Chocolate Soldier[edit]

Thanks for your additions to the article, but you need to add references to WP:Reliable sources when you add information. Do you have a reference relating the Israeli army term to the operetta? Hello. You wanted to add this infomation to the article about the operetta The Chocolate Soldier:

In the colloquial Hebrew of Israel, especially as used among IDF [WHAT IS IDF?? Please do not use abbreviations without explanation] soldiers, the term "A Chocolate Soldier" (Hayal Shel Shokolad, חייל של שוקולד), ultimately derived from the operetta,^{[citation needed]} is a term for a clumsy or spoiled soldier who fails to exhibit militaristic virtues. The term can be used pejoratively or humorously, depending on context.^{[citation needed]}

What published source can you point to that proves that what you wrote here is true? Is it clear that the term has anything to do with the operetta? We need a clear citation proving that.

You also wanted to add this information: A Hebrew song "The Chocolate Soldier", was written by Hanoch Levin [1], [2].

Does this song have anything to do with the operetta? If so, what?

The term is also used; other conspicuous use of the term [3], [4], [5], [6].

Well, that's a little bit better, but it is not a balanced entry into the article, because there are no other descriptions in the article of cultural references to the show from around the world. In any case, what does the song by Hanoch Levin have to do with the operetta? Do you have a reference that states that his song is based on, or refers to the operetta? I think I have done my best, and this is a concrete connection to the operetta. I think it deserves to be in, even if there are no traceable cultural connections from other countries. About the Hanoch Levin poem and the song, I don't have such a concrete proof, as yet, though I suspect there is one. If you simply Google for "Tannhäuser" + "Pope Urban" you will find many dozens of references, since this is a very well-known legend which is part of European culture and inspired Wagner, Swinburne and others. Good, but it is the editor's responsibility to put references in for all new information added. WP:V is one of the most important policies in Wikipedia. I removed the subscription only reference and formatted the second one so that the reference gives bibliographic information in the footnote. See WP:CITE. I also added "cite needed" tags in the two further places that need references. You assert that they lived contemporaneously - that needs a reference. You also assert that there is no historical evidence confirming the legend. That also needs to be referenced. By adding references to Wikipedia, you make a much stronger encyclopedia. We can't tell readers that "everyone knows" what we wrote is true: rather, we must select WP:reliable sources that show that what we write is true. I tried to take care of these two problems as best I could. Their being contemporaries I think is unquestionable with the one having died in 1264 and the other being very active in the decades before 1264 and having died at some time after 1265, and having been already very active in the 1240's. I felt at liberty to take away the "citation needed". The other I think is also clearly taken care of - the information about Tannhäuser's life comes from his poetry, and I am sure if there was any reference in his poetry to having met the Pope for a casual chat, this would be mentioned by anyone talking of the later legend. Sorry, you need to add references, not more stuff that belongs in the Tannhauser article. If something is "unquestionable", then people must have written about it, and there must be a WP:reliable source for it. There must be sources that say 1) when historians think the historical Tannhauser died; 2) When the legend first appeared; and 3) That there is no historical evidence of the legend. You must have read that somewhere. Where? This article is very bad, because it is essentially unreferenced. If you want to improve the article, you need to add referenced information. The Tannhauser article is also an underreferenced article. If you want to make them better, you can get the best sources from your google search and add citations to them to the articles. If you need help formatting the citations, I'd be happy to help you, but a good encyclopedia presents sourced information. Excuse me, there is no vandalism involved. John the Hungarian was a Hungarian, and he was a diplomat, so there is nothing wrong with placing him in the category of Hungarian Diplomats so that people who are interested in this subject can find him according to this category. John the Hungarian is a redirect page which leads people to the Exultavit cor nostrum page where the information about this person - who was Hungarian and was a diplomat - appears. I first placed the "Hungarian Diplomats" category on the John the Hungarian page and you immediately reverted that as "vandalism". There, I agree, is the most logical place to place this category. I live in the U.S., and my father is from Trinidad. His mother's maiden name was McShine. I noticed that you used the book "The McShines of Trinidad" by Anthony De Verteuil as a reference. Would you happen to know where I could obtain a copy of that book? I have recently started researching my ancestry and have had much luck on my mother's side (all Americans) but not on my father's. Actually, a friend of mine has gotten a copy of it from the Library of Congress in Washington, which had an excess copy which they sent her in exchange for some papers she sent them. Greetings--I just knew that your contribution to TEP would be reverted by that person. Do not fret as all it seems to come from that person is editing of other people's contribution; hardly any new contributions and in fact sometime very insulting and caustic remarks about the actions of others if they persist in having their contributions remain. And when that person takes an interest in an article you can never contribute anything that is approved by that person by that person personally entering it into the article in how that person wants it worded which is usually never in the form that one contributes. So, hope you are not put off. I always look at the history of an article before starting to contribute least that person appear and dominate the development. New Mexican Ladino[edit]

I notice you added a definition to the Ladino disambiguation page of “the variety of Mexican Spanish spoken in New Mexico.” Is that to differentiate it from the native language of Hispanos in that state?

