:::A pedantic distinction that has no bearing on the reader's perception of the words used. In this case, ''world'' comes across as an attempt to distinguish the history concerned from history elsewhere – on Mars, perhaps. Interesting, captain. Revision as of 21:03, 8 September 2016

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 05:10 on 20 July 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors in the current Did you know...

  • The following DYK states that an actor was cast as a "female Ferengi". As Ferengi is a race, the hook needs to state that the actor was cast as a "Ferengi". Otherwise it's like saying there are Ferengi, then there are female Ferengi - there are humans, then there are female humans. This is incorrect. Incorrect hook is as follows: that prior to casting Andrea Martin as the female Ferengi Ishka on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, David Livingston suggested Wallace Shawn in drag? MurielMary (talk) 09:04, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't the hook simply trying to emphasise that it was a female role? The Rambling Man (talk) 09:24, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Concur. There are Ferengi, there are female Ferengi, and there are male Ferengi. A female human got the role ahead of a male human. Stephen 09:57, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with Stephen & Rambling Man, but in different ways. Had the role been that of a male Ferengi AND the gender not the specific point of the clip, the gender adjective would almost certainly have been omitted (eg, per Armin_Shimerman, "Ferengi bar owner" and not "male Ferengi bar owner"). For this purpose at least, it is an irrelevant exercise whether the gender would have been included for a female role, absent the gender being the specific point of the clip. - Tenebris — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.11.171.90 (talk) 13:15, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The article describes the character of Ishka as originally being conceived as "a feminist" and "Ferengi a women's libber". The very process of developing the character was inserting gender. If Quark had been developed as "a male chauvinist" or "a really macho male" that would do the same thing. And if women actors were first considered to portray a chauvinist male, it would be mentioned, because at the very least the joke would be in the gender. Although, I guess one might say that the entire Ferengi culture was macho male, so Ishka's female character was important to note she was female. — Maile (talk) 14:05, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in today's or tomorrow's On this day

  • The Battle of Lake George entry says the two combatants fought to a draw, but the article's infobox says it was a British strategic victory, while the article itself in the aftermath section says it was a British victory. Banedon (talk) 04:18, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
