Wikipedia:Requests for page protection

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Jnorton7558 (talk | contribs) at 22:58, 17 February 2013 (Requesting full protection of List of Iron Chef America episodes. (TW)). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

    Current requests for protection

Place requests for new or upgrading pending changes, semi-protection, full protection, move protection, create protection, template editor protection, or upload protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

    Semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – vandalized numerous times in the past month . Aunva6 (talk) 20:43, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection. Persistent additions of unsourced (except by YouTube links), unencyclopedic fan cruft. I can't revert anymore. Reporting for edit-warring won't help because of IP-hopping.--Bbb23 (talk) 19:50, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite semi-protection: BLP policy violations – Repeated changes by IP editors, resulting in a version that is manifestly a BLP violation (identifying a living person as a "Filipino journalist" when in fact he has not lived there since a child and has certainly never been a journalist there). This is a sensitive issue that needs to be addressed by editors who understand BLP policy and can work out the right way forward via discussion; the history of IP edits on this article show that editing needs to be restricted here. . Temporary full protection: Content dispute/edit warring – Statements in total disregard of administrative warnings [[1]] protection seems to be in order to avoid having to hand out blocks to anyone. The article in question is under dispute resolution but statements that an editor will continue edit warring to force people to the table seem to be immature at best and supremely disruptive at worse. . Indefinite pending changes: Persistent vandalism – Ongoing at various Cole Sprouse related articles. Apparently, last year Sprouse upset tumblr supporters,[2] and since then they've been vandalising articles by changing his name to "Satan", "Peasant", "He who shall not be named" etc. This seems like it will be going on for some time based on edits to date so PC seems to be the best option - no need to punish legitimate IPs by indefinite semi-protection. Temporary full creation protection: Persistent recreation by the same user. Please also note that this user has created a sister (deleted) article CIeNET technologies which should receive the same treatment if the request is granted. I see short term protection as valid. Pending changes or block. An SPA, User:MalibuSurfKing, has appeared sporadically since September 2012 to prod this BLP or to remove key details from it. Dempsey is a journalist who wrote a book about the murder of Meredith Kercher. As a result, she came under attack on the Web from anonymous people who disagreed with her conclusions. The attacks have been sustained, sexist and very undermining. Within that context, it's a concern that one account keeps appearing to claim she isn't notable enough for an article. I'd therefore like to ask that an admin consider either applying pending changes so that MalibuSurfKing is unable to make further changes, or to block the account as an SPA causing BLP problems. Many thanks, SlimVirgin (talk) 01:45, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    temporary semi-protection: - IP edits against community consensus.--BabbaQ (talk) 18:38, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It is not against community consensus. Please see talk page: "She is claiming self defence, the trail has not yet finished yet you say it is a 'fact' that he was murdered. How do you know this??" Thanks. 87.232.1.48 (talk) 18:59, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Are we honestly going trough the same procedure as yesterday. The article was protected at the article name Murder of.. for a reason.--BabbaQ (talk) 19:00, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the reason is because you requested it citing an ongoing discussion in the talk page. The discussion has reached a consensus. You have not added any points to support your position, just keep saying "consensus" which is now in favour of "death of" if you see the talk page. So lets go with the current consensus and not your view. You aren't even contributing to the discussion any more, just being very stubborn. Please let it go, thanks 87.232.1.48 (talk) 19:10, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    Semi-protected - action taken and protected already.--BabbaQ (talk) 20:42, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection: High level of IP vandalism. I have looked back in the history as far as november and the page is recieving persistent vandalism many times a month. I can't work out how far back it has to be reverted to. But there are "endemic and endless vandalism problems" too much for me to pick out. Please lock the page so that no further vandalism is done. And ask an admin to find a suitable older version to revert the page to. Main points to notice are buddhism is currently written as 1.9 billion, which it should not be. And past vandalism is continually putting christianity as 3.6 billion and islam as 2.1 billion which they also are not, although they have currently been corrected in the first table. In the "Adherents.com estimates" section, it still shows christianity at 3.6 billion and islam at 2.1 billion. So these need to be corrected. Also the first table is called "four largest religions". But it lists five religions which doesn't add up. These and other things are continually being edited and reverted over the past few months. It seems a battle between several people. So correction and locking is necessary in my view. 2.97.34.125 (talk) 18:42, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite semi-protection: Article is the long term target of single edit (most often IP) editors who object to the inclusion of the word Basque in reference to Elcano's ethnicity. The fact is referenced and ought to be non-controversial. This page has had time limited protection before but I'm requesting indefinite protection because this is really wasting a lot of time that could be spent better elsewhere. Akerbeltz (talk) 16:32, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite semi-protection: Article (one of several on Sri Lanka schools) has been the subject of long term IP edit warring, often accompanied by personal attacks on User:Cossde. Indefinite semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – Because It's a high risk template. Any word missing can break this template. Also can break the assessment of the hole project. So before anything this page should be semi-protected. Pratyya (Hello!) 14:25, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's far from high-risk, relatively new and isn't transcluded anywhere enough times. tutterMouse (talk) 18:02, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Declined I agree with TutterMouse here. Most templates can break with any word missing. The "high risk" means "high risk of significant damage if changed." Here, if something changes, it just messes up a number of user pages and talk pages. Qwyrxian (talk) 03:53, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Current requests for unprotection

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin at their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

    • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
    • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Consider the edit warring noticeboard – This is a case of possible edit-warring by one or two users. Miniapolis 16:02, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection. Protection based on false reporting by a user with own agenda/POV. The controversy has already been made by another scientist's claim, and it was in the news. We can't use our own POV to go into establishing whether the claim itself is valid or not. 46.167.245.138 (talk) 08:25, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent sockpuppetry – Can we change this to Semi protection, I'm the original filer and I thought I asked for that and if I didn't was a mistake. A SPI will be filed in a little bit. . Hell In A Bucket (talk) 04:33, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Done Semi-protected for 2 weeks (see above). Miniapolis 15:56, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for edits to a protected page

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.
