Roy Moore sexual misconduct

Hi Coffee, thanks for applying the discretionary sanctions to the Roy Moore sexual misconduct article. I had already applied them under the BLP case authority, but the page must have been moved without the page notice again. I’m fine with your sanctions as well since they are the exact same, but I didn’t know what to do. Yours is likely in a clearer subject area, so it might be worth rescinding mine.
Also, you’re probably interested in the parameter conversation at Template talk:Post-1932 American politics discretionary sanctions page restrictions. If you’re still not back, feel free to ignore this, but thought it best to post. All the best, TonyBallioni (talk) 14:37, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Merry Christmas!

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays
From Stave one of Dickens A Christmas Carol

Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail. Mind! I don’t mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a door-nail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country’s done for. You will therefore permit me to repeat, emphatically, that Marley was as dead as a door-nail.

So you see even Charles was looking for a reliable source :-) Thank you for your contributions to the 'pedia. ~ MarnetteD|Talk 00:34, 24 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I think your work as an admin is consistent and fair. You work in very contentious areas where most editors prefer to avoid and I can only assume most admins would prefer to avoid. You continue to do so while being targeted by a number of editors. This should either have a chilling effect or just be so tiring that you just quit. But you soldier on. This is very commendable. X1\ HughD sock account.

Coffee, I saw that you blocked X1\ as a sock account. As the person who initiated the investigation I'm no longer certain they are the same person. The writing style is different now that I've read more more and appears to include some non English entries. To the best of my knowledge the investigation hasn't been closed. Given the editor came in with a very good understanding of how Wikipedia works I tend to believe there was a previous account but I have no proof of that. Anyway, I feel I had to let you know in good conscience. Springee (talk) 11:28, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Springee: A CU had requested admin action, noting technical inconclusiveness. However, the clerk (@QEDK: noted that they were behaviorally the same. I took action on that basis, but as you've laid out some decent doubts here I'll recheck the block immediately. Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 15:48, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Springee: I'm going to need you to be more specific here. I've placed the block on hold, and from what it appears (from my discussions with them) the clerk read the evidence differently, than you are now. Could you provide some diffs, perhaps, which might highlight the differences you see between the accounts? Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 16:47, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Coffee, if the clerks think the editor is a sock then I will trust them. I'm just not as sure based on the way X1\ replied vs the way known HughD socks replied. Basically I started with a hunch then searched for evidence. I'm now not as certain about the hunch that this is HughD (I still suspect this isn't the editor's first account). Sorry, that is wishy washy. I would deffer to the opinions of the clerks. Should this discussion be moved to the investigation page? Springee (talk) 17:14, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Springee: Well for now I'm leaning towards unblocking the account, with this much reasonable doubt appearing to come from you. But part of me is also leaning on waiting for the user to make an unblock request of any form. @TonyBallioni and Black Kite: What are your ideas? Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 17:30, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In looking through the previously confirmed socks, I see enough of a difference that I think unblocking makes sense, especially since the clerk appears to be fine with it at this point. TonyBallioni (talk) 17:46, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@TonyBallioni, Springee, QEDK, Bbb23, and Black Kite: The block on the account has been eraser Undone. Thank you all for your help in this matter! Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 18:02, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

List of cinema halls in Thiruvananthapuram

Hi, This is about the recently merged article List of cinema halls in Thiruvananthapuram. The article was merged with Thiruvananthapuram by creating a new section called 'Film Industry'. This doesn't go with the standardized section contents as in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian cities. So I moved the the section to Culture of Thiruvananthapuram, which seemed more appropriate. But as the result of the discussion was to merge to Thiruvananthapuram, is this okay? AG47 Talk 14:21, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Invalid license specified in OTRS template

Hi. THIS EDIT you made last year specified an invalid value {{ConfirmationOTRS}} for |license=cc4. Note the error message on Talk:Kamnoetvidya Science Academy:

CC BY-SA 4.0 is not a compatible license.

