- January 19 – ECOWAS forces, including troops from Senegal, Ghana, and Nigeria, intervene in the Gambia's political crisis to force longtime President Yahya Jammeh to step down after losing the December 2016 elections to Adama Barrow.[2]
- January 21 – Millions of people worldwide join the Women's March in response to the inauguration of Donald Trump. 420 marches were reported in the U.S. and 168 in other countries, becoming the largest single-day protest in American history and the largest worldwide protest in recent history.[3]
- January 26 – Scientists at Harvard University report the first creation of metallic hydrogen in a laboratory.[4][5]
- January 27 – Worldwide controversy results after United States president Donald Trump signs an executive order restricting travel and immigration from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.[6][7]

- February 11 – North Korea prompts international condemnation by test firing a ballistic missile across the Sea of Japan.[8]

- Park Geun-hye is removed as President of South Korea by the Constitutional Court.[9]
- The UN warns that the world is facing the biggest humanitarian crisis since World War II, with up to 20 million people at risk of starvation and famine in Yemen, Somalia, South Sudan and Nigeria.[10]
- March 29 – The United Kingdom invokes Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union, beginning the formal EU withdrawal process.[11][12]
- March 30 – SpaceX conducts the world’s first reflight of an orbital class rocket.[13][14]

- April 6 – In response to a suspected chemical weapons attack on a rebel-held town, the U.S. military launches 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at an air base in Syria. Russia describes the strikes as an "aggression", adding they significantly damage U.S.–Russia ties.[15]
May
- May 12 – Computers around the world are hit by a large-scale ransomware cyberattack,[16] which goes on to affect at least 150 countries.[17]

- June 10 – The 2017 World Expo will open in Astana, Kazakhstan.[18]
- September 15 – The spacecraft Cassini-Huygens, after having studied Saturn for 13 years, will be disposed of by plunging into Saturn's atmosphere.[19]
- December – The ESA's CHEOPS exoplanet-hunting satellite will be launched, the first in the agency's long-term Cosmic Vision programme.[20]
- The European Extreme Light Infrastructure project intends to complete its nuclear physics research hub, housing the world's most powerful laser in Romania in 2017.[21]
- The United States plans to deploy additional missile interceptors on its Pacific coast by 2017 to defend against North Korean ballistic missiles.[22]
- International scientists intend to complete the world's first fully synthetic yeast, intended for use in the production of medicines and biofuels, by 2017.[23]
