On December 29, 2012, Mohun Bagan were barred from competing in the I-League for 2 years after a decision was taken by the I League core committee. All their results in the I-League were declared cancelled.
But within a few days, the ban was lifted for a fine of Rs. 2 Crore. The score tally of Mohun Bagan was re-set to zero,but Mohun Bagan performed well and were able to avoid relegation. In fact the performance in this phase was examplary and if the cancelled points were taken into account, Mohun Bagan would have finished amongst the first four or five. Among other decisions related to the contentious issue, no official from Mohun Bagan will be allowed to represent the club in AIFF or I-League meetings in the current calendar year. On 31 May 2015 they claimed their first ever [[I-League]] title by drawing 1-1 with Bengaluru FC to not only end their 5-year major trophy drought but also winning the national league after 13 years. They last won the [[National Football League]] in 2001-02 season.

They were recently given a congratulations letter by the former [[FIFA]] president [[Sepp Blatter]] after their I-League triumph of 2015 season.

The colours of Mohun Bagan AC have always been Maroon and Green. In recent times they have also included white stripes. It is from their history of the colour of their kits that they are also known as '''Sabooj Maroon Brigade''' ("Green and Maroon Brigade")

The current home jersey has green and white stripes on light maroon jersey. The shorts are white with stripes of maroon and green. The socks have white bands on maroon.

The current away jersey comprises green and maroon vertical lines on a white kit. The shorts are same as the home kit. The socks are all white.

The matches witness large audience attendance and rivalry between patrons.

Mohun Bagan Athletic Club (/mohon begən/) (Bengali : মোহন বাগান) is a professional football club based in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Established in 1889, it is one of the oldest football clubs in Asia and one of the most successful clubs in India.

Mohun Bagan was the first Indian club to win a major title, when they defeated the East Yorkshire Regiment, 2-1 to lift the 1911 IFA Shield. With 13 Federation Cup titles and 4 National League/I-League titles, Mohun Bagan is the most successful club in India in major national tournaments. The football team has also won Rovers Cup, Durand Cup, IFA Shield and the Calcutta Football League. In 1989, during the club`s centenary year, the Government of India issued a postage stamp to commemorate the 1911 victory of the team.[2][3] Mohun Bagan has played a vital part in contributing numerous players to the Indian national football team, especially in India's famous triumphs in 1951 and 1962 Asian Games.

The club contests the Kolkata Derby with their most fierce counterparts East Bengal F.C.

History

Origin And Early History (1889-1900)

During the late 1800s the Indian independence movement was well into its beginning and the widespread rebellion of the Indian nationalists fired the imagination of all the Indians in the country and to help the movement, three families Bose family (of Shyam Pukur), Mitra Family (of Faria Pukur) and the Sen Family (of Bagh Bazar) founded Mohun Bagan under the name Mohun Bagan Sporting Club on 15 August 1889.[4] Mohun Bagan’s first president was the eminent lawyer Bhupendra Nath Bose, a member one of the three founding families. Bose was also an important player in the Indian revolutionary movement and would become the president of Indian National Congress in 1914. The first meeting of the club was presided by Bhupendra Nath Bose himself and was held in 14, Balaram Ghosh Street of North Kolkata. The meeting featured some of the most famous people from the cream of Bengali society, including names like Jyotindra Nath Basu, Sir Bhupendra Nath Mitra, Girin Basu, Roybahadur Chunilal Basu, Dr.Manindra Nath Basu, Durga Charan Laha (Maharaja of Shyam Pukur), Rajendra Bhup Bahadur (Maharaja of Coochbehar) and Sir Rajendra Nath Mukhopadhyay. Situated in Faria Pukur Street, "Mohun Bagan Villa" the famous marble palace owned by Kirti Mitra of the Mitra family, served as the first ground, also inspiring name of the newly formed club.

