Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Websites articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. Facebook statistics

Can someone update the article, following the recent IPO of Facebook, which has increased the traffic. Some suggestions I would point:

i) Add a secondary source, rather than Socialbakers.com
ii) Increase the list to 100/150/200 countries
iii) Add three more columns, namely Sl no, penetration, change%
iv) Convert the external links in the stats into ref with cite templates
v) Expand the text
vi) Add more than one type of stats, if possible
vii) Represent some data in form of graphs/charts or a better world map
viii) Add better links in external links section
ix) Have updates for all countries at one time, not like as it is
ix) Rename to Statistics of Facebook

Need help regarding two aspects of article above. I am related to the company, hence a potential conflict of interest.
A) Notability: The article contains two secondary sources. (I put few more in the talk page). Is it enough?
B) Edition: I wrote the article as a draft. As much as I tried to be neutral, there is still a conflict of interest. Can an editor have a peek at it? Comments are welcome and I expect changes.

It needs more reliable, English sources. Looking at the sources currently in use, it looks like only Le Devoir is the only reliable one, but it's not even in English. Computing importance no longer defaults to Websites importance

Articles tagged using {{WikiProject Websites}} will retain their Websites importance, but will no longer get assigned a general computing importance unless one is provided explicitly using computing-importance=.

When assessing articles for the Websites project, please consider the computing importance and tag accordingly. For articles which also have a {{WikiProject Computing}} banner, its importance= must match the Websites computing-importance=.

This will help WP Computing in three ways:

1. Improve the accuracy of importance assessments for general computing
2. Avoid unexpected changes to the Computing importance that result from changing the Websites importance
3. Bring attention to the parameter for general computing importance, reducing the likelihood of articles accidently being listed in multiple Computing importance categories. (This causes false entries in the Computing reassessment log – see discussion at WP:COMP/A – and likely other problems as well.) --Pnm (talk) 04:06, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Request for an independent look at proposed article

I've researched and drafted a proposed article about the C-SPAN Video Library, a website containing more than two decades of archived public affairs programming by the U.S. television network C-SPAN. That article is presently in my user subspace, here. I hesitate to post it immediately because I work with C-SPAN's communications team, and am mindful that I have a WP:CONFLICT with C-SPAN as a general subject. I hasten to add that the article has been written to strictly follow Wikipedia policies and guidelines, WP:VERIFY, WP:RS and WP:NPOV among them. I don't believe there is anything remotely controversial about the proposed article and its suitability per WP:NOTE is more than adequately demonstrated, but to stay on the safe side, I figured this was an appropriate place to post a review request. If there are no objections after a day or so, I'll probably go ahead and post it up. But I'm open to any feedback you may have here or on my talk page. Looks like a good article. I don't see any serious problems. Some minor observations:

1. Lead: The 160,000 statistic could be moved to Content. "The complete collection of" in the lead sounds promotional, and it isn't necessary – it would be implied. Is a "Golden Beacon" known outside the industry? If not it might not need to be in the lead.
2. History section contains a lot of detail. In particular background about the C-SPAN archives should be covered elsewhere and linked to.
3. Public response section contains weasel words. "Landmark educational tool" sounds unencyclopedic, and should probably be a direct quote.
4. Do the Multichannel News, Mediaite, and Gothamist citations meet WP:RS? (Those would be helpful wikilinks in the citations.)

I've incorporated most of your suggestions into the current draft of the article. As for the sources, Multichannel News is an industry publication that goes back to 1980, and should remain. Gothamist probably is not, and the same point was already made by the NYT, so I've removed it. The more interesting question is Mediaite: it's a professional site with an editorial structure and is known for providing commentary on the news media (hence its name) but it is also known more for opinion than reporting and so is probably right on the bubble. OK, sounds good. The opinion there was sourced to Mediaite, hence the quotation marks I had placed around "landmark". However, I did look up additional sources, and added an editorial from the New Hampshire Union Leader and Howard Kurtz, then of The Washington Post, making similar statements. I then rewrote the sentence, softening the language somewhat. With that done, I've gone ahead and moved it into the mainspace. After a recent request, I added WikiProject Websites to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. I came across the article Silk Road (marketplace) recently, and found a lot of links to sites in the domain .onion that require Tor (network) to access. Articles on websites

Hello, folks! Articles on news / entertainment media typically describe in detail the "original media" (television channel, radio station, newspaper, magazine), but usually include very little about their websites. In the case of United States media, there are individual articles like nbcnews.com, espn.com and foxsports.com, articles like Forbes, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times include decent sections, but there is little or nothing about the websites of ABC News, CBS News, Fox News, Bloomberg, USA Today and The Washington Post. New article to propose: Rally.org

Hi, on behalf of the fundraising platform Rally.org, I've written a draft for a new Wikipedia article about the online platform and its predecessor, Piryx. I would like to have other editors review the draft and move it into live article space if it is ready, and provide feedback if edits are needed.