Can you fix it? Thanks, wbm1058 (talk) 21:32, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Wbm1058, yes, this caused issues earlier this year that I either had to revdel or I had to decline to restore text. We had it create an error message so OTRS agents would be alerted that CC BY-SA 4.0 is not a compatible license for text with WMF projects. Coffee was not active when we made this change. I think the reason we decided to keep that ticket there when we were reviewing it was because it makes it easier for admins who work in copyright but might not have OTRS access to understand the claims someone is making, and verify if the license is compatible or incompatible. TonyBallioni (talk) 21:36, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Found the conversation here, heh, it was right before I got my bit so I had to rely on Diannaa for that article. Anyway: the reason that I didn't remove it after JJMC89 made it an error was to let admins know what license the text was should someone try to get it restored again. That wasn't discussed there, though. TonyBallioni (talk) 21:43, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the background, Tony. You and Coffee are both listed as current OTRS members; I've never had that bit. Can you sort out the status of Kamnoetvidya Science Academy, between yourselves, please? I don't have access to the private OTRS conversations, so wouldn't know whether the license could be changed, or content needs to be removed. Noting that Coffee has been online since my post here, and hasn't responded yet. I shouldn't need to ping an admin on their own talk page. Just want to make sure Coffee didn't assume that Tony was handling it. Thanks, wbm1058 (talk) 18:31, 15 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Profanity is permitted

Hey Coffee, #%&^$! /%&@@#! Not against you, of course!

I see you have a nice name. I also see you have nominated a DYK hook. I submitted one on 9 February and it is still unreviewed. Awwwww. Your hook said you didn't do the QPQ yet. Would you consider mine, which is the WestJet Encore article submitted for DYK on 9 February? Vanguard10 (talk) 04:15, 15 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for beginning your review of the February 9 DYK nomination of WestJet Encore. I have added more references to supplement references that are press releases. In some cases, the press release is more authoritative than a news source because reporters are often not too experienced in aviation and/or airlines and get details wrong. Still, I know that Wikipedia tends not to like primary sources so I am complying with this by adding a second reference to some of the sentences that currently have citations.

A few areas are more difficult to get non-primary sources, such as frequent flyer program information. I, myself, think frequent flyer program information is a bit too commercial, but it is an established part of airline articles per Wikiproject Airlines. I have tried to make the WestJet Encore article less of an ad by not having prose that sounds like an advertisement and keeping the frequent flyer section to the minimum.

Would you look at the DYK nomination again to see if it can be approved? Vanguard10 (talk) 04:27, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Vanguard10: I will happily re-review it and let you know. Have you thought about checking on mine, there seems to be some confusion as to the proper understanding of DYK hooks allowed for OTD deaths...? Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 04:33, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. I will look at it. I think it is of the female civil rights leader who used to be a farmer and whose livestock were poisoned because she tried to register to vote. Vanguard10 (talk) 04:41, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have commented on your DYK nomination. However, I am awaiting a response to whether Alex has started a review or merely made a comment. If Alex is not reviewing it or does not respond in 23 hours, I will review it. On a cursory look, it looks good for an approved DYK nomination. Vanguard10 (talk) 05:11, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have started to review it but am not finished with the review. I am sort of a DYK newbie. I am having a little trouble with the copy vio detector. It shows a high percentage, which is not desirable. However, manual review doesn't confirm plagiarism. Would you give me advice on how to evaluate this problem?
I also see in Women's History Encyclopedia, one of the citations used for the original hook, where it reads that no medical consent was obtained for a hysterectomy when she was operated on for a uterine tumor. This makes the source potentially biased, in my opinion. Surgery can sometimes lead to change in surgical plan. For example, if cancer is found, sometimes the surgery is changed so the cancer is removed. This concern over the citation doesn't affect the DYK process, though, as the part supporting the hook appears to be sound.
Another DYK newbie question; does the review recommend a hook, particularly if one of the presented hooks is stronger, appears more interesting, or for other reasons?

Happy, happy 10th!

