I got it from an IBM Redbook (which is like user/architecture guide). Can you help me with what I need to do to improve this article? Claiming to be a Wikipedian of any sort is not considered an assertion of notability on English Wikipedia. You are welcome to take the case to WP:DRV. --Versageek 01:24, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Did you read talk page on that article? (which just got deleted by another admin but i believe you can still see it you want too since you are an admin too) I have provided enough information to prove the notability of that person. Again he is not just an ordinary Wikipedian like others. He is a co-founder of Vietnamese Wikipedia. Did you even bother to read the article content before delete it? If you say a founder of wikipedia is not notable then you can as well delete Jimmy Wales article. Or you think founder of English Wikipedia is better than founder of Vietnamese Wikipedia?Trongphu (talk) 01:56, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

I did read the talk page. Jimbo Wales founded the entire Wikipedia infrastructure, there is a huge difference between that and being one of the initial editors of a particular language version of Wikipedia. --Versageek 02:04, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
Initial editor? There is a huge difference between initial editor and the founder. You think you can just start out a new version language wikipedia as an editor right the way? There are a lot of development. Translated rules and developed our own rule. Someone has to build the typing keyboard (we have a different system of words) and many more steps which i don't know about details. It doesn't come from nowhere, someone has to build it! The founder of Vietnamese Wikipedia means as much to Vietnamese people as Jimmy Wales. This person plays a more significant role in Vietnamese Wikipedia than Jimmy Wales as obvious.Trongphu (talk) 02:18, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Spirulina (dietary supplement)

Hi there! I wanted to point out an error in a reference you used for Spirulina (dietary supplement). The study you're referring to applies to AFA (especially when grown in the wild), but not Spirulina. The reference states:

Spirulina is a form of cyanobacterium, some of which are known to produce toxins such as microcystins, BMAA, and others. Currently, no standard exists to regulate the safety of spirulina.[1]

Spirulina does not apply to the description "some of which". While it is true that AFA, microcystis, and spirulina are all types of cyanobacterium, spirulina has never been shown to cohabitate with microcystis (which produce microcystins) simply because these cyanobacterium thrive in very different conditions. Here's the reason why: AFA and microcystis both grow at a similar pH (between 8-9) whereas spirulina, when ready for harvest, is thriving at a pH between 10 - 11. These are a vastly different conditions which both spirulina and microcystis grow. Even if microcystis were introduced to an open-air spirulina culture, they would die within minutes because of the extremophile environment spirulina has naturally adapted to. As a algae grower myself, this was a deciding factor for me to raise spirulina -- very few forms of life, save scenedesmus, can grow alongside spirulina. Your reference however, would be appropriate to naturally grown AFA blue-green algae. Here is supporting documentation.

Jukka-Pekka Mattila

Good morning sir. You have reverted my edits and the recent "undo" of additions and edits carried out by user "Tutkinnanjohtaja" (=head of the police investigation in Finnish. This user is clearly defending Finnish government and carries on systematic defamation of the character of Jukka-Pekka Mattila, a living person. The same user is adding links to newspaper articles originating from the Finnish police department and other government linked entities. The Finnish government has been already convicted of their human rights violations regarding Mr. Mattila. Now they are using Wikipedia in addition to tabloid press to continue protecting their bias view points and further tarnish the reputation of Mr. Mattila. Wikipedia is not meant for personal campaign or medium for slander. I urge you to focus your efforts to discipline the user "Tutkinnanjohtaja" who is clearly misusing Wikipedia in a serious manner. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Barrister568 (talkcontribs) 07:35, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

I understand there is no need for regular editors to edit it, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be denied access. Just pointing that out, incase you want to unprotect it. LikeLakers2 (talk | Sign my guestbook!) 17:49, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

Also, I am thinking of editing User:XLinkBot/UserWhitelist to fix the spelling error ("Ever" on line 2 -> "Every"), but I am not sure if I should, because I don't want to break the bot. Does the bot always ignore all lines beginning with a # on all of its settings pages? LikeLakers2 (talk | Sign my guestbook!) 17:53, 18 October 2011 (UTC)
I fixed the typo. # at the start of a line indicates a comment (usually intended to make the page understandable for human readers), the bot doesn't attempt to use what follows the # as a setting. I'll consider changing the protection on XLinkBot's user page to autoconfirmed. However, it is the documentation page for XLinkBot and as such, there isn't really a need for anyone other than Beetstra & I to change it. --Versageek 18:14, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

Hey Versageek. Per your advice, I got in touch with Beetstra and he suggested we just go for a test with the bot. I just updated the settings with our new randomized template delivery system, as well as tweaks to the level 0 messages to fit our writing style. I left Beetstra an update, but just in case, if you see any weirdness or extra complaints, let me know or just revert the test. Thanks, Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 05:23, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Just a heads up that we have been continuing to tweak the configuration of the test with Beetstra, and that we also implemented a randomized test of the welcome templates, since they often are large enough to push the warnings out of immediate view (without scrolling). A good example page for what it all looks like when you get the new stuff as an IP: User talk:68.186.162.17. Let me know if you have any thoughts, or just edit the config of course. alt.support.stop-smoking

USENET group alt.support.stop-smoking (AS3) has experienced dramatic decline in new quitters over the past few years due to the increasing inaccessibility of USENET as it has been dropped by many ISPs. The community is migrating to the web in order to address this problem. Currently AS3 is mentioned in the wiki under smoking cessation, however you removed a link to the group's new home last night. I have reversed this edit, as we feel any mention of our group requires an update to access information. AS3 is one of the oldest and most successful stop smoking communities on the internet. It is a non commercial community for support, not a location in cyberspace. I do not understand why the edit was made, but hope you will respect the evolution of this group as we continue our mission to help smokers quit, and leave the link in place. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.79.77.8 (talk) 16:31, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

(2)My credibility is strong - I am a retired news reporter who writes to professional, ethical standards. In my career I was trusted to report on important public issues. My professional credentials in news journalism should qualify me as a Wiki "authority" on something that I have experienced first-hand.

