Walmart Market is a chain of grocery stores launched by Walmart in 1998.[2] These stores are designed to be the opposite of vastly larger superstores. These smaller stores are meant to "woo shoppers with easier parking, less crowded aisles and quicker checkout." Walmart Market stores offer a variety of products including a full line of groceries. Walmart Market was Neighborhood Market from 1998 to 2010.

Introduced in 1998 as Walmart Neighborhood Market, Walmart Markets range around 40,000 square feet (3,700 m2), which is a quarter of the size of a typical Walmart Supercenter in the United States. However, in many countries, stores of this scale would be classified as superstores or "compact hypermarkets." Walmart Markets employ 80–100 employees and offer about 28,000 items.

[edit] United States

[edit] Walmart Market

As of 2008, the Walmart Market chain has expanded into many smaller Southern markets in the United States. Some of these stores are located relatively close to existing Walmart Supercenter stores; such examples include Center Point, Alabama; Mandeville, Louisiana; Homewood, Alabama; Sherwood, Arkansas; Fayetteville, Arkansas; Southaven/Horn Lake, Mississippi; Kenner, Louisiana; Plano, Texas and Norfolk, Virginia. Aggressive expansion of this division is planned in the next five years.[citation needed] They have built 5 stores in Wichita, Kansas. There are also some stores set to open in Wisconsin, and Beaverton, Oregon replacing a recently closed Ashley Furniture HomeStores [3] .

[edit] Supermercado

Walmart opened "Supermercado de Walmart" locations to appeal to Hispanic communities in the United States. These stores are similar to Walmart Markets. The first one, a 39,000 square feet (3,600 m2) store in the Spring Branch area of Houston, opened on Wednesday April 29, 2009. The store was a conversion of an existing Walmart.

[edit] Puerto Rico

In July 2004, Walmart acquired Amigo Supermarkets in Puerto Rico. They are very similar to Walmart Markets, but the name is Amigo. The employees at Amigo Supermarkets wear Walmart ID tags.

[edit] Canada

In 2005, the concept rolled into Canada. Walmart opened three stores in 2006 (one in London, Ontario, and two in the Greater Toronto area), but the number could increase in the future. In Canada, Walmart Markets are connected to regular Walmarts to form Walmart Supercentres. There are now over 30 Supercentres in Canada with plans for over 100.

[edit] Argentina

In 1997, Walmart entered Argentina with one Supercenter in Avellaneda (Greater Buenos Aires). After slow growth during the following decade, a new store format was developed inspired by the Market stores. The new stores were branded Chango Mas. Expansion followed rapidly and other smaller formats spun off this concept. As of June 2011, the store count for Chango Mas and sister stores is as follows:

  • Changomas 27
  • Changomas Express 7
  • Mi Changomas 5

There are currently 28 Supercenters in Argentina.
