Card fan?
Me too! But what was up with Empire? It's the only one of his books I actually failed to make it through. Also, what are your thougts on this comic?? delldot on a public computer talk 23:22, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- I'll have to admit, I've not (yet) ventured outside the Enderverse. Funny comic. It's been so long, I can't remember which one is my favorite after the original. Probably Speaker. cheers =) xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 23:27, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- Go for The Worthing Saga on your next venture out of the Enderverse! It's my favorite :) Peace, delldot on a public computer talk 00:44, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
- As a fellow Card fan, I'm curious as to your thoughts about the potential for my username to be divisive, either in the context of it being a derivative of the word xenocide, or in the context of it being derived from a word coined by someone with such controversial personal views. By the way, I haven't picked up The Worthing Saga yet, but it's on my list. As to why Empire is so different than his other work - probably because it's based on a an upcoming video game, thus wasn't entirely his own creation. xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 03:44, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hm, it never would have occurred to me that your name was divisive. My instinct would be to totally not worry about it unless someone says something, and probably not even then :P I mean, it's great to not want to upset people, but at some point stuff is people's own problem, don't you think? Of course, this thinking is coming from a person whose userpage is a giant rainbow, so do with it what you want. :P You could always put a disclaimer on your user page or something if you're worried about it though. Anyway, yeah, I'm desperately hoping Empire was ghostwritten or something. Still, it wouldn't be enough of an excuse, because he still allowed his name to be put on it... :P delldot on a public computer talk 08:37, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

You have obviously discovered that I am young. I use my real name everywhere, but yes, i'll stop. StewieGriffin! • Talk 14:50, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

This is my radio show, however, I am looking for 10 second sound files, commenting on Wikipedia. If you could get me one done in the next 10 mins (little time, i know!), I can have it in today's broadcast. StewieGriffin! • Talk 15:04, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

- Great show, might I suggest starting to report how many new articles since the last broadcast, rather than how many articles? (i.e. "Since last broadcast, over 7500 new articles have been added to Wikipedia's nearly 2.4 million articles.) xenocidic (talk) 16:06, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Userbox alignment
Copied from my talk page for reference: (Re: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Mets501&curid=3957872&diff=216504948&oldid=216283261) That one you were asking Mets about is taller than the rest, is this any better? You could consider tweaking the userbox heights directly, but this may affect other users. If you display userboxen in a vertical format, perhaps utilizing {{userboxtop}}/{{userboxbottom}}, then the height will not be an issue. xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 23:28, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, that's much better. Thanks!! I still have one alignment issue (a seemingly empty row for no apparent reason, right in the middle of my Politics/Hobbies section); would you mind taking a look at it (at your convenience, of course) to see what I need to do? I'm just now working out how to do this sort of thing and it's all a learning experience. I'd really, really appreciate the help. -- edi (talk) 23:39, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not seeing any empty rows there in either Firefox or IE. Yes the met-the-moonwalker is on it's own row, bu that's about it. What browser are you using? xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 23:44, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
- I'm in IE6, but I've been thinking about it and I think it may actually be another vertical alignment thing. {{User:Bluedenim/Centrism}} was displaying much like the West Virginia one that you fixed with "valign". I fixed the Centrism one myself the same way, and that's when the dead space showed up immediately below it, and I also notice now that there's a little extra space below the WV one. So I'm guessing the valign has very likely created the other problem. The question is: Is it fixable? -- edi (talk) 23:56, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
- Any better now? I added valign to every row of that table. Unfortunately, it can't span across the entire table for some reason. The problem didn't manifest in IE7, so you might consider upgrading your browser, or switching to a much better one ;>. xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 23:59, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
- It's still the same, but it's cool, no big deal. I really appreciate the work you've put into it; I couldn't have asked for a nicer, more helpful response. I also appreciate the nudge toward Firefox. :) I agree, actually; I've just been too lazy to bother. Soon, maybe. In the meantime, thanks again for all your help. You rock. -- edi (talk) 00:13, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

← No problem =) I used to be a fairly staunch advocate of not using Firefox either, but once you get used to it, it's really hard to go back to IE. P.S. I think I found the problem, you had an extraneous row statement here. Better now? xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 00:16, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- Just so you know... I downloaded Firefox out of curiosity and you're right; it looks great there. No telling what the root of the problem is in IE, but I'm not going to worry about it. Thanks again. :) -- edi (talk) 01:02, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- The problem was an extra row..(see my comment above). I guess IE6 rendered this, while Firefox and IE7 ignored it. But you'll enjoy using Firefox all the same =) xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 01:12, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Hey, my name on XBL is chrislk05. I should have added you last night. Yea, you can copy my userpage design. I however did not design it, it was designed by User:Phaedriel. MZMcBride thread
When it was being discussed in the IRC chan, the question was asked if it was at ANI and the answer was not yet. No one brought the existing thread to my attention and I've not been on ANI in a few, so I was not aware of its existence (the current thread, that is). I attempted to archive the thread I started, as there was already the ongoing thread regarding the block, that Pilotguy failed to mention he'd posted to, but I ECed four times, so I just let it go. :p Lara❤Love 03:07, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Qui/Statustop template
Thanks for the heads-up re SoxBot. I have installed Qui however I keep getting a spurious error We encountered an unknown status. Please blank your Special:MyPage:/Status page. which pops up every time I go to a new page even though User:Nancy/Status is empty. Any ideas? nancy (talk) 14:22, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hrm, I'm not quite sure. That status page should hold your status, I updated it back to "Online"... Problems regarding Qui should be directed to TheDJ, as I'm not sure how it works. Just the template. If you hover over the small icon in the top right you will see the updating stuff. What browser are you using? I think you need to use one of the supported browsers, that could be the problem. xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 15:13, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
- Still same error - thanks so much for trying though. There is somethingproperly wrong as I donlt even get the icon. Infobox
do you know how to change the color of an infobox, or do you know someone who can? Mr. GreenHit Me UpUserboxes 15:29, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
- As far as I can see, there's no parameter to change the background colour. You could consider substing the infobox user into a subpage of your userpage and tweaking it directly (I showed you above how to change the background of a table, and the infobox uses tables), but I've also dropped a request for this paramater here. xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 15:33, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Heh
Lol at your summary: "While Naerii was initially unconvinced, they later deleted the entire oppose discussion and switched to support, citing a popular Eminem song in the edit summary as the justification for this change." - it makes me sound so crazy when written formally like that! I just realised that my concerns were kind of petty, and seeing as I supported Evula in her recent RFB even after seeing her mention somewhere that she hasn't written much in the articlespace I figured it would be hypocritical not to support you for admin. It's nice that you're taking opposes into account rather than taking a stance of "well I've passed now, I can forget all that crap", though. My exams are over soon (in 6 hours as a matter of fact :o) so if you need any help writing articles over the summer I'd be glad to assist (personally I'm going to be writing some boring history stuffs). Improving an article to GA or FA can be pretty daunting on your own, so I'd be happy to help out if you like :)
And the edit summary was just me pissing about I guess; I rarely if ever use edit summaries and when I do remember I can never think of anything to say, so sometimes I just quote whatever I happen to be listening to at the time (how embarassing to admit that I listen to Eminem :(). Congrats on passing your RfA. naerii - talk 04:15, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- Not embarrassing at all - Eminem rocks! or raps... or something... Sorry, I didn't meant to make you out to seem crazy, I wrote it that way for comedic effect. =) (I can change it if you want) I must admit I did have a chuckle when I read it. at first I was like... wtf? until I realized where it was from. Still, I was rather confused - thanks for clearing that up for me. and I might take you up on that offer, though, my area of expertise... well,... it's been getting some scorn from the GA/FA review projects recently. as for addressing the opposes, I feel that they are the most important part of the RFA, they really need to be taken into account and you need to look at how you can improve for the betterment of the encyclopedia as a whole. anyways, thanks again. xenocidic (talk) 04:22, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- Lmao it's fine, it cracked me up :P I've seen some grumbling about the video game wikiproject in FAC recently but I wouldn't take it to heart if I were you; most of the articles I write are about albums and that area is looked down on just as much as video games are and to be honest I give about this <-> much of a shit ;) So yeah just let me know if you want any assistance with anything (wikis are all about collaboration after all) - I'm not the world's best writer but I enjoy expanding articles (people will just have to deal with my amateur prose - you know it's really ironic since I got 94% in my English Literature A Level). naerii - talk 04:43, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
Re: Your RFA
Hey Xenocidic, I hope you weren't offended/put off by my switch (seemingly at the last minute) to a weak oppose. Nothing personal of course. I do think you're a strong contributor/editor, but after revisiting the discussion, the CSD tagging took me somewhat aback. I swayed back and forth about it for a while before changing my !vote. I think you'll make a good admin though, just as long as you don't bite the newbies by tagging an A7 as an attack page : ) Wisdom89 (T / C) 04:37, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- Offended - not at all - I've come to respect your contributions to the RFA process and I know you wouldn't have done that without deep deliberation. No hard feelings whatsoever. Truthfully, I didn't expect to be at RFA so soon, I really did want some coaching on the CSD stuff - but no matter. I'll have to learn on the job =) xenocidic (talk) 04:42, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Congratulations on getting the mop. Now it's time to see if what they say is true: "be careful what you wish for, for you will surely get it..." I was especially interested because your RfA was the first one for an editor that I actually knew before seeing the RfA. Wikipedia needs more like you - see you around! Re:
Yeah, well, there's only like one person on Wikipedia who I think possibly deserves to be an admin more than you and now you are one. Also, great idea with RfA analysis page. Maybe I'll get a chance sometime to stealcopy that idea sometime. As for your other idea, I dunno man. I still make mistakes with CSD tagging (though this one was a result of misunderstanding how Twinkle works) and that definitely would not help me very much, especially considering my lack of CSD participation was a major factor in the failure of my rfa. (that, along with my boneheaded answers to the questions....) Anyway, I think I should probably wait until late June at the absolute earliest before trying again. Either way, I don't really need the tools to do what I do (though me having them might make some of the guys at AIV happier.....) and if I do need an admin for something like a move-over-redirect, I know exactly who to ask ;) so it's no big deal if I don't have the tools. Not to say I wouldn't like to have them, I would, but I'm basically saying that I can still make good (even great....well... ;) ) contributions to Wikipedia without them. So yeah. Congrats on your Rfa (again). It's really cool you passed it. Anyway, talk to you later. Thingg⊕⊗ 17:01, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