About the hook (ALT-0), I looked again in the article and in the Nation citation. Are you sure she was beaten for attempting to register to vote? It looks like she was beaten after becoming field secretary for voter registration and welfare programs for the SCLC. Could you modify the hook or let me know that I misread something? I'm writing here because there can be some discussion outside of the DYK hook, in case I'm mistaken. Vanguard10 (talk) 06:11, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Vanguard10: I fixed the hook. I misread this source a bit and conflated the two it seems. The new hook is just as attention grabbing though, and a great fact to state on the main page in my opinion. Anyways, thanks for the help thus far! Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 09:02, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject

Thank you for creating and spearheading the Civil Rights Movement wikiproject. Long overdue, important, and hopefully it will give a platform for more editors to come in and work on the civil rights pages, both historical pages and concept pages (if it includes the pages on nonviolence in the project's scope). Nice work! Randy Kryn (talk) 13:23, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Randy Kryn: Thanks! It amazed me that no such project already existed. I hope to get decent participation from folks after I tag all the relevant pages and whatnot. Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 13:53, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It has been mentioned but nobody ever acted on it until you have. It takes someone to give something the push over the hill, and you've done that. There are a few off-and-on regulars on the pages (and there are lots of pages, see the 1950s-1960s CRM template), but I think the key is getting new editors to commit to such a project and add to the pages and data already collected. This could really take off, and maybe get the main CRM page in some kind of good shape (I've hesitated working full-tilt on it, as I'm fairly biased on one viewpoint of "how-it-went-down"). If I was one of the editors who threw around barnstars I'd toss a few your way for creating and already working on this project. Randy Kryn (talk) 14:09, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

One of my tps want to handle this? Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 21:13, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) It's a generic shared IP, very sporadic history, two edits in the last six months, no warnings for a year, no serious block log. I don't think any admin would block for any length (if at all) at AIV. Unless they repeat the event in the next day or so, this can wait until you get back, IMO. -- zzuuzz (talk) 21:44, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, I seem to have edit-conflicted with the comment above; @Zzuuzz: I'm not sure if you intended to remove that comment or not, if you did then I apologize for restoring it. I see nothing constructive coming out of that IP in more than the last year, and it seems clear from their last edits before being blocked in February 2017 that the address is not dynamic, or it's been assigned to the same user for a very long time. Coffee, I am curious why you blocked them for 3 months but then unblocked right away? Not that it matters in my decision to block, I'm just curious. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 21:55, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I believe it was due to the low edit-count, but I'm not entirely certain. Thank you for handling this matter! Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 22:00, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – March 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2018).

Administrator changes

added Lourdes
removed AngelOfSadnessBhadaniChris 73CorenFridayMidomMike V
† Lourdes has requested that her admin rights be temporarily removed, pending her return from travel.

Guideline and policy news

  • The autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) is scheduled to end on 14 March 2018. The results of the research collected can be read on Meta Wiki.
  • Community ban discussions must now stay open for at least 24 hours prior to being closed.
  • A change to the administrator inactivity policy has been proposed. Under the proposal, if an administrator has not used their admin tools for a period of five years and is subsequently desysopped for inactivity, the administrator would have to file a new RfA in order to regain the tools.
  • A change to the banning policy has been proposed which would specify conditions under which a repeat sockmaster may be considered de facto banned, reducing the need to start a community ban discussion for these users.

Technical news

  • CheckUsers are now able to view private data such as IP addresses from the edit filter log, e.g. when the filter prevents a user from creating an account. Previously, this information was unavailable to CheckUsers because access to it could not be logged.
  • The edit filter has a new feature contains_all that edit filter managers may use to check if one or more strings are all contained in another given string.

Obituaries

  • Bhadani (Gangadhar Bhadani) passed away on 8 February 2018. Bhadani joined Wikipedia in March 2005 and became an administrator in September 2005. While he was active, Bhadani was regarded as one of the most prolific Wikipedians from India.

Administrators' newsletter – April 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2018).