The platform easily meets notability, having received coverage in the press under its previous name, Piryx (which Rally.org still continues to operate) and as Rally.org, since its rebranding in 2011. In particular, Rally.org received a fair amount of coverage for having closed the highest ever Series A round of venture capital raised online, including articles in The Wall Street Journal and TechCrunch. Other reliable sources that I have used to write the draft include VentureBeat, Forbes and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Based on these sources, I've aimed to write the draft neutrally and include notable information about the platform, but I'd like to have other editors review it to make sure it meets Wikipedia's guidelines. Also, because I follow the "bright line" and don't make any edits to live articles, including moving drafts of new articles into live space, if the article looks ok, I hope that another editor will take it live.

What to display in the web address field when we don't give a link

There is consensus that for at least some onion sites that we should not give a link to the site from the article. At Talk:The Hidden Wiki#Web address field in the infobox I have raised a question about what we should show in the infobox in place of a link in those cases, your views would be welcome there. Does anyone know why WikiProject Websites is "supported by" WikiProject Computing? Websites don't seem to be a particularly technical topic. It seems like if WikiProject Websites is to be a sub-project of someone, WikiProject Internet would be a better candidate. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

Use of Infoboxes for web applications

I'd like to bring up the discussion of the use of infoboxes. Modern web applications resemble traditional software that happens to run in a web browser far more than they do websites that provide content. Some examples include Dropbox (service), SlideRocket, Feedly, Google Docs, and Outlook Web App. Further, many of these web apps also include client applications for Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, etc. However, there is inconsistent use of the infoboxes. Though all of the ones I mentioned use Template: Infobox software, many others use Template: Infobox website. Some examples of those include Sway, Google Drive, Office Online, OneDrive, and Zoho Office Suite. Webmail services like Gmail, Outlook.com, and Yahoo Mail seem to fit somewhere in between.

Merge request

I would propose a rapid merger of Unique visitor and Unique user, both in this Wikiproject's purview. The larger, more detailed of the two (Uu) states repeatedly that the two are synonymous, and the smaller of the two articles (Uv) is very short and based on a single source. Transfer of the content should be fast and simple, with addition of a sentence that Uu is (it appears) more often used my the coding communities, and Uv by business/marketing individuals. Cheers. Revival of the Webcomics Task Force

The past few months, I've been putting effort into reviving the Webcomic Task Force, with little results. I contacted WikiProject Comics about it, but for some reason, it didn't even cross my mind to contact this WikiProject. It seems indisputable to me that this topic in general would be of interest to WikiProject Websites. One of the articles I have basically created last month was Lists of webcomics, one which I rated of high importance to this project. The inactivity of the webcomics project has resulted in increasingly few webcomic articles have been made in recent years. I don't believe we have any articles whatsoever on webcomics started in 2014 or later. Meanwhile, stubs created ten years ago do not meet Wikipedia's guidelines anymore.

Quatloos.com

It's not an important article, and it looks fairly similar to a stub, but the Quatloos.com article now reflects the entirety of RS mentions for Quatloos!. It'll never be a GA, just because it's lacking some basics (even if I forced a Lead into the article, I'd need to replicate almost the entire body to satisfy the Lead length requirements). However, I'd suggest that it's now "well organized and essentially complete", so should be bumped up to an A grade.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

It bypasses publisher paywalls by using educational institution proxies with credentials to which the site is not entitled, after which it stores papers in its own cache to speed up future requests.

As "sci-hub.tw" is on the Wikipedia spam blacklist, I've removed the URL from the citation in Option 1. You can see the original citation in revision 864273518.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. Please make full use of Template:Decrease for websites' Alexa rank

Greetings!

Alas I don't have time to personally join your worthy project, but I still wanted to give you a small heads-up since it seems within the scope of your project:

Template:Decrease, which produces these nice red & green arrow-thingys indicating a rank change ( & ), actually also has options for negative increase {{IncreaseNegative}} and positive decrease {{DecreasePositive}}.

These should be used whenever there is a ranking in which - like e.g. in sports - 1st place is best, and higher numbers worse.

This is used as intended in a number of Wikipedia articles, but notably not in the vast majority of websites which have an Alexa rank. But Alexa ranks are like that - the lower, the better!

So to avoid confusion for the reader, I strongly suggest to henceforth use the proper pointing arrow on all Alexa rankings (and also on all other applicable rankings).

I tried to update a few articles to use this by hand, but I could not find a way to correct all instances automatically. If there is one, I'd love to know how to use it. --LordPeterII (talk) 18:35, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

How to declare a site dead

Eventful appears to be dead. Currently, the URL is a redirect to another site owned by Entercom, the parent company. I didn't find any general-purpose wiki-editor-howto pages that address how to handle the death of a (notable) webpage. Eventful seems to be in a middle zone of notability: notable enough to get some third-party coverage in the past, but not notable enough that people (especially reliable sources like the press) notice its demise immediately. Combine that with a corporate owner who I'm sure would like to downplay its failure. The only third party source I found is in a mailing list hosted on google groups (maybe accessible at https://groups.google.com/group/eventful-api-developers) -- recent mailing list poster David is an Eventful employee posting from an eventful.com email address. How is something like this to be handled? I have a reasonably long history of Wikipedia micro-edits (fix a link, remove small vandalisms, etc), but not much experience in significant content updates such as this.

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