A while ago the article for New Mexican Spanish asserted that the dialect is called Ladino in Mexico, but I removed it as dubious and unsourced. If you, however, could provide any more leads on the NM variety known as “Ladino,” or areas where español neomexicano is called Ladino, that’d be great! I came up empty-handed.

Orange[edit]

Hello, Blanche of King's Lynn. I removed Orange Order, Orange Order in Scotland, and Orange Order in Canada from the disambiguation page, Orange. Those appear to be "partial name matches", things that have Orange as a part of their name, but are not called simply Orange. In the Orange Order article, for example, there are references to Orange Order, Orangemen, and Orange Institution, but no references to the group as Orange or the Orange.

If I have made a mistake – that is, if the group is sometimes called simply Orange – then you may want to re-add the links. If you do, however, be aware that the style guide for disambiguation pages stipulates only one blue link per bullet. In other words, you should write something like *[[Orange Order]], a fraternal organization in Northern Ireland rather than * [[Orange Order]] in [[North Ireland]]. Well, what happened is I followed today's featured article on R. V. C. Bodley. I saw that he got the Order of Wen-Hu (4th Class) by the Republic of China in 1921. I was curious about that award, followed into its page and saw that it means "The Order of the Striped Tiger" - and named for the animal, not the butterfly. So, a confusion is quite possible. Looking at it, I think the existing Italian photo is a better choice because it is a photo of the War Memorial, pure and simple, while what I wanted to put in is a photo of a city square which also includes a war Memorial. Hello Blanche of King's Lynn. The articles are not about the "same country". 'History of Palestine' is about the geographic region known as Palestine and 'History of Israel' is about the State of Israel. The article mentions Israel's historical background which include Ancient Israel as well as the Jewish community of Palestine through the centuries. That is exactly the point which I tried to make in my forbidden "Editorialising". Israel is a modern state which was founded in 1948, so logically the history of Israel could have been deemed to have started in 1948. However, since Israel is a Jewish State following the Zionist ideology, it considers any Jewish/Hebrew presence in the country over thousands of years to be part of its history - and therefore the page about the History of Israel, a state founded in 1948, begins in Pre-History. The History of Israel and the History of Palestine pages describe both the history of the same geographical area and are both divided into the same historical periods, but the History of Israel puts a much greater emphasis on Jews/Hebrews (even in periods when they were a small minority). That is obvious enough, the reasons for it are obvious enough, and I see no reason to try to change it. I only thought that an interested Wikipedia user who is not so familiar with the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict might find it a bit bewildering, so I tried to drop a useful hint. I'm really not an expert in that area, so you may want to ask somebody who is, but there are very strict rules governing fair use images on Wikipedia. At an absolute minimum, there need to be separate "paperwork" templates on the image description page justifying the use of the image in each article in which it is used. Currently on File:Seven Days in New Crete Cover.jpg, there's a paperwork template for use of the image in the "Seven Days in New Crete", but no template for the use in the "Triple Goddess (Neopaganism)" article. Sooner or later, someone or some bot will come along and flag this discrepancy, after which the image may end up being unceremoniously excised from the "Triple Goddess (Neopaganism)" article... Most of your recent editing seems to include adding large amounts of unsourced material, and looking at the warnings on your talk page, this has been an ongoing problem for years. A recent edit you made was reverted because the source you gave doesn't seem to exist. Another seems to exist, but is extremely obscure, and it seems you just copied the text from the <ref>...</ref> from another page. And I don't see what is wrong with copying relevant text from one Wikipedia page to another, together with the references appearing in the other page. Logically, this seems to me a completely legitimate procedure. If the referecne was OK in the one page, why is it not so in the other one? I did it very many times in very many pages, and never saw the slightest reason why this should be wrong. You now said "and it seems you just copied the text from the <ref>...</ref> from another page.These are very serious concerns" - why should these be very serious concerns?

