Cortenuova

Hallo, Attilios. well, I know what you mean regarding English sources, But in this case i really think the sources given are credible and trustworthy. German sources like Dieterich or others like Parisiensis, have similar accounts of the battle. Concerning the number 10,000. I think its possible, the Saracens at Cortenuova were Archers, as pietro della vigna recorded with "emptying their quivers". Giovanni Amatuccio wrote a rport i once read on the i-net about Saracen Archers in southern italy, he writes that they were used but never really engaged into battle and were mostly untrained peasants, very easy to muster. The english sources of Busk and Milman are credible, and i think it would be good to keep that info on the site. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Daufer (talkcontribs) 09:28, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, my "credible" stems from the fact that both sources are part of an extensive work and thus had extensive research. Apart from it, as i mentioned before Busk and Milman accounts are similar to other accounts. Since one can only rely on contemporary sources, there are no "Big Steps" from 1855 to 2011 and i trust Busk and Milman more on research than a web-page that doesnt state sources and claims a battle scene between Siena and Florence is a scene from Cortenuova. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Daufer (talkcontribs) 10:51, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your starting to make little sense now. I have read yet a third credible source from 1833, German Franz Georg freiherr von kausler, he also writes of the 10.000 Saracens and that both armies were even and did not exceed 20.000. Again, i repeat, the 10000 Saracens were archers, as given by the contemporary Pietro della Vigna and an expert on Medieval Military Giovanni Amatuccio said they were easy to muster, untrained peasants: read for yourself http://www.deremilitari.org/resources/articles/saracen_archers.htm. I am more convinced than ever that those sources need to be inncluding in the site. As for your new doubts, about the Banner of the Lombard league maybe you should take a look at the painting above. Unlike your web-page source this is truly a scene from Cortenuova.--Daufer — Preceding unsigned comment added by Daufer (talkcontribs) 12:53, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I already apologize for the signature, because it will propably go wrong again but i will try. Apart from that, yes the source is a web-page but its Strictly refferenced and sourced and has a name, Giovanni Amatuccio all that is lacking by your web-page. Those are not "my" sources, those are sources about the battle of Cortenuova, and all seem to agree with eachother. Why do the sources not mention other types of Sicilian troops, as Pietro della Vigna stated "emptying their quivers", they were all Archers. You ask me if i think sources 180 years old are credible, you do know that the battle took place over 800 years ago??? Do you also think that Mommsen is not credible??? Its all about research, whether 100 years ago or yesterday. These Numbers must be included whether from Amatuccio, von Kusler,Busk or Milman or many others, they belong in the site. You cannot only rely on your source the web-page which has no written identity, no Sources given and false imagery. --Daufer (talk) 13:37, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Listen, i dont know what your problem is with german or english historic literature of the 19th Century, but thats your problem. Your disgraceful web-page, anonamys-no sources given-false imagery is ridiculous. You are also in the 3RR rule or not? Civitate is mentioned in the Annale Placentini Gibellini medieval amnuscript. so accuse them of being ignorant.--Daufer (talk) 12:45, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Listen, i want to make 1 thing clear, i am not interrested in an edit war any of such nonsnse, i am just interested in a good article. Now if you think that a dublication of your nonsnse web page is a good idea instead of well sourced article. your mistaken. why dont you help removing the few typos and call it?? --Daufer (talk) 12:52, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The italiana is not the gospel, for you it might be the highest authority, But its not. Have you ever read Hadank? maybe you should do the some research.--Daufer (talk) 13:00, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"I've posted our situation to some experienced users." I want wikipedia. Whos the referree? your friends? You do know that a ref needs to be neutral. "I spent a big deal of my time (instead of working) to bring the article to a decent status." You Liar, this page was disgraceful stub and looked worse just a week ago, then you discover your ridiculous web-page and dublicated it. big deal of time, nonsense. Very carefully studied article, you mean your anonymus web-page the one with no sources, Dont be daft. --Daufer (talk) 13:09, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Edited

Spelling issue: "Shahr-e Ray" (with an "a") is generally the more common spelling - and "Rey" with an "e" the less common spelling -- see spelling at Iranian Chamber: http://www.iranchamber.com/cities/ray/shahre_ray.php http://www.university-directory.eu/Iran/Islamic-Azad-University--Shahr-e-Ray.html http://www.irantalent.com/home/Distribution-Supervisor-jobs-in-Tehran-Iran-3339.html

It appears you reversed the spellings on this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rey,_Iran

Not a major point - I didn't change it back; but wanted to call it to your attention. Thanks for your attention and cheers.

Canosa di Puglia: 8 May 2010

Could you please explain why again you removed the galleries on the Canosa di Puglia page. You failed to adequately explain the policy by stating in your notes that is was not in Commons. I suspect you didn't check as they clearly are in Wikipedia Commons. Would you please describe in better detail the idea of deleting such galleries completely. I can understand reformatting the galleries and placing the pictures elsewhere, but the deletions would indicate that this is a point of view as you fail to substantiate their deletion.

Prince Belmonte: 12 April 2010

On 20th March 2010 you removed a great deal of content from the above article, with no justifications for the edits. I revised the changes so that any who have an interest in Southern Italy prior to the unification of Italy could continue to access the information on this set of individuals who had importance in that era.

I see that on 12th April you have repeated the wholesale deletions, this time with comments: viz Finishing purging out excess of araldic (useless) detail)/rv totally unrelevant, overdetailed noble-stuff/...Purged of serfish attributions.

Your edit comments such as 'araldic (useless) detail' and 'serfish attributions' indicate a personal view which is revisionist, to say the least. Italy in the south functioned as a feudal aristocracy for hundreds of years: the Belmonte article does not claim that was a good or bad thing- but to delete the facts is not going to remove the history, and a 'serfish attribution'- an opinion- is in other words 'the power of the feudal aristocracy'- a fact. My question to you as an editor is whether you can really be sure this article with its full material is not of interest to others? Is it not a legitimate matter for such 'araldic' material to be available in an article on a relevant subject for those who ARE interested in the topic? [By 'araldic' I take you to mean 'heraldic'.]

For brevity, I am going to pick three items which you deleted which would appear to be of interest to a student of southern Italy's history, as examples of many others:

1. 'General Commander of the Austrian Army at the Battle of Bitonto, during the War of Polish Succession.' The entry on this individual was totally destroyed by your edit. Was he really so irrelevant to the country/region's history?

2. Here is a reference which would have helped guide any person with an interest in the topic to original source material, again deleted, with no decent justification: 'Secretarías Provinciales, Libro 152, folios 90 vº y ss, Departamento de Referencias, Archivo General de Simancas (Valladolid)'

3. Would it not be of interest to see the military connection between the control and resourcing of two castles in Puglia (Copertino and Galatone) and a fortress against Saracen invasion at Belmonte? How can a reader capture this after your deletions?

I understand that you are an active editor on Wikipedia. But, given your expertise, do you really see a justification for the wholesale destruction of content, including footnotes which provide guidance to original materials? You have the skill to refine and improve material, but wholesale deletions based on an apparent dislike for topics relating to the history of southern Italy appear to show a serious lack of objectivity.

I am not going to continue to defend this article, re-posting large parts of an article that you have deleted twice wholesale, including what appears to be a significant amount of research by others into original materials. But I am registering disappointment that an article which I enjoyed learning from has been rendered to a skeleton of its former self- and is now, frankly, pointless.