- I'm glad for your success. And please don't take negative comments raised in the RfA discussion to heart. If you can recall the old Rick Nelson song "Garden Party," it had the lyric: "See, you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself." If you're satisfied with yourself, then ultimately that is all that matters. So...what's your first order of Admin business? Who's going to be the first person to get blocked by the Xenocidic mop of justice? :) Be well. Ecoleetage (talk) 13:07, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

- I'm not quite sure what you're trying to accomplish but if you want to add your own custom statuses you'll need two pages - one to hold the statuses and one to hold the switch. User:Wikieditor222/StatusTemplate now holds the template and User:Wikieditor222/Status now holds the switch. Your custom status "stupid" should work properly now - though I don't know why you'd want to say that! Let me know if you need further assistance. xenocidic (talk) 01:29, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Beyond Good and Evil edits
Hi!
I've recently (June 1st) made some contributions to the Beyond Good & Evil (video game) page which were subsequently rolled back by you. I'd like to understand what exactly caused the rollback. Your comment on the rollback indicates 'spam'; however, I'd like to contest that qualification of the edits I made. The exact edits I made were as follows:
1) corrected improper grammar in the Reception section 2) added a reference to the game scoring top placement in a "Top 25 Video Game Heroes of All Time" article. 3) updated the Series Development to correctly reflect the recent confirmation of Beyond Good and Evil 2 (the previous version of the text spoke about this as non-confimed event, with the actual confirmation being simply tacked on at the end, which created an inconsistency) 4) added a reference to a review of the game at GameLemon.com
Of these, edits 1 and 3 (at the very least) have absolutely nothing to do with spam. These edits did not include any links at all, and simply corrected grammar and corrected outdated information. I am at a loss to understand why these were not deemed an improvement to the article.
As for edits 2 and 4, I can conceivably understand the spam designation since these two edits did include outside links to GameLemon.com, a site where I serve as Editor-in-Chief. Even in these cases however, please note that I did not just blindly add links. I added a reference to a professionally written and presented review of the game, which should be perfectly acceptable for adding to the table of reviews already present (from IGN, GameSpy, and the like), unless there are some special qualifications of which review sources are eligible to be listed there that I am not aware of.
The other edit (#2 above) refers to an article where the main character of the game was listed in one of the top positions in a Top 25 Video Game Heroes of All Time editorial, which is certainly relevant to the 'Reception' discussion. It's instructive to point out that the said article was a Top article on Digg.com with over 1200 diggs and hundreds of user comments, as well as enjoying broad popularity on several other large news and gaming sites - so it can in no way be construed as irrelevant, niche, or 'spam'. Myself and the rest of the GameLemon editorial team fully stand behind the integrity of our content, and if you take some time to peruse the said article, I am sure you'll recognize its high level of quality and relevance to the discussion here. While it would be silly to deny that creating broader exposure for my site was one of my goals in making these particular edits, I am sure you'd agree that this alone is not a reason to disqualify this content as long as its actually valuable and relevant, which I strongly believe it is. I am fully aware that all external links on Wikipedia include the 'no-follow' attribute, so I am not doing this to try to boost Google PageRank or anything of the sort.
In light of the above, I'd appreciate if you'd take a few minutes to offer your thoughts on the matter. I recognize that I am new to Wikipedia, so I certainly contend that there may be aspects of the Wikipedia code of conduct that I have not yet grasped; if that is indeed so, I'd appreciate according clarfications on the subject.
thanks for your time,
Vaga koleso (talk) 05:53, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- In looking at the edits, there was indeed some edits of value, but the reversion was done while I was reverting all your edits to video game articles for the addition of the "Game Lemon" links. The practice of adding one's own site as a reference to video game articles is strongly discouraged, however if you wish to dispute this, feel free to raise the issue at the Video Games WikiProject. I will re-add the edits of merit, but consider the conflict of interests presented when adding your own work as a citation when editing Wikipedia and review our guidelines on reliable sources. xenocidic (talk) 11:17, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Ready for that block
Based on the 68.217.248.180's last edit summary, I think he's about ready for a long block. Also, he gave what looks to be a real phone number in an edit summary earlier, that'll probably have to be deleted. Gwynand | Talk•Contribs 15:51, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

