Thanks for nominating. Does this require any action on my part? Roundtheworld (talk) 07:08, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
@Roundtheworld: Probably no, but if you see any queries then feel free to resolve them. I may "be bold" to resolve issues if we get a pernickity review and there may be questions raised that you can answer most easily. However my intention was not to commit you to (even more) good work, but always good to co operate. Cheers Victuallers (talk) 07:16, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
It's funny — while I was writing that article, I initially included that she won the Malta Businesswoman of the Year Award, then went looking for a better source and ended up removing it because I couldn't find one, and not even realizing that it wasn't the same person until your edit just now. I appreciate the assist though! DanCherek (talk) 16:37, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
For consistency and connecting with the treatment of women's suffrage prisoners??
I am happy to help categorising articles for the women imprisoned if it is needed. Kaybeesquared (talk) 10:59, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
Oh thats a tricky question. Freedom fighter or terrorist? As you know Jessie (and Annie?) had explosives which puts her on the heavy end of the suffragette spectrum. I can see that criminologists would be interested in her but she doesnt go on my list of criminals. I guess she would "have a criminal record" as I don't thing UKgov have ever given a pardon.... although they did create an amnesty (in effect) in 1914. ... in summary .. dont know! ((I'm currently looking at Land Army leaders. Suffragette leaders like Katherine Courtauld went to work with Louise Wilkins to create small holdings for women who served in WW1.)) All the best. Hi Jujiang, the article has improved a great deal and would be a good contender if it had been created in the last seven days - sadly its now quite old. More importantly you have learned a lot about this process. A short 1500 character new article with just four or five references and ideally a picture is a good contender and I think you could create another one. My interest is in articles about notable women but you should be able to create another article in user space and ask another editor to review it before you post it at DYK. Hope this advice helps ... we do need more Chinese articles. Victuallers (talk) 08:02, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for your recent 'thank yous' for work I did some time ago (eleven years!). It reminds me that the footprints one leaves on Wikipedia and Commons are basically indelible, but also that a helpful edit can be appreciated long afterwards. I have not been as active on Wikipedia as I once was for two reasons - other projects have gotten in the way and also a sense that Wikipedia is getting more bureaucratic than it was. Maybe that is not fair. Maybe it is that the rules it has always had are simply being enforced with more rigour now. I thinking of DYK, for example, which was a lot simpler to do in the past. I understand why the process is more cumbersome but I wonder whether really interesting stuff gets passed over because editors find it too exhausting to follow the procedures. I also had an edit reverted recently (Lawnchair Larry) because it was seen as original research. That really turned me off. I though it helped to understand the guy; put his adventure into context. I chose not to pursue the argument, because I had also added the information to the general article on cluster ballooning, where it is in a safer place. So, I will continue to do the odd edit, adding value from time to time, but I am generally treading softly these days. Thank you again, and for all that you do as both an editor and administrator. Hi Roger. 6 years, 4 months, 4 days ago, you left a message on my talkpage regarding Wikimania 2015 submission. My turn. The deadline for Wikimania Virtual 2021 submissions is in 3 days. Yes, short notice, my bad, but it just dawned on me to give it some thought. Would you be interested in doing a round-table conversation with me (and perhaps others if there's interest) regarding 'moving the needle' at Women in Red? As usual, the door is open; you don't have to knock. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:13, 15 June 2021 (UTC) Sure I will push the door open :-) ~2323 days later to submission - need input or just turn up? Suggest "Killing off Women in Red: 6 years, 100s of editathons and editors, thousands of new articles - How is gender equality achievable?" - I think there is an answer to this, but it requires the kind of consensus that a Wikimania could deliver. I will create a skeletal doc and mail a link... Victuallers (talk) 17:10, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
Great to see you both preparing for this. Maybe it would be worth mentioning that the project has been so popular that the tools for including both active and inactive participants have broken down and that many of our popular Wikidata redlists can no longer be updated as they are thought to require too many computing resources. Despite strong discouragement (and the risk of updates being replaced by the bots), contributors have begun deleting blue links (although they have not been able to add new redlinks). It could also be pointed out that while the objective of WiR is to create new articles on women, especially biographies, we have never had so many articles reaching GA standard and or so many enhanced images of women and their works appearing on Wikipedia's main page. Our extended meetups have attracted the attention they deserve with extensive coverage of topics including Black Lives Matter and Women's rights. Last but not least, thanks to the encouragement of our late friend Yolinda, we have never had so many DYKs based on WiR creations, sometimes with over 100 a month. And thanks to Humaniki, we can now look for details of progress by language, occupation, time periods, etc., etc. 19% for the English wiki might seem pretty low but at least we now have some 350,000 biographies of women, documenting their contributions to society today and yesterday. Additional support would allow us to move forward more quickly.--Ipigott (talk) 13:32, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestions, Ipigott. Certainly, all/any of these would be good to include. Once we are informed if our session is accepted, we can get started on a slidedeck and sort it out. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:48, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
Nice summary Ian aka Ipigott. I'm keen that we spread the credit wide and thick. We have been discussing how to get not only the core team members et al but also the huge pile of volunteering contributing effort included. I was thinking of ...
31 languages, fr: and it: and ca: and eu: and .... 5 continents! How may countries?
in 200+ virtual editathons,
dozens of in person editathons (e.g. >60 in Scotland),
the stars who created an article a day,
the Pinterest, Twitter, FaceBook, Instagram etc work increasing our profile,
the DYK, GA, FA, Women in Green activists
the supporting wikiprojects like Women in Sport, Women Artists, Women Scientists, Women Scientists, Antarctic Women et al
the gnomes who ensure that wikiprojects, templates, and redlists get updated
the bean counters who ensure that we see our challenge and understand our progress
800 en:wiki editors in US/UK/Aus/NZ/Nigeria/, and
350,000 articles - amazing - that's over twice the number of footballers on wiki! More seriously - isnt that about 40% more than when we started? I remember a figure of about 260K articles at the start
I know this misses out hundreds, but have I missed out a whole section? I'm hoping to use a list like this to shape the work. Definitely a slide deck and maybe a video or "a paper". Any additions above would be gratefully received. Victuallers (talk) 13:35, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
Women in Europe contest now with centenarians[edit]
Hi there, Victuallers, and thanks for participating in the contest. You might be interested in covering one or more of the centenarians in Peaceray's detailed redlist. We have decided to target them for the remainder of the contest as all but one are from Europe. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 12:30, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