PS Where are the photographs now of the castles held by this family historically? Are you really maintaining by deleting them that this material is not of interest in enriching an article and making it more informative/interesting to a reader? Extraordinary.

History of Islam in southern Italy

Several years ago you started a page on the above topic. On 27th June 2007 you added the section History of Islam in southern Italy#Independent emirate of Sicily (965–1091), ending it in the middle of a sentence (guess you were tired). Despite extensive edit wars on the article, that sentence has never been completed...is this a record? Any chance you could finish the section off properly? I've been working my way through some suspected copyright issue articles and came across Primavera (painting) which you created back in October 2005. This article appears to have been primarily a copy/paste from www.wga.hu which looks like a copyright violation as they clearly state "© Web Gallery of Art", however in looking at your other contributions around that time I see, for example, File:Madonna Masaccio.jpg for which you state "Permission by www.wga.hu". I am wondering if you had explicit permission to place their text onto Wikipedia also and if that permission was ever communicated to the Wikimedia foundation (through OTRS or whatever system they may have had in place back then). Is anything ringing a bell? VernoWhitney (talk) 03:48, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. It had skipped my mind to actually look through your old talk pages before asking you about the situation. I'll try and follow up with those who had previously talked to you about the copyright status of those articles and see what they figured out. Thanks again! VernoWhitney (talk) 13:08, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Would you happen to still have the email or whatever other communication you had from www.wga.hu granting you permission to use their material? VernoWhitney (talk) 13:49, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Attilios. This message is being sent to inform you that there currently is a discussion at Contributor copyright investigations concerning your contributions in relation to Wikipedia's copyrights policy. The listing can be found here. For some suggestions on responding, please see Responding to a CCI case. Thank you. --VernoWhitney (talk) 15:06, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry if I upset you, that was not my intent. I am not opening a copyright violation against you, I am opening an investigation into those articles you created 5 years ago. I am aware that any copyright situation was unintentional, but there is still copyrighted material present in some of the articles you created, and unless we have usable permission from the copyright holders it needs to be removed. VernoWhitney (talk) 20:16, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. As an admin who works copyright problems, I just wanted to second what VernoWhitney has said here. This investigation is not meant to malign you or to devalue your contributions to the project over the past five years. It's just that when this content was placed, we didn't have really good processes in place for handling these kinds of copyright concerns, and if this material has been copied without a legally usable permission (even if they had all good intentions), we can't have it. We currently have a copyright investigation opened on a professional author because his publisher wouldn't let him reuse his own words. Wikipedia is a very prominent website, and we just have to be sure that we handle copyright matters in accord with the US laws that govern us to avoid getting into trouble. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 21:18, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your contributions. Please remember to mark your edits as "minor" only if they truly are minor edits. In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes, or rearrangement of text without modification of content.

Sconfortante.--151.21.249.158 (talk) 18:41, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Image galleries

Hi! I see you've done a lot of work improving articles, especially those related to Italy and Italian culture, where your knowledge is especially valuable. However, I'd appreciate it if you'd read and respond to my points at Talk:Achiam before continuing to insist that the article's image "gallery" must be deleted.

In addition, please be more thoughtful in composing your edit summaries. Summaries such as...

  • The previous article was clearly written by an ignorant of architectural history
  • rv stupid advices in the external links... This is an ENCYCLOPEDIA!!!!
  • reverted to section pre-messy additions by semilliterate

...are uncalled for (though they do provide some unintentional—I assume—comic relief when read as a group). Also, what does sthg, seen in many of your summaries, mean? EEng (talk) 21:10, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why the removal of the convert tag? It makes the data approachable for both users of international units and those of other system. Ciao, I would value your opinion here Talk:Ca' Foscari Palace - the page name irritates me just to look at it, to me it seems like moving the White House to White House Palace. The page needs a lot of copyediting etc too, but I have not touched it, as I assume the editor concerned is in the middle of a large re-write and so it's probably unecessary.  Giano  18:17, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Leghorn

Hi, why are you changing Leghorn to Livorno? DuncanHill (talk) 21:56, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the kind words about my work :) as to Leghorn, redirects are cheap, and the usual English-language name is Leghorn. I'm not going to go about reverting you, but personally I don't see a need for change. DuncanHill (talk) 22:00, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, even if consensus has been reached to use Livorno for the article, I still do not see the need to change all the links. My Oxford Dictionary of the World, OUP, 1995 has Leghorn, and I suspect that many other recentish reference works would still have Leghorn. DuncanHill (talk) 22:06, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I seem to remember somebody saying that "Leghorn" looked horribly outdated. I am not an Englishman or American, but I think, the better and more precise way in such situations is always to get stuck to the name used for the article, in order to grant Wikipedia at least a decent degree of uniformity! Ciao! --'''Attilios''' (talk) 22:10, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
May I just interject here and say that speaking from quite a lot of personal experience with British, Americans and Italians all discussing Livorno that Leghorn is seldom, if ever, referred to. I think also (not that it proves anything) if you google the English speaking "cruise ships sailing to Florence|Rome" you will find they dock at Livorno rather than Leghorn. I think that today Leghorn is very outdated. It certainly is quite different from Firenze and Florence which has a clear and definite nationaly spoken preference.  Giacomo  12:08, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed maintenance templates from Liza Berggren. SS Ernst Brockelmann

I've reverted your edit. If you care to check the sources, they are nearly all imperial units given, which are converted into metric for the convenience of readers who understand metric measurements better than imperial measurements. There may be the odd occasion where a measurement quoted by a source in metric is given as imperial first for consistency. There are many thousands of ship articles which use dual measurements. For modern ships, sources generally give measurements in metric, which are naturally quoted first and converted to imperial. Off the top of my head, MV Danny F II is one of these. History of Tuscany

Hi Attilios, you removed lists of rulers from History of Tuscany today. Any particular reason? I feel that they are useful because they make the article something of a hub or a jumping-off point for Medici and other rulers. AWhiteC (talk) 18:06, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It comes as a bit a surprise that Wikipedia discourages lists; I see lots of them! Anyway, I see your point that the information is replicated in expanded form to a large extent in Grand Duchy of Tuscany but I thought it was useful to have a summary (including date ranges). Since I put that list stuff in initially, I tend to have a sentimental attachment to it. AWhiteC (talk) 09:52, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Semi-literate" isn't a term that should feature in edit summaries (especially when, as here, it isn't justified: the writing was a bit clumsy, but the original editor appears to be a non-native speaker of English, as in fact you are). Nor should "stupid", which you seem to like using a lot. It certainly doesn't help the project in the slightest for you to slag off other editors in this way, so perhaps you'd stop. I see from various messages further up the page that you've been told this before. HeartofaDog (talk) 01:07, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to be borderline edit warring over the infobox at this article. You haven't quite hit WP:3RR yet, but all the same, it's a little concerning. I did see that you broached the subject on the other user's talk page, which is good, but I might suggest you voluntarily cease reverting until there's been more discussion on the matter to determine consensus. Even if you're right, a series of reversions of each other doesn't help the article, and often it tends to cause the opposing sides to dig in, escalating the conflict. Perhaps you could request comments from editors belonging to the arts WikiProject? Shimeru (talk) 07:51, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, good. I would point out that the other decided to fire the matter with "fucking" and other insults. Let me know and good work! --Attilios (talk) 07:53, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
(Pasted the above from my talk page for continuity of discussion.) Maybe so, but insults don't justify edit warring. It's tempting to get into a more combative state of mind after you see something you take as a provocation, but that's usually counterproductive for a project like this. Shimeru (talk) 08:02, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The infoboxes are not required and clearly several other editors who have worked very long and hard on those articles have determined that they are unnecessary there. Please respect that decision. Thank you...Modernist (talk) 10:07, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Attilios: You have deleted the excerpt of the inscription on the border of the basin, which is relevant for double reason: for being the main inscription in the central element of the court, the fountain, the "main character of the court", and for being a poem composed specifically for that location, which subject is a poetic description of the court itself, and of the fountain. I don´t see a reason for the deletion. Please, check it and respond. Thanks. Garcilaso (talk) 23:05, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