(Re [4]) Hi! Sorry to step on your toes, but I go after personal attackers right away. It's perfectly OK for you to block someone who's vandalized your userpage, assuming the proper warnings have been previously given (or if it's one of our periodic serial vandals, see Wikipedia:Long term abuse. And, speaking of serial vandals, you should protect your user page and talk page against moves -- there's no reason for anyone but you to be moving those. Welcome to the team! Just astonishingly nosy...
...I have to ask. :) I've still got your talkpage on my watchlist in case further discussion comes up about CSD issues, and I've several times noticed you indicating "refactor reply". Being curious, I've peaked in to see that in fact you're just replying. (So far as I can tell.) Since refactoring a reply has such a specific meaning on Wikipedia, I just have to ask how you're using that term. Feel free to not tell me if it's some special fancy secret inside code. :D
While I'm here, how's it all going with the new admin stuff? Feel like you're getting the hang of things? :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 17:15, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- So you're like me! Refactor reply - I replied on their talk page, but copied it to my page. Improper usage of the term? As far as getting the hang of things, I've so far only blocked the test accounts (naughty, naughty test accounts), but I've deleted a potentially sensitive revision. Other than that, haven't done much. Was busy yesterday, and still getting my thank-spam out. =) xenocidic (talk) 17:17, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- LOL! Absolutely. My extremely long, overly linked comments should tell you that. :D I don't know if it's improper use to the term or not (of if it would matter). It just made me curious because I couldn't figure out what you meant by it. This was no subtle trout slapping of the disingenuous but diplomatic "Oh, gee, I bet you can give me a really good reason for deleting ANI" feigned confusion kind, just real confusion. :D I got it now.
- When I got my tools, I headed into CSDs right away as new page patrol was a major part of my work before then. It took me months to get comfortable at AfD, I've only just started helping out to any extent at CSD images, and I still don't do a lot of blocking (sometimes I'll help out at a backlog at AIV, but generally I'll wind up blocking a page creation vandal or doing a promotional username block as a side effect of CSD work). There's so so many ways to contribute, and such a never-ending need for tool users. Wherever you feel like helping out, there's bound to be a need. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 17:28, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)I'd like to ironically cut in here and say that I've also seen the "refactoring reply" a bunch of times, but I guess it's no worse than what I always use: "added comment". Useight (talk) 17:29, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Request
(copied from Keeper's talk for posterity's sake) Hey Keeper, do you mind taking a quick look at the blocks I performed today and make sure everything is in order? Especially the 3 month IP blocks (they had previously received 1-monthers) and the most recent indef for vandalism-only. Thanks, xenocidic (talk) 21:10, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Adding administrative logs
As an aside (you're doing great as far as I can tell as an admin), you may want to add the block/delete/protect logs to your userpage. It's not only a quick reference for yourself, it lets others see and link to your admin actions quickly and easily. See this section of my userpage for an example that you are welcome to copy (obviously changing it to your username). It's what I used to quickly link to your action logs. Adoption - Page Pilfering
Hi,
I'm setting up my adoptees page (for when i'm ready to adopt) and i was wondering if I could pilfer a certain table from your Adoptees page? «l| Ψrom3th3ăn ™ |l» 02:30, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

(Re [5]) No. :) . My trick is this; if you have tabbed browsing, open up a new tab with the users Special:Contributions. Then just refresh that tab every minute or so to see if they make another bad edit. That any help? I see you're going nice and slow at AIV - good stuff! It's too easy to whack the hammer. Pedro : Chat 13:24, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yep, I've been just taking 'er easy, anything I'm not sure about I'll either comment or let another admin take action so I can see what others thought appropriate. Yes, that does help. Too bad you can't RSS a user's contribs or something. xenocidic (talk) 13:27, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- And that particular school just got a seven day block for one bad edit today. Okay, there's a history and it's a school, but .... hmmmmm. Oh well, to each their own. Accounts that have degenerated into vandalism only
Wasn't quite sure what to do about this user, some constructive edits in the past, but pretty much vandalism only these days. I dropped a 24 hour, as they've not been blocked in the past. xenocidic (talk) 14:53, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, 24 hoursd is fine, and just watchlist there talk or something and indef. if they do it after their return. There as been some talk recently about not leaping in with indef. even for clear bad faith accounts - but no guideline came from the discussion IIRC. Pedro : Chat 15:26, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

My RfA
Hello, Xenocidic, and thank you for your recent participation in my RfA, which was closed per WP:NOTNOW after reaching a vote tally of 5/15/2. While I am disappointed in the outcome, I understand that it - as well as the comments left by yourself and others - was in the best interests of Wikipedia at this time. I plan to take everything that was written to heart and improve myself here on Wikipedia with a goal of perhaps accepting a nomination again in the future, should someone choose to nominate me. As a way of gathering further feedback, I have created a page in my user space for other editors to leave comments about things that they might have observed during my RfA and to continue my "education process," as it may be considered. If you would like to contribute to that page, it may be found here. Again, thank you for participating and I appreciate your comments! --InDeBiz1 (talk) 18:09, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Question on IP vandal
Sorry to bother, but I don't understand something. The IP vandal I reported earlier was given a final warning on his talk page not to disrupt the site at 20:41 at 27 May 2008. However, he did two more pieces of vandalism, at 20:55 on 27 May 2008 and 17:25 on 29 May 2008. Why is he being allowed to get away with that? Is there a statute of limitation? Thanks for clarifying that point. Ecoleetage (talk) 19:41, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Eco - the reason I didn't block the user was because blocks are meant to be preventative - not punitive. Since he hasn't edited in over a week, there is no clear and present danger to the encyclopedia. Thus, it's advisable not to submit an AIV report on a user who has been inactive for longer than 10-15 minutes. Hope that helps. See also Wikipedia:Blocking policy. xenocidic (talk) 19:44, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Understood. I got a lot to learn. Thanks! Ecoleetage (talk) 19:47, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- Twinkle is for Mozilla only, no? I am on IE. Is Huggle okay for this? Ecoleetage (talk) 20:11, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I believe twinkle works on Firefox only, but I would suggest upgrading to Firefox anyway. It's free, and much more robust than IE. ( http://www.mozilla.com ). Huggle will also do automatic reporting, yes. xenocidic (talk) 20:13, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, I will try one or the other. I was interested in helping the anti-vandal effort -- I am sort of burned out on writing, editing and AfD at the moment. Thanks Ecoleetage (talk) 20:14, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Vandalism block request for Orielense
I am still learning, so please explain. How best to proceed with this issue? I and others have attempted to contact in every way, and user is non-responsive. Do you think the soft redirect might be a better idea? If someone made the mistake once it's possible it could happen again. xenocidic (talk) 15:10, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not sure. The problem is that it's not like a regular misspelled-subject redirect. This is a redirection from a page reserved for a user. It's complicated by the fact (that I learned only after my work) that Wikipedia user "927" was the person who created the article, and who only edited for a couple of weeks before disappearing. We have no way to know whether this person was the "User 927" spoken of, or (much more likely in my opinion) just a new Wikipedian who was trying to write an article on the subject, didn't understand the basics of MediaWiki (suggested by the partial, erratic use of wiki markup) and the Wikimedia project structure, and accidentally created a user page where an article was intended.
- Having a user page point to an article page causes all kinds of peculiarities with the MediaWiki software. For instance, one can go to User:927 and check "User contributions" in an attempt to see what the infamous "User 927" has contributed to Wikipedia, and the fact that the actual Wikipedia user "927" wrote this original article would lend support to this idea. But it's almost certainly wrong and therefore very misleading.
- After trying to convey this point in writing and finding these distinctions between subject and editor difficult to make clear, I think my original idea is reinforced. If we don't delete the redirect, we'll just encourage people to make an unsubstantiated leap of illogic. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 20:21, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