Hello! Your submission of Gemma Collis-McCann at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) at your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. I actually found your written article very interesting, but it does, in my opinion, require quite a bit of expansion in order to get a 'yes' from me for inclusion in WP:DYK. If expanded and meets the criteria for WP:GA, I'd be happy to support. Textualism (talk) 11:31, 29 June 2021 (UTC)
Hi, apologies if I did cause any offence on my recent edit of Gemma Collis-McCann, switching from 'was' to 'is', the rest of the sentence didn't end up making sense, but wanted to convey in the first paragraph that she's alive. I realise the article is new and improving. I'll step away and hope no hard feelings. All the best, Textualism (talk) 11:59, 29 June 2021 (UTC)
Hey, thanks for rescuing the article Nilima Arun Kshirsagar. Unfortunately, the hook now doesn’t represent any of the article text! Can I ask what the next steps should be? It seems a worthy article for DYK. - Aussie Article Writer (talk) 17:32, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
Finding a hook should be easier - although the original one with the covid-19 link would be very hooky. I was just looking around for a picture. "File:Amphotericin B new.svg" would work but I prefer "File:Liposomas articulo liberación activos.jpg". I think its more relevant but I have no idea about liposome delivery and what this diagram illustrates, maybe the nominator knows Victuallers (talk) 22:38, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
Can I just express my real appreciation for your help on that article. Superb collaborative editing, and makes working on articles here all worthwhile! And also your help on Sunday Lecture Society! Your edits there made the article so much better. - Aussie Article Writer (talk) 23:54, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi Roger. Together with ARoseWolf, we are trying to put together a comprehensive list of activities in support of women's coverage on Wikipedia. We have started with a list of wikiprojects on the English Wikipedia and will possibly continue with activities on Meta and in other language versions of Wikipedia. Are there any important initiatives in the UK we have missed - or indeed elsewhere in relation to the EN wiki? (This has also been under discussion on the WiR talk page.)--Ipigott (talk) 11:00, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
Sure I have a draft I prepared for the Wikimania thing I'm doing with Rosie. I will copy it to the talkpage. Victuallers (talk) 12:24, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, that sounds great. I hadn't realized you were working on this in parallel. Maybe you can also make use of some of the details we've been putting together.--Ipigott (talk) 14:48, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
DYK for Kenya women's national volleyball team[edit]
Hi, Victuallers. First, I just wanted to thank you for the many times you've been kind enough to offer guidance or a morale boost to me re: the bios I've created for Women in Red. Wikipedia can be a bruising place for anyone researching and writing new articles, regardless of their level of editing experience on/off Wikipedia, and I just wanted to let you know that your input has helped. Second, I received an email alert letting me know that Eliza Kennedy Smith, one of the most recent bios that I created for WiR, was nominated for a DYK, which was heartening news. Unfortunately, when I checked the nomination data, I noticed something that seems odd. A second Wikipedian was listed as having created the bio with me, which is incorrect. I researched, wrote, and posted the bio myself, and was in the middle of editing it to bring it up to C-class or better when the other individual began editing it. Since, I'm not sure what the process is for DYK, I wanted to reach out to ask you if it's a normal procedure for a DYK nomination to list an article editor as a creator if he/she/they didn't actually create the article? Thanks in advance for your response. 47thPennVols (talk) 22:56, 25 July 2021 (UTC)
Hi, came here to thank Victuallers for the QPQ donation for this DYK. I seem to recall that non-creator nominators didn't used to need it, but as it's written today it sounded like I'd need to do one. So thank you for bailing me out there!
Since I'm here, @47thPennVols: It's routine to acknowledge multiple editors who have contributed to a DYK-worthy article. I haven't seen a hard and fast threshold articulated, so it's mostly up to judgment. The other editor's contributions have been more cleanup than adding original content, but there was enough of it for me. I intended for the nomination to recognize the good work that went into the article. Hope you'll keep it up. Lagrange613 02:41, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
You are doing great work @47thPennVols and Lagrange613: - I really like the article, but credit isn't a finite resource. Its a cake that gets bigger as you divide it. As you say "when the other individual began editing it"... that process is what makes Wikipedia work and "that person" is contributing even if its only to their own training. IMO we need to celebrate and thank others who contribute to our work. Its a compliment that they chose your work to complement with their time and to to assist with. Surely we need to thank that person in the same light as the person who nominated your article for DYK? Victuallers (talk) 07:15, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
Thank you both for responding and for your kindness and support. Since it's the first time one of my articles has ever been nominated for a DYK, I was just curious about the process. 47thPennVols (talk) 08:05, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
The credit's are as suggested by the nominator (you can nominate your own work or look around to see who else needs to be recognised) - frequently just one person, but brilliant when it is two or three. (I did note that your collaborator was not always as civil as might be). Keep up the great work! Victuallers (talk) 09:08, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
Hi. I need to change the time. Can we move it an hour earlier or an hour later? Thanks. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:56, 5 August 2021 (UTC) hour later Victuallers (talk) 21:17, 5 August 2021 (UTC) Sent updated invite. --Rosiestep (talk) 05:08, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
@Indy beetle: Nice work - I have tweeted your article at @wikiwomeninred. Two out of seven in 24 hours isnt bad... and I'm a "white bloke" ... so it seems its all my fault. Not sure I agree with the narrative of the piece (ie. lack of diversity is due to too many white anglophone blokes editing - after all we have created some nice articles on dinosaurs but only a few of us are actually dinosaurs), but the objective is great. Victuallers (talk) 11:30, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
@Abishe: ... and it looks like someone has finished it! Victuallers (talk) 07:28, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
Haha, I was honestly not thinking about creating articles for African women activists yesterday as I was hoping to create biographies about Paralympic athletes as 2020 Summer Paralympics is just around the corner. This was not the first time I worked on related to African activists as I have created few articles before. Well the issue was it was not easy to find proper reliable references but thankfully Global Citizen had some info about those activists which was very much useful for me. Anyway you deserve a credit Victuallers for your great work in contributing to WIR as well as Indy beetle. Abishe (talk) 08:59, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

Hello! I did have one idea for a possible US partner, namely a new college student group at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. User AlwaysInRed recently sent some kind thank you notes to WiR and related editathons mentioning that their group would be using the redlists for their new group’s monthly meetups at the WPI Library and online, described at their grant proposal here. Perhaps they would be interested in serving as a base for an online US event, especially given their school’s historical focus on STEM? (For press it would be a nice fit.) As they are brand-new, I am picturing a need for participation by some “old hands” :-) but perhaps collaborating would feel more feasible to some who don’t feel up to taking it on alone. Just an idea—in the spirit of brainstorming! Innisfree987 (talk) 23:02, 11 September 2021 (UTC)
Sounds like a great idea (Barnstar in the post) I would anticipate that @AlwaysInRed: may find support from existing Women in Red editors. Hopefully pinging him/her might reveal their enthusiasm for helping us to address the gendergap. Victuallers (talk) 08:57, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi! I love your work and I just started using QRpedia in Croatia. I noticed that message that was given to people who have unsupported contente languages on QRpedia URL resolution, does not include link to other available languages and I wonder if you could maybe add that sometimes soon? Thank you in advance! --Zblace (talk) 18:54, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
Hi @Zblace: do tell me more about your use of QRpediain Croatia. Is Serbian the first language, are you using it for a Wikitown or a GLAM? Have you made the press? Links to other languages you say - that depends, which language?. We had some issues with Welsh in the early days as Android didnt recognise it as a language and others can be quite long when they are using a Latin alphabet. I have thoughts about how to solve this but it would require us to develop a QRpedia 2.0 which would be couple of weeks of work.