State designations for US cities; incivility

Please stop removing state designations accompanying names of US cities, as you did here [2] and many other places. Style guidelines call for state names to accompany US city names, because many US cities share the same name e.g. Portland, Oregon and Portland, Maine:

  • WP#Place_namesWP:PN#Place_names: "In general, refer to places by the names which are used for the articles on those places, according to the rules described at [WP:PLACE]"
  • WP:PLACE#United_States: "The standard form for municipalities and unincorporated communities in the United States is Placename, State"

Please review the guidelines I've cited and either explain why your edits are an exception, or restore the state designations you have removed. If you feel postal abbreviations such as CA are opaque you should expand them to full names, not remove them. The exception is certain cities (listed at [3], such as San Francisco) too well known to require further qualification.

In addition, I again ask you again to moderate the tone of your edit summaries, which continue to insult your fellow editors. Further to the examples brought to your attention earlier [4], you have in recent weeks submitted such summaries as:

  • rv stupid American acronyms which are not understandable for non US-readers
  • rv stupid tourist informations
  • Purged all the genealogici illiterate crap
  • updated and corr. crap English
  • rv crap stuff, other format revision
  • rv stupid repetition of Firenze, Florence
  • This article is useless
  • Only an Anglophone could make so many Italian errors!!!
  • Rv typical errors from the ones who don't speak Italian
  • rv stupid Anglophone incapability to write Italian words
  • Some typical error of Anglophones when they try to write ITalian names (I wonder: are they really so difficult to copy?
  • The level of the one who created this article was proportional to the brain of the same

Your favorite insult seems to be stupid, but your evaluations of others' writing as "crap English" and "illiteracy" are particularly startling given that your own command of English falls far short of your self-awarded evaluation of en-3 (Advanced) [5]. Both your edit summaries and article text display frequent grammatical and spelling blunders, plus the occasional malapropism, and are at times unintelligible e.g. dried and purged of illiteracy.

It might also be mentioned that you don't seem to know the difference between rv and rm in edit summaries [6], which I suspect comes from spending too little time reading the contributions of other editors to learn how things are done and not done. Your contributions are valuable, but your arrogance is unacceptable. This has been called to your attention before, and not just by me [7]. This is the last time I'll be warning you about this before raising the matter formally with other editors.

Your editing habits first came to my attention via certain edits [8] by which you made part of the article's lead meaningless and unaccountably placed Harvard University in England. I suggest you slow down, read more and disparage less, and direct you edit summaries to content, not your superior opinions of other editors.

Finally, it's rude to fail to acknowledge thoughtful comments and criticism. Please reply here (not on my talk page) so that others can follow the conversation.

EEng (talk) 02:50, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but according to me, in the direction of standardization, the fact that only US (sometimes UK) states are mentioned, while for foreign countries no, is a bias. I think any country should have the same dignity. Notice that I revert that just in twin towns lists. I always leave the US city name-state format hidden in the link, while the city name alone is mentioned. So if you click you are immediately send to the correct city. Where is the problem?

As for incivility, I apologize, but sometimes I am really tired of the dumbness and lack of culture I notice here! What can I do? What will you do if you're working here and find 10000 times written "Porland" instead of "Portland"? Or the humiliating silliness of fans writing articles about singers and similar? I really seem 90% people has never read a true encyclopedia in their life! But you're true. I will stop and stay silent for the sake of philanthropy. Ciao, thanks and good work!!

'''Attilios''' (talk) 06:24, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

First, I appreciate your commitment to keeping your frustrations more to yourself in future. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, you are in an unusually good position to improve Wikipedia's treatment of Italian culture. You seem to be systematically looking for problems in that area, and are probably one of very few people doing that, so you're going to run into many such problems, and multiple instances of each problem over and over. You just have to accept that, and let each error you correct be a cause for rejoicing -- There's one less error now! -- and a source of pride in your contribution, rather than one more thing to grumble about.

Second, please continue a conversations in the place where it began. If someone leaves a comment on your talk page, respond there. If they comment on an article talk page, respond there. Conversational fragments scattered all around are meaningless.

Now, on the US city-state matter:

Most Wikipedia style guidelines say that "occasional exceptions may apply," but your blanket rejection of particular guidelines as "biased" is not appropriate. If you disagree with MOS you should open a discussion at the appropriate talk pages and gain consensus for change. In the meantime, you need to follow the guidelines, which are the way they are for the reason already explained: the name alone of a US city is ambiguous e.g. there are about 40 communities named Washington alone! [9]

This has nothing to do with dignity. If a similar condition obtains in some other country, and the guidelines don't reflect that, then by all means suggest one be developed for that country. As for standardization, it's good where it helps and bad where it doesn't: forcing everything onto a Procrustean bed in blind pursuit of standardization is irrational.

It is not enough, as you argue, that the link behind the text takes the reader to the right Washington or right Portland -- the name of the US state should be explicit in the text to tell the reader right away which Portland, because to the extent possible text should stand on its own without needing the link to disambiguate it. The link is for readers to learn more about that particular city; the reader should not, to the extent it can be avoided, be required to follow the link simply to understand the identity of the city in the first place. Readers unfamiliar with the state names/abbreviations will need to click on the link anyway, but there's no reason everyone should have to do that: for the majority of readers on English Wikipedia (all US readers, and many in the UK and elsewhere) including state names or abbreviations tells them what they need to know, at little cost.

If you prefer and space permits, you might want to expand state designations to full names; a list is at [10].

Like it or not, as a non-native speaker of English, you need to take extra trouble to understand English-speaking cultural reference points -- not doing this has brought you into unnecessary conflict. I hate to bring this up so soon, but for some reason my mention (above) of the Lowell House article prompted you to revisit it and make two changes that were not appropriate; see wp:MOS:

  • "Do not use U.S.A. or USA, except in a quotation or as part of a proper name (Team USA)."
  • "Use italics when mentioning a word or letter..." (here ALL is not being quoted so much as exhibited as a thing, making italics more appropriate than quote marks)

These style points might not make sense to you as a non-native speaker, illustrating the importance of your understanding the style guidelines as well as possible. I urge you to review these especially:

  • wp:MOS
  • wp:ENGLISH
  • wp:PLACE
  • wp:UE and especially...
  • wp:MOSPN (Proper names "are frequently a source of conflict between editors from different backgrounds, especially in cases where different cultures, using different names, 'claim' someone or something as their own. Wikipedia does not seek to judge such rival claims, but as a general rule uses the name which is likely to be most familiar to readers of English...This is an English-language encyclopedia, so established English names are preferred...")

Finally, "Fans writing articles about singers and similar" does not "humiliate" you, though you might think they don't improve the project. I don't like such articles either but I don't think it's important enough to me for me to spend time on. You may feel differently, and you ask "What can I do?" -- to which the answer is: as with the city-state matter, you can work to change notability rules by opening discussion at appropriate places. But first you need to read and understand the discussion that came before -- to jump in with "This is all crap!" without knowing how things got to where they are at the moment (rightly or wrongly) will get you absolutely nowhere.

