Cartoon Network is a Philippine cable and satellite television channel created by Turner Broadcasting, a unit of Time Warner, which primarily shows animated programming. The Philippine version is a branch of Cartoon Network Asia, and broadcasts exclusively in the Philippines.

History

Pre-launch

Ted Turner, an American mogul and entrepreneur, bought the pre-May 1986 films of MGM, also including pre-August 1948 WB cartoons and films, and the library of the MGM Cartoon Studios (since 1937 and shut down in 1957). While he managed to broadcast on TBS, WTBS17 and TNT some film library. He bought Hanna-Barbera since 1991 due to Great American Broadcasting's debt. He launched Cartoon Network in America in October 1, 1992, also the release of Tom and Jerry: The Movie. Later, he launched international versions of CN since 1993 and started on 1994, CN Philippines was born along CN SEAsia. On 1996, Time Warner merged withTurner, due to the library of WB was there, Turner stayed as a board of directors until 2006 or 2007.

1990s

Cartoon Network Philippines was formerly part of Cartoon Network Asia. It started broadcasting on September 1, 1995 as the dual-channel TNT & Cartoon Network, operating from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with Turner Classic Movies, formerly TNT, taking the remainder of the daily schedule.[1] It originally aired only Hanna-Barbera cartoons such as The Yogi Bear Show, Top Cat, and The Flintstones. Cartoon Network is the first cartoon cable channel in the Philippines, and while Disney Channel launched on 1996, and Nick on 1998. In 1996, the channel started to air MGM cartoons, such as Tom and Jerry, Droopy, and Spike and Tyke. Following Time Warner's purchase of Turner later that year, the channel added Warner Bros. shows, such as Looney Tunes and related cartoons, to its programming in 1997. In 1998, Cartoon Network started to air its first original shows: Space Ghost Coast to Coast and The Moxy Show. The latter was soon cancelled, however.

On August 22, 1999, Cartoon Network Asia began adopting Cartoon Network USA's "Powerhouse" theme. That year, the network introduced Dexter's Laboratory, Cow & Chicken, I Am Weasel, Ed, Edd n' Eddy, and Johnny Bravo. New shows first aired the next year included The Powerpuff Girls, Mike, Lu & Og, and Courage the Cowardly Dog.

2000s

In 2001, Cartoon Network continued to air new original programs, such as Sheep in the Big City, Time Squad, and Samurai Jack. The network dubbed these original programs "Cartoon Cartoons" and aired them in a programming block Friday nights. The same year, Cartoon Network created other programming blocks, including Toonami, Acme Hour, Prime Time, Boomerang, and Cartoon Network After Dark. In 2002, the network expanded Cartoon Cartoons with new shows such as Grim & Evil, Robot Jones, and Codename: Kids Next Door. Justice League and ¡Mucha Lucha! also debuted in 2002. Shows added to the line-up in 2003 include post-1948 Warner Bros. cartoons and X-Men: Evolution. In 2004, Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends was the only program to debut on the network. In 2005, the Boomerang programming block was made into its own channel.

On October 1, 2005, the network bumpers were replaced with 3-D animations of the fictional "CN City," home to all the Cartoon Network characters. The network logo was also replaced. In 2006, several new Cartoon Network originals premiered, including Robotboy, The Life and Times of Juniper Lee, Camp Lazlo, Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi, My Gym Partner's a Monkey, and Squirrel Boy. The Cartoon Cartoons moniker previously used for Cartoon Network originals was discontinued that year.

On August 31, 2008, the network changed the format of its bumpers and commercials, mirroring similar changes by Cartoon Network Southeast Asia. During this time, older programs such as Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Camp Lazlo began to air less frequently, in favor of new shows such as Ben 10 and The Secret Saturdays.

2010s

On October 1, 2011, Cartoon Network introduced new branding and a logo. Designed by Brand New School, it makes heavy use of a black and white checkerboard motif. The slogan "It's a Fun Thing!" was also introduced. Many older advertisements and bumpers from the previous branding were retained, albeit with the addition of the new logo.

In December 2012, Cartoon Network started aired past shows, such as Ben 10 and Camp Lazlo, in HDTV 1080i format instead of SDTV 480i format. Starting January 8, 2013 from 12:00 AM until 6:00 AM (PHT) each morning, Cartoon Network airs all shows and commercials in HDTV 1080i format. The slogan "It's A Fun Thing!" was abolished and replaced by "Are You CN What Where Sayin'" in November 2014.

Programming

Almost all of Cartoon Network's programs are from Warner Bros., MGM, or Hanna-Barbera. Here is a list of shows currently showing on Cartoon Network (Philippines):

Blocks

  • Laughternoons - Replaced from Funday Monday, due to low viewers from schooldays starts. Laughternoons starts at 4:00pm and ends at 7:00pm. Some programs came from originals and acquired shows.
  • CN Popcorn - Formerly CN Theatre during rebranding era. This is a movie block. The movies came from WB, Columbia, Paramount and Universal. The block starts at 8am. Dissimilar to Disney Channel's own movie block which starts at 9am.

Cartoon Network originals

Cartoon Network Philippines began to air original programming since 1997 until their 1998 cancellation. These resumed in 1999 and continue till the present. Meanwhile, as of 2014, new original programming will be added like Clarence and others.

Cartoon Network acquired shows

Cartoon Network Philippines is where acquired shows from Warner Bros. Animation, Xilam, Saban Brands are broadcast. Oggy and the Cockroaches is the most popular acquired show which started airing since 2011, but the third season aired since Fall 2013 due to Disney Channel Asia's overbroadcasting acquired shows, but on the rival channel the show was aired from 2010 until 2013. The first 3 seasons of this show stopped airing on this channel and moved to Nickelodeon in January 2015. Tom and Jerry and Shaun the Sheep stopped airing on Cartoon Network and moved to Boomerang after Boomerang's relaunch in 2015.

Classic programming

Cartoon Network broadcasts classic programming like Hanna-Barbera, Marvel (until 2009), Ruby-Spears and other classic studios. Tom and Jerry remained on the channel, but they air only for commercials before the show starts until 2015, which Tom and Jerry cartoons air on Boomerang. Hanna-Barbera cartoons are back since 2010 but stopped airing on 2012. Looney Tunes cartoons stopped airing until 2015, when they started airing on Boomerang.

Adult Swim programming

Cartoon Network broadcasts Adult Swim programming without sign-off scenes. The block was started since 2000 or 2001 until 2008, due to adult audience extension.

TV5 Kids presents Cartoon Network

On October 18, 2010, TV5 launched TV5 Kids presents Cartoon Network, a cartoon block which airs selected Cartoon Network programs dubbed in Filipino. Currently, TV5 airs Ben 10, Ben 10: Alien Force, Ben 10 Omniverse Codename: Kids Next Door, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ed, Edd, & Eddy, Powerpuff Girls Z, The Secret Saturdays, and Teen Titans. On 2013, TV5 aired more Cartoon Network shows to their block like Regular Show, The Amazing World of Gumball and Adventure Time. On 2015, TV5 Kids presents Cartoon Network block has been axed, but giving the way for returning of TV5 AniMEGA.

Cartoon Network Video

In late 2007, Cartoon Network launched Cartoon Network Video, a video on demand service designed for Philippine broadband viewers with Flash Video. It did not allow full screen viewing until a site redesign in late 2008.

Cartoon Network HD

Cartoon Network HD is a high definition simulcast of Cartoon Network Asia available only on SkyCable HD (Channel 178), and Cignal HD (Channel 106).