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. Constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, but a recent edit of yours has an edit summary that appears to be inadequate, inaccurate, or inappropriate. The summaries are helpful to people browsing an article's history, so it is important that you use edit summaries that accurately tell other editors what you did. Like you I try not to waste keystrokes but if I had something to discuss with you then I would make the effort instead of rudely reverting edits. There is uncivil and it is discourteous. Please do not not do this again.Victuallers (talk) 19:46, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
Continuing to use false or misleading edit summaries is considered disruptive editing, and you could be blocked. It's nothing to do with wasting key strokes, nor is it a matter of what you think is discourteous. ...discospinstertalk 19:51, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
Sorry I find your approach uncivil and discourteous. Please do not not do this again. 19:52, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
Glad to see this has got off to a good start with over 20 STEM bios from Australia and New Zealand. I've also seen a few more than those tagged and listed, possibly from less experienced users. Have you any records of new contributors? I would be happy to help them along.--Ipigott (talk) 09:32, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks Ian, great idea Victuallers (talk) 12:21, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
As far as I can see, there were four new members of Women in Red, two of them in connection with ADA. Only one was a complete newcomer. I don't know how many others registered on Wikipedia and have not been able to find any lists. Perhaps you can help. I'm glad you were successful in attracting so many new articles but we may have to review how to attract new members.--Ipigott (talk) 10:16, 13 October 2021 (UTC)
Four - great, but there were dozens of others. To identify new members then I think we need to just? pass a cursor over the 77 editors that the dashboard recorded. Its not foolproof as not everyone clicked it to record their contributions. We should be able to see how long they have been Wikipedians for tosort out newbies although I know some were returning editors who may have returned to editting because of the event.. There was a strong message to join us I think from each session, but out top priority was to get them contributing and to click the dashboard. The opportunity we have is to send a barnstar/cup of tea to all our new contributors inviting them to join Women in Red. We also have WIR leads in Ghana, Pakistan and Kenya and they are pure gold IMO for the project. They will know from eventbrite the email of everyone who attended (or said they would) and we could do something with those lists if our event leaders are willing to help. Victuallers (talk) 15:41, 13 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for suggesting the dashboard. Over the next day or two, I'll go through them more carefully and try to encourage some of them to join WiR.--Ipigott (talk) 15:39, 14 October 2021 (UTC)
We met today and I tried to ask about everyone sending a follow up email to all who signed up (c.50 in England) to tell them to sign up and find an editing buddy at WIR. However my temperamental internet ended my meeting at about this point. We didn't get the New York Times but we got a top 30 NY podcast and about 5 other interviews/thinkpieces in NZ and UK. Victuallers (talk) 16:33, 14 October 2021 (UTC)
That sounds fantastic. Sending out emails seems to be a good idea. I'll also start looking at them more closely myself. Membership of WiR is not really a priority. The important thing is that they should be encouraged to contribute editing.--Ipigott (talk) 05:53, 15 October 2021 (UTC)
I think I've more or less completed what I can for the time being. I've been going through the list of participants on the dashboard, concentrating on newcomers and editors with little experience. Those who appear to deserve special attention include Bionicbean, Marinemud, CurrawongEdits, Kemboh, Raychep, Abdulahi A and Agoni Abraham. Maybe it's also a good idea to alert all those who added their names to the dashboard list but did not make any contributions. It may be possible to encourage some of them to start editing.--Ipigott (talk) 12:30, 16 October 2021 (UTC)
I have given some attention to those editors and I have made a nomination for the Ghanaian ambassador at DYK... hopefully this may assist our cause. Victuallers (talk) 09:38, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, Roger. Your encouragement is really useful. While I'm here, I see that PC Bain, who joined for the Manchester event a couple of years ago and has a colourful account of the event on her LinkedIn page, is close to creating her fifth article. I think she now probably has enough experience to move it to article space herself. If not, you might lend a hand. With all her competence in indexing, she could be a really useful member of Women in Red.--Ipigott (talk) 12:41, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
And I've just seen we also have Agnès Kraidy which I will expand tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 20:29, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

In addition to the DYK message, which was a template and so rather formal, I just wanted to say hello and hope you're well! I haven't been to a London meetup in a very long time and I miss the community and hope you're keeping okay! Zeromonk (talk) 10:48, 18 October 2021 (UTC)
Yes, I created both of them. For some reason, the translation template kept one version of the article before I published the second one (I'm using different browsers on different PC's, home/office). They should be merged, Des Cabrils is the more current version of the article. Issue is that the "station" goes by both names; it's not a big place so I assume the locals just call it Cabrils. I think I'm familiar with merging articles, let me see and I'll get back to you here in a bit. Oaktree b (talk) 19:56, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
I've read the help article on how to merge them, it's confusing. What I'd like to see happen is the Les Cabrils station no longer existing and pointing to Des Cabrils. The Des Cabrils is the more complete article. Are you able to merge them, or point me to where I can ask to do this? Oaktree b (talk) 20:03, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
The usual problem is getting the attribution right but not a big problem here as its all you. If you can get one of them correct then you or I, can edit the other and replace everything with a redirect. I have admin stuff but not required for this one. The DYK nom can get a bit awkward if that needs renaming. Victuallers (talk) 22:20, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for your help with Joan Ringelheim entry[edit]
Hi Victuallers!! Just a quick thank you for your help with the Joan Ringelheim entry!! I'm still very much a newbie and learning how best to do these things. It is also always challenging finding ways to properly underscore a person's impact. Grateful for your help! Mononoke99 (talk) 14:00, 30 October 2021 (UTC)
Useful to see how many editors are attracted by your plea for help. Looks like a good article, but beware, you cannot cut and paste into Wikipedia. Not even a sentence unless its short, it has quote marks AND clear attribution. If you want help then shout at www.womeninred.org. Do you have or can you beg a picture of her from someone who owns a pic of her (a copy of a photo and "its OK" wont work). Victuallers (talk) 15:13, 30 October 2021 (UTC)
Hi Victuallers! Yes, was wonderful to see how many folks came to assist. Very grateful of the support and help. Will note citation preferences in Wikipedia for the future. Thanks again! And for your text box add and the pictures someone found. It really means a lot. There was a good struggle to establish this line of research and my fellow scholars and colleagues are very touched to see a Wikipedia entry. Mille mercis! Hello Victuallers!! You really are wonderful, taking the time. Much appreciated. Mononoke99 (talk) 12:47, 31 October 2021 (UTC) Its good work. Marion Kaplin is all over Wikipedia as a cited source. You have a few tricks to learn that will make you (even) more productive. Victuallers (talk) 12:52, 31 October 2021 (UTC) Hi Victuallers! Yes! I saw the creation of a wikidata page seemed to be important. Tho not sure yet how that happens. And how it came about that I could actually move it to accepted. So much to learn!! Looking forward to the process (and apologizing in advance for all the mistakes I'm sure to make!) Mononoke99 (talk) 14:51, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

I hereby declare that you are an Honorary Australian. Thank you for all the work you've been doing to make Aussie women visible on Wikipedia. Oronsay (talk) 15:50, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
Why thank you! As you can see above it could be that a few will not be quite so visible as loading pics seems to be getting trickier. However, A very wobbly curtsey. My son-in-law is an Aussie so he should be impressed. Victuallers (talk) 16:00, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
Uploading images of very recently deceased individuals has always been tricky, it's not suddenly got "trickier". There are plenty of images of recently deceased people out there, you just have to do the leg-work to get them appropriately licensed, just as I have done on a few occasions, so as to not abuse the fair use of non-free images. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 16:15, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
@The Rambling Man: I think trickier is, in this case, a subjective view... and IMO it has... and as for leg-work, again that has to be judged against the amount of leg work actually done and not by the amount that you might imagine I could, or has not, been done. For that leg work I plead guilty. When I find an image that is free to use then I add it to the hundreds I ve found and its clear that work was done. When I fail to find a free to use image then some say I have to "do the leg work", but no one yet has ever asked what work has actually been done. Why do you assume its insufficient? What evidence do you have? Where is the bar? Proving that you have failed after numerous tries is very difficult to record or for others to appreciate. You could find hundreds of my failed attempts on YouTube or Flickr to find images but they might interfere with assumptions.Victuallers (talk) 17:08, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
I'm afraid that in general, if you're dealing with someone who has been obviously in the public eye, just assuming it's too much trouble to go looking hard for a few months for a free alternative is simply not good enough. It's not in the spirit of fair use and it's disappointing to think that someone who advocates for Wikipedia to those who know not much about it would adopt such a curious position. But there you go. Have you emailed the owner of the photo at Flickr, for example? Have you gone to the myriad publications who have images of her and requested they reduce their copyright? The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 17:40, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
@The Rambling Man: I think we need to disagree over this. The idea that anyone would "work hard for a couple of months" is a ridiculous bar. Even then how would you know? I may have been working hard for a couple of months, did you ask? As it is we had two experienced researchers working hard for about five or six hours and then less so for a couple of days... which is a level of effort that would surprise many, but who asks? We have contacted hundreds of people about the article. Some would say "Have you emailed the owner of the photo at Flickr, for example?" with an assumed level of doubt. Well yes I did and surprisingly after two days of discussion we have her informed consent. I doubt that work[ing] hard for a couple of months would have found many more. It looks as if we will have this level of discussion again and I would appreciate it if you ask about the level of effort before proposing deletion. I can see that you could just look to see if I had done anything else of Wikipedia for 9 weeks if the bar is going to be "working hard for a couple of months". Has anyone done this? did they stop editting and working to achieve this? Till next time, thank you for not working hard on image sourcing - we do need your valuable contributions at DYK. Victuallers (talk) 09:15, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
I didn't propose deletion. And I don't follow most of the rest of your ramble. I'm just glad that you, an admin, are now aware of a clearly worded guideline which hopefully you will comply with going forward. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 09:20, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
Thanks I got confused by seeing "six months" and a "couple of months of hard work" which I am very pleased, as an admin, are not mentioned at all. Keep rambling. Victuallers (talk) 16:43, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
I think you need to take a break or at least start to pay more attention. Either way, please don't start giving tuition to others on how to use fair use images on Wikipedia. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 19:02, 28 November 2021 (UTC)