I would not have taken the time to write the above if I did not think your contributions have special value, so please take them in the spirit in which they are offered. Good luck. And leave those state names alone, please.

I reverted your removal of the image of Baltasar Gracián. The reason you gave for removing it was that the caption was written in Spanish (Castilian). The man's name is Baltasar Gracián, he was Spanish, how do you expect it to be written? Baltasar Gracián is his name. –– Jezhotwells (talk) 16:20, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

G'day!

Do you mind very much if I change the pics? The more horizontal pics you use, rather than verticals, the more you can fit in. There are same great ones which ought to be included. Amandajm (talk) 11:32, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re images and Commons: I see Commons as a picture archive, there for using by students, researchers and writers. You general reader doesn't go there. It's usefulness is to people who are already in the know. The captions often leave much to be desired, the pics aren't sequentially arranged. When one uses an image in a picture, it has to "tell the story". The pics that I selected for the body of the article are the "bigger picture" so to speak. One really wants to see the interior of the church, and the interior of the chapter house. These pics don't fit into a gallery well, because they are detailed. However, the pics that I put down in the gallery, are all "details" already. A gallery needs to add real value, and it's about the captions. I do wish that the exterior view that shows so much information- the shape of the church, the cloister, the dome, the portal and so on, was a really good photo instead of a grainy shot that doesn't enlarge well. But is looks OK at small size in the article. Amandajm (talk) 11:29, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Attilios, I don't think that the cathedrals of England are better than the cathedrals of Spain. But I am better qualified to write about things which I have seen and studied for years. I know about the development of English architecture. I also know a fair bit about Italian architecture. But I don't really have expertise in the development of Catalan architecture. I can see what I can see. Cheers! Amandajm (talk) 10:02, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just took a quick look at Ely Cathedral (the pic). You must admit, that west front must have been really something spectacular befor one side fell down! I went there twelve years ago with my husband, son and sister. It was Harvest Festival and because Ely is in a rural area, the decoration of the cathedral was magnificent. In the remains of the cloister there was a huge pile of fruit and flowers (I mean huge). All between the piers of the nave were stands of local produce: honey, wheat, apples, flowers (a man with a big shiny face had tubs of great shiny begonias each as round as his face). In the centre of the enormously long nave were pens with calves, lambs and I seem to remember a little donkey. All the local school children were there (in uniform) and were petting the animals. We went into the little cafe in the base of the demolished tower and ate something that they called "cathedral pudding" (bread and butter custard, I think it was). We also went into the huge free-standing Lady Chapel (its decoration badly wrecked in the 1600s). Two people came along who were attending a function, and we all got singing hymns in four part harmony as we had a soprano, a contralto, a tenor and a bass. What a lovely morning! Amandajm (talk) 10:18, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's the Lady Chapel which is peeking around the corner of the missing tower. It is a spectacular building with the widest stone vault in England. Amandajm (talk) 10:20, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Byzantine stuff

Hello Attilios! First, thanks for your appreciative comments! I certainly plan to complete and bring the rest of the Isaurian period article to the same level, and then probably do the Amorian period too, for they are perhaps the most under-appreciated periods in the Empire's history. The other periods also need lots of work of course, but it will be some time before I will be able to do anything about that. I've got a couple of dozen ongoing projects or other articles I want to do, so time is short. Any help you can offer will, of course, be appreciated, be it pointing out an unclear sentence or a mistake, or adding some important point you feel I overlooked. Just be bold and edit. Since Byzantium is an area where only a handful of editors are active, IMO, if you can go ahead and write up even a sketchy, rudimentary outline on some of these topics (e.g. the horribly short Byzantium under the Justinian dynasty), you'd be helping a great deal. And if you can bring some respectable Italian sources in, that'd be a further bonus.

For the map, it has some problems, and I have been revising it for some time now, although the present status is still nowhere near good enough for it to be uploaded. For Naples and Gaeta, both cities are usually listed as acknowledging at least nominal Byzantine suzerainty at the time, their rulers accepting Byzantine titles etc. Now I admit that Byzantine Italy is not my field of expertise, so if you have some good sources to show otherwise, I'll change that too. Best regards, Constantine 18:43, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Andrea Anastasi has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced, notability therefore unclear

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I am trying to find a couple of things for Antonia Malatesta of Cesena, AKA Antonia Malatesta of Rimini, wife of Giovanni Maria Visconti, specifically a reliable source for who her father was & picture of her that could legally go into Wikimedia Commons. For instance, an ideal picture would be a color version of the one at "Antonia Malatesta as Saint Mary". Retrieved 26 July 2010. Duomo di Pisa

Hi, I saw you wrote many articles about Italy. I've noticed that the Duomo di Pisa doesn't have an article on its own like in italian, spanish or german and I think it deserves one, and not to be a part of Piazza dei Miracoli. Who do I need to ask to write such an article or discuss the issue ? Thanks.. Tt100 (talk) 00:29, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mi sono casualmente imbattuto nel summenzionato articolo, e devo dire che si tratta della peggior cosa che io abbia mai visto nella mia vita. Columns etc

Polycolumns seems OK. I think the usual English would be "clustered columns". You used the term "blind columns" rather than ""fake columns" so I presumed you meant "blind arcade". Thankspam--a little late

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for fixing the errors on Monte Abantos, the page I created. It wasn't my best translation, and I was tired, and I know nothing of Spain's geography, etc., so I did the best I could with it. Obviously, I made several errors. Thanks again for correcting them! --- cymru lass (hit me up)(background check) 02:44, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tip. I feel a little embarrassed; I'm usually the most anal person on Earth about getting things like this right. Next time I translate an article, I'll be sure to do it on plenty of rest. Thanks a million! --- cymru lass (hit me up)(background check) 13:50, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, You removed the subsection Grog from this article with the argument that it was not required. I would argue that because Vernon's innovation cured scurvy in the navy and started a tradition that lasted over 230 years, it is not only appropriate but essential to the completeness of the article. I want to put it back but I don't want to get in to an editting war with you over it. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks, Corneredmouse (talk) 09:24, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at it again, it does look better. Thanks. I'm afraid I can't find the Albano reference in the article. If you could direct me to it I'd happily find out which one it is for you and disam it properly. Thanks, Corneredmouse (talk) 09:40, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reversion of honours for Umberto II of Itally

You recently reverted the addition that I made to Umberto II of Italy in which I had added a referenced list of his membership of various orders and you provided no explanation for doing so. Such lists are not uncommon in articles on monarchs. I would appreciate an explanation for your removal of the list. Cheers, AusTerrapin (talk) 23:12, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ciao! I removed them as, in my opinion, their encyclopedical value is totally null. To know that boring list of empty noble titles, what does it give to the reader? The article doubles its size, with its knowledge value remaining the same. Anyway, let me know... Good work! --'''Attilios''' (talk) 23:29, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. That is a big assumption. Whilst for some, even many, readers this information will be of little value, for others, it is of significant interest. There is ample precedent on Wikipedia for the inclusion of such information, so I am going to restore it. Cheers, AusTerrapin (talk) 00:27, 19 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Luca_gianni_de_hamlet.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Luca_gianni_de_hamlet.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 01:04, 19 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ruth Rendell - prolific

Hi Attilios,
While I completely agree with the removal of the unsourced and possibly OR pronunciation stuff, I don't think that "prolific" fails NPOV. It is a fact that she has written a lot of books. I would argue, if that failed NPOV, then that J. D. Salinger was reclusive, and that Thomas Pynchon is publicity-shy would by analogy also fail NPOV. Your thoughts on this?

