Revision as of 07:20, 18 February 2022

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 09:11 on 15 September 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors with "In the news"

Errors in "Did you know ..."

  • "... that the 2012 Olympic women's soccer semifinal between the Canadian and the American national soccer teams was called "the greatest knockout match in major-tournament football" since 1982?" - Look, I'm not taking any sides on the soccer vs football argument (I support rugby, which is technically rugby football...), but to have both of them in the same hook is just ridiculous. You can make arguments for soccer (it involved the American team, and presumably Canadian usuge is the same) and for football (it was held in the UK), but can we please pick one and roll with it? Fgf10 (talk) 00:08, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see the problem in having both. Surely by now everyone reading the hook understands it's called different things in different places. We can't change "football" because it's a direct quote. We shouldn't change "soccer" because that's what the teams are called. I don't think it's going to confuse anyone. --Floquenbeam (talk) 00:25, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
One option is to just apply MOS:BRACKET (per Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Original wording) e.g. "major-tournament [soccer]". Mixing WP:ENGVARs reads weird. Aside: Personally, I think DYK hooks make to much lazy usage of quotes without WP:INTEXT attribution to it's originator. If the person isn't notable enough to mention, it's a cheap use of a quote.Bagumba (talk) 06:07, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