Hi, hope you're well. I'm drafting an article on the Caslon type foundry and am thinking about how it can connect to the Elizabeth Caslon article. Just to warn you that the typeface you show in the article was actually commissioned by the second Elizabeth Caslon (née Rowe), this is explained by Hansard in Typographica on page 352 and Reed-Johnson on page 247. The NYPL dates the Caslon specimen 1785 but this is a confusion as it's a 1785 specimen bound up with later sheets; the Eliz. Caslon's New Pica sheet is one of these. This is explained by James Mosley in his book on British type specimens on page 27. He dates it to 1796-9, so does Paul Barnes.
My draft is at Draft:Caslon type foundry, I'm hoping to have it finished over Christmas. Feedback welcomed! Blythwood (talk) 22:58, 17 December 2021 (UTC)
@Blythwood: Nice work! Looks ready for main space now. Looks like you did more thorough research than I did. Do feel free to correct my error over the wrong Elizabeth. Not many women in history so the second Elizabeth maybe merits her own article. Ping me when it goes to main space. DYK?? Victuallers (talk) 08:58, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
Great, I've made the edits. It's live now! I really hope it's worth the wait, one of those things where I slowly came to realise that the topic was worth a full article. DYK is on the agenda, hopefully a GA nom too. Getting an expansion of the Vincent Figgins article to GA was a lot of fun to do and made me realise I had the materials to do the topic justice. Moral lesson:John Vanderlyn was an American painter who studied in Paris, and his life-sized Ariadne Asleep on the Island of Naxos was one of the first large nudes exhibited in the United States. Peddling the poison as well as the cure, this overtly sensuous work was presented to the public as a moral lesson on the consequences of lascivious behavior. Visible in the distance is the ship of Princess Ariadne's secret lover, Theseus, for whom she has betrayed her people by helping him to escape the Labyrinth and slay the Minotaur. Ariadne's bliss will come to an end when she awakens from her post-coital reverie, only to discover that the faithless Theseus has sailed away without her.

Disambiguation link notification for January 4[edit]
An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Gabrièle Buffet-Picabia, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Hans Richter.
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

I noticed in your revison dated 09:17,10 January 2022 of the page on Karen Ferguson, you inserted the phrase "their (sic) were plans to reduce the minimum pensions guarenteed (sic) to pensioners."
"Guaranteed minimum pensions" is a legal concept in the UK that doesn't exist per se in the United States. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 addresses issues such as how corporations must fund their pension funds, but it doesn't contain any requirements for pension payment amounts, or even any requirement for employers to provide pensions at all.
Did you have a source for this change, or was it an assumption on your part? I don't mean this as a personal attack, by the way; my only interest is in making the article as accurate as possible.
Please respond on my talk page. Ormewood (talk) 19:20, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Hello! Your submission of Tatiana Saunders at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) at your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. The cropped photo is not used in the article, however, nor is the mention of equal pay made in the main hook actually in the article. My preference for hook is ALT1, though, and if this article is run without a photo on DYK, then that point is moot. In that case, I'd be happy to pass this nomination as good to go. Hello! I saw a post about Bianca Baptiste on the Women in Red instagram - it turns out the image in the article isn't of Baptiste, but is of her team-mate Siobhan Wilson. I've moved the image off her biography, put a comment on the DYK and requested file name changes on Commons, but please could you double check that I've done those things OK? Thanks Lajmmoore (talk) 17:08, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
Thank you - its a tricky thing identifying footballers when all you get is numbers which are maybe right. I will fix on commons. Victuallers (talk) 17:10, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
Hi, Hope all is well! Does women in red have a template text that instructs people on how to upload an image of themselves to commons? I talked to Beth Parks and she said she would be willing to upload an image of herself, and I'd just like to send her the correct information. Thanks Eddie891TalkWork 13:43, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
Timely Eddie = I was just thinking that we need to organise one for another project. The best route is for Beth to get an existing web site to change its policy and mount a free to use picture of her. Most organisations needlessly claim copyright as you probably know. She is Editor-in-chief of a major journal - what a wonderful gift it would be if that journal started making pictures of their authors free to use!!!!! I would arrange a unobtainium plated Wikipedia barnstar and a thankyou letter signed by wiki royalty!.These instructions may help. Other possibilities are for one of Beth's mates who has a blue ticked Twitter account to publish a photo they took of her and to make the license crystal clear as cc-by-sa. Flickr will also allow you to specify an attribution license and YouTube will allow you to publish with a "Creative Commons" license. Once this is done then you or I can provide some protection from over-enthusiastic commons gate keepers as we move the image into Wikimedia Commons ensuring that its provenance is well recorded. Obviously if Beth loads not only a picture of herself but also photos she took of other notable women - then it looks more like a donation (and less like self-promotion which gatekeepers love to delete). HTH. Victuallers (talk) 16:24, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
Who are the undiscovered heroes? It easy to reach for Marie Curie and Emmeline Pankhurst as notable women, but who are the hidden heroes. Again there are people like Rosalind Franklin, Bell etc. I have listed some of these below. Less obvious are the people Women in Red have discovered who have less well known but interest stories worthy of more interest. They are in the second list. Anyone is welcome to add to these lists.