Mohun Bagan Sporting club played their first football match in Mohun Bagan Villa ground against Eden Hindu Hostel the team list read - Girin Basu, Pramatha Nath Chattopadhyay, Sachin Bandhyopadhyay, Ram Goswami, Sarat Mitra, Hem Nath Sen, Nalin Basu, Upen Ghosh, Manindra Nath Basu, Manilal Sen, Manomoham Pandey, Probhas Mitra. Manilal Sen, the first captain of Mohun Bagan's football team, was a member of the founding Sen family and was also an accomplished cricketer. Right before the one year anniversary of the club professor F.J. Rhow asked whether the club had organized any rifle shooting or angling or other related activities and when the answer to that question was negative it was suggested that the club be renamed from Sporting to Athletic. The officials agreed and the club was officially renamed as Mohun Bagan Athletic Club.[4] By 1891 the club management had understood that their original ground was perhaps too small to play football and shifted their base to Shyam Pukur, aided by the Maharaja of Shyam Pukur.[4]

Four years after their birth, Mohun Bagan participated in their first tournament – the 1893 edition of Coochbehar Cup, making their debut against "C Company of Sussex Regiment". For rest of 1890s the club continued to participate in numerous local tournaments, with little success.[5] After the Calcutta Corporation opened the public square known as Shyam Square, the club was allotted space there along with Aryans and Baghbazar Club. Thus Shyam Square became the third ground for Mohun Bagan (1895–1900).[5]

Later History (1900-present)

Mohun Bagan won its first trophy in 1904 when they won Coochbehar Cup and then the club won it again in 1905.[6] In the same year Mohun Bagan reached the final of Gladstone Cup which was held in Chinsurah in which they defeated the reigning IFA Shield winners Dalhousie 6-1.[6] In 1906, Mohun Bagan registered more success when the club grabbed the Trades Cup, Gladstone Cup and Coochbehar Cup all in the same year. Then in 1907 Mohun Bagan again won Trades Cup and then they completed the triple by winning it again in 1908.

Mohun Bagan then created history by becoming the first Indian club to win the IFA Shield when they won it in 1911 against East Yorkshire Regiment by defeating them 2–1 despite the Mohun Bagan players playing in barefoot while East Yorkshire Regiment played with proper footballing equipment.[7][8] Mohun Bagan played their first match in first division of Calcutta Football League on May 15, 1915 against Calcutta Club.[9] Back then the Calcutta Football League was the number one football league in India. In 1937 Mohun Bagan played its first international match in against Englishton Corinthians of England.[9] In 1939 Mohun Bagan became the first ever Indian Calcutta Football League champion after a long awaiting 25 years.[9]

In 1943 Mohun Bagan again created history in Indian football by being the first team to implement an Insurance Scheme for the medical aid of the injured players.[9] Within one year a medical Board was also formed with some doctors. This year Mohun Bagan won the Calcutta Football League for the second time, gaining 39 points in 24 matches.[9] The club also grabbed the Trades Cup this year.[9] The next year Mohun Bagan won the league again.[9] In 1947 Mohun Bagan again won the IFA Shield.[10] Through that victory Mohun Bagan is the first Indian club to win IFA Shield after independence.[10] The club also won the Calcutta Football League again by defeating arch rival East Bengal.[10] Then in 1952 Mohun Bagan won the IFA Shield yet again.[10] In 1954 the club grabbed the double crown of Calcutta for the first time after winning the IFA Shield and First Division Calcutta Football League and thus also becoming the first club ever to do this.[10] They would also go on to do this again in 1960.[10] In 1977 the club created the history by being the first ever Indian football club to do the triple crown (IFA Shield, Durand Cup, and Rovers Cup) in the same year.[10]

In 1977 Mohun Bagan played a friendly match against the famous North American Soccer League club New York Cosmos which featured Pelé.[11] The match, which took place at Eden Gardens, had a match attendance of 80,000.[11] The match ended 2-2 and a lot of the Bagan players got a lot of praise by the star packed Cosmos.[11]

