Template:WikiProject Council Navigation

This page can be used to gauge support for potential WikiProjects before putting a lot of effort into creating a detailed project page.

Proposing a project
To propose a project, write a brief description (including links to the related Wikipedia articles), and add it along with your name to the list below (in alphabetical order by topic). Some boilerplate you can use:
== Name of project ==
; Description : [description here]

; Interested Wikipedians (please add your name)
# [your name here]

; Comments
Expressing interest
If you're interested in any of the projects listed here, simply add your name to the appropriate list and start contributing to the relevant articles.
Creating a project
If your project gains support from 5-10 active Wikipedians, it could probably benefit from the organisation boost of having a proper page. Remove it from this list and follow the instructions for creating new projects. If you want to start a page before you have 5-10 active Wikipedians, consider setting up the page on a subpage of your user page until it is active, while leaving the posting here with a link to the user page.
Requesting a project
There may be cases where you believe that there is a pronounced need for the creation of a project which does not yet exist which you may not personally feel qualified to join. Some examples might be certain countries, disciplines, etc. In the event you are aware of such a situation, please add the relevant name to the list of projects below and see if there are any individuals interested in creating such a project.
Archive
In the event a given proposal does not receive sufficient support within 4 months of posting here to create a project or task force, it is added to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Archive page.

Projects

WikiProject Feature Sounds

A WikiProject dedicated to increasing Wikipedia's collection of Featured Sounds.
Featured Sounds is barely recognized as Wikipedia users don't realize that it exists, and do know the fundamentals of what defines a Featured Sound. I propose a WikiProject be created to search, critique, and debate the best sound and musical recordings for use on Wikipedia. In doing so, it will greatly enhance sound and musical articles.

Academic Regalia

Description
This would be a project about the Regalia of various Academic institution throughout the world, as well as maintaining articles about historical and currently used academic ceremonial items and Ceremonial dress. This project could be expanded to deal with legal and parlimentary Ceremony as well.

There are many current pages that are scattered throughout wikipedia which include segments of varying quality and detail about various institutions' regalia (in cloth and in terms of other academic ceremonial items and actions). This would be a project which would cover all of these areas and maintain articles and article sub-sections about the history and currency of universities' regalia. This project would also, ideally, obtain photographs of the regalia of the universities or other academic institutions in action, procession or on display. This project would also rearrange the layout of articles which are soley dedicated to the dress of one university, and either add those sections to the article about the university in question or add them to a larger umbrella article which covered the academic regalia of universities in a geographical region. And finally individuals writing or updating articles in this project would correspond with the universities in question to confirm the accuracy of the articles content.

Some articles which would fall under the purvey of this subject:

et al.

Several extant projects already work with some aspects of this field. This project would be created to serve as a focusing point for animation per se, as well as to potentially provide the framework for more devoted groups dealing with animation further down the line. John Carter 20:49, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It would be very important to make sure this project does not devolve into fannish obsession. The last thing we need is for it to become WikiProject Naruto or something. This should be a historically grounded, meticulous project. Phil Sandifer 20:55, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Could you not just broaden the scope of Wikipedia:WikiProject American Animation? –thedemonhog talkeditsbox 00:25, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This sounds like it would also cover WP:ANIME and possibly the proposed merge of the American Animation project with WP:COMICS. I'm not sure how all these projects would feel about suddenly being grouped under one umbrella but it may be a good idea if it goes well. Stardust8212 00:34, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, for some obscure reasons, American animation and anime aren't "very compatible". However, a generalized project of "animation" will encompass all that. KyuuA4 15:56, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The proposed merger with comics seems more or less unlikely. The specific purposes of this project are to more or less cover all animation. While it might technically be possible to broaden the scope of WikiProject American Animation, that would be a matter for the members of that existing project to decide, given it has had recent activity. I'm not averse to the idea myself, though. Regarding working with the Anime and Manga Project, I think we pretty much intend to leave alone any active projects, unless like above we are allowed to change the one existing project page. But there are instances of European animation, etc., which aren't currently covered by anything, as well as the other forms above, and that's more or less what this project might work on. John Carter 17:00, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm almost interested but what about the other cartoons covered by other projects? Do you have to cover them? Girl With An Attitude 09:25, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If another WikiProject or group related to the subject of animation covers articles, there'd be no real purpose in our doing so as well, so long as that other project remains active, with the possible exception of some of the "main" articles, where we might be more likely to be able to add some content which might help the article. Athens

Description
This Wikiproject would help create and expand articles that relate to the city of Athens, Greece. Such articles would be Athens, Athenian Democracy, History of Athens, cultural and historical influence, and so on. The WP would center on the culture, influence, art, philosophy, politics, history, and geography. Other major influential cities like, London, Belfast, Philadelphia, New York, Sydney, and Hong Kong all have WikiProjects.

