The Toyota Avanza is a mini MPV designed and produced by Daihatsu and marketed by Toyota.[2] It is produced in Indonesia[3] and also contract assembled in Malaysia (under Perodua) for the first generation model. Daihatsu designed and manufactures the vehicle, which is then sold by both Daihatsu and Toyota under Daihatsu Xenia and Avanza nameplate respectively. Daihatsu supplies the vehicle to Toyota under a consigned production and OEM manufacturing agreement.[4] The "Avanza" name is taken from the Spanish word "avanza", which means "get moving" and Italian word "avanzato", which means "advance", while "Xenia" is taken from the Greek word "Xenia" (a Greek concept of hospitality), which means "guest-friendship".[5]

The Avanza is mainly developed as an entry-level MPV. Its spiritual predecessor was the Kijang, whose model program has since been split to two different models (the other being the larger, more expensive Kijang Innova) to expand Toyota's reach in the MPV sector. Unlike the Kijang and the succeeding Kijang Innova, the Avanza uses a unibody chassis construction instead of ladder frame type.[6]

In addition to Indonesia and Malaysia, the Avanza is sold in the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Middle East, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia, Caribbean, Egypt, South Africa and various other African countries. A rebadged version of the car was sold in China under the FAW badge until 2010.

As of October 2011, there have been 1 million Avanza/Xenia units sold, including 113,000 exported units.[7][8] As of December 2018, the Avanza has been sold 1.7 million units,[9] and combined sales with Xenia up to 2.75 million units.[10] As of December 2019, the Avanza has been sold 1.8 million units.[11] The Avanza has been the best-selling car in Indonesia for 15 consecutive years, between 2004 and 2019 respectively.[12][13]

History

The Avanza and Xenia were both conceived by the Indonesian subsidiary of Toyota and Daihatsu in the wake of the 1997 Asian financial crisis. At the time, the price of the larger Kijang already exceeded Rp 180,000,000, which was considered too expensive. Both companies were eventually collaborated to create a car that would be more affordable than the Kijang. After some market researches, design processes and production arrangements, the Avanza and Xenia were launched in December 2003 for the Indonesian market. The price was set at Rp 70,000,000 for the basic variant.

Initial sales target was 2,500–5,000 units per month, but the actual sales achievement exceeded 15,000 units. The first generation Avanza/Xenia was assembled at the first Indonesian Daihatsu plant in Sunter, Jakarta, while the second generation model is currently assembled at the same plant as the first generation model, and also at the second plant in Karawang, West Java, from April 2013 onwards.[14][15]

Markets

Indonesia

The Avanza was unveiled at the Gaikindo Auto Expo in July 2003 with development led by Toyota chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa. It was launched in December 2003 and sold over 100,000 units that year. When the Avanza was launched in Indonesia, it was available in two trim levels: the 1.3 E and 1.3 G, both with manual transmission. The Avanza later became one of the best selling cars in Indonesia.

In July 2004, the Avanza 1.3 S with automatic transmission launched to the market. The 1.3-litre engine was upgraded to use VVT-i (K3-VE) technology and individual direct ignition coils. Major changes in this version of Avanza occurred in the interior to change the odometer and digital tripmeter located beside the speedometer and tachometer. The braking system was upgraded to include anti-lock. The launch of this version is also designated as "test market" for the development plan of the all Avanza-Xenia VVT-i and Automatic Edition. This special edition comes with automatic transmission only. The black exterior colour was added at the same time.

The Avanza received its facelift in July 2006 with new grille, new bumpers, new interior, and new headlamps and tail lamps.[30] The 1.3 E and 1.3 G trims were upgraded to use the 1.3-litre, 16-valve DOHC VVT-i petrol engine from the outgoing 1.3 S trim. In October 2006, the 1.3 S trim was replaced by the 1.5 S trim, using a new 1.5-litre, 16-valve DOHC VVT-i petrol engine along with the new anti-lock braking system.

The Avanza received an update on 14 October 2008 with the revamped interior and steering wheel with four spokes (similar to the fifth generation HiAce, but without SRS airbag). The 1.3 G and 1.5 S trims received a front bumper mesh grille, added fog lamp garnish and a chrome accent in the rear window.[31][32] On 17 November 2009, the 1.3 E and 1.3 G trims received automatic transmission option.

