Hey Catfish, why you took it so serious? Well, i dunno, but if i'm still here after an unsuccessful RFA (and up and running) i think you can do the same. ANI reports don't damage your reputation (unless you have violated the policies, of course). You just did what you felt was right, although some considered it over-reacting. Rather then start yet another thread, I'll just piggy back on the last one that is currently open. :) I agree with the many users above that you should not let the ANI thread kill your hobby. We have all had our @#$@ moments at one time or another here (even if only internally expressed) Instead take on board the constructive points that were raised, maybe take with a grain of salt those that might have seemed a bit harsh but valid. Maybe take some time off as you suggested you might. Sometimes a few days away can put this place into a more liberating perspective. At the end of the day day it is just a website. An important and professional website, but not a place that should be causing you to feel distraught. Hi! Welcome to the fifth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

• Guest activity increased in July. Questions are up from an average of 36 per week in June to 43 per week in July, and guest profile creation has also increased. This is likely a result of the automatic invite experiments we started near the end of month, which seeks to lessen the burden on hosts and other volunteer who manually invite editors. During the last week of July, questions doubled in the Teahouse! (But don't let that deter you from inviting editors to the Teahouse, please, there are still lots of new editors who haven't found Teahouse yet.)
• More Teahouse hosts than ever. We had 12 new hosts sign up to participate at the Teahouse! We now have 35 hosts volunteering at the Teahouse. Feel free to stop by and see them all here.
• Phase two update: Host sprint. In August, the Teahouse team plans to improve the host experience by developing a simpler new-host creation process, a better way of surfacing active hosts, and a host lounge renovation. Take a look at the plan and weigh in here.
• New Teahouse guest barnstar is awarded to first recipient: Charlie Inks. Using the Teahouse barnstar designed by Heatherawalls, hosts hajatvrc and Ryan Vesey created the new Teahouse Guest Barnstar. The first recipient is Charlie Inks, for her boldness in asking questions at the Teahouse. Check out the award in action here.
• Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania! The Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania this past month, where editor retention and interface design was heavily discussed. I was looking at your userpage and saw your RfA guidelines and I thought they were quite high. I was quite surprised at "...at least 10 Non-Administrative Closures." I kinda thought that the rest doesn't support any would-be that just wants to focus on one area, which is still a help. I'm curious. Why is your bar where it is? Do you still require them (the certain areas:50 AIV reports;AFDs; also 10 articles isn't much but if someone is only interesed in 1 thing then...). Hi! No, I don't require them and I don't have the time to check for each one, although 5,000 edits and 8 months was always my standard. Also, yes, I am having my RFA in January and people have all sorts of checklists that are much more stringent than mine. I personally mainly do anti-vandalism and new page patrolling work, although I do contribute to AFDs and content creation. Best, Electric Catfish 00:39, 24 July 2012 (UTC).

Did you know?

I just changed a redirect into an article, Yadkin-Pee Dee river basin, and there was one fact that I thought might be interesting and I finally sourced it (the other articles that mention it don't source it but I will fix that tomorrow). "Pilot Mountain was original inspiration for "Mount Pilot" in the 1960s television show The Andy Griffith Show" Since Andy Griffith died recently, and I just recreated the article today, I thought I would mention it to someone familiar with DYK to see if it was worth considering. I've only had one DYK before, back in 08, for Pigs in the City. Drop me a note if you have the time and let me know if you think this is interesting enough. Thanks! I have added more, cleaned up the disambigs, no red links, added a nice image of Pilot Mnt. I would love it if someone else nom'ed it for DYK, I think the fact is rather interesting myself, as most people aren't aware that that many of the cities and towns in the TV show were based on real towns in this area "Mayberry" = Mount Airy, North Carolina (fun small town to visit, I bring visiting relatives there), Greensboro, North Carolina, etc. I've lived here 20 years now, it is an interesting place, culturally. Hi. I declined to block this person for spamming. Normally we required the person to have received and ignored 4 or 5 warnings before we block. Obviously if they've used other accounts, then we count those warnings to.

Personally, as an admin who's done a lot of spam cleanup in the past, I prefer to not block spammers -- it's easier to track their behavior and spam domains if you don't force them to move to a new sockpuppet account. I find that blacklisting their domains is much more effective. (Note that we also give them multiple warnings before blacklisting). Blacklisting is potentially devastating to their domain since there are indications the search engines sometimes look at our blacklist when deciding whether to blacklist them in search engine results.