Proposal makes eminent sense. Dr.K. 22:17, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not convinced that this would make more sense than a WP:GREECE Athens task force. And in case we need to draw more attention to the historical articles about ancient Athens, there's always WP:CGR. --Michalis Famelis (talk) 17:55, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But Athens is so much more. It's influence spans from antiquity and continues today. It's not just Ancient Athens, there's Ottoman/classical Athens, there's the Dilean League, the politics of Greece, all the famous buildings, landmarks, events, famous Athenians, etc. El Greco (talk · contribs) 18:26, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
True. However, there are a few advantages. One, if you were to make yourself a subproject of Greece, you could take advantage of their existing infrastructure, rather than having to create and monitor your own. And, yes, there project banner could probably be adjusted in the same way the Australia banner is adjusted for city projects like on the Talk:Sydney page. Also, in the event that there are several projects relevant to the article, which seems likely as often as not, there will be one less banner on the page. And, if they're combined into the {{WikiProjectBannerShell}}, it could be made to link to the Athens "task force" or whatever anyway. Lastly, task forces aren't recorded as inactive and, potentially, nominated for deletion like projects sometimes are. John Carter 21:27, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not bothered by making all those templates/banners and other stuff up. So far we have 4 members, if one more joins it'll be great. Come on Join the Athens WP!!!! El Greco(talk) 16:09, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Australian rock music

Description
A WikiProject dedicated to improving the coverage of Australian rock music, encompassing Australian alternative, metal, punk and mainstream rock music. Also intent upon expanding Australian rock music artists who're not able to sustain a WikiProject themselves, such as Billy Thorpe, Icehouse, Noiseworks, Cold Chisel, Thirsty Merc and many others. Also within this would be the Australian sub-genres, rock-performance venues, rock tv-shows, festivals, the pages of the artists' works (albums, EPs, songs etc) and other major rock events in Australia. There's easily 10,000 existing and potential articles covered by the project and over time this number will expand also as artists further emerge. --lincalinca 01:11, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    • Please note that per Wikipedia's policy on notability, and WP:NOT, Wikipedia isn't a place for biographies (or even biographical information, in general) about individuals who haven't separately been considered important enough to have national articles about them. A company of soldiers is, what, a hundred or two people, of whom perhaps three or four might have (subsequently) become notable? In short, these seems to involve a handful of articles, which isn't what WikiProjects are intended for. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 12:56, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

British American football

Description
This proposed project would deal with the sport of American football as played, organised and promoted in Britain. There already exist a number of articles on this subject, such as that of the British American Football Association, and teams in various leagues(e.g. London Olympians, Birmingham Bulls, Bristol Aztecs). Some of these articles are barely more than advertising spiels written by the teams themselves, BUT I believe the teams do have notability and that the articles could become good ones. Although an amateur league, various BAFL teams have been reported on by the BBC[1] (As well as some games)[2], so Notability is established.

Outside of the Modern BAFL, the project would help document American football's history in the country, including notable defunct teams, e.g. London Monarchs.

I have already begun improving certain articles, but my interest in American Football has only begun recently, and so experts would be very helpful. Man from the Ministry 19:51, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • If the scope of your project idea is very narrow (such as a TV show, music band, video game, etc), or your idea is a variation on a common theme, consider starting a task force of an existing project instead of a whole new WikiProject. Chris (talk) 06:04, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Celts