- They're templated for a reason. Some users are using programs such as huggle, and there are also bots that depend on the templated warnings to determine when to automatically report a user to AIV. xenocidic (talk) 20:31, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi Xenocidic, first congrats on your recent successful RfA. I notice you marked this incident posted on ANI, as resolved. It might have been good to have asked me about this before posting there. I'm afraid that the user posting claims that the subject of an article has committed incest is a very clear breach of WP:BLP. The editor concerned is now under the impression that my warning was unjustified. I realize that you did not say that at ANI, but that's what User:Myheartinchile is now claiming. Its not a big deal, but I'd hate to have this user believe that this kind of defamatory edit was being endorsed by an admin. Best, Gwernol 01:18, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi xeno - just wanted to say that I've enjoyed your reports on FritzpollBot very much because they were balanced and informative. I shall definitely be watchlisting the Radio Wikipedia page to check out new reports by you and Stewie. Fritzpoll (talk) 14:34, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

requesting check for suspected sock puppets
as i'm a new anon ip, i will try to ask you the following:
recently on the UFO article, there seems to be the case of sockpuppets:
the admin User:Kwamikagami (aka kwami) seems to be the puppet master of User:ScienceApologist. they always agree with one another, always support one another, always protect one another and always use the same or very similair writing style. so i thought that maybe i can find another neutral admin who checks these two as kwami seems to abuse his admin rights to push the POV of SA and himself. if you feel uncomfortable doing so, please contact one of your admin colleagues and let them do the job. thx in advance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.84.19.26 (talk) 16:10, June 10, 2008 (UTC)
- I'm definitely not the best person to go to with this, I'm not even a week as an admin. I'll raise your concerns with the individuals you mentioned and a neutral admin. xenocidic (talk) 17:08, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- a'right. thank you very much. i think this is the best way to handle this issue and these concerns. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.84.19.26 (talk) 13:13, June 10, 2008
- I left messages with the two users you mentioned and another admin. Though you should know that accusing someone of sockpuppetry is a very serious allegation. Also, don't forget to sign your comments with ~~~~. xenocidic (talk) 17:14, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- while that might be true, i think it's better to make sure i'm wrong. i simply see a pattern in the behavior et all with these users...besides their obvious POV pushing. 66.84.19.26 (talk) 17:18, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- If you want to make an accusation, the appropriate place to do it is here. ScienceApologist (talk) 17:20, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

- Xeno, I've replied on my talkpage to your question. Cheers, Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 17:24, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- 66.84.x.x, I don't have time to review the lengthly debate at Talk:UFO, but it appears that this has arisen out of a content dispute where consensus has come down on "the other side". Rather than call sockpuppetry (I doubt someone who has been an admin for nearly 3 years would jeopardize the trust of the community by engaging in sockpuppetry) , perhaps seek a less contentious area of editing or accept the consensus, and move on. xenocidic (talk) 17:31, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, Xeno. SA and I have completely different interests and long edit histories, so I don't see how anyone who looked into it would think we're sockpuppets. It seems to be a case of our anon. IP being incredulous that two editors could have the same contrary opinion. kwami (talk) 17:57, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- No problem. I think perhaps a side-order of incorrect terminology use as I suggested here. IP user has since blanked his talk page with the edit summary: no need to block me because of my differing opinion...i'll take my leave now. glad i opened no account. POV and silencing at its best. <^>, so I guess that concludes this matter. Though nothing he did was block-worthy, if misguided. xenocidic (talk) 18:03, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

CoD 4
Sorry about removing that section, at first glance it seemed it was just another POV section that sometimes slips into articles; I hadn't looked at CoD 4 in a while, and the new CoD game announcement reminded me. - Thanks again, I can relate to the edit thing. And since this other situation I'm in is so similar and you're an admin now (congrats by the way, didn't know about your RfA), maybe you can recommend what to do here: On Fallout 3, is it correct to mention this as a source when saying that fans of the series are "outraged" that the Survival Edition of the game is only available in the US rather than PAL regions? The source is the developer's blog site, but the outrage only appears in the comments, not the blog part itself. Simply put, is it valid or not to include in the article? The exact policies for sources like this always blur for me. -- Comandante {Talk} 21:17, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for replying! I did read the document you suggested, but I just can't tell from what's there... thing is, if analyst sources are not acceptable, I don't want to write the article, or take up anyone's time reviewing it, since analyst reports are the only credible source I can find for the emerging technology I want to cover.

Compare the changes to the titles to the links to the Numberjacks website and you'll see he/she repeatedly changes them so they are incorrect. I reported the vandalism as soon as I saw it. Hi there. I see that you don't consider User:Icantstayaway's contributions vandalism. - No, as far as I can see the user has not responded anywhere, but has added unsourced and OR material, even after having been warned repeatedly. Re:It's been a while
(Re [13]) This one stumped me for a while, but then I noticed you were using the {{Userbox}} template. Dashboard
For your dashboard, it looks like other people are starting to copy it to their own userspace. Would you like to make the page transcludable (that's a mouthful) so others can just transclude it to a page of their choice? Or perhaps the page can be modulized so people can pick-and-choose what they want to appear on their own version of the dashboard. Gary King (talk) 19:10, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
- It should already be transcludemable. Modularization sounds fun. xenocidic (talk) 19:12, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

My RFB
Thank you for your comments in my RFB. Since it was only at 64%, it was a shoo-in to be unsuccessful, so I withdrew. I didn't want it to run until its scheduled close time because my intent in standing for RFB was to help the bureaucrats with their workload, not give them one more RfX to close. Through the course of my RFB, I received some very valuable feedback, some of it was contradictary, but other points were well agreed upon. I have ceased my admin coaching for now to give me time to revamp my method. I don't want to give up coaching completely, but I'm going to find a different angle from which to approach it. As for my RFA Standards, I am going to do some deep intraspection. I wrote those standards six months ago and I will slowly retool them. This will take some time for me to really dig down and express what I want in an admin candidate. If, after some serious time of deep thought, I don't find anything to change in them, I'll leave them the way they are. I'm not going to change them just because of some community disagreement as to what they should be. Will I stand for RFB again in the future? I don't know. Perhaps some time down the road, when my tenure as an administrator is greater than one year, if there is a pressing need for more active bureaucrats, maybe. If there no pressing need, then maybe not. Useight (talk) 03:00, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