Mohun Bagan then made it to the final of the first ever Federation Cup in 1977 only to lose out to Indian Telephone Industries 1–0.[12] Mohun Bagan then made the final of the tournament again in 1978 only to share the trophy with their rivals East Bengal.[12] In 1980 Mohun Bagan once again made it to the final of the Federation Cup against East Bengal and again ended up sharing the cup after ending the game 1–1.[12] However, the next year in 1981 Mohun Bagan finally won their first Federation Cup after beating Mohammedan 2–0.[12] Mohun Bagan then won the tournament again a year later after defeating Mafatlal Hills 1–0.[12] Mohun Bagan than continued their run in the Federation Cup after winning two consecutive Federation Cups in 1986 and 1987 after defeating rivals East Bengal 1–0 and then Salgaocar in 1987.[12] Mohun Bagan then went on to win three consecutive Federation Cups from 1992 to 1994 after they defeated East Bengal, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Salgaocar 2–0, 1–0, and 3–0 on penalties respectively.[12]

In 1998 Mohun Bagan won the triple by winning the IFA Shield, Federation Cup and the National Football League for the first time.[13] In 2007 Mohun Bagan won the Indian Super Cup by defeating Dempo S.C. by a score of 4-0.[14] Then one year later in 2008 Mohun Bagan players got the opportunity to play against German international, Oliver Kahn in his official testimonial for FC Bayern Munich.[14] Along with Kahn, stars like Ze Roberto and Mark van Bommel were present in the Bayern team.[14] The match was played on May 27, 2008 at Salt Lake Stadium.[14]

On December 29, 2012, Mohun Bagan were barred from competing in the I-League for 2 years after a decision was taken by the I League core committee. All their results in the I-League were declared cancelled. But within a few days, the ban was lifted for a fine of Rs. 2 Crore. The score tally of Mohun Bagan was re-set to zero,but Mohun Bagan performed well and were able to avoid relegation. In fact the performance in this phase was examplary and if the cancelled points were taken into account, Mohun Bagan would have finished amongst the first four or five. Among other decisions related to the contentious issue, no official from Mohun Bagan will be allowed to represent the club in AIFF or I-League meetings in the current calendar year. On 31 May 2015 they claimed their first ever I-League title by drawing 1-1 with Bengaluru FC to not only end their 5-year major trophy drought but also winning the national league after 13 years. They last won the National Football League in 2001-02 season.

They were recently given a congratulations letter by the former FIFA president Sepp Blatter after their I-League triumph of 2015 season.

Colours

The colours of Mohun Bagan AC have always been Maroon and Green. In recent times they have also included white stripes. It is from their history of the colour of their kits that they are also known as Sabooj Maroon Brigade ("Green and Maroon Brigade")

The current home jersey has green and white stripes on light maroon jersey. The shorts are white with stripes of maroon and green. The socks have white bands on maroon.

Club rivalries

Kolkata Derby

Kolkata Derby is the football match between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal F.C. . The two clubs currently meet at least 3 times a year, 2 in I-league and once in state league each. and more often if the clubs meet in other competitions like Federation Cup, IFA Shield, Durand Cup etc. Rivalry between the two teams is 89 years old, and features in the FIFA's classic derby list. The matches witness large audience attendance and rivalry between patrons.

Mohun Bagan also had a keen rivalry with Mohammedan SC till 2000s but the importance of this match has fizzled out in past one and half decades.

The Salt Lake Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Kolkata, West Bengal. The stadium is the second largest non-auto racing stadium in the world and the largest in India. It is currently used for mainly football matches. The stadium was built in 1984 and holds 120,000 people and has three tiers

The stadium includes a unique running track, electronic scoreboard, artificial turf, floodlighting arrangement, air conditioned VIP rest room and Conference Hall along with Medical Room & Doping Control Room.[15] Other features of the stadium are boxes for TV along with several platforms for TV cameras, press boxes, air conditioned player's changing rooms.

The Salt Lake Stadium hosts the home games of Mohun Bagan in I-League.

The Mohun Bagan Ground is another stadium in Kolkata, India. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Mohun Bagan in Calcutta Football League matches. The stadium holds 25,000 people. The stadium is currently undergoing modernisation with new bucket seats and other players and supporter friendly amenities being developed. This is the only club stadium in Kolkata which has flood lights in place to facilitate evening kickoffs[16]

In 2007, Mohun Bagan became the first Indian club to have its own mascot. The name of its mascot is "Baggu", a 'cute name' for tiger in Bengali.[17]

Mohun Bagan have historically enjoyed the privilege of possessing the biggest fan base in India and one of the biggest, globally. The fans known as Mariners have the distinction of the highest attendance in I league matches. Currently, Mohun Bagan supporters run their own fan site for Mohun Bagan, known as Sabuj Maroon Swapno and Mohunbaganclub.