Description
This culture, which has influenced literature, farming, navigation and so much of European life, for 4,000 years, and covers places as diverse as Portugal and Asia Minor, would be worthy of its own project. Modern areas still Celtic include Brittany, Cornwall, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Scotland and Wales. 1. Saw your note advertising this. To be honest I am too busy to devote anything other than cursory attention to it at present, but I thought you might be interested in WikiProject Scottish Islands. I toyed with the idea and the advice was that there were probably too few editors to keep it going. Perhaps in the long run there will prove to be the case, but just creating it it seems to have co-ordinated and galvanised support. There are now umpteen project pages, 500 WPSI banners, over 100 infoboxes etc. etc. - and we only started in July. Check it out at WP:ISLE. If you know of at least two other editors keenly interested in your project my suggestion is - just go for it. If it is interesting and dynamic it will attract attention. Good luck. Ben MacDui (Talk) 08:07, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  2. IMHO, there are 2 subjects : 1. the historical Celtic area and civilization, 2. the revival in the XIXth century, which is still "in progress" (see the recent attitude of Galicia and Asturias in Spain about their Celtic roots). I am more likely (and more competent) to contribute in articles devoted to the modern meaning of the Celtic World. Gwalarn 11:45, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  3. I like this idea, but would looking at the confused and frequently innaccurate entry for the Celt page, I will note I am only interested if we can keep this up to a certain level of respectibility --Tle585 16:56, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
reply If you can delineate what specifically the pitfalls and potholes are, together we can come up with standards to either aim for or adhere to, and make that part of the goals of the new Project. Thanks all for what you'll bring to the proverbial table! Chris 02:28, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  1. I'm involved in othetr stuff, but will try to contribute. Lurker (said · done) 12:57, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  2. I think the current activity on the talk page of the Celts article, warrants a project page. The implications of redefining "Celt" have a huge impact on more than just that particular page. For example, the "Celtic Christianity" page would be affected profoundly.Gabhala 00:53, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like there is enough interest to at least set up this group as a task force of some other project. Trying to think of which group would be appropriate is rather difficult, though maybe Wikipedia:WikiProject Ethnic groups might come closest. Have you thought of contacting them regarding the possibility of setting up as a task force? John Carter 15:24, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • You mention Brittany, Cornwall, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Scotland and Wales, but you fail to mention the rest of England. Perhaps you could avoid talking specifically of 'Celts', about whom there is much disagreement, and somehow use the word 'Celtic' instead. One thing there can be no doubt about is that many peoples were certainly influenced by Celtic culture and languages. --Mal 19:08, 17 October 2007 (UTC) (forgot to sign in) 19:04, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

England is not really a 'Celtic' nation in any sense of the word (even genetically as there isn't such a thing as a Celtic gene). The area itself used to belong to Celtic speaking/cultured people but that was before England as a political entity existed...it was founded by Germanic tribes who either 'wiped out' or mixed with the native inhabitants but imposed a Germanic culture and language on the nation none the less. Scotland, Wales...etc...are Celtic because as entities they were founded by the 'Celts' and/or have cultures derived for that old culture. There is (despite what many Wikipedians think) nothing wrong with Germanic culture or England being Germanic and certainly nothing wrong with being Celtic or for that matter with the British (as in the inhabitants of the British Islands) being pretty diverse genetically, culturally and linguistically (even when it comes to the various 'Celtic' peoples). CJKV disambiguation pages

Description
This project will work within the frameworks of Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation to handle disambiguation involving CJKV charactersChinese characters used across 4 East Asian languages (and the criteria whether or not to disambiguate). Cooperation between the 4 relevant language projects WP:ZH, WP:JA, WP:KO, and WP:VIET will be essential. It must be noted that Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English) discourages Chinese characters in article titles, so CJKV disambiguation should be done as a last resort, whenever a simple redirect will not work. Example cases where CJKV disambiguation may (or may not) be necessary are listed at: User:Endroit/Chinese characters. and 財閥 are good examples where disambiguation are necessary.

Description: This is a proposal for a project aiming to the improving and expanding of Costa Rica-related articles. Articles such as List of schools in Costa Rica and Battle of Rivas (which are extremely important to understand Costa Rica's history and social structure) are left in a permanent stub condition and left with none or vague info. Other institutions, such as Saint Mary High School, have taken of Wikipedia's lack of information about Costa Rica to set up personal web pages or biased articles about themselves. This project would aim to improve and radically change this articles until they are in a professional and unbiased format.

These articles and areas technically do not fall within the scope of Wikipedia:WikiProject United Kingdom, so it may be that creation of a separate project is required. • The deorphaning team is currently working on the backlog of orphaned articles. If this project is approved, it will take the place of the deorphaning team. Changing from an organisation to a WikiProject would allow for better classification of orphaned articles, guides on how to deorphan an article, better structure, and easier collaboration with other WikiProjects when needed. Hello, I am the creator of the team. I had originally called the "WikiProject De-Orphaning", but I had it in Category:Wikipedia Organizations. This was bought to my attention, and I re-named it. Also, there's the article rescue squadron, and I do not see why that should be a WikiProject. That is my opinion, at least. Cheers,JetLover (Report a mistake) 02:08, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Description
The project's goal is to improve the main article of Desperate Housewives, and to create new articles for the episode list and also to expand the characters articles.