hi xenocidic, i apologise for the rather abusive and somewhat insulting behaviour. i didn't originally create the page 'Callum Stroud' but i know who did and they told me to look at it. i came on to look at and to my slight annoyment, it had been deleted. As i did not know the content of this page, i don't know how oit violated the rules of Wikipedia. i was annoyed at not being able to read what my friend had put about me and thought i would leave a message to show my annoyment. i realise that it was immature and irresponsible.please do not block me. i will now delete the page and ensure it doesn't happen again. many thanks, Stroudi —Preceding unsigned comment added by Stroudi (talk • contribs) 16:05, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Dance Dance Revolution (Game Boy versions)
(Re [15]) There doesn't appear to have been a consensus, just a few changes made by Link as he promoted his position on the subject. The title "hand held versions" is too vague, as there's plans for a "Cell phone versions" article as well (which would also fall under hand held games). And merging those two articles would make it too large. Game Boy versions is the best fit in this case and I have to take any proposal from Link to the Past with a grain of salt as I've encountered him many times making over zealous changes that few or no one agrees with. In the end it's still a case by case idea, I believe that sorting by system instead of type is better given the amount of broad-based DDR articles there are and will be. --AeronPrometheus (talk) 18:47, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Dashboard idea
Is there a way to get the "immediate requests" box to update when there are current requests for rollback? I think the requests get filled relatively quickly, so maybe unnecessary/moot as most admins that grant userrrights watchlist the RFR page. Just a thought though, Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 19:08, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
- I'll take a look when I get home. Heading out the door this second =). xenocidic (talk) 19:13, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
- Inexcusable! Fix it now!!! Actually, I think it wouldn't work, because there isn't a CAT to link to "current requests". But I'm a techno-n00b, so I could be really just talking gibberish...Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 19:15, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hows this - when there are unanswered requests for rollback, a section will appear in the table of contents "Rollback requests". If there are no requests, there will be no such section. Good enough? Will work as long as someone doesn't futz up the Rollback requests page. xenocidic (talk) 21:47, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

- You've done well, grasshopper. You've done well. I bow at your feet, o technologically gifted one. - Heh, no problem, you too. As long as the WP:RFR page doesn't get futz with, it should work well. I gave you credit for the idea in the documentation of the dashboard. xenocidic (talk) 01:54, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

- Certainly! The dashboard is at User:Xenocidic/dashboard. You can copy the code, or preferably, just transclude it somewhere in your userspace. Or you could even just use it right from my page, but then you wouldn't get added to the user's list =). The Training Wiki
Hey Xenocidic,
Are you interested in helping me Founder a "Trainig Wiki" for adoptees (and adopters), admin coaching/ers to be able to try out various things (including admin tools) in an enviroment that is based entirely on Wikipedia (with appropriate Attribution).
This wiki will also be used for testing media wiki extentions that could be implemented in all the wikimedia foundation projects, but thats up to thwem we can only provide feedback on the extention page..
You may say "this idea has already been done", well you could not be more from the truthe. Ive seen the most common wiki that attempt's to give users experiance with the tools, but this wiki is noway similar to wikipedia (i mean they're not even running the same version or templates etc to try)
Have a think about it and get back to me «l| Ψrom3th3ăn ™|l» (talk) 10:32, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
- To be honest, I don't really have time to work on another wiki, I'm also not sure how much benefit there is in giving users admin tools in a clinical environment like a test wiki. Really and truly, the tools themselves are not that difficult to use, it's in the application of said tools to real-world situations that requires experience. xenocidic (talk) 14:02, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
Re: Not a barnstar
(Re [17]) Thanks! The code was so straightforward that this has inspired me to consider embarking on tweaking other things in scripts to my liking. (It sounds like you had a similar experience with your modification) Never done JavaScript before, but it just looks like a pretty basic C++-style language with duck-typing.
Kinda funny that there was >5k of hand-wringing over that issue, and it literally was like a single line of code to change the script so that Kelly wouldn't have that problem in the future. ha ha ha... --Jaysweet (talk) 14:27, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

Archiving
(Re [19]) Why? On my talk, you made the claim "Cutting and pasting is typically preferable to page-move archiving." Where did you get this information? WP:ARCHIVE gives the pros and cons of both, and I personally prefer page moving. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 20:32, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

- Not really It is not clear that there is a consensus for copy-and-paste moving for two reasons: 1.) three out of 5 million members does not consensus make and 2.) if anyone was pleased with the move-archive method, he wouldn't complain on my talk in the first place. I prefer move archiving to copy-and-paste; I realize other editors disagree and that is fine with me as well. But it remains to be seen that one is necessarily better than the other and as you point out, there is not a policy obliging one method. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 21:31, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

Bureacracy at its finest...
Looking through random articles, I become interested in Edison's Conquest of Mars (nothing to do really with the point of this), so I look it up on Barnes & Noble's site. There, I see a passing reference to Catch-22, and in turn look up the plot here. I eventually find this and this.
Basically, there's an article for every character in the book, no matter how obscure, and I have no idea why all of this wasn't condensed onto the list of characters page in more succinct descriptions. Since overlooked stuff like this irritates me (enough to post this here at almost 2 AM), I am considering putting all of the character articles in an AfD: none of them assert notability or have sources, and since when do we need an article for every character in a book? Sure, I could just start up a merge discussion, but I doubt that would work; I don't even want to take on the task of a merge like that, so I don't see why anyone else would want to, unless a sizable group of editors got together and did it all at once. Even if there is a merge, most of the less important character articles should be deleted rather than become redirects, which is a lot of deletions.
Anyway, I know something should be done about this, but I don't even know where to begin. Is it even possible to put so many articles up for deletion at once? I'm just at a loss of how to handle the matter (I hesitated before posting this and thought of ignoring it, but hey, it's 2 AM so why not?). -- Comandante {Talk} 05:50, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I squared my jaw and went to work, and decided I can't possibly do it alone. It appears there were previous efforts to try and merge the pages together, but nothing happened. I guess no one else wants to take on such a load. Putting some thought into it, I think this is what needs to be done:
- Merge all Catch-22 character articles (except for this and this, more detailed, possibly notable) into List of characters in Catch-22.
- Identify the major/important characters of the novel; I haven't read the book so I'm not in a position to do this.
- Delete all of the articles on the unnamed characters, as well as the majority of named characters who aren't significant in the plot; I don't believe there's a need for so many obscure redirects.
- Convert the undeleted articles about the more significant characters into redirects to the main list.
- Clean up Template:Catch-22, and put it on the Catch-22 article; it isn't there for whatever reason.
- Or, Option B-urrito: We ignore all of this, you delete these comments, and I forget the issue by eating this burrito in my fridge. Kind of sad just letting this go (nags at my organizational side), but I figure if we can't do it, we can't do it. This kind of cleanup needs manpower and gusto, which are at a premium this day and age ("someone else will do it eventually," etc.). But I ramble, so -- Comandante {Talk} 07:10, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- Interesting. I always thought Catch-22 was written by Kurt Vonnegut? Maybe I'm thinking of something else. Anyhow, what to do with these? They've been around for an awful long time. Since the main article claims that this is "cited as one of the great literary works of the Twentieth century" then I suppose it does deserve some deeper discussion, but many of these characters articles are completely unreferenced and based on primary sources. Is Maid with the lime-colored panties deserving of her own article? Certainly not, perhaps merge with Lime-colored panties ( I keed ). Anyhow, as you said, this is indeed a monstrous task, perhaps one that may best be prompted by a mass AFD, which I've seen before in the past. Anyhow, just so you know your burrito comment really made me hungry this morning. I'm going to ask someone who is more experienced with deletion to comment. 12:23, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- copied from keeper 76's talk page Ouch! Why'd you poke me? I'm tellin' mom....With a title like "bureacracy at its finest", I was holding my breath expecting the worst...whew. It's about content! How refreshing! I agree with Commandante - those need some massive pruning/deleting, especially the "unnamed characters". How silly for standalone articles, and completely implausible search terms. The "Catch-22" in all of this is that anyone who hasn't read the book won't find them notable, and anyone who has, because it is a fantastic book, will argue that they are all notable. I don't think a mass AFD is the way to go, too pointy. I think BOLDNESS is the way to go, with a dash of IAR. Before deleting anything though, because it is such a prolificly available and popular book, there are no doubt countless reviews/dissections—probably graduate papers, on the book and the characters. If a few sources can fix the WP:OR problem, perhaps they can be salvaged? I'm talking about the "named characters", not the ridiculous maids and whores and whore's sisters...Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 13:44, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- Xenocidic: Thanks for taking a look at it. As I may have mentioned, I'm probably not the best person to go around and point out the significant characters since I haven't even read the book. By the way I've opted for Option C-oming to my fridge to eat the burrito; all of the burrito and none of ignorance of Option B-urrito. Anyway, I'm willing to do something to help clean up the articles, I just need to be pointed in the right direction or something (but I'm not reading the book for this; I already have six novels for summer reading for my AP classes, so my hard-worker side is swamped). Whenever someone comes up with a plan, I'll be there (unless no one tells me about the plan; people have a tendency to forget to inform me of important stuff, like the field trip bus leaves at 5:00 AM...). Thanks again. -- Comandante {Talk} 16:54, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- Perhaps another course of action would be to try figure out who is an active contributor to these articles and gently suggest they perform some merging into the List of chars article. xenocidic (talk) 16:58, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Using Sparknotes, I believe I've weeded out the lesser characters. Here I've altered the template to contain only the major characters, which either are notable enough for their own articles or just enough to not warrant deletion. These are mainly notable becuase they personally affect the main character, John Yossarian, or represent the significant failings of the military bureacracy in relation to Yossarian's squadron and thus impact the plot. I'll start getting to some of the active editors and begin merging the lesser notable characters to the main list; found a spare hour or two in my schedule today. -- Comandante {Talk} 18:35, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Good evening. This message has been addressed to you because you happened to be around at the time. I wish to add the moniker "Lex Orwell" to the proposition section of this article on the basis of this, but I am biased as all hell and as such wish for an outsider's opinion. Don't consider yourself under any obligation to answer. --Kizor 13:07, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
- Something like this at the end of the first paragraph would probably be appropriate -
The proposed law has been nicknamed "Lex Orwell", in reference to the book [[Nineteen Eighty-Four|1984]] by [[George Orwell]].<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/article4158509.ece|title=Swedish revolt over 'Big Brother' law|date=2008-06-17|accessdate=2008-06-19|publisher=TimesOnline|author=Roger Boyes}}</ref>

