Hosdurg is one of the two taluks that constitute the Kasaragod District in the South Indian state of Kerala, the other one being Kasaragod Taluk. It shares its borders on north with Kasaragod taluk, south with Kannur District, east with Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka and on the west with the Arabian sea. With an area of 900.3 km2 (90030 hectares), it is the smaller of the two taluks.[1] It is divided into two Firkas, namely Hosdurg and Nileshwaram. Kanhangad and Nileshwaram are the municipalities within the taluk. Hosdurg (after which the taluk is named),a kilometer south of Kanhangad town, hosts the taluk office. Other major settlements include Trikarpur, Cheruvathur and Chittarikkal. Bekal Fort is situated in the taluk. Etymology of Hosdurg derived from Kannada with meaning new(Hosa)+fort(Durga).


As per the 2001 census, Hosdurg taluk had a total population of 449,595 persons, which include 217,083 males and 232,512 females.[1] Hosdurg taluk has a favorable sex ratio. The literacy rate is as high as 85.82%, which is higher than the national average.[1] In Hosdurg taluk, 12.42% of the total population is between the age of 0–6 years.[1] Malayalam is the local and the administrative language of the region.|Tulu is most widely spoken language Vellarikund is another major place in Hosdurg taluk.
