Yeh Hai Mohabbatein (English: This Is Love).[1] is an Indian soap opera on Star Plus. It first aired on December 3, 2013[2] and airs from Monday to Sunday at 07:30 pm. This soap opera was created by Ekta Kapoor and was produced by her production company Balaji Telefilms.[3] The story is partially based on Manju Kapur's novel Custody.[4] Set in Delhi,[5][6] the show follows the love story of Dr. Ishita Iyer, who is a Tamil dentist and Raman Kumar Bhalla, who is a Punjabi CEO. Ishita is sterile and gets attached emotionally to Raman's daughter, Ruhi, who lives with her divorced father. Raman's ex-wife, Shagun, lives with her boyfriend Ashok Khanna and Aditya, her son with Raman. Due to circumstances, Raman and Ishita marry each other.[7] The show has got good response and has received high ratings throughout its run and is currently regarded as the best show on Indian television. The show took a 7-year leap in April 2016.[8][9] Till now, the show has won 50 awards. On December 9, 2016 the show completed 1,000 episodes.[10][11]
Plot
The show follows the love story of Ishita Iyer, who is a Tamil dentist and Raman Kumar Bhalla, who is a Punjabi CEO, who both live in the capital city of India, Delhi. Ishita is sterile and gets attached emotionally to Raman's daughter, Ruhi, who lives with her divorced father. Raman's ex-wife, Shagun Arora, lives with her boyfriend and Raman's ex-boss and business rival, Ashok Khanna, and Aditya (Adi), her and Raman's son. Bhallas and Iyers are neighbors. Due to circumstances, Raman and Ishita marry each other for Ruhi's custody and gradually fall in love with each other and lead a happy life.
Shagun creates trouble in Ishita and Raman's life. Shagun wants to marry Ashok and Ishita's sister Mihika is marrying Shagun's brother Mihir. Mihir treats Raman as his brother. Ashok tries to molest Mihika. Shagun and Ashok's marriage is cancelled. Ashok blackmails Mihika and Mihika marries him to save Mihir. Soon Raman's son Aditya(Adi) with Shagun also comes to them and lives with them. Shagun tries to create troubles in Ishita and Raman's marriage using Adi but she fails. Ishita gets Raman's sister Rinky and Mihir married.Shagun leaves Bhalla house. Mihika reveals true reason behind marrying Ashok and divorces him. Raman's brother Romi marries a pregnant Sarika. Romi had left her before but later accepted her for his son Rohit. Ishita's ex-fiance Subramaniam Chandran/Subbu returns in Ishita's life. Subbu tried to created problems in Raman and Ishita's life to revenge. But later his misunderstanding is cleared. Shagun also turns positive and everyone started living a good life.
Sarika starts supporting Ashok because Ashok, knows Sarika's secret. Sarika had lied to Romi that Rohit is his son. Sarika had a miscarried Romi's child. She adopted baby from an orphanage. Romi gets to know about this truth and throws Sarika out of his life. Mihir's wife and Raman's sister Rinky is murdered. Shagun is marrying Ishita's doctor Manoj Paul. Ishita took Manoj's treatment and gets pregnant. Ishita has a miscarriage due to an accident. Shagun becomes surrogate mother for Ishita's baby. Nidhi Chabra a successful lawyer enters in Raman's life, who had come to take revenge from Raman for her father's death. Before Raman's marriage with Shagun, Raman's mother Toshi was finding marriage alliance for Raman. She had taken marriage proposal to Chabra house. But Raman rejected it because at that time he loved Shagun. Nidhi's father died because of that.She became Ishita's lawyer and framed Ishita in a murder case. In order to get proof of Ishita's innocence, Raman fakes love for Nidhi. He finds the evidence that proves Ishita innocent. Nidhi gets arrested, but she runs away.
Shagun gives birth to Ishita's daughter Pihu. Nidhi kidnaps Pihu from hospital. Nidhi asks Raman to give Ruhi to her and take Pihu with him and asks him not to inform the police. Raman does the same but Ishita secretly calls the police to the place. Unfortunately, things didn't happen as expected and Ishita takes Pihu but Nidhi ran away with Ruhi and both of them were declared as dead in a car accident. Post this accident, Raman gets completely shaken and blames Ishita as she has informed the police, he scolded her a lot. Ishita also couldn't bear Ruhi's death and attempts suicide recalling Ruhi's death and Raman's bitter words and she is declared dead. Everybody is shocked. Mihika blames Raman for Ishita's suicide. Romi also breaks all his ties with Raman because Raman had said that Romi was keeping eye on Pihu in hospital but Nidhi successfully kidnapped Pihu. Ishita is saved by her friend Abhimanyu Raghav(Mani) who meets with accident while saving Ishita.

Production
The show is produced by Ekta Kapoor under her banner of Balaji Telefilms. The show was first called Mera Tera Rishta Purana but later was changed to Ye Hai Mohabbatein. Cezanne Khan(who is well famous for his role of Anurag in Kasautii Zindagii Kay) was first approached to play the main lead opposite Divyanka Tripathi, but later Karan Patel was finalized to play Raman Bhalla. Ruhanika Dhawan was opted to play Ruhi Bhalla. The supporting cast was finalised with the names of Ali Goni, Shruti Bapna, Neena Kulkarni, Mihika Verma, Shireen Mirza, Shahnaz Rizwan, Sumeet Sachdev, Abhay Bhargava, Pankaj Bhatia, Gautam Ahuja amongst others. Anita Hassanandani Reddy and Sangram Singh were roped in to play the negative roles.After 7 years leap, Aditi Bhatia was finalized to play grown up Ruhi.Ruhanika Dhawan stayed back in show for playing Ishita and Raman's daughter Pihu. Abhishek Verma was finalized to play grown up Adi.Krishna Mukherjee was finalized to play Aliya who is Abhimanyu Raghav(Mani)'s niece and Adi's love interest.
Reception
Despite being on run for nearly two years it was still one of the highest rated show on Indian television in January 2016 when it was ranked third in TRP ratings chart.[28]
