The Daihatsu Sigra (Japanese: ダイハツ・シグラ, Daihatsu Shigura) is a mini MPV designed by Daihatsu and manufactured by Astra Daihatsu in Indonesia since 2016. The Sigra is also sold by Toyota as the Toyota Calya (Japanese: トヨタ・カリヤ, Toyota Kariya). It shares the platform with the Daihatsu Ayla, Toyota Agya/Wigo and Perodua Axia.[1] It sits below the Avanza and Xenia and competes with the Datsun Go+. It was unveiled on 2 August 2016 and launched at the 24th Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show on 11 August 2016. Both cars are manufactured at the Karawang plant, which the company claims have 94% local content.[1][3]

The name "Calya" was taken from the Sanskrit word meaning "perfect", while "Sigra" means "fast response".[4]

Design

The car's design was based on Daihatsu's UFC-3 concept car that was shown at the 22nd Indonesia International Motor Show in September 2014. Some styling details are shared between the UFC-3 and Sigra/Calya, such as the side window shape and some of the exterior details, although the overall profile have been toned down. The Calya has a similar trapezoidal front air dam design from the UFC-3, which is similar in style to the 2015 Avanza Veloz. Meanwhile, the Sigra uses a different design. The rear lamps of the Calya and some variants of the Sigra are similar in design to the second generation Innova.[1]

Engines

Both Calya and Sigra are powered by a 1.2 L 3NR-VE I4 petrol engine that produces a claimed 65 kW (87 hp; 88 PS) at 6,000 rpm and 108 N⋅m (80 lbf⋅ft) of torque at 4,200 rpm, which is mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The 1.0 L 1KR-VE I3 petrol engine option that produces a claimed 49 kW (66 hp; 67 PS) at 6,000 rpm and 89 N⋅m (66 lbf⋅ft) of torque at 4,400 rpm is also available exclusively in the Sigra.

Some technologies used in the 1.2 L engine are:

  • The application of intake valve type roller rocker arm, which reduces the friction produced when the camshaft is running.
  • The application of Dual VVT-i system, which adjusts timing on both intake and exhaust camshafts.
  • Improved cylinder head design.
  • Longer intake valve, which improves lower-end torque.[5]

For the 1.0 L engine, besides the addition of VVT-i from the previous 1KR-DE engine used in 2013–2017 Ayla/Agya, the compression ratio of the engine has been increased from 11.0:1 to 11.5:1. A high-tumble intake port, a longer intake manifold and a micro spray injector has also been added to the engine. The valve lifters' surface roughness has been reduced by as much as 90%. All these measures are combined to improve fuel efficiency.[3][6]

Trim levels

The Sigra is available in four different trim levels: D, M, X and R. The D and M trims are powered by the 1.0 L engine and only available with 5-speed manual transmission, whilst the X and R trims are powered by the 1.2 L engine and available with 5-speed manual transmission and 4-speed automatic transmission. The Deluxe variant of the X and R trims are also available. The Calya is available in E and G trims, which are powered by the 1.2 L engine and available with 5-speed manual transmission and 4-speed automatic transmission.
