You sir are very wise and raise excellent points.[1][2] Your appeal to Mill's maxim is particularly insightful and apt, while demonstrating your actual understanding of the referenced material. For example, you properly (but not in accordance with popular convention) refer to it as a "liberal" maxim. It would be a great help if people were more familiar with the intellectual ground already tread regarding many concepts and governance issues we address. Vassyana (talk) |

This barnstar is awarded to DGG. Thank you for the excellent advice. More than any other editor on wikipedia, everytime you give me advice, it gives me serious pause. I know it annoys you that I quote you so much, but it is because you have such a talent of eloquently expressing the root and essence of any given situation, in a way that in four years, I have never seen another editor on Wikipedia be able to do. I am not the first nor the last editor to remind you of this incredible gift you have, but I among the most grateful. Thank you for being such a guiding star for so many editors in this project. Thanks, really, for your longterm solid participation in wikipedia, including in generally under-appreciated support area contributions. I found myself "thanking" you for a recent AFC action, and i realized i still appreciate your really decent comment in an AFD long ago. Your comment was positive about a topic that I had worked on, but especially struck me as professional and was helpful in allowing me to see that Wikipedia can be a decent place. That editorial processes can work and have reason prevail, even amidst the crazy randomness of an environment where "anyone can edit". That was in 2007 when i was just getting started, and it made a difference. Thanks! --doncram 14:32, 24 October 2014 (UTC) |

Superiority Complex?
[edit]Instead of going around Wp tagging pages as "may be not notable" in some sort of superior way, why not put some effort in and improve the articles yourself? Albatross2147 (talk) 02:01, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- there are 2000 articles a day submitted to Wikipedia. About 1/2 are totally unacceptable. Of the other 1/2, probably about 200 need major improvements. I try to fix up one or two a day. "may not be notable" means that someone has some reason to doubt it. I will add such a tag if , for example, another editor has placed a tag for deletion as hopelessly non-notable, and I don't think its quite as bad as that. But what article or discussion are you referring to--we usually don't work in the same areas, so I'm a little puzzled? DGG (talk) 02:25, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

About: your eloquent summary of what does and does not improves this project
[edit]Hi DGG, or if I may be so bold, David,
You wrote at WP:AN/I Archive691:
<block quote>There is more than one valid way of working here. Some people prefer to create only high quality articles, even though they may do very few of them. Some prefer to create many verifiable articles of clear notability even though they may not be of initially high quality. As this is a communal project, I think every individual person is fully entitled to do whichever they prefer, and the thing to do about people who prefer otherwise than oneself is to let them work their way, while you work yours. The only choice which is not productive is to argue about how to do it, rather than going ahead in the way that one finds suitable.</block quote>
Many [who?] editors include a statement about their attitudes to editing on their user pages. I am not one of them, that is until I came across what you wrote. I would really like to include this on my user page. While I can add anything at all I like to my user page subject to WP:USER PAGE, I nevertheless ask for your permission to add the quote. OK with you? I'm fine if you decline this.

- Ditto, I just wanted to thank you as well although I followed the discussion from a distance (I think it had more than enough active participants). Admins can get a lot of flack but when one takes on settling such a sprawling debate, knowing that no matter what one decides, there will be some very unhappy editors, I can only say thanks. And providing such a thoughtful rationale (rather than a sentence-long decision), is admirable and helps the decision "stick"...ambiguity would have only resulted in further challenges to your decision. Instead, if individuals do want to overturn this decision, they know that the burden of providing evidence resides with those wishing to change the status quo, and there has to be a substantial case to do so. Liz Read! Talk! 19:14, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
- I am hoping that you won't need to clarify that the consensus finding doesn't only apply to birds, but you might; there's a (smaller and quieter) camp who want to always capitalize moths/butterflies and dragonflies, and another in favor of doing the same with common names of British (and I think Australian) plants. The debate may have focused on birds, but that focus should be scene as license to capitalize non-bird species common names. — SMcCandlish ☺ ☏ ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ᴥⱷʌ≼ 08:39, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

[edit]- You, DGG, are incomparable. I have seen the range and depth of issues that you contend with, everything from Wikipedia-as-performance-art-NOT, to reining in the young lady who was using Wikipedia to write her autobiography, viz. What Wikipedia is not: Facebook!!! I agree, by the way, regarding those wretched professors who assign their students to vandalize Wikipedia as part of a university-level course. I read one such account, maybe THE canonical account, as I hope there are not multiple instances of professors doing such things, in the Chronicle of Higher Education the other day. You know Magnus. the extraordinary toolserver contributor by way of German Wikipedia, correct? He is of sufficient stature as a scientist that he got his own BLP article, although his countrymen on German Wikipedia deleted it as "not notable"; the temerity of them! It wasn't as though he wrote it himself. Anyway, I noticed on his talk page, that someone was writing some pseudo-science crud article about a ladies food and health book. Remember, I am a lady, so I can say these things. Magnus has a PhD in biochemistry. So, in this message, the WP editor wanted to use a copyrighted image about the ladies food book's author, from Flickr. She asked Magnus to make the account holder on Flickr re-license the image so that she (the WP editor) could use it in her article here on WP! Can you believe that? I mention this because I noticed your civil and courteous response to the young lady's edict to you, "not to mess up" her autobiographical page about her poems. Sigh! You need the "Patience of a Saint" Barnstar. Magnus probably does too. I am so happy I ran across you, and selected others, here on WP! I wish we could all meet one day, you and Andreas and the kindly man who owns pigs and lives in Thailand, and Snowy Susan (whom I've missed), and the good CPA From L.A. and my new acquaintance, the hillbilly, and a few others that I have since triangulated with on the Twitter. [edit]Request for guidance
[edit]- Dear Sir, I cannot tell you how happy I am feeling by directly communicating with you. You definitely posses more understanding about WP, its policies and about editing. I will surely take your guidance as there will be need. Till this time in my editing history, I have not met any one who takes pain to explain things in so much of detail. In this whole painful process, I am happy that I got to know a person like you, from whom I can request for guidance if I am stuck up somewhere or if I think that I will get stuck up in future about that particular thing. One thing I got to know while dealing with deletion process is - if there is deletion discussion, or deletion of an article, there is no point in fighting over it at that time. If the article is really notable, someone will propose it sooner or later and the process will take care of itself. Trying to defend a particular article much aggressively is not advised, I would say. Also there is no point in trying to recreate it by the same person again. I will read more of your work and your discussions to find more guidance and will consult you as needed. Thanks a lot once again for you time to explain things in so much detail. -- Dr.Abhijeet Safai (talk) 07:30, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