(3)Personal, first-hand information on the subject of brain aneurysms is highly valued across the Internet because reader-friendly, authoritative information on this life-or-death medical event is rare and obscure. People interested in this topic are typically desperate for believable - and, yes, subjective - first-hand accounts relevant to their own life-or-death experience. "Survivor" communities ["Survivor" - the term used amongst amongst the population of persons who have experienced a brain aneurysm and have gone under the knife in surgery] on the Internet eagerly keep watch every day for new testimonials. Such information is used by readers as support in their time of confusion, pain and crisis.

(4)Formal clinical sources on the subject of brain aneurysms (Mayo.com, Johns Hopkins.com etc. etc.) virtually never offer complete, eyes-wide-open prognoses or detailed true-life post-op histories of survivors of this injury - something that can only be understood by reference to real-life experiences of survivors like myself - because, put simply, medical science does not have a high success rate for this particular surgery. Brain scientists close ranks and self-censor, wrapping a self-protective cloak of silence around their science/art.

(5)"Brain Aneurysm" is a subheading falling under the larger heading of "Mental Health," an area that even to this day still is shrouded in a degree of mystery and taboo (largely because brain science is not yet an exact science - it's as much "art" as science). Survivors are at a distinct, maddening disadvantage when trying to find full information about their injury. My personal account should be offered to Wiki readers to offset this censorship. Think of my site as existing in an epistemological branch of investigation similar to that now widely accepted amongst historiographers, "oral history." You'd be doing a big favour to desperate, confused injured persons by offering the link that I added.

Thank-you,

Queries

Hi Versageek. I was wondering about issues re your good self:

  • Communicating with IPs: I note that you do your fair share of warnings in general. However, there are many occasions where it seems you revert an edit, but don't give a reason in the wp:ES - and frequently the IP's Talk page remains empty - no welcome or hints. Mind if I ask why you don't talk to them?
  • This talk page is getting long, wouldn't you say?

Cheers, Trafford09 (talk) 12:20, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

I like to think of it is "first one if free" - If an IP just adds one inappropriate link to a single article or does simple vandalism to a single article, there isn't much point in issuing a warning - since it's unlikely the person behind the edit will see it.. and it may confuse a future editor on the same IP. If the IPs are editing regularly or make similar non-constructive edits to multiple articles I do usually issue a warning. --Versageek 15:58, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I guess that explains the (talk) to (talk) ratio on recent mainspace edits. Trafford09 (talk) 17:48, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

The external link (Commission Breakthrough spamming)

I do feel that it should be able to be added to the article mostly because of the fact that it has all the information that someone would need to find out how to help with the aging process wrinkles, dark circles, etc. What i don't understand is why it would be considered spam or advertisement. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Markprieto1987 (talkcontribs) 21:49, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Please read our External Links guidelines, and our Reliable sources guidelines. --Versageek 21:55, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
Some acceptable links include those that contain further research that is accurate and on-topic, information that could not be added to the article for reasons such as copyright or amount of detail, or other meaningful, relevant content that is not suitable for inclusion in an article for reasons unrelated to its accuracy. that is from the external link page itself and i feel that the link that i added has this type of information on it. Also isn't wikipedia a place where people can voice their opinions on different subjects such as this one i mean my opinion is that this website has some valid points to make and i feel like people will be able to use this information to there advantage so? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Markprieto1987 (talkcontribs) 22:06, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Live Online Chat

Hi, Sorry for leaving the link 18. liveonlinechat.net.

The article in question already had a link to chat.org which is not a moderated chat site. Live Online Chat is a fully moderated chat site and after reading some of the articles on Wikipedia about the dangers of chat rooms, I want to try and get the message across that not all chat rooms are dangerous! I have a team of over 50 admins and moderators that work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, making Live Online Chat probably one of the safest chat sites on the net. We have many rules that help keep out internet predators and potentially dangerous people. I think we deserve something within Wikipedia to mention our site, what we do and why not all chat rooms are dangerous. My team work very hard. When we find a potentially bad person, such as a pedophile, they are banned and IP reported to their ISP. We do our best to keep the internet clean and safe and above all, give decent good people a place to talk online, any age, in safe moderated chat rooms, monitored 24/7.

I would write an article myself about my site, but can´t see how I could do it without it sounding self-promoting! I am also not the greatest writer, my grammar is terrible! I wouldn´t want to put my crap writing on Wikipedia!!

If you can help me with an article about Live Online Chat and the safety of our Free Chat Rooms, where I can maybe have this written, I would be greatly happy. I think people like me and my admin team, that work for free, should get a little bit of recognisation for the hard work we do in keeping chat rooms safe.

Thank you and once again, sorry for adding the link to what I thought was external references. It wont happen again, but all I ask is for some help with publicity for LiveOnlineChat.net, pop by and see how safe it actually is to chat online in free chat rooms.

Thank you

Hello,

I've seen that you keep http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_betting not beeing spammed. I would like to add an external link to that section, but of course I do not want to be considered a spammy one, that is why I was asking you here before I add it.

It is regarding Odds Archive (http://www.oddsarchive.com). Please take 1 minute to surf the site and see that is quite unique with all past, present and near future sports odds for moneyline, total and spread. No advertising in the site and no affiliation system in it.

Josh Tyrangiel Sandbox Deletion

Hi-there. I was working on a Sandbox draft of the Josh Tyrangiel article and noticed that you had deleted it yesterday. I realize that I have a conflict of interest when working with Bloomberg related articles and have declared that in both my user page and within the WP:COI noticeboard here. Because of my conflict of interest I was planning to propose my edits to interested project pages to ensure that any edits were implemented properly. Is there any way you can restore my sandbox draft or do you have other suggestions? Thanks! --RivBitz (talk) 20:45, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Bot problem

Hello, XLinkBot (talk · contribs) is issuing {{uw-spam4im}} warnings on pages such as User talk:Alowi33 for the addition of a single spam link. While there is no doubt that the link was inappropriate, a level one warning would have been better. I also disagree with bots issuing 4im warnings, as that could be very disheartening to new editors. Would you please fix this? Thanks! Reaper Eternal (talk) 14:16, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

The bot only does this to users (and IPs) which have placed links that are related to the software application "Commission Breakthrough". The sole purpose of the application is to spam Wikipedia. The sites it links to are pretty much content-free cookie cutter sites that offer no value at all to Wikipedia (look at the sites linked by User:Alowi33 for an example). We humans are also much harder on these accounts/IPs as the only reason they are editing Wikipedia at all is to place their spam links. --Versageek 16:02, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Ah, that makes more sense then. I thought it was just run-of-the-mill personal site spamming. Reaper Eternal (talk) 13:05, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Versageek,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and

Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's

Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we

teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community,

and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what

you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community

[[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)/Archive_82#Learn_to_be_a_Wikipedia_Administrator_-

_New_class_at_MSU|HERE]], where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my

students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training,

motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one

of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of

communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)

  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will

never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.

