The admissions for the one year full time programme is based on the GMAT scores followed by an interview round. The quality of prior work and future leadership potential is a critical factor in the selections.

Location of the IIMs

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are a group of autonomous management institutes of higher education in India. The establishment of IIMs was envisioned and initiated by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India .[1] They were established to provide management education and to assist industry through research and consulting services. The IIMs offer Post Graduate Diploma programmes, Fellowship programmes in Mananagement and other short-term courses.[2]

The IIM Council oversees the administration of these institutes. The council, chaired by the Union Minister of Human Resource Development, consists of Directors of all IIMs and other bureaucrats of Ministry of Human Resource Development.[3]

Indian Institute of Management Calcutta was the first IIM to be set up, on November 13, 1961.[4] Its main campus, covering 135 acres (0.5 km2) of area, is located in Joka, on the outskirts of Kolkata, West Bengal. The institute moved to its present campus in 1975.[5] It offers post graduate programmes, as well as doctoral and executive education programs.[6]

Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad was the second IIM to be set up, on December 16, 1961.[4] Noted scientist Vikram Sarabhai and other Ahmedabad-based industrialists played a major role in its creation. It also had collaboration with Harvard Business School during its initial period.[7] It is the only Indian institute listed by The Economist on its 2011 Full time MBA ranking, at #78.[8] Its two campuses, joined by an underground gallery, cover more than 100 acres (40 ha).[9]

Indian Institute of Management Bangalore was established in 1973 following the success of IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad.[10] It offers special programmes in Software Enterprise Management and Public Policy Management.[11] It is ranked by Eduniversal as the top Business School in India.[12]

Indian Institute of Management Lucknow is the fourth IIM to be established, in 1984.[2] According to the institute website, it is the first IIM to start an additional campus, the Noida campus. The campus was established in 2007 and focuses on executive programmes.[13] IIM Lucknow offers a unique program in Agribusiness Management.[14]

Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode, the fifth IIM, was established in 1996[15] and started its first batch of students in 1997.[16] In 2001 it was the first institute in Asia to offer a distance learning programme in management for working executives.[17] It has one of the largest numbers of Faculty Development Programmes in India.[18] It was the first institute to have more than 30% female students, in 2010.[19]

Indian Institute of Management Indore, the sixth IIM and the last of the first batch, was established in 1996.[20] Its 193 acres (78 ha) campus is located on at Rau, near Indore.[21] IIM Indore offers a unique course for armed forces officers, designed particularly for mid-level defence officers.[22]

Indian Institute of Management Shillong, also known as Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management, was the seventh IIM established, following a 2005 decision by the Government of India.[23] The foundation stone of the institute was laid on December 1, 2007[24] and started its academic session from 2008-09 in the temporary accommodation at Mayurbhanj Palace, Shillong,[2] while work on constructing its permanent 120 acres (49 ha) campus has commenced.[25]

Indian Institute of Management Rohtak, the eighth IIM to be inaugurated,[notes 1] was the first of the six IIMs established in 2010-2011 as part of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan[26][27] It was inaugurated and started operation on 30 June 2010 with IIM Lucknow as mentor, from a temporary campus at Maharishi Dayanand University.[28] The foundation stone for the permanent campus was laid by Human Resource Development Minister, Kapil Sibal on 1 October 2010.[29]

Indian Institute of Management Ranchi, the ninth IIM to be inaugurated,[notes 1] started operations on July 6, 2010 by the then Governor of Jharkhand M. O. H. Farook.[30] It has the highest CAT cut-off of all IIMs, 99.66%.[27]

Indian Institute of Management Raipur, the tenth IIM, was inaugurated by Raman Singh, Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh on October 11, 2010. It is mentored by IIM Indore.[31] Classes are taking place at the Government Engineering College (GEC), Sejbahar. Construction of the permanent campus, on 175 acres (71 ha) of land, has started on August 2011.[32]

Indian Institute of Management Tiruchirappalli, the eleventh IIM, was inaugurated on 4 January 2011. It is mentored by IIM Bangalore and operates temporarily from the campus of National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli.[33] The classes of the first batch of students began on 15 June 2011.[34]

Indian Institute of Management Udaipur, the twelfth IIM, started operation on July 2011 from a temporary campus at the Mohanlal Sukhadia University[35] under the mentorship of IIM Indore.[36] Construction of the permanent campus, on 253 acres (102 ha) of land in the Balicha area of Udaipur, Rajasthan,[37] has began, and is expected to take between two and three years.[35]

Indian Institute of Management Kashipur, the youngest IIM, started operation in July 2011, under the mentorship of IIM Lucknow.[38] The foundation stone for the 200 acres (81 ha) permanent campus in the Escorts Farm Area of Kashipur, Uttarakhand, was laid in April 2011.[39] It operates from a temporary campus located at Ganna Sansthan, Bazpur Road Kashipur.[40]

Reservation policy

IIMs follow a caste-based affirmative action policy as per the provisions in the Indian constitution, similar to the reservation policy elsewhere in India.[citation needed]As per the rules of admission to IIMs, 15% of the admitted students must be of the Scheduled Castes, and 7.5% of seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribes. The Other Backward Classes have been given 27% reservation since 2008 with the consent of the Supreme Court of India. It was implemented in a phased manner. Candidates applying for reserved seats are also required to take the Common Admission Test, though with lower requirements. Candidates have to clear further rounds which may consist of Group Discussion and Personal Interviews.[citation needed] Once admitted to the course, a reserved category student is required to meet all the criteria for completing the course as a General category student.[citation needed]

Academics

The IIMs offer only Post Graduate Courses. The two-year Post Graduate Diploma in Management is the flagship course across all IIMs. Some IIMs also offer a one-year Post Graduate Programme for executives.[45] Two-year Post Graduate Diploma in Agribusiness Management is offered by IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Lucknow. IIM Indore offers a five-year undergraduate-graduate combined programme, called Integrated Program in Management. IIMs also offer the Fellow Programme in Management, a doctoral programme in management sciences. Some IIMs offer short-term executive education courses and part-time programmes. All the faculty employed in IIMs have doctorates.

Alumni

In year 2005 leading alumni of various IIMs founded alumni organizations in various parts of the world, in order to form a dynamic community of leaders and thinkers who make a difference across the world.[46]

In year 2007 various alumni chapters of IIMs decided to form a Global IIM Alumni Society, to network existing alumni chapters and provide a common platform to link them all. It organizse global management events, publish books, contribute back to the parent institutions, network alumni via a shared intranet and extranet etc."[47]