User talk:68.13.151.71
Just wanted to give you a heads-up that I partially reverted User talk:68.13.151.71 as this vandal is correct that WP:USER gives this IP the right to remove (almost all) messages at will from his or her own talk page. --Kralizec! (talk) 14:07, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hrm, I was under the impression that block templates were not to be removed for the duration of the block. xenocidic (talk) 14:10, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
- Warnings and old block templates may be removed, but not current blocks, IIRC. This way, if someone else uses the IP they can see the block and understand what's going on. Enigma message 14:13, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

- See, WP:USER doesn't really address IP talk pages, at least sufficiently. To me, the IP talk page is not their talk page - it's the IP's. If you want your own talk page with the right to blank warnings and do whatever you want, create an account. Tan | 39 14:19, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
- Good point. xenocidic (talk) 14:19, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
- Tan, I agree that IPs shouldn't blank their own talk pages, but the policy constantly stated at the noticeboards is that they too have the right to remove warnings and it's a sign that they've been read. This doesn't address dynamic IPs, though... In short, I disagree with what's been stated as policy. Enigma message 14:21, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yes. Really, this is a great example of when we should ignore policy. What's best for the project? If the anonymous editor clearly isn't being constructive, I see no reason why I should allow them to blank anything off their talk page, when that history could be useful for a future admin to see how long the problem has lasted. Tan | 39 14:25, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Actually the issue was rehashed several months ago at WP:VPP, and the clear consensus was that both registered and anonymous editors have the same rights under WP:USER. In fact, the "policy does not prohibit users, including both registered and anonymous users, from removing comments from their own talk pages" part of WP:BLANKING was explicitly updated in the hope that it would permanently resolve exactly these sorts of issues.
While I share no love for the jerk behind this IP address (indeed two of this IP's three most recent blocks were from me), I do not see how the project is benefited by we-in-the-admin-community reverting this talk page to the version we like when the anonymous editor in question is actually following WP:USER. --Kralizec! (talk) 15:27, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
- Well, in following WP:USER, he violated WP:NPA (even while you were trying to help him). Anyhow, I still think block templates should remain for the duration of the block, and I'm fairly sure I read that somewhere. I'll keep poking around. xenocidic (talk) 15:30, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
- I completely agree with your protecting the page; after all I had just warned the IP two minutes before that those sorts of edits would "not be tolerated." However none of this changes the fact that this anonymous editor's USER-granted right to remove messages from his or her own talk page has been violated. (And in case you are wondering why I am defending the rights of someone whom I have a very low opinion of ... I am a strong believer in the importance of process.) --Kralizec! It wasn't that big of a deal...
Yeah, Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Ali'i wasn't closed right on time. It's not that big of a deal, though; the closing time is just the earliest it can be closed, not the exact moment that it will be closed. !votes are still valid after the scheduled ending time. (you mentioned that there was an oppose placed after the closing time, but just take a look at the numbers: that one oppose wasn't what killed that RfA)
And to answer your question of "crats, wru", I was on my lunch break. Please keep in mind that we are all volunteers. If I were getting paid to be a bureaucrat, I assure you, I would have made sure that I was by my computer when the RfA was scheduled to end. But I'm not, so it wasn't as important to me as, say, eating and then getting back to my day job.
Also, please don't add {{Closing}} to RfAs.RfAs aren't something that editors and admins can close; with very few exceptions, they should only be closed by bureaucrats, so right off the bat, the template is inaccurate. EVula // talk // ☯ // 18:34, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

How does the fact that it happened 5 hours ago, rather than 5 minutes, make any difference as to whether they should be blocked? Kevin Forsyth (talk) 12:56, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- According to the blocking policy, blocks are meant to prevent disruption, as opposed to be punitive. If the IP is no longer vandalizing at the time, it shouldn't be blocked because there is no ongoing disruption. See also the instructions at the top of WP:AIV. - I don't think that's possible. You'll have to wait it out, unfortunately. As for the article you asked about above, it needs a huge cleanup. If you feel up to copyediting it, go for it. I'm off for the night. happy editing, xenocidic (talk) 04:03, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

I have reverted a good number of pages now, and i get the hang of it. Can you please allow me to use it now? If so, thanks. IUf not, im still reverting anyway, just thought Rollback might make it easier. Tratos theGreat —Preceding comment was added at 16:41, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- It's too early to grant rollback, you've only made a handful of undo's, and not all of them were correct. Continue using the undo button for a few weeks. xenocidic (talk) 16:43, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