Abrantes

Hello. I just wanted to justify the revert of the Infobox to Geobox formats on the Abrantes Municipality page. I have been in a slow process of updating the Infoboxes to Geoboxes on many of the Portugual-related geography pages because it is better suited to geography-based content then the older infoboxes. The Geobox is an all-around user-friendly, more flexible format that integrates current content, with flexible categories and provides expandability that does not compromise the integrity of the structure. I justify its use in the following reasons: it is based on 'one standard template of code and synatax with multiple comprehensive categories; which covers all the geography-based information; it is flexible, and can be augmented with qualifiers (_size, _type, etc.); integrates preexisting infobox content (i.e.UNESCO World Heritage Infobox); provides easy to use fields, which does not require knowledge of markup, as in some infoboxes (for example, needing to ad "px" to picture sizes); integrates Wikimedia Commons redirects; provides map-specific content, with expanded map definitions; integrates imagery; and includes new geography-based content built-in to the existing structure in a logical order, and not just tagged onto the end as "free". In addition, its aesthetic is more refined and updated then infobox settlement, which integrates with the Wikipedia design. But, as you will note at the Geobox article clearly indicates the intention of the Geobox replacement, which is comprehensive design that in one base template, supports all the pre-existing geography-related infoboxes. When I began editing Wikipedia geography content, I slowly realized that there existed many infoboxes, but only the Geobox schema was flexible enough to be used in many circumstances (physical and human geography) to provide a summary of the content. Finally, I would just note that the revert of the Geobox elminiated a lot of the content that existed there including settlement information, free-cell information, etymology, municipality, political and historical summaries. Ruben JC (Zeorymer) (talk) 10:05, 25 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I read your comments, and agree completely about standardization. But, as I included in my arguments above that, the Geobox is the better form for this means, since it allows the flexibility necessary to include more geographic information. I hope you understand if I continue to advance the use of this form, as I elaborate new content, rather than the infobox. Regardless, I really appreciate your comments on the proper terms, and bolding conventions, I will begin putting those conventions into my edits, starting with the Angústias page.Ruben JC (Zeorymer) (talk) 16:04, 25 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Gaeta Ducal Palace.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Gaeta Ducal Palace.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Santo Sepolcro (Pisa)

I see you originally created this article, so maybe you can sort out what looks like some confusion. The article says that it was created by Diotisalvi, and that the church was known from at least 1113, but the Diotisalvi article says that he worked in the second half of the 12th century, and created the Baptistry (Pisa), which started in 1152. Did he design both? Dudley Miles (talk) 23:53, 20 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. I have now seen that a note to the article says that there is a plaque which says they were designed by the same man, so there is a source after all. It was just the statement you corrected which confused me. The article wrongly says that he designed the cathedral instead of the bapistry, so I have corrected this. Dudley Miles (talk) 19:27, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have also found a picture of the plaque and added it to the note. Dudley Miles (talk) 00:08, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why?

...do you so continually complain about us poor English-speakers? We love and adore your horrible country, its landscape, its towns, its artworks and even, sometimes, its people! Maybe the poor stupid Englishman from the BBC was relying on an interpreter from California. Why does Barbatelli read our encyclopedia in English and send back complaints in Italian? After all, I only comprehend six words of Italian: cappuccino, focaccia, spaghetti, Chianti, grazie and ciao... One does not need any more. If one attempts to use Italian to ask the Florentine waiter for shin of beef with garlic beans and a local red, he looks down his nose and sniggers: "Oh God! The fat English woman and her stupid son have Calabrian accents!" and if one asks the information officer at the railway station what time the train goes to Bologna he says "Who cares?" and goes on talking into his cell phone.... (so why do I expect you to be more polite?) Amandajm (talk) 13:18, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

desktop... I'm sure you're right!

Oh, I miss Italy! But it has changed since I first visited in the 1970s. If you went to a bar and asked for juice, there was a big jug on the counter of whatever fruit was in season, and some glasses on a tray. When I returned in the 1980s there was a fridge full of Coke and Fanta. After that it was downhill all the way. In Milan in the mid 1990s, it was impossible to find a cheap cafe that didn't sprinkle revolting "chicken salt" laced with msg over all the food. I believe that Venetian restauranteurs lost the battle to keep out Colonel Sanders! So sad!
As for the Rugby: one can not help wondering how it is that a little country of about 20 million can field so many excellent sporting teams: Cricket, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Football (which we refer to as Soccer), Baseball, Hockey, Basketball as well as all the home competitions of Australian Rules. The history of Football in Australia is quite interesting as in the mid 20th century the two games that were mainly played were Rugby League in Sydney and Rugby Union in Melbourne, but the post-war migrants all played Football/soccer and established their own teams, each originally made up of people of a particular nationality. In our location, it is still hard for for any kid that isn't Macedonian to get onto a team.

I would like to know how it is reported in the Italian Press. I would also like to know which Italian Art Historians are in support of this attribution, and whether there are any opposing opinions.
I may be wrong, but it seems to me that they are only asking :How can we prove Leonardo did this?. They are not asking: Which artist could have made this painting?

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:San Vendemiano-Stemma.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, we also need to know the terms of the license that the copyright holder has published the file under, usually done by adding a licensing tag. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged files may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the file will be deleted 48 hours after 08:25, 4 December 2010 (UTC). I have noticed you removing/altering the units of measurement in several extinct taxa articles on my watchlist in the last week. While metric is the preferred dominant system, imperial/american are allowed also, so please do not removed them from the articles. IF you must do anything replace bare numbers withe the {{Convert|1|m|ft}} template, which renders the numbers as such 1 metre (3.3 ft). Thanks --Kevmin § 14:20, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as File:Monte sant'angelo castle old.jpg is missing a description and/or other details on its image description page. If possible, please add this information. This will help other editors to make better use of the image, and it will be more informative for readers.

If the information is not provided, the image may eventually be proposed for deletion, a situation which is not desirable, and which can easily be avoided.

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a search with the contents of La Mata de Morella, and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: Cinctorres. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. CorenSearchBot (talk) 14:14, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Marianus I of Arborea has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A search for references found no published (gBooks) support for this article, fails WP:V and WP:N

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Image source problem with File:Taranto location.png

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Taranto location.png.

This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 00:31, 3 January 2011 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Magog the Ogre (talk) 00:31, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:MA Colonna.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:MA Colonna.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

Fair use rationale for File:MSI logo.gif

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:MSI logo.gif.

Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.. You claimed rights to this image because you scanned it. Scanning something, anything, doesn't transfer copyrights on that thing to you. Please refrain from doing this in the future. Thank you, Hammersoft (talk) 19:41, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:MSI logo.gif

Thank you for uploading File:MSI logo.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Hammersoft (talk) 14:24, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Re this edit of yours: Scanning something that is copyrighted does not transfer the copyrights of that item to you. If that were the case, you could take any logo in the world, scan it, and voila! It's yours! The logo is the property of the entity that created it. Even though it is old, it is not old enough to automatically be free of copyright by way of age. As such, we must treat this logo as non-free, and it must adhere to all aspects of WP:NFCC. In this case, the image is currently violating WP:NFCC #10c, which requires a separate, specific fair use rationale for each use of the item. For instructions on how to go about creating a rationale, please see WP:FURG. Continuing to remove warning tags on the image without remedying the problem can and will lead to a block of your editing privileges. If you have questions, ask. Spelling corrections and {{sic}}

The {{sic}} template is used to indicate that a misspelling or other error is intentional; you should generally not correct spelling errors marked with that template without knowing why the template was applied in the first place. I have reverted your change to ISO 3166-1; {{sic}} is used there because that article reflects the exact naming used by the ISO 3166/MA for each country, even if the name is not commonly considered correct. Aldo Moro kidnapping

Hi

It is a very interesting article, I have found it fascinating to be honest.