  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an

interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.

  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics

review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have

been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak

with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I

will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your

name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be

more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)Nah, I think the bot did a perfectly good job there. You may want to have read through the policies and guidelines linked. Thanks. --Dirk Beetstra T C 10:21, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

I've perused the policies and guidelines and I'm still of the opinion that this link is justifiable whilst both your and Versageek's unjustified views manifest an inability to apply the p&g with the necessary flexibility. It is insufficient just to state: "read the p&g" As soon as an automatic decision is being queried, the person(s) making the decision has to justify it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Petruspotgieter (talkcontribs) 11:43, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

It is justified: "Wikipedia articles may include links to web pages outside Wikipedia (external links), but they should not normally be used in the body of an article." - in the body we do internal linking, not external linking. It may be a good external link in the external links section, but I do think that also there it fails 'Links normally to be avoided'. I hope this explains. --Dirk Beetstra T C 11:45, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Question about XLinkBot

Hello Versageek and "tps" Beetstra. Earlier today XLinkBot removed and EL from the article for the film Freaks. Here is a link to its editing history page for your convenience [9]. Earlier a different IP from Toronto also tried to add it to that article and a few others. Then this SPA AntaeustheMighty (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) showed up and tried to sneak it in as a reference. It seems to me that it is, at least, an editor with a COI trying to use wikipedia to lead readers to its website - if I am wrong please feel free to let me know that. I have two questions. First, would XLinkBot have caught the attempt to add it as a reference if I hadn't seen it first? Next, what would be the most appropriate message board for me to report this to if the person persists in trying to add it? Thanks ahead of time for your response. Hey there :). You're being contacted because you're an edit filter manager, At the moment, we're developing Version 5 of the Article Feedback Tool, which you may or may not have heard about. Phage display

You have removed both a historical letter from Bruce Merrifield, Nobel Laureate from the Phage Display site, plus the documentation of the legal cases involved in the invention of phage display. Are you in the pay of the pharmaceutical companies? They are the only ones who have tried to suppress Professor Pieczenik's inventorship and desire to have his work available for the public good. You have made access to biologics which can cure various cancers prohibatively expensive by allowing pharma to pursue their financial agenda. Professor Pieczenik created what is the biological equivalent of Wikipedia, he freely gave away the idea of monoclonal antibodies and also combinatorial libraries as well as the derivative phage-display technology. The patent priority is to block pharma from exploiting an idea they did not create for their own private commercial agenda. You have contributed to this theft, in your ignorance. More in sorrow than in anger. Professor Pieczenik is the only person in scientific history to publish with three independent Nobel Laureates ie Crick, Brenner and Klug and to have worked with Sanger and Merrifield among others. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GPieczenik (talkcontribs) 23:42, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

You aren't [[WP:BITE]ing. I was waiting for someone who is familiar with the field to come along & determine if the dispute over who invented the technology had enough merit to be mentioned in the article. That is really the only thing that kept me from doing a wholesale revert based on WP:OR and WP:COI. Wikipedia isn't the place to assert legal claims in an intellectual property dispute. --Versageek 21:42, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

J.M. Benjamin

I'm sorry but I'm new to this. I submitted that article about Author J.M. Benjamin because I felt him to be relevant to his profession and his community. This is my second time submitting it and each time it has been deleted I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. Before I created the article this I took at a moment to review other authors that are listed here and basically did as someone did for them. The funny thing is that he is listed in articles through out Wikipedia however each someone creats an article in reference to him it gets deleted. HELP!

Xlinkbot / user talk warning / spam blacklist

Hiya. :) Totally minor suggestion: when the bot adds warnings to user talk pages, it might be a good idea to remove the actual link from the warning (or find some way of obfuscating it? dunno). Otherwise, if a link actually gets spamblacklisted, then someone vandalizes the talk page, or if a bot comes along to archive the talk page, it might get blocked from doing so by the spamblacklist. Admittedly, admins should make it a point to deactivate links they blacklist when possible, but in instances where it gets added to the global/meta blacklist, we obviously can't necessarily count on that happening.

Annnyway, it's not a major thing in the slightest—just food for thought. :P Otherwise, keep up the great work. =)

Dumb bot

There is a bot around, which true to its capabilities is named DumbBot. I edited the Flixborough disaster page, and changed a dead link into a valid link. Your bot reverted this edit, I undid your bot's actions [10]. The bot's reasoning, if any, is murky, after all it's the same domain, just a different pointer within that domain, and the old pointer returns error 404. Even a dumb bot should be able to identify this situation. These automated edits, with no human oversight, is aproblem AccidentRecorder (talk) 07:58, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

XLinkBot has deleted a massive section of an article for no apparent reason.

I would like report that XLinkBot has deleted over a thousand words of the Beyonders: A World Without Heroes article, when the only thing wrong with it was an external link to an open wiki. I understand that when an unacceptable external link is added, XLinkBot deletes all the other edits made within that same editing session. However, the unacceptable link was the only thing added during the session in which it was created. Furthermore, even if additional content were added to the article during that session, the content XLinkBot deleted from sessions before wouldn't be effected. No harm done, as I subsequently reverted everything it did (except for the link correction). However, this is an article that I have put a lot of time and effort into. I would appreciate it if you prevented this bot from doing the same to other pages. This isn't an isolated event either, as others have reported similar behavior from this bot on other pages. I suspect that this bot has several bugs. Please reply.

Hadn't been planning any, but after looking more closely, I concur & have indeffed two CU confirmed socks & given the sockmaster a wiki-vacation. hi

I am writing regarding the page I was trying to create earlier, called Trucking magazines Canada. I really appreciate your input about writing about one magazine rather than talking about all trucking magazines. If I write about only one magazine, or a publisher of multiple magazines, how do I ensure that my article will meet the wikipedia criteria? (I don't want to have a promotional article). I looked at Time magazine's wikipedia page and... Today's Trucking, the magazine I have gather the most information on, is not as old as Time (it's 25 in August).