Malaysia

In Malaysia, the Avanza was unveiled on 7 October 2004 and launched on 29 October 2004. It was available in one trim level only: 1.3 (manual and automatic).[33]

In October 2006, the Avanza received its facelift in Malaysia. It was available in two trim levels: 1.3E (manual and automatic) and 1.5G (automatic only).[19][34]

In October 2008, the Avanza was updated in Malaysia. It was available in four trim levels: 1.3E (manual and automatic), 1.5E (automatic only), 1.5G (automatic only) and 1.5S (automatic only).[35]

In December 2010, the Avanza was updated in Malaysia. The main change was the colour of the interior to a dark colour scheme. It was available in four trim levels: 1.3E (manual only), 1.5E (automatic only), 1.5G (automatic only) and 1.5S (automatic only).[36][37]

Philippines

In the Philippines, the Avanza has been offered since 2006 in two trim levels: the J trim with a 1.3-litre engine, having no power windows and locks, and only available with a manual transmission, while the G trim has a 1.5-litre engine, and available with a five-speed manual transmission and a four-speed automatic transmission respectively. In 2008, the J trim was made available without the third row seat. This particular line is popularly used as metered taxicabs in the Philippines; although it is sometimes mistaken for a UV vehicle with a dedicated route, like how its ancestors (Tamaraw FX and Revo) were utilized.

The Avanza was updated in 2008 with a new ceiling with grooves to improve airflow to the rear and a new interior colour scheme.

The Avanza has folding seats in the back, forming a third row of seats.

Daihatsu Xenia

The Avanza's twin model is called Daihatsu Xenia that is powered by a 1.3-litre engine similar to the Avanza's, and a three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine with power and torque rating at 63 PS (46 kW; 62 hp) at 5,600 rpm and 92 N⋅m (68 lb⋅ft) at 3,600 rpm.[28]

The Xenia was sold in Indonesia and China only. In Indonesia, the Xenia was available in three trim levels: 1.0 Mi, 1.0 Li and 1.3 Xi.

FAW Senya M80/S80

In China, Daihatsu together with First Automobile Works (FAW) launched the first generation Xenia as the FAW Senya M80 on 21 June 2007. The Senya M80 was originally simply called the FAW Senya,[38] but later developed a whole range of products based on the Senya platform and was soon renamed to Senya M80. The SUV version called the Senya S80 was introduced later.[39] Production in China was carried out at FAW Jilin Auto until 2010.[40]

The Senya S80 was revealed during the 2010 Beijing Auto Show.[41] Starting from the M80 and S80 of the Senya series, FAW Jilin started the Chinese brand Senia (森雅), which later became a brand focusing on crossovers.[42] A later facelift changed the front and rear ends of the Senya S80 which departs it from the Daihatsu-derived designs.

Daihatsu and FAW Jilin had a joint venture for selling Daihatsu vehicles branded under the FAW-brand from July 2009 until January 2010 when Daihatsu suddenly pulled out from Chinese market, and the joint venture for auto parts also dissolved in 2010. However, the productions based on the Daihatsu-sourced platforms continued.[43]

Indonesia

The second generation Avanza was launched on 9 November 2011 with development led by Toyota chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa.[53][54][55] The second generation Avanza is available in three trim levels: E, G and Veloz (taken from English word "velocity" and Spanish for "fast") (replacing the S trim).

On 15 May 2013, the Avanza was updated to include improved safety and comfort features, such as dual SRS airbags are now standard in every models.

On 2 June 2014, the G and Veloz trims received a Luxury variant. The Luxury variant was introduced to compete with its similarly badged competitors, such as Suzuki Ertiga Elegant/Sporty and Honda Mobilio Prestige/RS.

The Avanza received its first facelift on 12 August 2015 with development led by chief engineer Kazuhiko Yamashita.[56] The changes consist of a new engine, where the 1.3 models is now powered by a 1.3-litre 1NR-VE Dual VVT-i engine, while the 1.5 models is now powered by a 1.5-litre 2NR-VE Dual VVT-i engine. Other changes includes a new front and rear design, interior colour, head unit and safety features. The Veloz trim also received a 1.3 variant. The 1.3 Veloz can be equipped with either manual or automatic transmission.[57][58][59]

The Avanza received its second facelift on 15 January 2019 with development led by chief engineer Kazutoshi Sakamoto.[60] The front fascia is made similar to the third generation Voxy and the facelifted second generation Vellfire, while the side mirrors are shared with the second generation Rush. The rear fascia also received a slight update. All variants now uses LED headlamps, shark fin antenna, updated alloy wheel design and interior colour, digital air conditioner, auto retractable outer mirror (for G and Veloz trims), keyless entry system with push start engine button (for Veloz trim), revised suspension and improved interior quality.[61][62][63]