I encourage you to check out Wikiproject Spam and report spammers and their domains to the project's talk page using the templates there.

I also recommend you warn spammers on their talk pages and use the special domain-tracking templates Wikiproject Spam uses -- it helps tracking. See what I've done on the editor's talk page.

Hey! I see that my question has become very popular, as other users have asked it either :) Well i learned about the creative commons copyrights not much time ago: Images must allow commercial use and derivative works to be eligible for Commons. So licenses lyke cc-by-2.0 and cc-by-nc-2.0 are not free enough to be uploaded, as De728631 wrote on his answer (which is completely right). It's an interesting question Hahc. I've asked it on my adoption course for a year or so, and I think I've had a total of 2 (out of about 30) people get it right. Based on the criteria here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:CORP), I provide the following arguments for notability.

1. Depth of Coverage- The New York Times, Wall St. Journal, Bloomberg, Reuters, the Washington Post and numerous others certainly feel that the company is notable. They have written significant articles on the company recently both on-line and in print publications. 2. Audience - these publications are national publications. 3. Interdependence of Sources- none of the cited sources (exception press release) have any relation to the company. Re: Retirement

First of all, I would like to thank everyone for the words of support and encouragement I have received over these few days. I see that I am wanted here and heave decided to return. I'm going to thank everyone who posted a message about my retirement personally this week, but I would like to begin by expressing my thanks for all of your support. Also, one of the points that was brought up at AN/I was that I disregarded warnings. I big to differ. JBW's note was politely written about not using the (Non-administrator comment) template at AIV to identify myself as a non-admin. Ponyo's comment was about using templates to show that I agree with the report. I have acknowledges both comments. Also, I hope to continue contributing to AN/I, UAA, and AIV by making helpful comments, such as pointing out that a s user has not been warned, but I do not intend on making decisions, such as removing reports. Also, I would like to point out to everyone that non-admins are allowed to help out in WP: PERM/C, and I do that myself. Lastly, I would like to thank Worm That Turned for offering to mentor me and I hope that I will be welcomed back into the community of Wikipedia. • @Mike: Thanks for deleting it. When I googled the title, I saw a video game forum from an unreliable source asking people what they would like that game to feature. If an article is clearly identified as fitting a CSD criterion, it can be tagged even during an AfD, and deleted. There are 1,000s of AfDs closed as 'already deleted' per CSD'. There is no point in wasting further time at the AfD. That said, anyone CSD tagging an article during an AfD needs to be very sure of deletion policies. Hi EC. I see you are still making comments and/or non admin closures at PERM. Although there is no strict rule against this, there really is no need for it and that's why we don't have clerks there; there are no backlogs, and it just doubles the work - admins still need to make the checks and the decision. Enterprise resource planning

The STiki user interface showing an incidence of vandalism. The buttons for classifying edits are on the left. The links for deeper investigation are near the bottom in "last revert" and "edit properties". The text box in the bottom left corner allows the user to modify the edit summary that is left when reverting. At the bottom of the Edit properties Box you can see a line Comment: which shows the Edit summary written while making the edit. the blank line here shows the editor did not give any edit summary.

Hi Electric Catfish. You undid an edition I did yesterday to the Enterprise resource planning page (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Enterprise_resource_planning&action=history). I don't have a lot of experience with the Wikipedia, but it seems like the warning was automatically generated. I removed a wrong addition (the same section repeated several times). The change was again included by Kuru.

I don't know if there is a way to remove this vandalism stain in my profile :-).

You reviewed Foundation for the Development of Caribbean Children at NPP, but did not notice that it was a complete copyvio from the organizations web sit, and should have been nominated for speedy deletion.

Catching this sort of thing is a critical responsibility at NPP -- almost as important as catching vandalism and libel. Any apparently well-written article about an organization or person who is likely to have a web site needs to be checked against it--and it's even easier, when it is listed at the bottom of the article.

