AirPower is an unreleased wireless charging mat designed by Apple Inc. It was initially previewed on September 12, 2017 at an Apple media event at the Steve Jobs Theater.[1][2] Originally intended to be released in 2018, the AirPower no longer has an announced release date, possibly due to issues with development.
It is currently based on the Qi standard, and is designed to charge multiple devices simultaneously, this feature is not a supported feature of the Qi standard, however.[3][4] Apple claims it is working towards incorporating this ability into the Qi-standard.[5]
History
On September 12, 2018, immediately after Apple's 'Gather Round' media event, Apple removed almost all mentions of the AirPower from its website.[6] There were reportedly several development issues that led to this decision, such as heat management, inter-device communication and speed, and mechanical and interference issues, which supposedly led to the device's development being cancelled internally, although the device has not been confirmed to be cancelled. It has been suggested that the AirPower device will have less complex features than originally presented when released.[7]
In January 2019, media outlets reported that AirPower may have entered production.[8]
Compatibility
AirPower is intended to be compatible with the following devices:[7][9]
- 2017 iPhones (8, 8 Plus, and X) and newer
- Apple Watch Series 3 and newer
- AirPods Wireless Charging Case (not yet released)