I just promoted Template:Did you know nominations/Peninah Musyimi with the image so that it could at least run for International Women's Month. No one moved it to the special occasions area for International Women's Day or else I would have promoted it for that day. I didn't even know the nomination existed until last night. SL93 (talk) 23:12, 12 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks @SL93:. Not sure we (ie en:wiki) did our best this year for IWD. We ran one set of hooks on the day when two would have been possible (and then switched to two a couple of days later) and the featured article on the day was about a species of deer. I know we are all doing our best and what we are doing is very good. Its not your fault and not many will notice. We did disappoint some editors I think. However Women in Red cancelled some things because Ukraine has rearranged priorities. Thank you as always. Victuallers (talk) 10:46, 13 March 2022 (UTC)
I was wondering, Roger, if you could help with Germaine Bailac. It's been hanging around for quite a time after been nominated by Gerda Arendt but now apparently for some reason needs a "full review", whatever that means. I don't know why but there so often seem to be problems when my articles are submitted to DYK. As you seem to be one of the DYK experts, perhaps you could help to sort things out. I too have found the main page coverage of women disappointing this year but until I read your message above, I had not realized it was because of cancellations by Women in Red. If you are interested in posting more women during the remainder of the month, you might like to look at Francia Russell, the first article written by a completely new contributor.--Ipigott (talk) 12:36, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
@Ipigott: It does seem that DYK seems to have quite a few nominations that are left hanging. Gerda Arendt's review of Gloria Rojas has been in a similar state for ten days and that review needs to be complete before Germaine Bailac can be ticked. The impassioned debate at Germaine Bailac about one hook v. another doesn't invite a reviewer to assist. However I'm happy to help. Maybe we can unlock Gloria Rojas? Victuallers (talk) 13:07, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, Roger, but I'm afraid the problems involved are far too complex for me to understand. Why should Gloria Rojas have anything to do with Germaine Bailac? If Gerda agrees, it's probably best just to scrap Bailac as I can see from your reply that it has already caused problems with the hook and now seems to be causing even more. The only reason I suggested to Gerda that she might like to promote it in the first place was that she indicated there was a distinct shortage of articles for Women's Month. I also suggested others but these seem to have been even more difficult to accommodate. All this explains why I do not nominate articles for DYK (including my own creations), even if I'm always happy when others do so (as dear Yoninah so often did). Hope I don't sound too grumpy about this but it can be frustrating. I really admire editors like Lajmmoore who appear to have mastered the technique. Did you have a chance to look at Francia Russell?--Ipigott (talk) 16:15, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
In order to get an approval, then you need to show that you have approved another (a "QPQ"). Gerda says she approved Gloria Rojas and she almost did this 10 days ago but its now awaiting resolution as she never completed the assessment. HTH. Victuallers (talk) 16:31, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
There were A LOT of tears at the beginning of doing DYKs, @Ipigott - I didn't get it for a long time. There was one dreadful week where I'd proposed a DYK that got passed and it then turned out was beyond the laws of physics! I'll try and keep an eye out for your pages - or feel free to give me a nudge if you've worked on someone especially fascinating! Lajmmoore (talk) 20:10, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
Ipigott For what it's worth I'm also happy to help with DYK submissions, especially if related to WiR. I agree the process can be frustrating, lately I have some energy for it again. Collaboration might be the best way forward to prevent burnout, I'm enjoying the collabs with Victuallers, right now we have Template:Did you know nominations/Vanita Jagdeo Borade and Template:Did you know nominations/Arti Rana on the go! Mujinga (talk) 10:14, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
Mujinga: That's a kind offer. I'm not so much interested in including my own articles on DYK (unless they are needed to fill gaps) but it is encouraging for new contributors to see that their early efforts have been recognized. That's why I suggested Francia Russell above. Maybe you would be interested in taking a look.--Ipigott (talk) 10:30, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
I had a look, unfortunately I'm struggling to think of something hooky there Mujinga (talk) 20:46, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
Hellos I've put Olive Morris up for FAC and sadly had to take away two photos before doing so because the National Archives seem to have messed up their uploads (you can read the saga at the peer review). (Where?) I thought I'd drop you a line because you are good at finding pix and I see the image we have of Olive herself was uploaded by you. Can you let me know if you know any more about the provenance of that one? Probably not right, it seems there is a real dearth of available pics of British Black Power women activists from the 1970s like Liz Obi, Elouise Edwards, Stella Dadzie, Altheia Jones-LeCointe, Beverley Bryan and so on. Cheers! Mujinga (talk) 21:19, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
I devoted quite a bit of time to finding an image of her and I remember that thousands saw that when it was a DYK. I can't remember why that was deleted... I do think I felt that we were destroying our own riches. I suspect there would be more pain than gain to source another image. If I wanted to get a pic then I'd go to Brixton and beg. Good support for her there but they don't understand wiki's (silly) licencing. Victuallers (talk) 22:26, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
Yeah I agree it's hard and probably won't work out, thanks for the help. Sorry I didn't link the peer review before, here is the relevant discussion -Wikipedia:Peer_review/Olive_Morris/archive1#Pix. In short, I've tried but not got anywhere. If RoC reply then that might help, they didn't get back to met yet to an email I sent a couple of weeks ago, not sure how active they are now. As I recall the DYK/googledoodle thing was related to a pic of the mural dedicated to her in Brixton, which was deleted at commons because of the freedom of panorama stuff - I agree it's a bit silly because a mural is in my view same as other public art. So it goes! Mujinga (talk) 10:09, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi! Another photo question. Currently, the Fannie B. Damon (1857–1939) biography doesn't contain a photo. I found this one of her in a 1995 book, but there's no info about when/where the photo was first published. Interesting work but as we discussed we use AI (google translate) to create many rough drafts already. DKY for Racial segregation in the United Kingdom[edit]
Hi Victuallers. I've had a couple of comments on this DYK that I've found a bit frustrating and I was wondering if you could please look and advise me? The hook is not a double-negative as claimed, and I think the article copy is fine (have clarified the lead just to be sure, and removed a vague tag that imo was unnecessary). The expansion to me is evident even with the blanking of the history, and my understanding that was a change from redirect to article constituted an expansion rather than new article in terms of DYK rules (though very happy to be corrected and change this on the nomination, it just feels a bit like that shouldn't be a barrier because either way it meets the criteria of being new/bigger. Would be very grateful if you could let me know what I could do to make this work better! Zeromonk (talk) 09:46, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
My inclination is to wave things through at DYK, however this is a substantial expansion on a sensitive subject. Missing out that the US troops were segregated because of American laws (that were tolerated in the UK) because that is how the US Army works creates the idea that the segregation of the US troops was a British idea. Many of these anecdotes are dealt with more fully elsewhere. Maybe use the template named "main"? Finding out that a colour bar in the 1950s was illegal surprises me - under what law? I find I understood less after reading the article. Could these ideas be explained? HTH Victuallers (talk) 15:11, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi Ian, I am where I can but the work is driven by photos of "MP"s ... and they don't usually have an article in any language. I have added a couply where there was a Spanish version. .... and yes its much more interesting. They do take politicians to court on trumped up/political/corruption charges but they do seem to take some notice and not just mumble "truly and deeply sorry for what ever I appear to have done, but it wasn't me if you squint at it from this angle through these shaded specs ... so lets move on". Just a reminder that people are not filed directly in Category:Politicians if they're already filed in one or more subcategories, such as Category:Members of the National Assembly of Ecuador. The world has had hundreds of thousands, possibly even well into the millions, of politicians throughout history — so it's not useful for the parent category Category:Politicians to be a one-stop list of everybody on earth who was ever in politics, and instead all politicians are subcategorized by nationality and/or role while Category:Politicians is supposed to only parent the subcategories, while not directly containing any individual people itself. Somehow a correction needs to be made, perhaps with an apology, as the image did not correspond to the person linked. (cc theleekycauldron)--Ipigott (talk) 11:46, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
I now see Tbhotch moved the page. Not sure how to deal with this. Maybe the DYK ran correctly but the DYK archive certainly needs attention.--Ipigott (talk) 12:41, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for spotting this Ipigott. We did get some picky points raised when it was on the main page so it must have been accessible to some. One of the points was about her name lacking an accent which is may be the reason it was moved. The stats should tell us how many saw it and with what name (I think). Victuallers (talk) 15:29, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
@Victuallers and theleekycauldron: I wanted to follow up on yesterday's Errors in "Did you know ..." discussion, which I didn't get a chance to reply to before it got deleted. My request was not about fixing the hyperlink in the source article. In fact, had you checked the article in question, you would have noticed that I had already fixed that hyperlink in the source article a few minutes before asking my question (Special:Diff/1093107824). Had I needed help to edit the Sofía Sánchez article itself, I would have of course posted on the relevant talk page. My request was to change the hyperlink in the hook itself, which I understand only administrators can do. Is there a reason why you both suggested that I could have done that myself? Or did you just not notice that the bad hyperlink was in the hook? --JECE (talk) 19:34, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
@JECE: My read of your comment, if memory serves, was that you wrote "in the Sofía Sánchez article"- so I just assumed you meant the article. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/they) 19:36, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
Me too - although I was also just about to go to sleep. Errors are important but I dont feel that we get too excited about errors in articles at DYK. They are new and we should not be surprised to find that we have errors even though they have been overchecked. Hope its all fixed now. I think the hook was changed a few hours later as it mixed up all the stats. (see above). Victuallers (talk) 22:20, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
The rephrasing part of DYK is out of hand. I didn't realize how bad it was until I saw this at ERRORS. I have no idea why a rewording and not an error was brought up there, especially when Gerda's hook was completely fine. SL93 (talk) 09:04, 16 June 2022 (UTC)
@SL93: I thought I was just crying outside the door of a hard line poetry society. These are not Haikus, but hooks that thousands of people find interesting everyday for a millisecond before they click to find out more. They never notice that the hook has been re-authored several times, but the author of the hook just feels that someone keeps kidnapping their children on the pretext of tidying their hair. I'm sure I could have phrased this idea better (but it would be very bad manners for anyone to change this text - unless its a genuine error!). Victuallers (talk) 09:18, 16 June 2022 (UTC)
100% agree with the sentiments expressed here, it can frustrating as someone who has written something, collaborated on changes and then gone through a review process to then find unilateral changes have been made which in some cases are not an improvement. my response to this is to step away from DYK for a while then return, but i don't think that it solves anything. in any case keep up the good work both of you and cheers SL93 for the sidenote at Template:Did you know nominations/De Vloek! Please have a look at the too close paraphrasing and borderline copyvio at that article: verbatim translations are copyvio. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 13:34, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
They would be if the source wasn't openly licensed, in which case verbatim translations are not (even borderline) copyvio. Which is certainly where most of it came from. Victuallers (talk) 15:10, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