Hi! Sorry to let you down here. I usually use Twinkle and manually Google articles to see if they are copyvios. I tried out the New Page Triage tool today and it informed me of certain issues in articles, so I assumed that it would also detect copyvios. I see that I was wrong and I have to manually detect if it is a copyvio. Anyways, I'll keep this in mind in the future and thank you for letting me know about it. The problem is that the edit warring couldn't have persisted. They stopped edit warring two days ago and the issue was fixed a few hours later by the addition of some references. Adding a warning so long after the event is an unnecessary re-escalation of a solved dispute, and could easily backfire by provoking User:Ahnoneemoos to become deliberately disruptive in retaliation. Hey Catfish. Just a quick note to say that I agree with Mrmatiko. The purpose of the diff on the EW report is that someone has tried to stop them, but it's failed. Adding a warning 2 days after they've stopped wouldn't stop anything (think putting the breaks on a car which isn't moving)... but it might escalate issues, just as Don't template the regulars explains. It's not an accusatory response. I work at WP: AF/FP and I treated your question like a false positive report. It turned out to be incorrect, so I linked you to your entries. The abuse filter is complicated and uses a pattern of regular expressions (regex) to filter out edits. It also filters out edits based on account age, edit count, etc. You never actually made the edits- they were disallowed by the edit filter. Best, Electric Catfish 11:11, 16 August 2012 (UTC).

Worm has made some excellent suggestions, perhaps it's time for the project to start looking at those and the overall concept with a view to reducing the bureaucracy and establishing criteria that may be more realistic. Admins have a set of tools at their disposal for assessing a user's performance for any rights (and deciding how to vote on RfA, etc). Some of these tools are are available to non-admins, but knowing how to get an accurate 'at-a-glance' evaluation from them needs an expert eye. Kudpung, I hate the bureaucracy of the CVUA. I personally don't have the time to run a full adoption program like Worm does, so I use the CVUA to teach new users about anti vandalism and new page patrolling, instead of a full adoption course. I'd like any interested user to join, regardless of the edit count. IMHO, edit counts are meaningless. I have over 9,500 and I couldn't care less. Anyways, I'd love you to show me how to do those types of evaluations, as it willcome in handy. Lastly, thanks for all of your great work at PERM! --Electric Catfish 11:18, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

If you hate it, then you will understand why NAO are superfluous - it's just creating more bureaucracy and simply makes more work for the admin - in the worst case scenario, the admins will just move on and let the application go stale. The most useful tool (if the user has opted in, and they should consider doing so if they want admins to consider them for user rights) is this one. Take a look at yours and let me know how you think I would read it. Then I'll explain with some other examples. You can leave your answer here to save cluttering talk pages. BTW, I meant the suggestions Worm has made for a revamp of the CVU; most people there appear to concur, but no one seems to be actually doing anything about it yet. Today I noticed a message had been sent to what is apparently my IP Address by you concerning "disruptive editing". This is distressing to me as I do not remember making any edits to any Wikipedia pages, ever, and i certainly don't want to be disruptive.

Hi! To have an SPI case, we need to prove that the user is using the accounts for abusive purposes. I believe that they are both connected and have PRODed both articles. I'm going to give them an sockpuppetry warning (assuming good faith) and keep an eye out. If you see them abusing the accounts, press TW, than ARV, and than select SPI. Template filter and Dynamic IP - AIV

Good morning, Electriccatfish2. I'm just stopping in to pass along some information regarding the vandalism reports you were clerking. This information is not intended as criticism but as useful stuff to help you do a better job in your chosen field of activity here on Wikipedia.

In this report the IP had only made one edit, but that's because they are editing from a dynamic IP. This means a user may be assigned a different IP each time they access the internet or reset their router. Even a short-term block is of little use because they just have to re-set their router to be assigned a new IP and be back in business. Recent IPs used by this person include 2.144.6.168, 2.145.43.142, 2.146.239.136. Here's a tool that can be used to determine the size of the range. In this instance, plugging the three IPs into the range gives Range 2.144.0.0/14 (up to 262,144 users would be blocked). Way too big for a range block. Page protection would be a better choice in this instance. There's some good information on IPs at Wikipedia:Blocking IP addresses. Another cool tool is this one, which can be used to view, at a glance, all the contribs from a given range. An admin will check, before issuing a range block, to determine if other people are making useful edits from a range. Range blocks are tricky, and even clever admins have been known to block entire countries or commit other such massive mistakes, so it's a tool we use with great caution and care.