Administrator changes

added 331dotCordless LarryClueBot NG
removed Gogo DodoPb30SebastiankesselSeicerSoLando

Guideline and policy news

  • Administrators who have been desysopped due to inactivity are now required to have performed at least one (logged) administrative action in the past 5 years in order to qualify for a resysop without going through a new RfA.
  • Editors who have been found to have engaged in sockpuppetry on at least two occasions after an initial indefinite block, for whatever reason, are now automatically considered banned by the community without the need to start a ban discussion.
  • The notability guideline for organizations and companies has been substantially rewritten following the closure of this request for comment. Among the changes, the guideline more clearly defines the sourcing requirements needed for organizations and companies to be considered notable.
  • The six-month autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) ended on 14 March 2018. The post-trial research report has been published. A request for comment is now underway to determine whether the restrictions from ACTRIAL should be implemented permanently.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee is considering a change to the discretionary sanctions procedures which would require an editor to appeal a sanction to the community at WP:AE or WP:AN prior to appealing directly to the Arbitration Committee at WP:ARCA.

Miscellaneous

  • A discussion has closed which concluded that administrators are not required to enable email, though many editors suggested doing so as a matter of best practice.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team has released the Interaction Timeline. This shows a chronologic history for two users on pages where they have both made edits, which may be helpful in identifying sockpuppetry and investigating editing disputes.

Abernathy thesis

...and, you're back! At least for now. I'll find the date of the Abernathy thesis and add it back in (memories, I was the first researcher to reference the thesis, being given a copy by an acquaintance and then checking with Abernathy to make sure it was real, and later Garrow, who hadn't heard of it, asked me for a copy which he used, with Abernathy's permission, in his 1989 volumes. Haven't mentioned this discovery and publication circle in many moons.) There has been much commotion and a gallant and efficient defense by Mitchumch on the project page. Randy Kryn (talk) 15:42, 3 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Randy Kryn: At least for the time being, I have a lot of real life things going on at the moment, but I wanted to get this GAR done. I plan to be back in the thick of the project in a couple weeks time. Many thanks to @Mitchumch: and yourself for holding the fort down while I'm busy elsewhere! As far as the thesis thing... I figured it was a legitimate claim, the only issue was that the lack of a source was one of the factors holding up the GAR... if you find a source don't hesitate to add it back in. - P.S. Good to see you! Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 16:19, 3 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

In the ongoing discussion at Wings of Glory talk page he has been asked to remove his close and reopen the discussion. Wings is not an administrator and has made a huge decision on his own (Fish&Karate did not post on the page as a 'seconding' of the close, although his name was placed there). This is confusing at the moment, so maybe before taking it further it should both be sorted out and worded very well. A yikes type of decision. Thanks. The decision was reversed on the project's name, which is back to upper-case. Hopefully the portal decision will also have review and reversal at some point in the process. Congrats on the Abernathy GA. Randy Kryn (talk) 14:47, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Retirement

Bummer. Just when things were taking off on the WikiProject, after some obstruction and logs-in-the-road. But wikibreaks are good, and I hope that after not being here becomes as habit-forming as being here, at some point you'll be looking up something on Wikipedia, see an easily correctable but major mistake, and grab your tool belt again. Good luck, and only the best wishes for someone I've only met in the past couple of months but have found to be full of caring and integrity towards the correct depiction of history that Wikipedians accept responsibility for. The Original Barnstar
For your years of tireless service. Ad Orientem (talk) 16:41, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to see you leave and I hope you will be back after you have taken some time off. I know the place can get stressful. -Ad Orientem (talk) 16:41, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

We lose more and more of the old guard every month. Some just from tiring of the grind that is wikipedia, and some because the goalposts have moved with how the encyclopedia was being built and how administration handled things in days past. Little appreciation with the hours put in when compared to new editors who run roughshod with no scruples at all, and seemingly little care from higher-ups in how to deal with them. And it's the articles that also suffer because of this. These newer editors that survive will someday be older editors, who will be shocked that they aren't listened to by a newer and even more changed group of peers (and not for the better). A very tough environment to wade through today. I hope you make it back Coffee. Fyunck(click) (talk) 23:31, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to see you go. "Don't take everything so personally" is my advice to you. I hope will you reconsider your retirement and do return to the project.– Gilliam (talk) 09:41, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Coffee,