I did have a look, I'm not too keen on getting involved at AfD, I'm more interested in improving the article. I think I'm pretty neat the epicentre of fixing the Wikipedia gender gap. I worry that the sources are receptive to the techology but the Wikipedia article seems to imply that the ambitions of the work are the same as the achievement. The source I looked said that historically Wiki articles continued and failed to remove gender bias it was a huge problem. And it is and that the translations offered might HELP human editors fix the problem. The claims made here seem to be a bit journalistic - can you really imagine that an AI tool is going to translate an article about a native American woman from Arabic into Chinese AND also fix the gender bias in the text? The cultural mismatches would be enormous eben if the translation was perfect .... and none of the sources imply that the translation between unusual languages is anything much better that a good draft. Now on the subject of improvent. The lede should explain why this person is important. What is notable about "Angela Fan is a research scientist at Meta AI in Paris focusing on machine translation". That is not notable. Tell the reader why she is notable. Did she invent machine translation? Is the AI that converts between 200 languages all her work and is it the first that can do this? Can it do this? Can it really remove bias in the text, how on earth does it do that? How many Wikipedia articles can it publish without human intervention per day. Has women in red decided to fold/ base all their new work on this model etc because the problem is now solved? Victuallers (talk) 20:53, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
Thanks a lot @Victuallers. This is very useful feedback. My current understanding is that there are 2 main projects: 1 - generate draft article based on various sources to help editor produce articles. This could help getting to a more balanced representation on wiki[1]; 2 - automatic machine translation in rare languages to help translate existing articles into rare languages (NLLB-200 model is now used by the Wikimedia Foundation language tools)[2]. On both topics, Fan seems to be a lead researcher. I'll research more and try to clarify the content taking your feedback into account. Thanks again. simon (talk) 11:41, 13 July 2022 (UTC) simon (talk) 11:41, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
Just a point. Creating drafts of articles is a non-problem - we could easily create 100,000 drafts of missing notable women... the problem is that that everyone of them would need to be checked/rewritten by a human editor. If this could be measurably improved then that would be amazing. However I only read that this is an aspiration (a very worthy one of course) in the sources. Is there any evidence that her approach will make a big difference? Being a bit better is expected but its not notable. I would have thought that Women in Red would be a aware of amazing new tools - we have seen articles about them, but no one has said (that I know) that a new AI tool is better. Of course this is my OR - it could be that you can point to sources that do show/claim improvements to this process. I do hope so. Obviously being able to translate (even badly) between Catalan and Navajo would be remarkable but is that the claim? Victuallers (talk) 12:05, 13 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi. In the Ada Lovelace page Revision as of 10:13, 16 September 2021, you changed "Lady Byron" to "mathematician Lady Byron". Do you have a source for the claim that Lady Byron was a mathematician? It seems generally accepted that she studied mathematics as well as other subjects and that she encouraged Ada Lovelace to study mathematics, but I've not seen any claim that Lady Byron was herself a mathematician other than an unsourced edit by Shreeveen to the Lady Byron wikipedia page in Revision as of 04:54, 8 June 2019. This lengthy description of her life makes no mention of it: https://campuspress.uwl.ac.uk/uwlarchives/2021/08/31/445/86.159.18.215 (talk) 11:37, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
?? the source you offer in the first para says "Annabella was intellectually gifted with interests in Mathematics and Astronomy" .... what do you want? -sounds like a maths wizz to me. Victuallers (talk) 11:56, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
Ada Lovelace wrote and published mathematics. Her mother Lady Byron studied with a tutor. Unless there's more evidence of Lady Byron's mathematical activities, I don't think it is reasonable to put them both in the same category of mathematician. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.159.18.215 (talk) 12:21, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
I think you have made your mind up. History.com calls her a maths whizz and Her husband called her the "princess of parallelograms" and I don't think that was due to her geometric embroidery or watercolours. The idea that she was not in "same category of mathematician" is easy to prove. Ada was oustanding ... but that doesnt mean that her mother wasnt a mathematician. I'm not going to edit war this, its a minor point, but it belittles her mother's contribution. Victuallers (talk) 12:44, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

Dear Victuallers, administrator, Vanguard Editor, >140000 edits. Thank you very much for your work on the article Eleanor Butler, Countess of Desmond. Excellent. You rightly say she lived at Askeaton Castle, which was probably the normal seat for most of the earls of Desmond, but of course only one of many Desmond castles. Askeaton Castle is on an island in the River Deel in the town of Askeaton (I suspect the castle predates the town) in the County Limerick, Ireland. Somehow you linked Akeaton castle to Askerton Castle, which is in England and has never belonged to the Desmonds. The talk page maintains Eleanor is alive (living=y)???? With many thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 07:49, 24 September 2022 (UTC)

On 23 October 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Lucy de László, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that portraits of Lucy de László with a violin (one portrait pictured), painted by her husband, are recognised as some of the first examples of portraiture to include womens' talents in them? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Lucy de László. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Lucy de László), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hi there. Don't know if we've ever spoken before, but I've seen your name quite frequently. Thanks for all the effort you put into the project. I got a message from an editor on my talk page, see ???error??, and when I went to take a look at the cat, I saw that you had created it. I'm not really someone who spends a bunch of time in categories, but in looking at several of the others in this, that editor seems to have a point. But wanted to get your take. Thanks. Replaceable fair use File:Jessie Beatrice Kitson mayor.jpg[edit]
Thanks for uploading File:Jessie Beatrice Kitson mayor.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Ricky81682 (talk) 07:58, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:30, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