I am only half way through however, it is pretty big lol!

I should be finished in about an hour. There is a list of stuff to look at on the talk page which I am still adding to as I go through it. I will put a note here once I have finished :¬) Chaosdruid (talk) 18:37, 12 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

One thing is the "Lago della Duchessa" - I cannot find an English translation of it. I may have been wrong in translating it as "Lake Duchess". I think it could be "Lake of the Duchess", but I can only find [13] Chaosdruid (talk) 19:16, 12 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have finished ! Wow what a lot of information. It seems to me that there were some definite underhand dealings and Moro was not allowed to form a solid government. It would have meant and end to the Maffia and to the corruption that it seems all the politicians and members of the police/security forces were enjoying. It would also have played into the hands of ALL the secret organisations from the CIA to P2. I am surprised there is not any real involvement by the Russian secret services, though I am sure there will be something hidden away in some secret bunker under the Kremlon!
Anyway I hope my edits have not caused any problems and hope that you can progress the article to GA or even FA!
Best wishes :¬) Chaosdruid (talk) 20:27, 12 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

MoS "bibliography etc"

Hi

You retitled the refs sections in the Argentina page [14].

I would be very interested to see where you got that info on the "as per MoS" comment as I spent ages trawling through the various guides to find what the correct headers would be.

I put bibliography as that is what it is, a bibliography lol.

All too often I find people retitling "References" as "Notes" like this:

==Notes==
{{reflist}}
===References===
{{citebook...

In reality notes are a ref with notes about the text being referenced, not just a ref. (ref. 135 would be a note rather than a simple ref.). A bibliogrpahy is a list of books that were used in writing something such as an article or paper, so calling the book section "sources" seems a little strange.

I am not saying you have got it wrong, or there is anything wrong with how you are doing this, nut rahter ahta I wish to look at the MoS and try and sort out why it is advising people to do it like this :¬)

Did you get anywhere with the Aldo Moro kidnapping article btw?

Santa Maria in Trastevere

The problem with the architecture categories is that they are basically rather ambiguous as to what should be included. One point with categories is that articles should be added if this feature is significant and defining. A single sentence does not make this point very clear. I and other editors have been moving much of the content in the architecture categories to the building and structures completed tree. While this is not perfect either, at least it identifies why a building is notable in a specific year. In doing this I'm finding that maybe 1 or 2% of the articles really don't seem to fit anywhere. This article was one of them. Enjoy. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:04, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image File:Benna-Stemma.png

⚠
Thanks for uploading File:Benna-Stemma.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Adria

Hello. in November 2010, you wrote in the Adria-article, that "in 589, and Adria became a fief of the bishopric of Ravenna." As there is no page of this bishopric, I changed it into the archdiocese of Ravenna. However, if you did mean the Exarchate of Ravenna, please feel free to correct me. Dear Attilios,

It seems you may have wrongly undid a revision on the Bull shark article. It was only after I placed the vandalism banner that I realized you are an active WP user. From there, I supposed it was a minor error, which is why I am removing the vandal template I added.

Sincerely,

File permission problem with File:Gualdo Tadino-Stemma.gif

Thanks for uploading File:Gualdo Tadino-Stemma.gif. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Diannaa (Talk) 23:19, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Alberto Cova winning 83.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Alberto Cova winning 83.jpg.

Thank you. ΔT The only constant 02:30, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Attilios!

I will take a look at the Sistine Chapel ceiling problems. I thing it is great to have some separate articles about those other major frescoes.

Tell me about Baby Stefanino? I have a new grandson, born yesterday!

Cheers, Amandajm (talk) 00:04, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good luck with your education program! My youngest son likes art and playstations.
I am waiting on more news and pictures of the baby. He is my third grandchild. The eldest is 14 already, and a girl of 4.
Re Sistine Chapel Ceiling, you edits are a little bit heavy handed... the sentence about Michelangelo being Ghirlandaip's greatest pupil, states that he was Ghirlandaio's pupil. That fact is important and is now left out. So I will put it back in some form.
Also, the quotatio that was with the picture of the ignudi was said by the pope, and is written in the text. If you read the text, you would have found where the quote was from. I'll fix that to make it clear.
Someone else made some alterations, some time ago, without much understanding of the flow of the article, and moved things around. I'll fix some of those as well.
Now I will do the rounds of my watched pages. I do get so sick of the vandalism, and people being so argumentative!
Amandajm (talk) 09:50, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Poor Man's Bible

I agree that this article needs a cleanup! I wrote it when I first started out. I think it might be my first complete article.

But you are being a bit too heavy handed. When you remove POV, you must rephrase the sentence to retain the information that it contains.

Also: The list of pairings of Old and New Testament subjects that you stated was irrelevant, related directly to the stained glass window that was reproduced beside the information. The pairing itself is significant, because these are the cross-references that are nearly always' used in a "Poor Man's Bible' of any sort, including the Arena Chapel frescoes. Also, at San Zaccharia, one great painting (the Bellini) doesn't usually make a "poor man's Bible (unless it is like the Ghent Altarpiece, in many parts). The point is that there are, within that church, a vast number of large oil paintings which together tell the story. It is one of the largest collections of such paintings in any church, outdoing Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in number, if not in quality!. (Frari is one of my favourite churches in the whole world)

Also, did you notice that the "gallery" was not an arbitrary collection of images. I suspect that you did not look very carefully before you removed it! Amandajm (talk) 11:18, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you have been back to that article, you will notice that I removed a few more POV adjectives that I found. It did need some work!
About the gallery, I don't mind about not reinstating it, but I think it is a pity not to include the particular artworks that are described, so I think that I will do that instead.
The reason for this is because there is no single wiki commons site where they can be viewed. If your article is about Chartres Cathedral for example, you can put up a box informing the reader that there is pictorial material related to that article, specifically. But in this case, because the subject is so broad, it is not possible. I think that the Isenheim altarpiece and the Ghent Altarpiece both ought to be illustrated.
Another point: If you read the alt captions that I write, they are very much more descriptive and more likely to contain words like "huge", "tiny", "magnificent", "delicate" etc, because they are written for blind people. I have heard it argued that it is pointless to include colours because blind people can't see them, but on the contrary, the majority of blind people have previously been sighted, and can visualise the difference between something that is red, blue, grey or yellow etc, and the different atmosphere that this would give to a scene or artwork. The aim with alt texts is to provide a verbal image to the listener. It doesn't matter if the man in a photo is facing right or left, and has dark hair and a grey suit. What matters is that he is a tired-looking young man in his twenties in shabby 19th century clothing. Because I have worked with blind people on a number of levels, including devising cultural tours for them, I am quite adamant about my descriptive approach.
So if you find such descriptive language within an alt caption, please just leave it there. It has been very carefully thought out.
Thank you very much for all the painting links and so on!
I am still waiting to know my grandson's name!
Oh, incidentally, I did say that the gallery was not arbitrary: It follows the sequence of the "Life of Christ.
Amandajm (talk) 10:18, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I just replied on my page! Amandajm (talk) 11:06, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I love it when the All Blacks do the haka. The Aussies stand there and pick their noses or adjust their you-know-whats. They played a team from the Solomons who were great big frizzy-headed blokes that would scare the shite out of anyone, particularly when they came at their opponents with enormous war spears, banging on shields! Oh how I wish that my dad was alive! He loved the Solomon Islands!
There is no way that any grandson of mine will turn out a rugby player. My eldest son was a tiny skinny little teenager, only as big as an 11-yr-old. So he was made the linesman for the senior Rugby League team. It was really quite entertaining when all the huge Year 12 lumbered out to collect their trophies and this child who looked like a little blonde fairy went out with them to hoots and cheers from his classmates. His bedroom wall was covered with sports pennants. Amandajm (talk) 12:50, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Giotto

We are tearing into Giotto now, are we? I will just let you know that the "exceedingly large weaselly word" was not mine. I happen to know that Duccio's Madonna is quite a lot bigger. That room in the (I'm too tired to even think about whether it's two fs and one zed or one ef and two zeds....that gallery place beginning with YOU).