It's a concern if you copied the reference without actually using it – that is, to make it appear that the text you added was sourced to this particular reference even if it really wasn't. I was reprimanded for adding unsourced material, so I made an effort to avoid that. But I understand that this is not enough, and I have to take a careful look at the sources - even when they appear in another Wikipedia page and were presumably already checked when they were put there. You've just made the same sort of problematic edit to A Modern Utopia that I brought up concerns about with regard to sourcing, despite your insistence that you would be more careful immediately above. Do you understand the issues here? I have no wish to drag this to ANI, but I'm not seeing any willingness to improve. (On a side note, but please use preview when making edits; almost all your edits are followed by multiple minor tweaks. Everyone makes mistakes, but you do this with practically every edit, and you have something like 100 messages from DPL bot about disambig links. This is less important compared to the other stuff, but I still wanted to mention it.) Is it not a fact that in nearly five centuries since Henry VIII, no English or British Monarch named his or her heir "Henry" and there had been no Henry IX? Until this Henry, English Monarchs used this name eight times. Since then, not once. When I look at Wikipedia pages, I don't find that each and every sentence has a footnote pointing to a source. Many pages have whole paragraphs which are unsourced, so if that is an unalterable and completely inflexible rule, you should go around deleting all these paragraphs. I now looked up the Ph.D. I did NOT invent it, it is right there on the page of Prince Oscar of Prussia (born 1959). You simply looked up the wrong Prince, Prince Oscar of Prussia. He has since made a career as a media manager: he has been managing director of the German branch of Discovery Channel, founder of KiKa, new media manager of Hubert Burda Media Group and radio manager of Holtzbrinck Publishing Group.[1] (This is sourced - can stay.)

In 2017 Oskar was named Patron of the Altmark Festival, a music festival in Saxony-Anhalt.[2] (Also this is sourced and can stay.)

I have looked through the reasons why I have been blocked and understand them, and - much as any person dislikes admitting to mistakes - I accept that that the administrators who blocked me did not do it without a good reason.

In my defense I can say that I did not act wantonly and that the edits which I made seemed to me very reasonable. For example, that if a German Jew had the name Arthur Ruppin that indicated that he had a family connection to the town of Ruppin, or that the fact that English and British Monarchs since the 16th Century refrained from giving their heirs the name "Henry" shows that they disapproved of King Henry VIII. And with the name Uzzi I know from many visits to Israel that it is a common name there, as I personally know two people with that name and know of many others. But on reflection I realize that I did violate Verifiability which is a core content policy, and that there is a very good reason for Wikipedia to insist on it.

So I overcome my pride and humbly ask to be forgiven, I promise if unblocked to be much more careful about this from now on, and am aware that I will be under observation and that a "repeat offence" could lead to my being blocked again - and then it would be much more difficult to get out of it.

Your unblock request goes some way towards showing that you understand what was wrong with your edits but still leaves me with concerns. First and foremost is that you've been making these sorts of edits for years and it's been brought to your attention multiple times that they're a problem. In fact, in August 2019, you were threatened with a block but you insisted that your edits were not problematic and continued to make them. To be clear, you can legitimately state in Wikipedia's voice that there has never been a Henry IX (although it's so obvious as to be the question of why it needs to be stated); what you can't do on Wikipedia is draw your own conclusions. If a reputable historian writes that the lack of an heir named Henry is a tacit comment on Henry VIII, you can state that they have drawn that conclusion (with a citation to the book/journal/etc), but you can't draw it yourself in Wikipedia's voice. My other main concern is that I've sampled your last 200 article edits and they all follow the same pattern of adding information that you "know" without any backing. In fact, I didn't see a single edit where you added a reference to support your additions. Do you understand why verifiability is important, and why Wikipedia articles cannot simply consist of things editors "know"? @HJ Mitchell:, just a random passerby here with no previous experience of this editor (saw the ANI post regarding the issues leading to the block) but an interest in retaining her as a contributor who seems to have a good outlook, now that the block has focused her attention on the issues. It seems as if you're looking for nothing more than a cogent response to your inquiry above, and obviously if that turns out to be enough for you to unblock, that's a best case scenario. However, if it still comes down to a close call for you, I'd like to offer to be a short term stop-gap guarantor of her edits: for the next couple of months, I'll periodically review her edits, raise any concerns about WP:V that I find, and if I am not seeing a marked change in behavior on sourcing, I can bring the matter back to your attention or ANI.

That is, assuming Blanche would be comfortable with such a mentoring arrangement: I don't want to insert myself where I am not wanted, especially if she was going to get her privileges back with just a well-worded response: my goal here is not to nominate myself as a probation officer, but rather to build up policy competencies in an editor who I think might have avoided these issues in the first place with more engagement than she received when confronted with past missteps.