Mohun Bagan fans have garnered considerable attention in recent seasons. As per official statistics, Mohun Bagan had the highest average attendance in 2013-14 season. AIFF reported an average home crowd of 17,068, despite the team struggling with relegation for most of the season.[18] In the 2014-15 I-League season, their vocal support in away matches in Pune, Mumbai as well as Bangalore was a phenomenon previously unseen in Indian football. The Economic Times, a leading Indian newspaper, reported that the club had an average attendance of over 35,000 in their home matches, possibly an I-League record. Over 21,000 attended the league decider between Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC in Bangalore, of this ".. over 8,000 were away fans, travelling from as far as Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune to watch the game," noted Sunando Dhar, chief executive officer of the I-League in the same article.[19] Their royally grand reception, when by some estimates, over 200,000 fans gathered to greet the I League 2014-15 clinching squad (on their way back to Kolkata from Bengaluru) has been dubbed as "legendary" "unparalleled" and "surreal" by the Press as well as football historians.[20]

Controversies

In 2012, the team walked off the field while game was going on with their arch rival East Bengal FC. One of their key players, Syed Rahim Nabi was hit by a stone hurled from the stands. Nabi sustained a fracture in between the jaw and his right ear and needed four stitches. The incident happened at the interval, a couple of minutes after Harmanjot Khabra headed in to put East Bengal ahead from a Mehtab Hossain free kick. AIFF had decided to ban them after the incident but eventually changed their decision to impose a penalty fine about 2 crores.[29]

Mohun Bagan Day

From 2001, 29 July is celebrated as "Mohun Bagan Day", commemorating the date of the IFA Shield victory in 1911. On 29 July, every year fans as well as former and current players converge on the club premises to celebrate this historic day.

On Mohun Bagan Day, the club also awards "Mohun Bagan Ratna", a prestigious prize to recognize the contributions made by legends of the yesteryears to the club. Till date, mostly former players have received this award while in two cases the award has been bestowed upon people who contributed to the club as official or coach.[30]

Accolades And Landmarks

Padma Shri

Till date, only five footballers have been awarded with the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest official awards for civilians. Mohun Bagan is the only Indian football club which is connected to each of these five players.

In 1962 Gostha Pal became the first ever footballer to win the award while Sailen Manna achieved the feat in 1971. Both of these footballers had spent almost entire senior career in Mohun Bagan and captained the club for multiple seasons.

Chuni Goswami, who spent his entire playing life at the club, was the third man to win the Padma Shri in 1983. PK Banerjee won the award in 1990. Although Banerjee spent most of his career in Railways teams the only major club he played for was Mohun Bagan, where he played a few matches on loan. Banerjee is also one of the most successful coaches in Mohun Bagan’s history, having coached them on a number of occasions.

Baichung Bhutia, the last footballer to win Padma Shri also spent multiple seasons in Mohun Bagan and was the club captain for two seasons.

Landmarks

Mohun Bagan’s illustrious history and association with a number of legendary footballers has seen a number of streets and landmarks related to the club.

Street names - Umapati Kumar Sarani (formerly known as Fern Road in Southern Kolkata), Mohun Bagan Lane, Sibdas Bhaduri Lane (both located in Shyambazar area of North Kolkata), Gostha Pal Sarani (near Eden Gardens Stadium).

A life sized statue of Gostha Pal is located in Maidan area of Kolkata while a statue of Sailen Manna was erected in Central Park, Salt Lake, Kolkata in 2013.[34]

Howrah Municipal Corporation Stadium was renamed as Sailen Manna Stadium in 2013.[35] The Corporation Stadium in Thrissur, Kerala was known as "Chuni Goswami Plaza" during 35th National Games in 2015.[36] Baichung Bhutia has a stadium named after him in Namchi, Sikkim.
