Lubuntu (IPA: [luːˈbuːntuː]) is a project that is intended to lead to an official derivative of the Ubuntu operating system that is "lighter, less resource hungry and more energy-efficient", using the LXDE desktop environment.[1][2][3]

The LXDE desktop uses the Openbox window manager and is intended to be a low system requirement, low RAM environment for netbooks, mobile devices and older PCs. In this role it will compete with Xubuntu.[1]

Nomenclature

The name Lubuntu is a combination of LXDE and Ubuntu. LXDE stands for Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment, while Ubuntu means "humanity towards others" in the Zulu and Xhosa languages. Combined as Lubuntu it does not have any specific new meaning.

History

The LXDE desktop was first made available as an optional package for Ubuntu starting with version 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex". LXDE can also be installed in earlier versions of Ubuntu[4]

In February 2009 Mark Shuttleworth invited the LXDE project to become self-maintained project within the Ubuntu community, with the aim of leading to a dedicated new official Ubuntu derivative to be called Lubuntu.[2]

In March 2009 the Lubuntu project was started on Launchpad by Mario Behling, including an early project logo. The project also established an official Ubuntu wiki project page, also under Behling's management, that includes listings of applications, packages and components.[3][5]

Applications

Unlike in other desktop environments, the components of LXDE are not tightly integrated.[6] Instead, they can run independently of each other.[7]

LXDE consists of several components:

  • PCMan File Manager
  • LXLauncher, easy-mode application launcher
  • LXPanel, desktop panel
  • LXSession, session manager
  • LXAppearance, theme switcher
  • leafpad, text editor
  • Xarchiver, archiving
  • GPicView, image viewer
  • LXTerminal, terminal emulator
  • LXTask, task manager
  • LXNM, lightweight network connection helper daemon for LXDE supporting wireless connections (Linux-only)
  • Openbox, window manager