Exterior
The 1.3 E does not have fog lamps, in contrast with its 1.3 G, 1.5 G and Veloz trims. The 1.5-litre version of the Avanza in Indonesia (1.5 G and Veloz) shared same wheel design and both of them has an outer mirror with turning signal lamp. Veloz has a different body kit and spoiler as a standard. Body kit enhancements on the exterior available on Luxury models. Facelift models features larger grille, rear reflector garnish and updated wheel design (1.5 Veloz has polished two-tone alloy wheels).
Interior
The 1.3 E does not have any audio unit, the 1.3 G has a 1 DIN audio system with radio, CD and MP3 player. The 1.5 G has a double DIN audio system with radio, CD and MP3 player. The Veloz and Luxury have the same audio unit with 1.5 G, but with additional steering switches, USB and AUX input. All models have multi information display and tilt steering as standard. All models except Veloz have beige interior colour as standard. Whereas Veloz has dark gray interior colour. In addition, from 15 May 2013, all models have dual SRS airbags as standard. Luxury models have additional luxuries, such as faux wood panel and overhead monitor as standard. The audio system was also refined with DVD player. In the facelifted version, all models have 2 DIN audio system with CD, MP3, USB, AUX and Bluetooth connection with telephone connectivity as standard (1.5 models were enhanced with touchscreen monitor, DVD player and sat-nav). For E and G trims, interior colour has changed to brown and Veloz changed into full black. In the second facelift version, all models have a digital air conditioning system. G and Veloz trims received a touchscreen entertainment system with DVD player.
Safety features

As of 2015, dual SRS airbags, three-point seatbelts, ABS, Isofix and side impact beams are standard on all models. Stability control is available on some markets. An immobilizer is only offered in G and Veloz trims.

Transmover

In November 2016, Toyota Astra Motor introduced the Transmover (downgraded Avanza below the E trim) for fleet usage in the market. It also replaces the Vios-based Limo for taxicab usage.[64][65][66]

Malaysia

The second generation Avanza was launched in Malaysia on 11 January 2012 available in four trim levels: 1.3E, 1.5E, 1.5G and 1.5S (known in Indonesia as the Veloz). The 1.3 variant was powered by the K3-VE VVT-i engine with a 5-speed manual gearbox. while the 1.5 variants was powered by the 3SZ-VE VVT-i engine with a 4-speed automatic gearbox.[67] The facelift version was launched in January 2016. The facelifted 1.3 variant was powered by the 1NR-VE Dual VVT-i engine with a 5-speed manual gearbox and the facelifted 1.5 variants was powered by the 2NR-VE Dual VVT-i engine with a 4-speed automatic gearbox.[68] In February 2018, a 1.5X trim was added to the range and positioned above the 1.5S. It featured several aesthetic add-ons to give the exterior a more rugged appearance.[69] The second facelift Avanza was launched in Malaysia on 17 May 2019. Three trim levels is offered: 1.5E, 1.5S and 1.5S+. First for an Avanza, blind spot monitor and rear-cross traffic alert safety features was offered with the 1.5S+ trim.[70]

Philippines

The second generation Avanza was launched in the Philippines on 13 January 2012.[71] The second generation was available in three trim levels: The base which is the 1.3 J (with 5-speed manual only) no rear wiper, no fog lamps, black coloured side mirrors and full wheel disc cap. Unlike the first generation, the second generation now has the 1.3 E trim (with either 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic) though it has rear wiper and coloured key side mirrors it has no front fog lamps and it has a different style of alloy wheels and the top-of-the-line 1.5 G it has front fog lamps, rear spoiler, TVSS and different style alloy wheels.

The first facelift was launched in September 2015 and the second facelift in May 2019 respectively. The 2015 facelift consisted of three trim levels: 1.3 J (manual only), 1.3 E (manual or automatic), 1.5 G (manual or automatic). In October 2017, a fourth trim level was added to the line up: 1.5 Veloz (automatic only).[72][73][74] In the 2019 facelift, the G and Veloz trim received a 6.8-inch infotainment screen. The van version of the Avanza is also offered which is set below the base variant that has only two seats, without radio, no speaker (with radio and 2 speakers, optional) and has steel wheels. The second and third row seats are removed to make room for the cargo area. It is only offered in white colour and powered with 1.3-litre engine (with 5-speed manual only).[1]

Singapore

The second generation Avanza is available in Singapore since November 2013. Only the 1.5 G trim is available with a four-speed automatic transmission. The Avanza received a facelift along with the other markets in 2016.[citation needed]

Daihatsu Xenia

Alongside the Avanza, Daihatsu also launched the second generation Xenia on 9 November 2011 for sale in Indonesia only, along with more affordable pricing. The design of the Xenia remains the same as the Avanza.