It's Mother's Day here. I am so tired I'm sitting here yawning. toodle-oo! Amandajm (talk) 13:28, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So, once up tomorrow, give (if you want as usual) a check to my recent Giotto and Cimabue additions if you've time (restored the galleries if you want, as usual). I found an Ognissanti Madonna article that the unexperienced creator missed to link or categorize, and was full of POV or stuff regarding Giotto in general, which I removed. Let me know and nice dreams. --'''Attilios''' (talk) 14:00, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Don't compline to me! My Inglesh speeling is dredfull! I carnt critisize enyboddy. My ecxcuse is that I am deslyxic. Is it Ufizzi or Uffizi? Assisi or Asissi? Rennaisance or Renassaince? Carravagio or Caravaggio? Massacio or Masaccio? And as for those Polly-wolly-doodle brothers, they trip me up every time! Are you in London? I saw a chap who looks like you at the airport. I was about to run over and hug him, but then I thought that if it wasnt you, maybe he would think either I was mad, or that I trying to pick his pocket. Ciao

Hi Attilios. You might remember me as the guy you had a fight with over infoboxes on van der Weyden articles a while ago. I came across you since through user:Thoughtfortheday, whom I think we both get on with, and ended up reading a few of your articles, espically on churches, and was very impressed. I see you around a fair bit and as we have shared interests, i would prefer put things like before behind us and be friends rather than that foe. Any problem with that? There are not a lot of us working on visual arts and there is a lot to do; I would certainly like to have you as a person I could for eg, helping me with translations of it.wiki articles on 15th c painting. The Spanish wiki is v strong on VA, esp Goya and Velázquez, and I'm guessing you speak good Spanish, and it would be great for me to have that access. I can help you with copyediting, finding sources, libary access, and on, and whatever. Ceoil 20:09, 14 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I had a look at your 'to do' page. Ah, I can I'm going to be exposed to a lot of new things from working with you. Ceoil 20:29, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Futurism edits

I have reverted several of your edits in articles about Futurism, mainly to the spelling of the name Fillìa. Previously, it was incorrectly accented as Fillià or not accented at all. My corrections were checked against a copy of La Cucina Futurista. I have made a few other reversions, which I hope you don't mind. Buona giornata. Marshall46 (talk) 08:59, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Attilios. I was careful about the accent, taking it from the above Italian language source. Thanks for the explanation of the use of this accent in Italian. Could it be that it was an eccentricity of Fillìa in creating his Futurist name? Non lo so. Marshall46 (talk)

License tagging for File:Pds symbol.gif

Thanks for uploading File:Pds symbol.gif. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. The image was in fact in use, but for some reason the link wasn't recorded in the database (e.g., it didn't show up in "What links here"). I fixed the problem by making a null edit on the article (null edit = edit page and save without any changes - doesn't show up in the edit history, but causes the link data to be recomputed). --Zundark (talk) 13:03, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Arrogance and edit summaries

Yesterday, you seem to have gone on a spree pursuing my edits, here is just one [15][16][17] I cannot be bothered to list them all, but furthermore moving pages and leaving patronising summaries is unaceptable. For a long time owm I have ignored you and your small hornet-like edits here and there; if you wish to follow me picking up my numerous typos, then you are welcome to do so, but please do not leave insulting summaries because, quite frankly: you are not in a position to do so. If you wish to be the only editor hear comenting on Italain matters, then you are going to be sadly dissapointed and have a very long wait indeed. Happy editing! Giacomo Returned 07:02, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your reversion of one of my facts here [18]. I doubt it is a wonderful reconstruction, but there is a building here claiming to be the rebuilt facade of the demolished palazzo - it certainly looks like it was rebuilt [19]. Giacomo Returned 09:31, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really understand why you removed the image from the article. The article spend quite a few words discussing the vegetation of the region (which plays an important part on the book and is part of the title in portuguese). Maybe my caption is not accurate: not only the park was created as a tribute to the book, but a large part of the plot happens there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vitor 1234 (talkcontribs) 09:15, 11 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your edits of Borgo (rione of Rome)

Hallo Attilios

I reverted all your NPOV edits of the article about Borgo, which I wrote about two years ago. A couple were - according to me - ok, many others unfortunately not, while others are pure vandalism. At the moment I am abroad, so i have no time to discuss them. When I come back, we can discuss them. In the meantime, please don`t touch the article. Cheers, Alex2006 (talk) 09:34, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

These belong to the edits that were ok. Others were not. So, please leave my version and we will discuss it when I come back, ok? thanks, Alex2006 (talk) 09:44, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We will discuss it when I go back home. The article has been reviewed by a fellow englishman, but de gustibus non disputandum est :-) . Thanks for your patience, cheers Alex2006 (talk) 09:48, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wrong. "The most beautiful" can be understood as POV. Saint Peter as postcard is not my idea, but it comes from people as Insolera, Benevolo, Vannelli, and so on. As you surely know, they are among the most important italian city planners which dealt with this subject in the last fifty years) . I will bring you the references, of course. I did not cite this sentence, just because everyone which has two eyes can see it. :-) Anyway, on wikipedia, if you want reference about a sentence, usually you use the missing citation template, and don`t cancel the sentence.

Now I will try to explain you why I wrote this article:

1) I am Roman, and baptised in Saint Peter; :-)

2) My mother was born in this rione,baptised in a church which was demolished in 1930, and lived there until 1933;

3) Because of 2) I started to be interested in the history of Borgo since 1975. In the meantime, I collected (and read) all the books and publications about this subject which I could find during these years. I never counted them, but they are many. Due to that, I acquired some knowledge about the subject. :-) After these premises, you are most welcome to open a discussion about this subject. Until that, please don`t touch the article. Cheers, Alex2006 (talk) 17:46, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Salutoni, Alex2006 (talk) 13:02, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Splitting Italian categories

I'm afraid I have to say I don't think this is a very good idea, unless the category is really large - over 400 articles say. Few foreigners have a really clear idea of where the boundaries of the regions are, & to very many English-speakers they mean nothing at all. The French categories, on Commons and sometimes here, are virtually unusable because they are so specific, split by department. The same with many German ones - the US ones are at least usually too large to leave unsplit. Unless you know exactly where what you are looking for is located, it makes searching very time-consuming. UK categories of this type are mostly only split as a last resort, which I think is the right approach. Johnbod (talk) 17:52, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

pantheon

Concerning your edits of the Santa Cueva de Covadonga, the use of "panteon real" or "royal pantheon" is correct. It is a building serving as the burial place of or containing memorials to the famous dead of a nation (according to webster at least). A good example is the one in Paris. Several royal pantheons are scattered accross Spain: covadonga, leon, escorial, abamia, Poblet monastery,... The more famous is the one in the Escorial: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Escorial#Pantheon_of_the_Kings. It is true that the Italians buried king Vittorio Emmanuele in the Roman Pantheon instead of the "Typewriter" complicating everything. ;-))--Alberto Fernandez Fernandez (talk) 12:24, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Metric measurements

I'll do exactly as you say. My books use both, so I have copied them as I found them. That means that all the measurements that came from Sir Banister's beautifully drawn plans are in pounds shillings and pence, whereas the measurements from Boardman are all in metric.