The other report I noticed you had commented on was this bot report. Template vandalism is a problem, because a vandal can insert, say, a pornographic photo or an ad for their company, and have it appear in every article where the template is used. So once a template has a lot of transclusions, it will be semi'd or even full protected. But the bot does not give warnings, as in most instances the user has accidentally damaged the template. Since you can't see the edit, you have no way of knowing whether they have accidentally tripped the filter or if they are an actual vandal, so there's not much you can do to help the investigating administrator. Hi Dianna! Thanks for all of the useful links to these advanced tools. I usually deal with regular vandalism here, not complex IP vandalism. Anyways, I'll read up on the technical stuff regarding IPs. I'm not that good with computers. I'll generally point out if they haven't been warned, or if they've only edited once, etc. Also, almost all of Mr. Z-bot's reports are declined. The first time a user or IP trips certain filters, it will report them to AIV. I work with the abuse filters a lot here, and I have proposed to stop Mr. Z-bot from making these types of reports. HI EC. I saw your non-admin comment at UAA earlier, but I am not sure it is necessary. Clerking at UAA is not always useful, because an admin will still have to make the call as to whether a username is a violation of the username policy or not - your comments do not speed up the process. Also, as viewing deleted contributions is often important in determining UAA reports, it would be difficult for non-admins to make useful comments. I know you and I came to the same conclusion, but I had to make the decision independently of you. Clerking at UAA is really not that helpful, because any admin will have to assess the situation themselves, regardless of what you've said. As for deleted contributions, you really need to see deleted contributions to make a helpful comment - some contributions are deleted because they're promotional (which might lead me to hard block a user) and some are deleted under A7 (which is not promotional and would lead me to discuss the issue or soft block). If you've not seen the contributions, your comments will not help at all, and might be counter-productive. A username is added to CAT:UAA as soon as a username warning is put on the page. My best advice would be to wait around 5-10 minutes from the first edit the user makes after the warning. Until they've edited, we cannot tell if they've been online, so don't know whether they've read the or not. Giving them 5-10 minutes, means we've given them a reasonable amount of time from the period we can be confident that they've seen the message. Hey there, saw you were looking to adopt new users. I've been actively editing since the beginning of the year, and hope to contribute more and more. It's interesting you do a lot of work against vandalism, as I actually got suspected of sockpuppetry. Your mentor Kudpang actually added me as a suspect, simply doing his job. Anyways, I'm not at all worried about it as I know I'm innocent. But I learned from that ordeal how I should be careful not to reword or reorganize information that's already been marked as original research.

Hi, You have recently posted a warning on my talk page RE: edit war. With due respect, I have clearly stated the reason for the revert as being "deletion not justified: repeated requests for providing justification have failed." The proof of these requests are here. Vast amount of the article has been deleted, and the editor who has made the deletions has repeatedly ignored my requests for justification for making the deletion--no specific violation against any Wikipedia guideline is cited by the editor against any statement he has deleted.

I am wondering what has triggered the citation for edit war, and why it hasn't triggered for the other editor who has done a lot of edits, most of them deletions, on the specific article.

I do want to perform my editing within the confines of Wikipedia guideline, and want to resolve the conflict in an amicable manner. Please advice on how to approach this situation when the other editor has deleted vast amount of info in an article, and then repeatedly ignores requests in the talk page for justifications regarding these deletions