- Yes, I am an admin. How can I help you? xenocidic (talk) 15:27, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your help. Here is the situation:
- I went in to do some edits on the following article: List of films receiving six or more Academy Awards.
- I saw that the article was moved and renamed to the following article: List of films receiving five or more Academy Awards.
- This edit was done by a user named: User:Milk's Favorite Cookie.
- I was confused by this edit / renaming / move for several reasons. The most important being that: (a) the article only involves films with six or more (not five or more) Academy Awards; and (b) there was no discussion on the article's Talk Page (Talk:List of films receiving six or more Academy Awards).
- I reverted the edit and moved / renamed the article back to its original name.
- To seek clarification about this issue, I placed the following question on the changing editor's Talk Page: User Talk:Milk's Favorite Cookie#List of films receiving six or more Academy Awards.
- Today, I noticed that the changing editor: (a) reverted my edit back to his previous edit; and (b) did not respond to the question I placed on his Talk Page.
- So, can you please intervene? This makes no sense (to me) and I have no intention of getting into some futile argument with this editor if: (a) he is taking unreasonable actions such as these; and (b) he is ignoring my reasonable questions seeking to clarify the situation. Thank you. Please intervene and please advise. Please reply at my Talk Page. Thanks for your help. (Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 15:37, 20 June 2008 (UTC))

2nd opinion
As you've been dealing with him as well, do you have any thoughts about whether this is a good-faith editor going wildly astray or yet another 4chan troll? Having been sucked into about three simultaneous flamewars today, none of which involved me, I'm aware that my AGF levels are lower than usual so I don't really want to start blocking myself. – iridescent 23:27, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
- I've been trying to AGF all day, and I tried to point out that he made probably 10 times as many edits about his signature than he has to mainspace articles. Could he one day become a good contributor? I don't know. An awful lot of myspacing going on, though. –xenocidic (talk) 23:29, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

k, 2 questions
1. In Wiktionary, is there still admins and the samne rules as wikipedia? Because i am REALLY good with words, and im creating an account for there too. And 2. I made a page for my sandbox. The edits i make there, will they count against me if i make a lot of them? (ie disruptive editing). Because i still need to test things out, and i almost got blocked for that :(.

- Don't look at me — I've never patrolled a new page in my entire time here... Incidentally, if you want to go vandal-hunting the first contributions of newly created accounts is an excellent place to catch the spammers and vandals, and far less patrolled then the IPs at NewPages, which these days generally get trawled by the Huggle net. – iridescent 01:32, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Request for Rollback
Xenocidic, This may be too early, but if possible, I would love the Rollback feature added to my account. I have been using Twinkle a bit, but I would rather have the feature on my account. You've blocked a few IPs that I have reported (if that goes for anything :P). Anyway, tell me when to reapply if you can't give it to me now, or whatever.
DavidWS (talk) 19:38, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hi David, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but it is definitely too soon to grant rollback; you've only been editing for two days. That being said, your recent reverts using Twinkle have been nearly spot on. (at least the ones I looked at). Keep up the good work and ask again/apply to WP:RFR in a couple weeks. –xenocidic (talk) 19:45, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
Hi, I saw your reply---after I request rollback on the RFR page. User:Tivedshambo added rollback to my account. Sorry for requesting it in two different places, I was just thinking I might as well put it on the "official" request page. DavidWS (talk) 17:37, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
- Not a problem. heck, if I had some more ground between me and my RFA, I probably would've granted it yesterday. Your twinkle use clearly showed high levels of clue, and I did feel a little silly asking you to wait a couple weeks before giving you a tool that would speed up your vandal-fighting work. happy huggling, –xenocidic (talk) 17:39, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

What's the difference here?
The IP I just reported from Best Buy is a display machine. It hasn't been warned often so got off with a 1 day block. 198.22.123.103 is the machine right next to it on the same display table. It's been blocked for 6 months. What's the difference here? DarkAudit (talk) 18:40, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
It's already been blocked by another admin, I was just commenting on the edits.Sorry, just re-read your comment. Welcome to Wikinews!
Im sure you understand most of Wikinews policy (as they are similar to Wikipedia) but here is the Wikinews welcome message anyway, delivered to your Wikipedia talk page as Wikipedia is your home project:
Xenocidic, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!
- Wikinews:Neutral point of view - tell every side to a story in a fair and balanced way
- Wikinews:Cite sources - everything in a Wikinews article must be sourced
Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:
- Wikinews:Introduction - overview of the site
- Wikinews:Writing an article - how to write and publish a complete article
- Wikinews:Content guide - what's suitable for Wikinews
- Wikinews:Style guide - how articles should look before publishing
- Wikinews:Contents - the contents page.
There are always things to do on Wikinews:
- Existing articles need expanding and checking for spelling and mistakes
- The front page lead articles often need updating|
- Developing stories need finishing and publishing
- Discussions need your input
- Audio Wikinews could always use more contributors
- And of course, stories need writing!
By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler| or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome!Anonymous101 (talk) 19:12, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

unblock-un requests
Just a note -- I saw your response at User talk:Dynotech, and in general requests to change username when the username was the issue don't need to be discussed with the blocking admin. Username blocks are normally intended to be non-judgemental of the user, only the name, so if they agree to change name they should be allowed to. (It is worth checking that there wasn't another reason for the block, such as vandalism or spamming. Sometimes people get blocked with the username block template when they really should be blocked for other reasons like {{test7}} or {{spamusername}}.) Anyway, just a friendly note, hope it helps. Mangojuicetalk 13:59, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Are websites with Google ads NOT valid resources?
(Re [34]) i also visit About.com which I believe has very valuable information (that is MY opinion only) and it is "plastered" with sponsored links. Are "sponcored links" the same as google ads by wikipedia standards? or does wikipedia believe that ANY site with these types of ads, regardless of the information, research or contribution of user desired information is not worthy of being noted?
Ok, maybe I am being ironic, sorry! but I feel that its kina dumb, I mean even wikipedia asks for money, i personally have a blog (with no ads on it) but its for personal expression only, and i don't put links on wikipedia to it.
personally I felt that Wikipedia should be a source of unbiased, uncensored information as long as there is no advertising (spamming) or garbage. but lets face it, the bios of Warren Bennis, Robin Sharma (books wise), and many others is basic PR. yet it seems to be no problem because people (including myself) are interested. and FYI, i never even heard of Warren Bennis (and many others) before going to the leadership gurus site, but i did appreciate the article on wikipedia about him.
the links i was placing was to a "LIST" of people you already have on wikipedia, PR for them or not, they are on wikipedia already (you can always take them off if you want, that is not my place). and whether the site has google ads or not, personally i don't care, i just like to know stuff like this, and thought others might too. also the idea of voting honestly is turn-on. i have heard about 6 of these guys speak (only one do i know personally, and he is not on wikipedia), some are boring some are exciting
so what do i do now, stand by the sidelines and let people tell me what i can and cannot do? what is right and what is wrong? or should i stand my ground and fight for what i believe in - freedom of information and expression, and the desire to give value to others? and keep on trying to give what i feel is valuable, and that would include an article on Arthur Carmazzi who personally think is a great man (but then again, that is my opinion).
can you please give me some real guidance and not just blow me off like some of the others.
Marcie