If I have a page with today's trucking magazine's brief history (founders etc), circulation numbers, editors... is that enough, or what other information do you think wikipedia readers and users would like to know?

Thanks,

Adventure Massage Therapy

Hi there,

"Adventure Massage Therapy" needs to be entered as a subcategory/ separate modality of Massage. (Some of the modalities under Massage should also be re-entered under Massage Therapy, to be politically correct, but that is another topic).

You can look me up as a licensed member of Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals (ABMP) on their website, or at honora.massagetherapy.com for more validation on this topic. I am still working on my website, and thought it would be crude to post that as a direct link/source.

I understand not wanting to put my name in there, but the truth is that Adventure Massage Therapy is a very real, legitimate form of Bodywork, and it needs to be entered in the dictionary. Either it could be a form of "Mobile Massage" (btw, that definition is soo outdated), or its own thing. It should be both, to be correct.

I would like to come up with another, more "ambiguous" definition for this, but do not want to cause any controversy. If you like, you can proof-read it for me.

I have no doubt that waaay back in history, somewhere, there could have been massage therapists out there that carried their massage tables 3,000 feet vertically or skied one over a mountain pass. However, I have not heard of any. Suffice it to say, whether it is appropriate or not to mention who is or has pioneered this method, I did and I have. "Famous" people who could vouch for me include: Dean Potter, Dean Fidelman, Ivo Ninov, Cedar Wright, Sean Leary, the list goes on. Would you like email addresses?

And for the record, I also "invented" or "pioneered" the lettuce bikini. I created it with a fashion-designer and wore it while snowboarding down a hill in front of thousands of people. It was aired on MTV for months and then they teamed up with P.E.T.A. and stole my idea for an ad-campaign. The Bikini Section featuring Pamela Anderson w/ PETA should also include a picture from Copper Mountain's Eenie Weenie Bikini Contest, 2006. My "kale" bikini made headlines across Colorado, was broadcasted on three television channels in the U.S. and Canada, and shut down the Eenie Weenie bikini contest for good. I am attaching a picture of me wearing it, from Freeskier Magazine's website. This will be entered because it is regarding the history of the bikini.

Thank You Very Much,

Hi. I created an article about Dgamesky. Then I was informed that it was delected because of advertising or promotion and copyright infringement. Our company is Dgamesky.com and I want to create an article to introduce it. So now my questions are: Is it possible to create such an article on Wikipedia? What should I do to avoid my article being delected? How can I prove that i am not infringing any copyright? How should i introduse Dgamesky so that it will not be regarded as promotion? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joewkpd (talkcontribs) 05:12, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

You need to provide thrid-party reliable sources that indicate why the website/company meets the requirements listed under WP:WEB or WP:CORP (our notability requirements for web content /corporations). --Versageek 14:49, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Deletion of NewScientist Jobs

As you will have noticed it was a stub. Although it's clearly important and necessary to add content to a page like this, I would argue that the category Employment websites is an important resource within wikipedia too. Without the existence of the deleted page the category page lacks mention of a significant resource for job seekers and employers. I had no idea that this article existed before.

--SewerCat (talk) 14:21, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

The jobs board on this site really doesn't meet our notability requirements for websites. A mention of it's existence on the New Scientist page is probably the best option. --Versageek 14:46, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

With respect, the New Scientist Jobs site is not the only one that is at issue here, and I would like to find a solution that might apply to other sites that might not fit the criterion. Although I understand that wikipedia is a reference work, and not a directory, a shortcoming of the remedy you offer is that, although a visitor can expect to find nearly exhaustive listings of software items in various categories, for instance, she cannot at this point have the same expectation when it comes to job sites. Surely a source of jobs is as important as some obscure piece of software?

You have reverted a valid link to a political party at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_political_parties_in_the_United_States

In your statement to IP 67.142.172.26 you mentioned that there should be a discussion on the talk page. The American Patriot Party has presented a statement with no response, only removal of the link by those wishing to remove any record of a valid political party in existence since 2003.

Please protect the link http:// www.americanpatriotparty.cc, and the ability to establish a wiki page as earlier placed for the American Patriot Party (United States); instead of adding to the corruption by reverting or "bot deleting" it.

Deletion of a page I created relating to David Hurowitz : mobile technology inventor

I was just wondering why you deleted my article relating to this inventor? I understand it was an article about a real person, but I thought this particular person was of notable interest to the technology, specifically advancements in mobile technology and patents, community. I would have included more information relating to why he was prominent, but I wanted to avoid language that sounded promotional or biased. I was researching mobile technology patents and came across multiple technologies invented by Hurowitz that are relevant to the industry. Since he created many, instead of just one, technologies and had them patented I thought he was definitely worthy of inclusion. I am a technology nerd and I realize that the general community may not be as interested in these topics as I am. However I feel that there are enough people researching these topics to warrant inclusion in wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LMiller55 (talkcontribs) 20:13, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Self AfD

Hello. I am fairly new to Wikipedia editing. I have used it as a "regular user" for quite some time though.

Hypothetically, if you nominate your own article for AfD, after you realize it may not be notable enough or cannot find any significant reliable sources, are you required to tell yourself (on your own Talk page) that your article has been nominated for deletion? Because it seems a little silly to tell somebody about an AfD if you are the person nominating your own article for AfD.