The Xenia is initially available in four different trim levels: D, M, X and R. The D, M and X came with the five-speed manual gearbox, while the R can have either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. Like the previous generation, the Xenia features sub-classes that is exclusive to each trim levels, differs by the exterior options (such as body kit, parking camera, etc.) and sound-system (such as additional double-din DVD player with LCD screen and satellite navigation). For D and X, can have the Plus, while the M and R can have either Deluxe, Family or Sporty sub-classes. Exclusive to the R is the Attivo, the R Attivo can be differed by the rugged body kit and the roof rails, making it look similar to a crossover SUV.

The Xenia D and M features a 1.0-litre EJ-VE three-cylinder DOHC engine, producing 63 PS (46 kW; 62 bhp) and 9.2 kg⋅m (90 N⋅m) of torque, while the Xenia X and R features a 1.3-litre K3-VE four-cylinder DOHC engine, producing 92 PS (68 kW; 91 bhp) and 11.9 kg⋅m (117 N⋅m) of torque. Both engines are equipped with Toyota's standard electronic fuel injection with VVT-i.

On 15 May 2013, the Xenia was updated along with the Avanza to include improved safety and comfort features, dual SRS airbags are now standard in every trim levels, while other new additions includes seat belt warning indicator, silver accents on the dashboard and door trims, new seat design, and an updated steering wheel taken from the Daihatsu Ayla.

On 12 August 2015, the Xenia received its first facelift. The changes are the same as the Avanza, featuring a larger grille, a rear reflector garnish, a two-tone brown interior colour and a new head unit. However, the steering wheel design has been reverted to the original design from the pre-2013 Xenias, instead of the ones found on the Ayla. For safety features, all Xenias are now feature drive-by-wire, dual airbags, safety belt with pretension and force limiter, power window jam protection, side impact beam, parking brake and door ajar warning as standard. The R trim features an immobilizer and an eco indicator, while the X trim receives a four-speed automatic transmission option. The X and R received a new engine, both are now powered by a 1.3-litre 1NR-VE Dual VVT-i engine, producing 96.5 PS (71.0 kW) and 12.3 kg⋅m (121 N⋅m) of torque. The engines for the D and M remains unchanged, both are still maintaining the 1.0-litre EJ-VE VVT-i. The sub-classes are also updated as well, the M and X can only have the Deluxe, while the R can only have the Sporty. The Plus, Family and Attivo sub-classes were discontinued for the facelifted model. The R Sporty features a sportier body-kit, 14-inch two-tone alloy wheels, one-piece chrome radiator grille, chrome door handles and window list, LED daytime running lamps and an exclusive "Sporty" body graphic stickers.

In August 2016, the Xenia 1.0 models (D and M) were discontinued in favor of the smaller Daihatsu Sigra.[17]

On 10 November 2017, Daihatsu added a new variant to the Xenia lineup, the R Custom, based on the R trim, the R Custom adds crossover-like proportions on its exterior, such as body-kit and side over-fenders, other differences on this trim includes an inner honeycomb grille, 15-inch two-tone alloy wheels (similar to the Avanza Veloz), a bigger touchscreen head unit and black accents on the dashboard and door trim. The R Custom also features an exclusive "Custom" body graphic stickers that is located above the side skirt on both sides of the vehicle.[75]

On 15 January 2019, the Xenia received its second facelift. Like the Avanza, it features an updated front fascia with LED projector headlamps similar to the Toyota Voxy and Toyota Vellfire, side mirrors from the F800 Terios, and a slightly updated rear fascia. Other changes includes a shark fin antenna, updated alloy wheel design and interior colour, digital air conditioner, auto retractable mirrors, revised suspension, improved interior quality and updated sub-classes, now the Deluxe is the only sub-class available, while the Sporty and Custom are now discontinued. Unlike the Avanza, keyless entry system with push start/stop engine button is not available on the Xenia and alloy wheels are now standard on every trim levels, even on the base X. For the first time ever, the Xenia received a 1.5-litre 2NR-VE Dual VVT-i engine option, exclusive to the R Deluxe variant.[76]
