History

The Portuguese settlers to Mozambique were introduced to pili pili chili by the African mozambiquans who had incorporated it in their cuisine.[1] The term 'pili pili' is Swahili for 'pepper pepper'.[1] The settlers began to use piri piri in their own daily cooking.[1] The restaurant has its origins in a mining town in South Africa, where many Mozambicans of Portuguese origins relocated to Johannesburg in search of gold and carried piri piri recipes to South Africa.[1] Industries catering to the mining communities began to grow in Rosettenville, including "Chickenland". The restaurant began in 1987 when Portuguese-Mozambiquans Robert Brozin and Fernando Duarte bought a restaurant called Chickenland in Rosettenville, southern Johannesburg in South Africa.[3] They renamed the restaurant Nando's, after Duarte.[4] The restaurant incorporated influences from former Portuguese colonists from Mozambique, many of whom had settled on the south-eastern side of Johannesburg, after their homeland's independence in 1975. The logo is derived from the Rooster of Barcelos. The initial design and corporate identiy was developed by Mark Bischoff and Bruce Gemmel.

Controversy

Nando's is known in South Africa for its humorous but often controversial adverts. One such television advert from 2000, involved a blind woman being led into a pole intentionally and knocked unconscious by her guide dog, which then proceeded to eat the chicken that the woman had just purchased. This caused an uproar from people who were concerned that the blind would be offended. The South African Advertising Standards Authority called for the withdrawal of the advert. Several blind people were quoted in the media as finding the advert amusing. [citation needed]

In Australia, Nando's ran an advertising campaign based around the 2002 political controversy regarding the mandatory detention of illegal immigrants. The detainees had been waging a hunger strike campaign, even resorting to physically sewing their lips closed. Nando's adverts proclaimed that the strikers "decided to unsew their lips after hearing the news that with every Nando's quarter chicken combo, Nando's are giving away an extra quarter chicken free". Melbourne's Sphere Advertising said that the ad was designed to spark controversy, saying that they knew that "there's a section of our audience that's going to be uncomfortable...but we want to evoke a response".[23]

In 2007, there was further controversy in Australia when Nando's aired a sexually explicit advertisement, centered around a family whose mother figure was also a pole dancer. Despite complaints to have it removed, the Advertising Standards Bureau ruled that it did not contain excessive nudity for its M rating.[citation needed]The Australian Advertising Standards Bureau ruled that it did not infringe any advertising standards.[citation needed]

In 2008, Nando's created a cheeky campaign for their new Tropico Burger with the former football star Warick Capper as the face of the new promotion. Capper asks the question, "Whose buns does the sun shine out of the most? Mine or the Tropico Burger?"[where?] In 2011 Nando's launched their snack range in Australia through a separate website called "Little Hotties", which also created some controversy.

Malema

During the South African national elections of 2009, Nando's made an advert lampooning African National Congress Youth League president Julius Malema by using a puppet that resembled him. Malema's lawyers sued Nando's and the original advert was removed. However, an altered version was released, with the puppet's face pixelated and the voice altered. The puppet used in the advert was later sold at auction for R100,000 which was donated to an educational charity.[24]

Last Dictator Ad

In 2011 Nando's launched a "Last dictators" advert in South Africa.[25] The 60-second commercial shows a sad Robert Mugabe dining alone at Christmas in a large mansion while he reminisces about "happier times" with former dictators, such as playing water tag with Muammar Gaddafi, making snow angels in the sand with Saddam Hussein, singing Karaoke with Mao Zedong, pushing P. W. Botha on a swing set, and riding a tank with Idi Amin in a similar fashion to Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet embracing each other from the movie Titanic while the music from "Those Were the Days" is being played. Musekiwa Kumbula, holder of the Nando's franchise in Zimbabwe, said his group "strongly feels the advertisement is insensitive and in poor taste". The advert also offended The Zimbabwe youth group, Chipangano, has demanded an apology from Nando’s, threatened to boycott the South Africa-based chain and demanded the ad be withdrawn or the restaurant face retribution.[26][27] Nando's South Africa subsequently withdrew the advert citing threats to its staff in Zimbabwe from a youth group.[28]