Yehiel Bar

I don't understand how the Yehiel Bar stub I started could possibly be an A7 case. This person had just got into the Knesset (the Israeli parliment), which means that he qualifies under the criterion of "members or former members of a national, state or provincial legislature" (WP:BIO#Politicians #1). Although the results aren't completely final yet, he ran in the list of the Labor Party as #6, and the party currently is getting 15 people. Although it may still drop by 1, there is no way it will drop by 10, which would be necessary fopr this person not to get in. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 05:38, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately, the article consisted of only an infobox, which didn't convey (to me - someone unfamiliar with Israeli politics) that he met any criteria. I restored the page & moved it to your userspace - please add some narrative. --Versageek 05:46, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
If you would have followed the links on the page (including a link to Israeli legislative election, 2013), you would have seen that my infobox was a claim to the criterion I mentioned above. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 05:59, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
And you should probably never A7-delete an article with an interwiki link without first asking a user who speaks the other language, as some times the other language can clearly show the notability. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 06:07, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I'm something of a wiki spaz in that I use it to find stuff. Very useful indeed. However, I have created an online business and thought i would create a page on wiki (as most businesses tend to do). Wikipedia is such a big place . . . which is my lame excuse for my lack of familiarity with XLinkBot. The latter has been amicably and I think knowledgably put forward as a far better way of dealing with the (perhaps well intended, though still deleterious) addition of links to "sources" (dubious material, thrown together in a rush by un(der)paid hacks) in "content farms" than the method I proposed. Maybe in part because my own proposal keeps changing, as people present new ideas. While I don't find this subject particularly interesting, I'm alarmed by the fact that Goldblum is fighting tooth and nail to get users who question the neutrality of his article to get blocked. I request you to help us determine whether the two accounts indeed belong to Goldblum. Nataev (talk) 11:33, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Please note that Nataev (talk · contribs) is posting this item on the talk pages of > a dozen admins. It might be instructive to investigate more deeply via his contribs as to why he is doing this -- I suggest that it has to do with his right-wing (Israeli) sympathies and his desire to smear Goldblum for being a leftist (on which [13]). Nomoskedasticity (talk) 11:40, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
Here we go again. This is the first time I have asked for help from a user who has access to CheckUser. Now Nomoskedasticity himself is calling me names. I don't know much about left-right politics. I have no interest about subjects related to Israel either. My sole problem is that Amiram Goldblum has written the entire article about himself. If doing so is acceptable on Wikipedia, then I have no problems with it. Nataev (talk) 11:46, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

xlinkbot does not assume good faith

Hey, my understanding is:

1) wiki editors should assume good faith 2) wiki in general is losing editors and newcomers find it frustrating to edit because their work is so quickly reverted.

Enter xlinkbot which

1) Assumes bad faith 2) Reverts edits 3) Points the user to a dense thicket of wiki policies to explain away what it has done

Really?

Your opinion is needed in this discussion on Talk:Zeitgeist: The Movie

Hi. Two editors are advocating for the exclusion of any mention in the Zeitgeist: The Movie article that Peter Joseph, the creator of that film has stated publicly that words attributed to him in a story cited as a source in the article misquoted him, and that he has not distanced himself from the ideas expressed in that film, as that cited source indicates. I have responded to their arguments, but neither of them has responded directly to my counterarguments, but simply repeat the same statements of theirs over and over. Myself and one other editor disagree with them, so two editors are for the material's inclusion, and two are for its exclusion, with no sign of consensus in sight. Can you please offer your viewpoint in the discussion so that we can achieve consensus? Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 01:18, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

Possible Sockpuppetry on the part of JPaulm2/Unionvillian

Hi, Versageek, you are listed as a CheckUser, and we have an odd situation wrt the Unionville, Ontario article, that we would appreciate help with. Over the space of a bit over a year, an unregistered user has been making changes to this article, basically pushing a view of the boundaries and history of this village which differs from that of the various historical societies here. Some of the changes were strange, and always showed misspellings, bad grammar, etc. I took it upon myself to get the article vetted by the Unionville Historical Society, and we finally got a version that they accepted - when we could get it to hold still long enough to read! We then got the article semi-protected, which slowed him or her down a bit. In May of this year a registered user called Unionvillian showed up, promoting the same agenda. He or she managed to get him/herself blocked for varying amounts of time, and has been appealing plaintively, which appeals seem to have all been declined. A new ID has now shown up called JPaulm2, again promoting the same agenda - which ID coincidentally is my ID with a '2' attached. Now his middle name may be Paul, and his first name may be John or James, but I suspect him of sockpuppetry, and it would be great if we could compare the IP addresses of Unionvillian and JPaulm2 (*not* JPaulm - that's me - I know where I am!). Many thanks in advance. Jpaulm (talk) 20:55, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

Your suspicions were well founded. I was inclined to block the JPaulm2 account for impersonation, but since the CheckUser tool confirmed sockpuppetry, I blocked for that instead. I also extended Unionvillian's block and left him a note. --Versageek 21:52, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
Many thanks for your prompt action. I don't know why he thought that this new ID was a smart thing to do - I might not have noticed if he had picked a different ID! Thanks again! Jpaulm (talk) 02:25, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
Sorry to bother you again, but Unionvillian appears to be becoming slightly irrational. If you could take a look at the last 2 paras in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Unionvillian (my comment and his unsigned one), you can see that he is now accusing me of hacking his computer - as if I knew how! I am not sure if I should be worried... He is not telling the truth about not inviting him to UVA and URA meetings - we have done so several times. Can anything be done? This is absurd and a complete waste of everyone's time. Thanks in advance for anything you can do. Jpaulm (talk) 02:11, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
Interesting: Unionvillian has deleted the two paras I mentioned, and restored a lot of "block" messages that he deleted earlier. Looks like he was monitoring your talk page. I guess we are communicating... in an indirect sort of way! Thanks. Jpaulm (talk) 14:48, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
I'm getting paranoid! Another user has appeared since Aug. 21, modifying all the same town articles as Unionvillian and the previous unregistered user. This one calls him or herself Markham1 - he/she would be stupid to use the same IP address as last time, but I feel it would be worth checking for sockpuppetry... Also, on Aug. 18, Unionvillian again deleted almost 5000 characters from his User Talk page about being blocked and appeals to reverse it, etc. I guess, he's within his rights, but it still seems a bit strange! Jpaulm (talk) 20:34, 25 August 2013 (UTC)
Yup, I'm pretty sure Markham1 is the same person - s/he is being cautious so far, but seems to have the same hangups as the last few characters. Some of the info seems valid, but we have effectively frozen the article, so s/he should really check out any changes to the article with the various village associations before going ahead and making them.. Unfortunately, it is just too easy to make changes to WP! Jpaulm (talk) 20:02, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
Markham1 is apparently the same person as Jpaulm2, whom you banned, and Unionvillian before that. Same hangups, same changes, same persistence! Don't know if it's the same IP address, but it's got to be the same person! This is pretty irritating! Argggh! Jpaulm (talk) 15:41, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
Yup, Markham1 is definitely a sock puppet of Unionvillian, JPaulm2, etc. If you look at the history of Unionville, Ont., it becomes very clear! The population of Unionville fluctuates between 30,000 and 80,000! Hope no poor soul is trying to do research for a term paper or something! Can we just lock the page, or give ownership to one individual? Just wondering...  :-) Jpaulm (talk) 00:20, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Getting all external links in "real-time"

Hi, I'm Vinay Goel, data engineer at the Internet Archive. We're starting to work on a web archiving project where we crawl external links from Wikipedia articles at the time they're made (so near real time). Looking at the Recent Changes feed, it looks like I'd need to parse the 'diff' page to find any new links, or in the case of 'new' pages, parse the new page to find all external links. I was referred to you and Beestra by legoktm (from #mediawiki freenode IRC). legoktm mentioned that you maintain a spam watching bot that extracts out new outgoing links from pages on an ongoing basis and it'd be great to piggyback of the list you generate.