There is an RfC going on for the article. But the other editor has trimmed a lot of content--without a proper presentation of information to other reviewers, it would provide a potential for them to reach a different conclusion. I tried to use DRN, but realized that only one form of DR can be used--there is an RfC put on by user S&P already. Apparently a 3rd editor on the article who has encountered a lot of difficulties with S&P has already tried DRB but was declined by the board. I am pretty sure we can get something resolved by using WP:DRB, as any objective 3rd arbitrator could easily detect a pattern in the talk page. However, we have reached a deadlock here. You mean significance or importance, not notability. The absence of an assertion of notability does not mean that an article meets the requirements for A7. In order to avoid A7, an article only needs to have a plausible assertion of significance or importance, which is a lower standard than notability. Yes, I agree with Demi. For example, an article about a local entertainer may assert that the entertainer has made several television appearences. That is enough of a claim to pass A7, but not enough to pass the relevant notability guideline, WP: ENT. In a case like that, I'd nominate it for deletion instead. Hi Electric - I saw this diff, and was a bit puzzled - why would you "resubmit for review" even if you obviously already knew you were going to decline it less than a minute later? Wouldn't it have made more sense to just let the user in question know on their talk? This would have avoided the harsh "declined" template... Sorry for being a wee bit nit-picky ... Hi Theo! I was answering help-me requests and someone asked for their AFC submission to be reviewed. Since I'm active in that area, before determining what I was going to do with the submission (in terms of pass/decline), I submitted it for review. It only has a few sentences, none of which assert notability, plus it is poorly sourced, so I declined it. I also left a personal message on the user's talk page. I don't think that the decline template is harsh or bitey. The AFCH script didn't send a decline template since I submitted it. Instead, I notified the user with what improvements need to be made. You too. DYK is really the reason I became an admin with the help and support of those working in the area. You really get a chance to hit on everything policy and guideline wise. I used to have an essay here that would help those starting (a quick cheat sheet); however, things have changed a little bit and it needs some updating. I think it is great that they get to benefit from your enthusiasm. Turn over there is about every 4 to 6 months and they always need help. I liked how it gave me a little taste of everything. Interesting new subjects, interacting with new editors and those far more experienced then myself, and becoming more familiar with the various guidelines and different MOSs. When you start doing queue setups, you'll get a good taste of what to expect as an admin sometimes. Your basically taking responsibility for what is going to be featured on the main page and that they meet all the requirement and guidelines of the site. Sometimes stressful, but rewarding. Do that well and demonstrating that ability well goes far ie. "I thought you were an admin already :). Calmer Waters 22:47, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

I actually found a link to your cheatsheet and I find it incredibly helpful. DYK gives you a taste of everything and it also helps you learn all of the policies and MOSes. I believe that it's not just the hook that has to meet the criteria, but also the article has to be written well, and comply with policies such as MOS, BLP, NPOV, etc. A few experienced users have already told me that they thought that I was an admin already. I personally never associated DYKs with adminship until I saw your RFA, to be honest. Although the main page is fully-protected, most of my interactions with admins are CSD tagging, deletion discussions, or vandal reporting. One thing that I noticed is how long it takes to do the review :). They look like they could use a bit of help there with the reviews. I've seen users who have created less articles than me have excellent hooks and I hope to do the same. Thank you for all of your help, Electric Catfish 22:57, 3 September 2012 (UTC).

DYK reviews

Hi. Thanks for pitching in at WP:DYK. It would be appreciated if you would provide some documentation of your DYK reviews, rather than simply adding a tickmark. As described at Wikipedia:Did you know/Reviewing guide, review of a nomination means checking not only the hook fact sourcing, but also article length and newness, overall sourcing of the article, image license (if an image is proposed for use in DYK), absence of copyvios, and several other considerations. Providing notes on what you checked -- and what you found in your review -- helps other DYK participants; without some notes, somebody else probably will feel obligated to do the review all over again to make sure that the tickmark was valid. (Also, YMMV, but I find it useful to write down what I did, as sometimes it reminds me that I forgot to check for one of the requirements.) --Orlady (talk) 18:46, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Well, you should put all the user boxes in the same place, including the adoption one at the top. Instead if having the big blue YGM box, do a nowiki template - {{YGM}}, because that looks quite untidy. I found them. They are in Archive 11. They are instructions on how to close stuff. I'd have to assume you meant Armbrust's 11th archive, but I don't think you meant that, as any section's there about perm archiving isn't particularly informative, or at least anything found there can be found checking the perm page's hist and perm archive pages. I guess this is a decent place to say, not sure, but just noticed that WP:RPE/Reviewer/Archive 13 and WP:RPE/Reviewer/Historical/Archive 13 are different, however WP:RPE/Reviewer/Archive 12 redirects to WP:RPE/Reviewer/Historical/Archive 12. If one navigates through the links at the top on WP:RPE/Reviewer/Archive 13, and they click a number before 12, then they click 13, they're taken to the old archive. Unless this was intentional, shouldn't the current archive 13 be moved to archive 14 and then redirect archive 13 to WP:RPE/Reviewer/Historical/Archive 13?

Hey Catfish. I've been thinking about your request to skip the copyright lesson and come back to it, and I think for the moment I'm going to decline. Copyright is such an important part of the encyclopedia, as we want to remain free. It is absolutely essential that every user, especially every user who has aspirations of being a respected and well thought of editor - perhaps even an admin - understands at least the basics of copyright. I know that it's a bit of a difficult lesson, but it's also the most important lesson that I teach, so I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to knuckle down and see what you can get your head around.