Thanks, Roger, for your additions to this page. It's always good to see your interest in the articles I create but I usually start with what becomes the lead to longer articles. Perhaps it is a mistake to start new articles in article space rather than in draft form but I find it rather a nuisance to have to move things around and I usually continue editing within the next 24 hours. I'm now in the process of expanding this one and hope to bring it up to at least start class by the end of the day. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 11:46, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
@Ipigott: thats OK I create my articles in article space too ... although I find that the quality required to avoid getting "helpful" templates within two minute of publishing a work in progress becomes a higher and higher bar. My main reason for not using draft is to encourage others like yourself to collaborate as its great to find that "my" article has grown a paragraph or magically my typos have corrected themselves. Do have a great Xmas in Lux. Best wishes Roger aka Victuallers (talk) 12:03, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
Yes, it's always great to see others have been improving my articles. Perhaps it's because most of them are about Scandinavians that I usually have to wait quite some time before any solid improvements are made, unless someone has nominated them as DYKs. Fortunately, I rarely get any of those bothersome templates. Hope you have a great Xmas too.--Ipigott (talk) 12:23, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sharon Wardle until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.
Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article until the discussion has finished.
Victuallers, I entirely agree with you about the notability of ambassadors. It is patently ridiculous that they are not considered to be inherently notable. But sadly the deletionists are taking over at AfD and it seems that there's little those of us who think this way can do about it. They just enjoy deleting the work of others, crow about their successes in doing it, and those of us who have the backbone to stand up to them (not many of us, unfortunately) are shouted down, mocked, sneered at and even threatened with "sanctions" (such as losing admin status - I have been threatened with this personally for stating an opinion at AfD) for "going against Wikipedia policy". The subject of inherent notability is a losing battle and one that I have largely given up on, as I know I just won't get the support. -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:15, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
Not a comment on this article specifically, but "inherent notability" isn't really a thing. Notability is not about what you or I think is important but what's written about elsewhere. In the world we live in, sportspeople get more attention than diplomats; Wikipedia is just a microcosm of that world. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:43, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
Hi Harry, That doesnt work with my understanding of notability. The love island "star"s get lots more hits than MPs or ambassadors but only the latter will make it into the Guardian obits or the ODNB. Coverage = celebrity .not. notability. Victuallers (talk) 12:12, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
Agree 100%. Wikipedia used to accept this too, but sadly the growth of the deletionist movement has ended this. There are still a few accepted cases of inherent notability around (e.g. WP:POLITICIAN), but they probably won't last much longer. It is now even being challenged that people with obits in major newspapers are notable (the claim is that they are only notable for dying - the fact that only a small number of people get obits and they are selected because of their achievements in life is apparently irrelevant). -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:51, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

I found this book Almanacco della donna Italiana (in Italian). Florence, Italy: R. Bemporad & Figlio. 1925 that has a ton of photos in it. I've uploaded Virginia Tango Piatti and Laura Orvieto, but it occurs to me that perhaps there is a way to download the whole book and extract the photos? I have zero clue how to do that, but thought that perhaps you would and then it would give us a bunch of images for our Mediterranean editathon next month. No worries if you are too busy, but I know that like me, you believe in the power of the picture. SusunW (talk) 18:05, 12 February 2023 (UTC)

I resolved this by determining it's public-domain. Thanks for thanking me for my edit by the way, fixing copyright issues often feels like thankless drudgery. I see that you wrote most of the the article on Marian Smith and ended up fighting with the bots. I didn't go digging into whether the photo could meet Wikipedia's rules for fair use, but I saw that it was orphaned and I know editors are pretty strict about using non-free images to identify people. Tip of the month:
Looking for new red links? Keep an eye out for interesting and notable friends, family, or associates of your last article subject, and re-examine group photos for other women who may still need an article.
If you are engaged in any other form of dispute that is not covered on the dispute resolution page, seek assistance at Wikipedia's Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents.
If you continue to disrupt Wikipedia, you may be blocked from editing. Reposting very closely paraphrased copyrighted text after it has been already explained here is disruptive. I hope this is a one-off and we don't need to open a CCI for your many contributions, if this is the lack of care you show in avoiding copyright violations.Fram (talk) 14:46, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
And yet you succeeded in posting the copyvio for a third time to the mainspace, before finally correcting it? Perhaps you can at least now delete the drafts and revdel the first two versions of the current page to hide the copyvio? And I sure hope that was the only part you copied from elsewhere instead of writing your own article. Fram (talk) 14:54, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
I suggest you refer this matter to a third party, it is obviously a matter of great concern to you. If you intend to open a CCI then do it. You are not encouraging co-operation with your requests. Victuallers (talk) 15:09, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
If you had shown any willingness to cooperate instead of posting the copyvio three times in a row in the mainspace, your reply would perhaps have some merit. I have long thought your content problematic, but at least it were just cases of largely misunderstanding what you were trying to summarize. While copying copyrighted text will mostly avoid that specific issue, it is just as problematic and unbecoming of any regular editor, especially an admin. But apparently this is not something you care about at all. Fram (talk) 15:27, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for sharing. You maybe don't appreciate just how important I consider your contributions. Victuallers (talk) 08:22, 7 June 2023 (UTC)

Thanks, Roger, for your kind words on our WIR anniversary page. You'll see I've added a couple of "historic" photos of you there. You might like to add some yourself, perhaps in connection with the many successful events you have managed to put together over the years. Good to see you are still adding a woman's biography each day. I'm now devoting more time to helping newcomers and encouraging other contributors to join the project. You'll see from our recent new members lists that I have been pretty successful over the past few months but it would be great to have more general support. Active new contributors from all walks of life are needed to ensure the continuation of our success to date.--Ipigott (talk) 09:07, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for sharing your memories and your kind words. Forever joined at the hip with you on this historic and fun journey. ♥ --Rosiestep (talk) 09:52, 22 June 2023 (UTC)

Thanks @Oronsay:, I was just logging on for the day and seeing Twitter suffering with self inflicted problems and the "____" above, so it was real lift to see the award. Thanks for taking the trouble and for your valued fellowship on the project. Victuallers (talk) 07:27, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! Join us for some virtual cake and add comments or memories and please keep on editing to close the gap!

Hello dear Victuallers, i just want to let you know about the conversation[4] with Andy and my attempt for a projectupdate[5] on the german project. If you wonder how i came to write you? I came across you helpful action there.[6] In case you feel or like to give us some hints in de:Wikipedia Diskussion:QRpedia your'e highly welcome. Best --Tom (talk) 11:47, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
I agree with your summary Tom (and Andy's). Wikimedia UK were in my opinion risk-averse rather than opportunity-aware but to be fair its the membership who could drive this. I was involved with about a dozen projects (see map) and I had ideas for how to create a QRpedia 2.0 but it would require a funded project to launch it. When QRpedia was gifted to WMUK then it was given the use of free consultants for a year and it undertook to keep it running forever. I'm sure they would support a re-launch (if a fire of enthusiasm began). Roger aka Victuallers Victuallers (talk) 12:28, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for your quick response, your expertise and advices dear Victuallers!
Your experiences with Wiki-Towns and the idea concerning a relaunch of QRpedia 2.0 are very inspiring. In fact, the project was not particularly commendably supported by WMUK. That may also have been due to the fact that there were some dissonances in 2012. We should try to make the best of it and work to secure the future operation and continued existence. At least the technical support and the secure server operation shouldn't really cause any difficulties, because there should be enough money available for it. It would be very embarrassing and damaging for Wikipedia if existing installations in museums suddenly stopped working. The operators of museums and other cultural institutions would also be harmed and would lose trust in Wikipedia. So there are very good reasons to support and expand the QR-Pedia and these installations. It is deplorable that so far this has not received the necessary professional support. We will try to do better together in the future.
Best regards --Tom (talk) 13:01, 21 July 2023 (UTC)