Can you help me gain access to this list?

American Bulldog: Revision as of 22:07, 12 July 2013

Hello sir,

i find this particular article more educating visually because of the images differentiating Standard strain and the Bully strain of the American Bulldog that as of now, there was a revision made to the article and the images were removed.

I understand to speed up loading pages, images must be lessened. However today's generation would be able to learn more by presenting the breeds' physical differences in this case the Standard and Bully strains of the American Bulldog.

I would humbly propose that the revision as of 22:07, 12 July 2013 must replace the current article for the American Bulldog posted by USER:Tikuko . For the reason that revisions to the article was unneccessary and will not help readers to understand more about the breed. The revision made did not add value to the article itself.

thank you for your time. Wikiuser — Preceding unsigned comment added by 112.204.168.205 (talk) 12:01, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

Email Page

I have added sections to Email page. I was in the midst of detailed primary references. Teddickey simply deleted no reason given. Now the page is locked, and I have something posted on "sockpuppet". Is this how a new user who is ready to contribute with primary sources treated? Is this how a member of the MIT community for over 35 years treated? Kindly let me know how I can add the primary citations and references. This is what I had added (see below). I've got primary references for each sentence here. Raytheon/BBN and ARPANET folks do not own the narrative on the history of email, especially when facts have been unearthed in original sources which prove a difference between "email" the system and the generic terms "electronic mail" and "electronic messaging".

Thank you, TV

Prior to 1978, the terms “electronic mail” and “electronic messaging” were used interchangeably to refer to generic methods of transmitting electronic documents such as faxes or electronic text messages. Noam Chomsky, MIT Professor and linguist, clarified the difference between “email”, the system, and the more broader and generic terms “electronic mail” or “electronic messaging”, during a heated controversy that emerged after the February 16, 2012 acquisition by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History (NMAH) of the 1978 computer code, papers and artifacts, documenting the invention of email at UMDNJ.

During the controversy, David Crocker, a 32-year employee and consultant of Raytheon/BBN and 1970s ARPANET team member, claimed that “email” existed prior to 1978. Raytheon/BBN, a multi-billion dollar defense contractor, uses the logo of the “@” sign to define its brand image claiming it had invented email in the 1970s.

David Crocker supported Raytheon/BBN’s claim by attempting to redefine the term “email” to refer to generic methods for the simple exchange of electronic text messages. Noam Chomsky and other scholars presented a historical document authored by David Crocker in 1977, omitted by David Crocker’s in his 2012 arguments against the primacy of invention of email UMDNJ.

In the December 1977 RAND Report, David Crocker, 35 years prior to the 2012 controversy, summarized the state of research in electronic messaging by stating:

“At this time, no attempt is being made to emulate a full-scale, inter-organizational mail system. The fact that the system is intended for use in various organizational contexts and by users of differing expertise makes it almost impossible to build a system which responds to all users’ needs."

Noam Chomsky, referring to the linguistic fact the term “email” did not exist before 1978, and given the admission by David Crocker of the lack of intent by ARPANET team to create the electronic version of the inter-organizational mail system, as late as December 1977, months before the creation of email at UMDNJ, concluded:

“Given the term email was not used prior to 1978, and there was no intention to emulate ‘…a full-scale, inter-organizational mail system,” as late as December 1977, there is no controversy here, except the one created by industry insiders, who have a vested interest.” — Preceding unsigned comment added by TVleck1971 (talkcontribs) 18:16, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

If you would like me to provide the citations for each, I can provide. Thank you in advance, TV — Preceding unsigned comment added by TVleck1971 (talkcontribs) 18:17, 24 May 2014 (UTC)<!-Template:Unsigned -->

Random Sockpuppet "Investigations" Appear to be in Retribution to My Bringing Up Primary Source Facts --- Need Advise

Dear Versageek, I have followed your advise and gone to email Talk page. Immediately after I began posting facts, another sockpuppet investigation was just opened up on me AFTER I started this talk page. The first one was when I did my first edit on the Main Page. I followed etiquette and went to talk, per your adfice. Now, after I posted the items on Talk page, another "investigation". It appears to me that someone is against my bringing up facts and I would like to know how to call for an investigation on this matter. Please advise.

Best, TV TVleck1971 (talk) 17:46, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

@TVleck1971: the other notification you received was a duplicate link to the same discussion, not a new investigation. It was also done by an account which is now blocked for sockpuppetry, so pretty safe to ignore. I do suggest that you explain your side of things at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Petemclaren, but I do not think there is any reason to think that the second notification was in "retribution" for your posting on the article talk page. Thanks for the update. Will do on the Sockpuppet page. On the content I wanted to post, can you kindly look at what I believe are just knee-jerk reactions by by Tedickey. I want the spelling section reposted, which was done well, so I can propose my 3-4 references on the confusion pre-1978 on the lack of clarity of "electronic mail", versus "email" on the talk page of Email article.

Thanks again for all your advice. Will sockpuppetry come up each time I post something that someone disagrees with. From my reading of it, it said that I have two accounts. I only have one account. Can anyone on wikipedia accuse anyone on sockpuppetry? If it is that easy, a very convenient way of putting barriers to content that should go up, but someone else doesn't like for what ever allegiances they have. Best, TV --TVleck1971 (talk) 21:00, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

@VQuakr: I did as you suggested and posted my side of things on the sockpuppet page of Peter Mclaren. Is his now over? can we get some consesus on the Email article page on putting back Mclaren's nicely documented spelling citation, so I can add my references to the confusion of "electronic mail",pre-1978? Or is Tedickey simply going to be allowed to continue edit warring on this factual matter, and I will continue to be called a sockpuppet.

