List of bus routes in Melbourne

This is a list of bus routes that are part of the bus network, in Melbourne, Australia. They are organized by route number and by bus company.

Metropolitan bus contracts were recently renewed on 1 July 2008, with all Melbourne bus operators signing the new contracts, to run bus services until 2018.

PTV (Public Transport Victoria) aquired the contract to manage and contact transport operators to provide train, tram and in this example here; bus services throughout Victoria. Accordingly, the agency procures these services through operators (eg. Transdev, Ventura) entering into and managing franchise contracts (eg. Bus routes). Identifying the PTV logo can be seen on almost every bus in Victoria through it's distinct 'PT' and 'V' on an angle or stylised as PT^> in black and red.

Route numbering scheme

The route number of buses in Melbourne can tell a little about the route's operator, area served and even its history.

Route numbering was a reflection of the designated zonal area used during the 1980s. Areas were referred to as "Neighborhood Zones". However, as part of the "Grow or Go" policies, route numbers across the bus network were affected. There are no two-digit route numbers – these are used exclusively by trams.

• 150–199, 400–899: These routes are run by private companies. Most are found in the middle and outer suburbs, where they provide feeders to railway stations and provide local travel.

• 200–399: These routes were former government-run routes (Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board and then MetBus). They are found mostly in inner suburbs such as Footscray/Sunshine, Elsternwick-Brighton, Clifton Hill and Port Melbourne. Routes in the Doncaster/Templestowe area also have these numbers due to a Tramways board takeover after the area's private operator collapsed. In the 1990s all MetBus routes were put out to private franchise. Until August 2013, these services were operated by Melbourne Bus Link and National Bus Company. All of these services have now been acquired by Transdev Melbourne.

• 900 series: Historically these route numbers were used by Victorian Railways, who ran buses co-ordinated with trains on some routes. Routes with these numbers have either been abolished or incorporated into other routes. The 900 series is now used for the high frequency SmartBus services, which are mostly cross-town and orbital routes.

NightBus

The Nightrider Bus Service runs after midnight until 4.30 am Fridays, 5:30 am Saturdays from central Melbourne to the outer suburbs. This service operates on weekends only.

Return services also operate to the city. After a Nightrider service revision in late 2008, doubled services are now taking place (instead of 1 hr frequencies, it is now 30 mins per bus), bus route operators have been reallocated and more minor improvements have affected the system.

On 31st of December 2015 the new Night Service trial scheme to last until the end of 2016 launched, where services in train, tram and bus services ran all through the night. Providing Victoria with a 24 hour public transport network.

This new scheme for buses called 'NightBus' replaced NightRider.

Ventura bought out many smaller bus companies including Ivanhoe Bus Company, US Bus Lines, Cardinia Transit, Grenda's, Invicta Bus Services, Moorabbin Transit, Moorabbin Transit, Peninsula Bus Lines, Portsea Passenger Service to stay alive and operating. All the bus companies bought out by Ventura still operate with a majority of there own buses, although Ventura has labled there own stickers. Signs and indicators to drivers on the roads still contain the original (eg. 'Grenda's) signage. Ventura is the largest bus company company with 127 services.