I have removed your block. I do not know the circumstances behind your decision to leave or block yourself, but all blocks must have a policy reason for the block. I'm sorry you felt the need to leave, and I hope you eventually come back once feelings have cooled down. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 19:02, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WP:SELFBLOCK is permitted on the blocking policy page. ~Awilley (talk) 21:26, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's my understanding as well, although I do hope Coffee decides to come back.- MrX 🖋 21:33, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
He did block himself, and I unblocked him as there as no valid policy reason for the block to be indefinite. If he doesn't want to come back, he doesn't have to, but having an indefinite block with no solid policy reason for it is ridiculous. Also, WP:SELFBLOCK states that "Typically, such requests are declined." The block is in the log now, so there's no reason for it to continue. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:16, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I wish you well, Coffee...we all need a break from the drudgery once in a while. I remain confident that you will survive the storm ☈ that hovers overhead, and will return to WP refreshed and ready to go. In the interim, you will be missed. Atsme📞📧 23:51, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nihonjoe, You should have simply let it be. His self-block wasn't hurting you or the encyclopedia. From where I stand, it looks like rubbing salt in a wound.- MrX 🖋 00:18, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@MrX: Well, we obviously disagree. Coffee blocked himself in a moment of anger, with no rational or valid reason for doing so. His blocking comment makes that perfectly clear. Unblocking him doesn't "rub salt" in any wound any more than leaving the block in place assuages it. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 00:29, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Anyone getting a bit of déjà vu here ? .... Didn't all this happen in February ? ..., This'll happen every month unless someone goes to Arbcom and puts a stop to it. –Davey2010Talk 00:34, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, this seems a different set of circumstances. Coffee came back and spent many hours organizing the WikiProject:Civil Rights Movement and the portal. He spent his editing time there, within that project, by creating and improving articles and bringing them up to "good" status. During most of this, and more recently with RM's, an editor or two have tried to put obstacles in the way of the energy and enthusiasm Coffee put into this work. That could be draining, and although Coffee says he needs a break from Wikipedia maybe he just needs to be left in peace for a few weeks or months to regain the interest to further his work here. Arbcom? I'm new to the Coffee saga, but this editor apparently has ruffled some feathers here and there. His leaving wasn't about that. He was trying to do something very good, and succeeding, and then had enough of the counter-effort for awhile. Hopefully he is climbing a tree somewhere, or skipping rocks in a river. It's spring, and there is a lot to experience off site, and he, after giving many years of service here, may feel like taking in a wider range of "more" for awhile. Randy Kryn (talk) 00:58, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I have to respectfully disagree - Someone disagrees with what he does or says, He doesn't like that - He gets in a temper/upset- He leaves for a month - He comes back supposedly as this reformed character - Someone disagrees with what he does or says - and then it all starts over again, It happened in February, I believe it happened in January and December and guess what - It's happening now,
Unrelated question but who climbs trees ? ...... Maybe he's had enough of being a human and wants to be an orangutan who knows. –Davey2010Talk 01:17, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You don't climb trees? What kind of great ape are you? Coffee is volatile, so what, he gets things done. The climbing trees thing is a way of saying that enjoying nature is one way to take a wikibreak. Randy Kryn (talk) 01:22, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
A lazy one apparently , Actually I attempted to climb one when I was a child ..... but then wimped out .... and then watched my friend being stuck in said tree and having to jump from quite a height .... See not climbing trees is a good thing :), –Davey2010Talk 02:31, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'll play bad cop. There's clearly a pattern of conduct un-becoming of an admin here. If Coffee returns (and I hope he does), he should seriously consider resigning as an administrator before ARBCOM becomes involved. power~enwiki (π, ν) 03:04, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I emphatically second that, including the hope he'll return, but only if he resigns adminship. Coffee clearly has much to contribute – witness his work on civil rights topics – but there's something about admin work that makes him lose his cool. He'd be happier, and could better serve the encyclopedia, if he just gives that up and doesn't look back. EEng 04:00, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'd prefer him resigning but that won't happen hence my Arbcom comment. –Davey2010Talk 04:04, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thirded. This retirement smacks of avoiding the near-inevitable desysopping that his misuse of admin tools and hysterical behaviour was going to incur. I would suggest desysopping him anyway - either a) he’s never coming back (doubt it), in which case the account does not need administrative privileges, or b) he does come back, in which case the account should not have administrative privileges, as his behaviour amply demonstrates. I try and stay away from this sort of nonsense but I am baffled how someone with such a short fuse, ownership issues, and disregard for others got to become, and then to remain, an admin. One post politely querying an action and I got a wholly undeserved tirade. Fish+Karate 05:47, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've asked at WP:BN whether Coffee's actions/statements here can be considered a voluntary resignation. power~enwiki (π, ν) 13:23, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I rarely comment on drama-infused incidents but I can't help but notice this has happened more than once. That's not what bothers me in this case, though. The fact that both the block log and the retirement tagging summaries are practically personal attacks is completely unbecoming of an administrator. If he decides to come back again, I sincerely hope he is able to improve his ability to keep his cool under pressure and/or do a confirmation RfA/recall. It's disappointing that such a once-enthusiastic editor has retired because I think they still care about the project and can contribute constructively in many areas, just not in an administrative sense. Anarchyte (work | talk) 13:26, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If Coffee decides to return we can continue this discussion. Until that time we should probably allow him to rest in peace. ~Awilley (talk) 16:41, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Awilley - Whilst I can understand adminship is stressful at the best of times if he cannot hack it then he shouldn't be one (This is not a one off but instead a growing pattern).... He returned a whole 10 HOURS later to re-indef himself ..... To me that alone speaks volumes, Without commenting on his private life and all that I feel him not being an admin would IMHO do him the world of good, Whether its Arbcom, BN, or himself-resignation IMHO something should be done even if it's a temporary thing, But I agree on your last part we should all give him some space for a bit. –Davey2010Talk 17:57, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Wish you back. O1lI0 (talk) 06:08, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This all seems a beautiful exercise in Anarchy from every angle from everyone involved. If this new ban is just simply not good enough a reason for a ban then unban him but reban indefinitely him for abusing his admin tools until such time as he addresses the matter with the arbitration committee.-Serialjoepsycho- (talk) 17:08, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – May 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2018).