XLinkBot question

Bit of a situation I wanted to ask you about, because I'm not sure how to handle it. For unusual but legitimate reasons which I'm about to clarify, our article on the actress Tracy Wright has contained the string "Mothface@sympatico.ca" for the past 2.5 years without incident — but earlier today, somebody changed it to @yahoo.ca instead, which triggered XLinkBot to revert it. The issue is that while the string obviously resembles an e-mail address, it's actually in the article as the title of a song about Wright by a notable songwriter rather than as an e-mail address, so in this particular instance it is something that should be in the article (and yahoo, not sympatico, is actually the correct song title.) So I wanted to ask if there's a way to flag this particular instance as something that XLinkBot shouldn't touch. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 03:18, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi Versageek! Is the bot changing articles automatically, or is it you? There is an error in the Real life escape game section (twice "Australia") and the bot reverted it. Permanent location games are not mentioned in the article, that is a big miss (day events are only half the fun), does the bot delete edits because of the link? Should I add it without the link? There are links in the references to day events, however.

Thanks anyways for your help and your work!

XLinkBot

Hi Versageek. Wasn't really sure where to post this, but with this edit, XLinkBot removed five completely genuine polls from United States House of Representatives elections in Massachusetts, 2014, because the IP who had added them sourced one of them to a Twitter post from the polling company which announced details of the poll they had conducted. Obviously it's supposed to be removing things sourced to Twitter (and I have since re-added the poll with a proper link) but it somewhat overreacted when it removed the other four, none of which were sourced to Twitter. Thanks, Tiller54 (talk) 01:30, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Please check a note XLinkBot has inserted at User talk:Bhoomika hegde. I suspect this part

waterfoot

hi I updated waterfoot to provide info on the page waterfoot beach on facebook which provides users with an opportunity to view real pictures of the place and with contact to the community if they have a question about coming down here on holiday etc. yes we would like traffic to the page but it has no commercial value

its a bit weird that this page contains info about other areas near waterfoot eg the forest park 2miles away but the beach info which isn't present is deleted. I probably did it badly but as a total novice was quite delighted to have succeeded and then gutted it was deleted. would you please relook at the page and see if you can it in any way - also I and the members of the page actually live here in waterfoot and would really appreciate this positive addition.

hope you can help x

Could you look at these

Hi Versageek; Recently I tried to restore the low page-count article Metropolitan (1990 film) to the previous Plot summary from last month which looked more stable, when a dynamically changing IP-editor started altering the text without Talk page discussion. I then received back-to-back responses from multiple IP-accounts and one registered account regarding this relatively low traffic page. This appeared odd and disproportional, and I understand you are an expert at CheckUser. May I request a check on the mulitple accounts listed on this diff [15]. The long IP-account number in this list also comes across with a wide range of variations. Possibly you could assist or point me in the correct direction. FelixRosch (TALK) 18:02, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

The checkuser tool isn't particularly useful in cases like this where most of the participants are already IP addresses. I would suggest focusing on the content issue rather than frustration caused by the initial head-butting confrontation. --Versageek 21:44, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

Checkuser Request

Hi there,

I have some reason to think that my laptop was stolen last Friday morning EST and that access to this account was compromised in a way that creates potential for abusive editing by whoever has my laptop. Can you run a checkuser on this account to see whether and at what time someone logged into this account on the morning (EST) of Friday the 6th, and if so, where they logged in? I know that Wikipedia checkusers are not a laptop-finding service, and if I knew how to check the IP addresses for my own account, I would. But the theft creates the possibility that someone will make abusive edits from my account, and that's something I'd like to head off -- in addition to getting my laptop back. Any help or advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, -- AndySimpson talk? 18:43, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

Your Bot

Hello, just added a youtube link to a video and received this message:

February 2015 Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Piergiorgio Welby has been reverted. Your edit here to Piergiorgio Welby was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline. The external link(s) you added or changed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VwgVTG6R9A) is/are on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. If the external link you inserted or changed was to a media file (e.g. a sound or video file) on an external server, then note that linking to such files may be subject to Wikipedia's copyright policy, as well as other parts of our external links guideline. If the information you linked to is indeed in violation of copyright, then such information should not be linked to. Please consider using our upload facility to upload a suitable media file, or consider linking to the original. If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! --XLinkBot (talk) 17:01, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

The fact is I am the author of that video and the youtube link quoted is the one operated and owned by the owners of the said video - Al Jazeera in this specific instance. I understand a bot is uncapable of spotting the difference between legitimated and illegitimate youtube links, or capable of knowing who the potential copyright owner of contents is, but he/she got it wrong this time around...

Hope you can mend it and keep the link posted. And, if you get a change, wacht the video. Welby's story is a touching one.

but your bot is reverting them. not only the links but the vocabulary too.

for example: PKK did not fight in rojava YPG did. I can find hundreds of citations about this.

the kurdish guy who changed the word terrorist to militant also erased pkk attacks on sweden and pkk attacks on civilians.

also please lock the title pkk as it is being used as a propoganda tool by those terrorists, if you can.

debating pkk as non-terrorist is same as debating al-qaida or hezbollah as non-terrorist.

excuse my broken english and thank you in advance.

Your XLinkBot bot reverted a template:copypaste

Dear Versageek: I noticed on the Phil Drummond article that most of the text is from his facebook page. So I put the copypaste template and a couple others. The copypaste template contained the link to his publicly view-able facebook page. This is my edited version.

Confirmation

Thank you so much in deed, Mr. XLinkBot.

Concerning the word, "Karbala," phonetically speaking, there is a big difference between the two letters, "E & A" according to the accurate Arabic pronunciation. Some words or letters might sound the same to the non-Arabic speaking people, but to the native speakers, they and how they are pronounced sound different. As an Arab, linguist, and translator of the official website of the Imam Hussein Holy Shrine, I'm merely trying to help make the article better because I love Wikipedia so much, and I'd always do my best to take care of it in order to be better. If you would like me to help, I'll absolutely be more than happy to cooperate with you to make any articles concerning my environment, such as history, word pronunciation, or anything else, better.

