Note from Jimbo

[edit]

I wonder if you might consider...

I wonder if you might consider simply removing your political/religious/etc. userboxes and asking others to do the same. This seems to me to be the best way to quickly and easily end the userbox wars.

Userboxes of a political or, more broadly, polemical, nature are bad for the project. They are attractive to the wrong kinds of people, and they give visitors the wrong idea of what it means to be a Wikipedian.

I think rather than us having to go through a mass deletion (which is what is likely to happen if the userbox fad doesn't go away), it will be better to simply change the culture, one person at a time. Will you help me?--Jimbo Wales 10:53, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

What I'm doing about it

[edit]

I've decided to take this seriously. I'll go down the list of all users I've ever been in contact with and check to see if they're using political or religious userboxes. If they are, and I think I have a reasonable chance of making a good faith approach with positive results, I'll do so.

This list is compiled from my old watchlist, to which all my edits were added for a one year period. I popped all the usernames into a file and did a related changes list from it, and went down the list checking the associated userpages.

Thus if a user is on this list, it doesn't say anything about whether I like them or dislike them as people, or endorse their behavior. It's just a sample of people I've been in contact with through their user or talk pages.

Obviously it doesn't show whether the user does or doesn't agree with Jimbo on this issue. If a user is listed as having no political or religious userboxes on his page, it only means that I couldn't find any on his page when I visited. He could have been about to add a dozen of the things in the next edit, for all I know, or he could not happen to like userboxes but still not agree with Jimbo that political and religious ones are bad for the project.

  • I struck out the ones I've removed, and you left out carnivore, which was paired with "meat is murder," and "Discordian," which is paired with "Roman Catholic" — and I still trust Jimbo even if I don't advertise it ➥the Epopt 17:30, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