got my account
hi Xenocidic
i got my account. i am passionate about Psychology and how to lead people. i have really learned a lot from these gurus, there books, articles, websites... i want to make a difference. i am still young and have a lot to learn and do in my life, knowledge is hobby and i want to share it. so how? honestly i don't do lots of research and dig deep into stuff myself, thats why i come here and other sites where the research has already been done. for example http://leadershipnow.com it is a commercial site, but it has sooo much great information in it. and it was voted #1 leadership blog of the year in 2008, wouldn't that be something others may be interested in?
in this day and age it is very difficult to separate anything valuable from commercialism, simply because much of the reason people come up with the good stuff is to make money. i personally think that John Maxwell's rank on number 1 is spot on, i heard him speak and the guy is truly a master, but the links go to his commercial AND religious websites. Who says he is the number one, don't know but i do believe. commercial status should that have any relevance in my desire to go to his commercial site to get info.
and in about.com, again, sooo much valuable information. do you know how much time it takes to find these things? it would be so nice if wikipedia could acknowledge that its followers, like me, could go to find lots of information. much of the criteria set seems to be related to historical fact. but new gurus like Maxwell still get the PR and commercial benefit without violation??? not that i am against it, i appreciate the links. just don't think there should be double standards.
as for the 1000 people voting on the bad leader on the leadershipgurus site, now you are being ironic, tisk tisk. i am guessing you read the criteria - http://www.leadershipgurus.net/leadership_award.html
also, what about proven methods like Directive Communication psychology, wildly used in asia, but not in ammerica where most of the wiki editors are, so they don't think its valid because they don't read asian newpapers and media. and they don't even want to look at the proof. i had a bad experience with this.
oh, by the way, i am living in asia, where are you?
also, what does Xenocidic mean?
sorry i rambled. what do you think i should do now?

Hi Xeno
submitted to the link you suggested.
beside that, what else can i do. i know a but most of what i know is not my own, it is someone elses ideas like Maxwell or Blanchard...
oh, and you name, not sure if that's good, i mean its strong and all, but what if aliens are not really invading and it just looks like it, then wouldn't it be bad to destroy them? i remember this really old black and white movie, don't remember the name, but it had this giant robot that was like the police for the universe. only remember the earth was saved because the alien got a message to the robot "klitu barata nicto" - do you know that movie? kinda makes you think.
anyway have a chipper day :) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hotmarcie (talk • contribs) 12:38, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Regarding Username Report for Yougonnagethacked
Hey Xeno, just wondering what your opinion is for a length of time to attempt discussion with a user about a (possibly) inappropriate username? Haven't really done this before, and I would guess that whoever does eventually block would use their judgement, but would like a bit of a ball-park figure for time before I recommend RFCN. Cheers — Relyimah (t-c-e) 23:36, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hrm I'll admit usernames for attention isn't really my area of expertise, but from what I understand if a user isn't actively editing than there's no real cause for concern. If the user doesn't get back to you, and doesn't start editing, I'm not sure that any actions needs to be taken. Though, feel free to seek a second opinion from an admin more active at UAA. –xenocidic (talk) 01:57, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback -- Username has been blocked anyway — Relyimah (t-c-e) 08:01, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Radio Wikipedia Re-Design
Hello Xenocidic, I, StewieGriffin! • Talk Sign Listen, have redesigned the Radio Wikipedia main page. You may be interested in Wikipedia:Radio_Wikipedia#Staff, as it details Who Reports When? and the current staff. I am sure you already know our uploading instructions, but that is there too. Just so you know:
- Saturday 28 June 2008: Xenocidic
- Sunday 29 June 2008: Red Thunder
- Monday 30 June 2008: StewieGriffin!
And before you reserve Tuesday, we have a new instruction. Anyway, Thanks and I look forward to your episode. StewieGriffin! • Talk Sign Listen 21:21, 27 June 2008 (UTC) PS: I understand you know this, but remember a 3 Minute Show is the max. PPS: I would also like to say, we won't use a system like X, RT, SG, X,... instead users will just reserve episodes the previous day.
User page protection
Sorry to trouble you again, but another question (not article related): is there anything to prevent me from getting most of my user pages semi-protected at WP:RFP? I haven't really had anyone vandalize my pages except once or twice a while back, but I don't want my watchlist cluttered by my own user pages and I prefer excess caution over unpreparedness. In other words, is it possible to ask for semi-protection for some of my user pages when there isn't really a serious reason to? -- Comandante {Talk} 21:28, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
- I'm fairly sure there is no problem semi'ing your pages on request, just provide a list of the one's you want protected and I'll do it for you. You can also think about making a subpage-only changelist as I've done at User:Xenocidic/misc. –xenocidic (talk) 21:47, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
- Much obliged. Here's the list of all my user pages: [36]. Just protect everything except the sandbox and the two monobook pages. I'll consider the subpage changelist, but I don't think I have enough pages to seriously need it yet. -- Comandante {Talk} 22:37, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
- Done! –xenocidic (talk) 23:26, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Rpotd nomination
Greetings. On the template issue, perhaps you can help with my nomination of Template:Rpotd. I am somewhat at a loss with what to do with that mess, so the TfD nom was sortof a default action. Any advice would be great. Or you can go ahead and speedy the mess with a bulk tool. =) Thanks. --Thetrick (talk) 15:25, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yikes - the RPOTD "father" template is linked on a great number of pages. On this one, I'd probably suggest "back away slowly" or "run in the other direction" (read: it can probably be safely ignored; perhaps withdraw the nom?). –xenocidic (talk) 15:32, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
- True, it is all over the place (though less than 100 links/transclusions). But the effort seems dead and was non-encyclopedic to begin with. And nobody has complained yet despite the visible nomination warning. Is there a tool that can do bulk moves? If all those RPOTD/xxx templates were in GeorgeMoney's namespace I probably wouldn't have made the nom. --Thetrick (talk) 16:01, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
- I think that admins can move all subpages recursively. Let the TFD run I suppose and see what the outcome is. The only problem would be update all the usages, which would be a PITA. It is borderline encyclopedic IMO. –xenocidic (talk) 18:09, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Hey. Can you semi-protect my userpage? it gets heavy IP vandalism. Acalamari did it before, but it seems to have worn off. Shapiros10 contact meMy work 14:00, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
- Done, it looks like some tweaks were done to your userpage for privacy concerns, and that's why the protection was no longer active. Keep in mind it's best not to disclose too much information about yourself. –xenocidic (talk) 14:03, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi there. I just tagged this article with a speedy as the author requested it be deleted. Please see the talk page. If you did and still decline it then that's cool, i just wanted to check that you see the deletion request. Ged UK (talk) 15:10, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
- Right, I declined it as WP:CSD#G7 only applies when the only editor requests deletion; there's been some other substantive contributions by other editors. I did initially delete per G7, but then realized my mistake. –xenocidic (talk) 15:11, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

G7
I swear when I looked at the article history none of that stuff was there, especially not the previous G7 noms... that's the only reason I put the CSD tag on it. Is there anything that can cause the history to be "hidden"? I have no idea what happened... Livitup (talk) 16:43, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

UBX migration
(Re [41]) Good point, and thanks for the template. Quite a few of the users seemed either inactive completely, or not active enough to warrant contacting, but I suppose it's only polite. However, if they were created back in 2005/6 it can probably be assumed that they've been forgotten about. I suppose I'm just impatient and past experience tells me that I'm unlikely to get a response :P. Thanks anyway and I'll try contacting people and see what kind of response I get. - Heh, I could well see that happening, although the edit histories are preserved. I hope you don't mind if I nick your system (60 days/48h seems sensible, I'll need to log the UBXn somewhere...), it may cut down on my workload too, if people move them themselves (although transclusions will still need updating). Thanks again. RichardΩ612 Ɣ ɸ 21:57, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