Copying within Wikipedia requires better attribution[edit]
Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from one or more pages into another page. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you.
You have used many edit summaries like "new stub based on refs given, en:Elizabeth Montagu, en:A Father's Legacy to His Daughters and wikidata", which doesn't make it clear at all that you actually copied text directly from these articles (after all, you didn't copy text from the sources in most cases, nor from Wikidata, so why would it be different for the enwiki articles mentioned?). Please follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and preferably note such copies at the talk page as well. Fram (talk) 14:15, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
thank you for your advice I will use the word copy in future. It can be tricky for some ppl to figure that out. You are the first person to notice this. And its nice to know that advice on Good practice exists. Victuallers (talk) 15:29, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
"You are the first person to notice this." Yes, like I was the first person to notice your copyright violations, hence the CCI. Because you refuse to remove your autopatrolled right, your edits don't get the scrutiny they clearly should have. It can indeed be tricky for most people to realise that an admin deliberately uses deceptive edit summaries or doesn't know the basics of our policies and guidelines and hasn't apparently bothered checking them even after the CCI opened (where you claimed to be wanting to help, but in reality did nothing to help at all). Perhaps instead of removing your autopatrolled right, you should simply hand in your admin bit as you obviously are not well-versed enough in and don't care enough about such basic policies. Fram (talk) 15:34, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
I thought for a moment you had started to have discussions in line with the approach taken by all the other people who review "my" articles. This angry hyperbole will not do. It is as successful as your CCI. Calm down. Victuallers (talk) 17:27, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
"It is as successful as your CCI"? CCI has a huge backlog, and because you have made zero effort to actually help, nothing has been fone so far. Why you seem to think that is somehow bad for me and good for you is not really clear, but it again confirms my "hyperbole" in that you don´t care one bit about the issues you create. Fram (talk) 17:50, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
By the way, I had already noted in your CCI that you needed to provide proper attribution when copying within enwiki, but despite your superficially civil claims about wanting to help, you did absolutely nothing to rectify older problems and continued with the same issues. Fram (talk) 17:54, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
Its the hyperbole Fram. It detracts from any argument you might have. "you did absolutely nothing" ... how do you know? I might have resisted copying the whole of the Welsh Wikipedia into a new article on the French Wikipedia without mentioning where it was from. Did I delete a comma? My offer of help at the CCI (to anyone who was convinced by the evidence offered) got lost in the hyperbole that followed it. In my opinion the invective is counter productive. Feel free to add your comment I am not going to continue this. Victuallers (talk) 18:24, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

Umm "new start based on refs given, huge cut from G. B. W. Lewis and wikidata - a fair sized work in progress" is what it says Victuallers (talk) 15:47, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
You're missing see that page's history for attribution. This is important. - UtherSRG(talk) 15:49, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
I will add that very text. Seems obvious to me ... but if its not obvious then adding that causes no problems whatsover so "new start based on refs given, huge cut from G. B. W. Lewis and wikidata - a fair sized work in progress = please see see that page's history for attribution" would be fine? Victuallers (talk) 15:57, 22 September 2023 (UTC)

Congratulations on your efforts to increase the number of articles on women[edit]
Hi Victuallers, Saw your work (of course) on Helen Wilson Fell, who is a member, by birth and marriage, of two very remarkable families of Scottish immigrants to Australia. I saw too your personal aim of 250 articles on notable women, and am full of admiration that you are doing such a great job increasing the number of Wikipedia articles on notable women. Although I myself don't usually work in that space, I fully support the objective. Just for your interest, I did write one article on a remarkable woman, Dot Butler. Hopefully, it has contributed to your group's aims!
Good luck too with the 'deletionists'; I have come across this problem myself and am amazed at some attempts to delete articles as 'non-notable'. (Look at what they did with this one, The Bush Club, after I had tried to address earlier (2017) criticisms ot the article.) I see articles all the time that to me personally are 'non-notable' (reams of stuff on episodes of soap operas or Netflix series, etc.), However, if an article is of interest to any 'third party' person, then there has to be a good reason to 'delete' it; Wikipedia is a knowledge base covering a literally encyclopedic range of topics. I do work myself in the area of obscure topics; subject matter that has been forgotten or is on the verge of being forgotten in the public's mind, but to me these subjects are 'notable'. Articles on women and groups of women seem to be particularly vulnerable to action by 'deletionists', and it could just be another passive-aggressive power trip for grumpy (old or young) men. Anyway, best wishes for your valuable work.TrimmerinWiki (talk) 00:22, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
@TrimmerinWiki: Thank you so much for your kind words, and sorry for delay. I see Helen has been viewed about 60 times! I recently completed doing every British woman in the ODNB on the day Women in Red was formed (or near as) .... so it looks like Australian women are next in line. I'm up to about 260 doing one woman per day trying to match a previous run of 360. Liked seeing that you had fixed some of my errors .... that is essential! Wiki is co-operative. I create articles but its only by the work of others that they improve in quality. Deletionists and those who add tags are, I guess, in some way essential ... but they don't improve the project as much as constructive editting. Do hope to see you on my watch list or on my or the WIR talk page. Cheers Victuallers (talk) 11:14, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
I noticed that there was a mix of dates on the article. Some were "month day, year" and other "day month year". I changed them ll to "day month year" because I think that is the Australian format. Hope that's OK. You might want to check the links for Indigenous Australians as I'm not completely sure which is the correct usage. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (solidly non-human), Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 05:11, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! - I use a number of tools and they don't agree on a correct format - and I have no strong views on the subject. Thanks for improving the article (alot!) in the spirit of a wiki. I'm not aware of the correct usage for Indigenous Australians either (esp. tricky as Lucy's genetics are disputed) - again I follow the sources and hope that a more informed editor can improve the new article. Victuallers (talk) 07:37, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
I have now closed that discussion with a result of revoking the right. This will of course not effect your ability to contribute in any way. Beeblebrox (talk) 23:28, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

There isn't a rule that everything in draft invariably always has to go through the WP:AFC process in all instances; there can sometimes be instances where draft space is used for other reasons besides the AFC process per se. But if the creator has formally submitted the page to the review queue, then they can't just bypass that review by moving the page into mainspace while it still has a yellow "waiting for review" template on it. A page can be either moved to mainspace or submitted for AFC review, but not both at the same time. Bearcat (talk) 15:14, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
You've done AFC review before, haven't you? (I'm sure you have, and even if you haven't, I know you've been around more than long enough to be eligible.) Thanks @Ipigott: nice to see the work is being further exploited. I'll tell Terence. I wonder if we could back upgrade the existing plaques?? Victuallers (talk) 08:26, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
Rather than updating the plaques, would it not be possible to trigger a voice option from the existing QRpedia plaques? Have we any recent information on their use and popularity? --Ipigott (talk) 09:02, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
Ummm thats what I meant Ian, @Tom:, there are/were plaques on Tutu's house, Gandhis and Mandelas. If the code was updated with new functionality then they would suddenly have a new life. This would improve codes that have been dormant for some time. e.g. in Odessa where access might be tricky Victuallers (talk) 09:13, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
I noticed your annotation (??? who?) on the list of Aussie women that you are currently working through. The list was originally created by The Drover's Wife who included a number of women who do not have entries in the ADB, because they may still be alive or have died recently. ADB is working on 1996–2000 deaths at the moment. Oronsay (talk) 18:27, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