Administrator changes

added None
removed ChochopkCoffeeGryffindorJimpKnowledge SeekerLankiveilPeridonRjd0060

Guideline and policy news

  • The ability to create articles directly in mainspace is now indefinitely restricted to autoconfirmed users.
  • A proposal is being discussed which would create a new "event coordinator" right that would allow users to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit.

Technical news

  • AbuseFilter has received numerous improvements, including an OOUI overhaul, syntax highlighting, ability to search existing filters, and a few new functions. In particular, the search feature can be used to ensure there aren't existing filters for what you need, and the new equals_to_any function can be used when checking multiple namespaces. One major upcoming change is the ability to see which filters are the slowest. This information is currently only available to those with access to Logstash.
  • When blocking anonymous users, a cookie will be applied that reloads the block if the user changes their IP. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. This currently only occurs when hard-blocking accounts.
  • The block notice shown on mobile will soon be more informative and point users to a help page on how to request an unblock, just as it currently does on desktop.
  • There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.

DYK for Ralph Abernathy

On 4 May 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Ralph Abernathy, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Ralph Abernathy (pictured), mentor and friend of Martin Luther King Jr., led a demonstration protesting the use of federal funds for the Apollo 11 project when many Americans lived in poverty? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Ralph Abernathy. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Ralph Abernathy), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
  • There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
  • It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.

Arbitration

  • A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Wikipedia (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Wikipedia between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.

Lebanon ECP AE review

Hi Coffee, I know you're not active, but I'm posting this here since I've asked that the community review Lebanon at AN [1]. This doesn't have anything to do with your particular actions, but is because a recent AE determined that Jordan as a whole didn't fall in the restriction. I hope all is well with you in real life. A cup of coffee for you!

This seemed appropriate and the least I can do for you. I tend to come and go, but I've always immensely enjoyed working with you and wanted to thank you for your work.

There are countless editors and even more readers who will never know the years of tireless service and effort you put into making this a better place. For that, thank you. I (selfishly) hope you come back, but regardless of where you go or decide to do, wish you nothing but the best. Mifter (talk) 03:10, 20 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