Invitation to subscribe to the edit filter mailing list

Hi, as a user in the edit filter manager user group we wanted to let you know about the new wikipedia-en-editfilters mailing list. As part of our recent efforts to improve the use of edit filters on the English Wikipedia it has been established as a venue for internal discussion by edit filter managers regarding private filters (those only viewable by administrators and edit filter managers) and also as a means by which non-admins can ask questions about hidden filters that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss on-wiki. As an edit filter manager we encourage you to subscribe; the more users we have in the mailing list the more useful it will be to the community. If you subscribe we will send a short email to you through Wikipedia to confirm your subscription, but let us know if you'd prefer another method of verification. I'd also like to take the opportunity to invite you to contribute to the proposed guideline for edit filter use at WP:Edit filter/Draft and the associated talk page. Thank you! Please sign new Wikimedia confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information by 15 December

This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that anyone with access to nonpublic information sign the new confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain their access. Unique bid auction

Hello, I see you reverted my edit to Unique bid auction. I think that and Guess 2/3 of the average are similar games and so should link to each other. What was your rationale for reverting? Thanks, cagliost (talk) 15:28, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

It didn't make any sense to me. I suggest you add text to the article explaining how the game is relevant to the auction, maybe under the mathematics part - the text can include link to the game article, similar text on the game article would be helpful too. --Versageek 18:56, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

Bot diff

Hey Versageek. I know nothing about bots so I'm not touching this one without asking. There were COI issues and too many links in the above diff - but are the sweeping content changes something a bot should be doing? It appears to have been triggered by the excessive linking, which there was, I'm just a little confused. Thank you! PanydThe muffin is not subtle 23:12, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

The bot normally reverts all edits by a user because we have found that to not do so tends to leave things broken. --Versageek 20:42, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

Reputation Management Edit

Why did you revert my edit and addition to citing the fact that Amazon filed suit against Fiverr users who were selling fake reviews? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rdr1985 (talkcontribs) 19:24, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

I have readded your material with a slight change. I placed the statement in front of the existing references which mention the Fiverr site specifically. I had reverted you because we normally expect a reference from a reliable source to be included with a specific statement like the one you added. If you are adding details from existing references, it would be good to mention that in the edit comment. Sorry for the confusion. -- Versageek 20:38, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Collateral damage from rangeblock

Hi Versageek,

I'm writing on your talk page because you took part in the discussion about the extension of a range IP block, there're less than 2 hours left for the new block to start and yesterday I added some information making a summary at the end of the section: may you please join back the discussion and give your final opinion about the matter?

Thank you in advance!

about deleted page Dayanand Jha

Hi, I want to recreate the page Dayanand Jha. I followed the general process for it. Can you help me in this regard? https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dayanand_Jha&action=edit&redlink=1 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Knjhakeshav (talkcontribs) 11:15, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

I can not restore the version that was deleted because it was a copyright violation. You should feel free to start a new article in the Draft space. That will give you time to develop the content before it is evaluated for publishing in regular article space. Please remember not to copy and paste text from other sites. You must write the article in your own words. --Versageek 22:02, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

Hello! My article Samar Virdi was deleted Speedily. I am very new to Wikipedia and I was making an article for my friend who is a film maker and photographer. There are some things that might sound promotional but are absolutely not!

  • Photographer and film maker: That is only his profession not anything that I am promoting.
  • YouTuber: This is what he does! And I also deleted the link to his article, I just told the name of the article.
  • Social media platforms: I removed their links from his article so that it isn't promotional
  • Awards and interviews: All are true. If you want evidence, you can visit www.samarvirdi.com
  • Shopping link: that link was deleted by me as you thought it was promotional. But still, my article was deleted again.

Hence, I request you to please restore my article and if there is anything else you want me to edit in the article, please tell me! Thanks In Advance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Samarthvohra (talkcontribs) 03:30, 5 December 2015 (UTC)

Why revert facts

I have added information that is factual to dysfunction why has it been removed 97.32.69.141 (talk) 07:12, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

Your garage band does not yet merit an entry on Wikipedia. Try again after they have some chart topping hits or win some awards.--Versageek 11:31, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

This garageband and has released its second album the " The long road home" and is well documented on the web and how do you a page editor decide what merits notable mention. one would assume that your opinion of Dysfunctions status in pop culture cannot weigh in on our right to be included in a factual statements page. if your opinion is the deciding factor in what is factual and what is not well this system is broken and i guess u should delete god or Hermes Dysfunction is here 50.153.134.12 (talk) 07:39, 8 March 2016 (UTC)

about wikihow page

Hi, I want to apologise for any waste of time I might have caused/causing you :)

There is small inconsistency (big for me) in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WikiHow. Open Source and Open Content definitions are violated by the "nc" part of the Creative Commons license and since WikiHow content is released under a Creative Commons (by-nc-sa) license it is quite unfair to call it Open Content.

Extract from http://opendefinition.org "" 2.1.8 Application to Any Purpose

The license must allow use, redistribution, modification, and compilation for any purpose. The license must not restrict anyone from making use of the work in a specific field of endeavor. "" this is not exactly Open Content Licence but can be easily confused without more explanation.

Further more Open Content Licence itself does not prohibit commercial use: from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Content_License ""

With the exception of media and handling costs, it forbids charging for copies of a licensed work, but does not otherwise forbid commercial use.[1]

""

from https://web.archive.org/web/19981206111937/http://www.opencontent.org/opl.shtml "" You may at your option charge a fee for the media and/or handling involved in creating a unique copy of the OC for use offline, you may at your option offer instructional support for the OC in exchange for a fee, or you may at your option offer warranty in exchange for a fee. ""

Basically the two sentences : "" wikiHow is an open source and open content project.[7] The modified MediaWiki software is freely released[8] and the content is released under a Creative Commons (by-nc-sa) license.[9][10] "" are incompatible and in fact : 1) 'wikiHow is an open source' == 'The modified MediaWiki software is freely released' 2) 'and open content project' == false 3) 'and the content is released under a Creative Commons (by-nc-sa) license' == true

Thus 'wikiHow is an open source and open content project' can just be removed to avoid confusion :)

Btw I am not a hater or anything, on the country I am a fan of WikiHow even if it is by-nc-sa, I just like accuracy :)

Thank for your time! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:1811:523:5F00:49BE:F8C:1E9C:6FEB (talk) 22:35, 29 December 2015 (UTC)