I ran the automatic conversion template over some and it didn't want to work nicely, because or the format (33 x 110 meters) etc. It is very clumsy to have the measurement in feet jammed in behind the metres, so I'll just have to calculate every sing one individually. It was too late to do it last night. BTW, I prefer metres to meters so I'll use that form and if I miss any, our eagle eye will no doubt spot them.

Guess what?

Alessandro Vezzosi, of the Leonardo museum in Vinci has finally made a statement that he has ruled out the chance of that Lucan portrait being by Leonardo's hand. Great! I found it on Discovery Channel, but he is going to publish a book about the faces of Leonardo. Then we will reference the book instead. He must have been under a lot of pressure over this! Amandajm (talk) 17:05, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You have missed the point! He has finally announced that he is of the opinion that it is NOT by Leonardo. ....The painting isn't in Vezzosi's museum. He has a nice little museum with lots of really excellent models of Leonardo's more practical inventions.
I think he has written this book because he was quoted saying about four different things to the press, and then either changed his mind or they got it wrong.
  • He was quoted by the Times as saying he thought it was by Cristofano dell'Altissimo.
I quoted that in the article and got a message back saying that they got it wrong. Vezzosi did not say it was possibly by dell'Altissimo.
  • He was then quoted as saying that he had ruled out that it was by Leonardo.
He made a subsequent statement that the paper had misquoted him and that e had not ruled out that it was by Leonardo.
  • Now Discovery Channel has published that he has finally made his mind up: It is not by Leonardo.
Which is what we have been saying all along! Amandajm (talk) 01:42, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"Ruled out", Well, I' not quite sure whether it means that someone deleted the idea by "ruling a line through it", (on the written page), or whether its comes from the sporting field where an action in the play or a player is deemed "out" by the rules. Amandajm (talk) 08:11, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Colloquial language can be difficult. I once went to pay my gas bill and the German migrant who was ahead of me in the queue, was having a problem. He asked why he had been sent a letter informing him that the amount of the bill was unpaid, although he said he had paid it through the mail. The woman at the counter said "Yer check bounced! It's in the red!"

The man said "I beg your pardon? Please explain why I have been sent this disconnection notice!" She said "I told yer all ready! Yer check bounced!" I said "Excuse me Sir, when the gas company presented your cheque, there were insufficient funds in your account for the bank to honour it." The woman said, very frustrated : "That's wot I all ready told im! 'Is check bounced!" Amandajm (talk) 08:26, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your edits of 3rd July on this page consisting of deletions of 2 whole sections are bordering on vandalism. Official style & Ancestry are necessary sections as matters of record in any article on royalty, regardless of whether you think the ancestry notable or otherwise. The sections have been re-instated. Please tone down your editing style. (Lobsterthermidor (talk) 11:15, 3 July 2011 (UTC))[reply]

Sorry about the formality in the templated comment - it comes from Twinkle, I think. Anyway, I found that someone uploaded a free-use version of the same crest that they had created, so I swapped the two over in the articles where the old one was still being used. Thus I've nominated the old one to be removed, given that it seems to have done its job. :) - Bilby (talk) 12:17, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your answer on my talk page

Dear Attilios,

Being a semi-retired user, I was looking at my talk page and I just read your comment a few instances ago.

Firstly, may I remind you that language such as "we will not miss you" is not the sort which is considered appropriate for Wikipedia, as one can see if one reads one of the five pillars of this encyclopedia. Of course, no one is perfect, and when I did create articles such as the Royal Palace of Milan, it was because at the time I was more concerned with creating as much information as possible rather than writing good quality articles (which, considering that I have got to know Wikipedia better now, I realise was the wrong mindset). However, to say "we will not miss you" is very much against Wikipedia's spirit of inclusion and community, making one feel shunned and snubbed. As well as that, I don't believe that it is completely true, considering what user:Ian Spackman wrote here. On addition, would you say that I haven't made any good contributions? Culture of Italy, Italian fashion, Milan, Rome, Italy, Italian economic miracle, etc. were either improved, significantly edited or created by me. I have to be honest, Italy and all related articles still need much improvement. Looking at the Italy wikiproject, it seems that there are only 16 Feature-class articles and 1 Featured list, contrasted to 39 Feature-class articles and 5 Featured lists with France, or 74 Feature-class articles and 16 Featured lists with Germany. On addition, it seems that there is a lack of new and fresh information on several articles. For instance, the Italy portal has had the same featured picture and featured article since 2005. I am not complaining about the Italy-related articles, but I believe that many of them still need drastic improvement, and rather than criticising and being generally unpleasant to potentially enthusiastic editors, I would try to encourage as many as possible to help. Of course, however, this does not mean that one shouldn't be constructively critical - without criticism, we will never improve. I learned many helpful things from Wikipedia from constructive criticism, not, however, from destructive criticism.

Referring to the translated articles such as Royal Palace of Milan, I apologise to editors in general for thinking wrongly yet in good faith. However, since they do exist, we should possibly try to make them into good quality articles, like I see you did with il Palazzo Reale di Milano.

Yours,

--Theologiae (talk) 12:46, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. Thank you. Let's try to get as many feauture-class Italy articles as possible. Unfortunately, I am very busy, and thus, I am not often available, but, I am willing to help wherever I can.
Yours,

Question

Virgin and Child, in the Santa Maria del Carmine church, Naples

Attilios, as our resident expert on Italian churches, do you have any idea how I might track down a colour reproduction of this fresco. I've searched long and hard and am tearing out whats left of my hair here. Ta. Ceoil 13:48, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look at p 160 here. Am I getting the chruch mixed up. Ceoil 14:04, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Romanesque

Don't you come here with your smily happy summer-day face on and start picking on my inadequacies! It's half-past midnight in the middle of the winter, where I am! This house is freezing. And the other night my beastly son made me sit up to watch the Harry Potter thing in Trafalgar Square from 1.00 am till breakfast. I haven't recovered yet!

I'll do the captions. .....YAAAAWWWWN! .........Tomorrow!

Tooodle-oo! Amandajm (talk) 14:26, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Florence

Dear Attilios,

Noticing that you have made numerous recent edits to this article, I can't help but assent with many of these changes. Florence, looking back upon the article, is messy and prolix. I have written a message on the city's discussion page, and I have suggested a move of some information onto a separate article. I thought you might be interested to have a look, considering it seems that you are interested in the city.

Yours,

Hi! It seems you recently created an unreferenced biography of a living person: Alvise Zorzi. The community has decided that all new biographies of living persons must contain a reliable source that supports at least one statement made about the person in the article as per our verifiability policy. Please add references as soon as possible. Thanks! --LaraBot (talk) 00:10, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