It ios clear to see that most of the D.H pages have a large disorganization especially the character pages and the main page. The best thing is to organizane all these pages in a wikiproject and expand even more the D.H. pages.

  • If the scope of your project idea is very narrow (such as a TV show, music band, video game, etc), or your idea is a variation on a common theme, consider starting a task force of an existing project instead of a whole new WikiProject. Chris 08:41, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment - This appears to be much better done as a task force. Only a few articles (at most!) need be created: one for the show, a list of episodes, a list of characters and character descriptions. --Lquilter (talk) 15:58, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Too narrow for a Wikiproject. I just looked at about five episodes at random, and saw nothing beyond a plot rehash, trivia, and cast/character lists. None of them had anything to warrant at article per WP:EPISODE. Pagrashtak 23:18, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Task Force at best; probably task force isn't even needed. Absolutely no need for separate articles for each episode or each character. A few articles at best are needed -- one for the show itself; one for the episodes. For this show, the characters can be included in the article about the show. I don't think any of the individual episodes merit a separate article. --Lquilter (talk) 16:23, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Due weight

Description
This project would exist to help ensure that content in wikipedia articles receives only due weight, as per WP:Undue weight, and that where possible verifiable, reliably sourced content which cannot be included in one article because of undue weight concerns be kept in wikipedia in some form.

I am concerned that this project with a description as worded would encourage people to keep content which may not belong anywhere in the encyclopedia. For example, if someone writes a WP:POVFORK which is deleted, would they be able to use this WikiProject to help them keep the content elsewhere? If so, this might be problematic. ScienceApologist 19:20, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the question. No, I don't think that such explicit POV forks would be anything like what this project would try to do, although I'm not really sure how to write it to make that clear. What I was more thinking along the lines of would be, for instance, if one or more given books deal with a given "fringe theory", and the book/s met notability guidelines, then creation of articles on those books might be one way to deal with the matter of undue weight, moving it into articles on those books. Those new articles would have to met the same criteria as any other content in wikipedia, though. Alternately, given content on a certain individual which wouldn't be included in their biography for weight reasons might be included in a daughter article, if the amount of reasonable, verifiable, encyclopedia content merited the creation of one. Even these new "daughter" pages would I hope be checked to ensure that they individually meet the standards of all content. But any content which clearly did not belong on the basis of any of the indicators would I hope be objected to and opposed by this project. Like I implied, though, phrasing that in a short way is something I'm obviously not capable of right now. John Carter 19:30, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think this is a reasonable idea if handled right; it may help from some articles becoming mere criticism of the figure or event rather than merely presenting the material; which would add to undue weight. A brief snippet, with a link to the material would suffice in many cases, if weight is a concern. --Northmeister 00:20, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm concerned about "reliably sourced content which cannot be included in one article because of undue weight concerns be kept in wikipedia in some form." Wikipedia is not meant to be a database of all reliably sourced content. Above, John Carter states that it would still have to meet other WP guidelines -- presumably and most importantly, notability. But I worry that this project will, in essence, end up hindering the development of balanced articles on a controversial topic. For instance, articles like women's studies have significant criticisms that end up raising WP:Undue weight concerns. The right approach is usually to integrate criticism into the article as appropriate. When criticism becomes its own topic, then it needs its own article. All of that is currently supported in basic WP:MOS and other guidelines & policies. My concern is that this project -- even if intended to generate new articles as relevant -- would inevitably come to be used to "salvage" material that is not meritorious of a new article but is simply a POV fork or a trivia page. ...
But a counterexample: For instance, what about Spanish Civil War; there is an extensive list of "related" films & literature. These could be split off into extensive bibliographies of materials, and in fact there is probably a good article there -- "Spanish Civil War in arts and literature", because there have been multiple art exhibitions and books on this precise topic. It does seem like this kind of project could help with that. ... I just worry about how to limit this project so that it creates legitimate daughter spin-off articles; and not POV forks etc. --Lquilter (talk) 23:29, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Your questions and concerns are valid ones, and at this point I don't think that they can be handles with broad generalizations, as there will be specific factors invovled in most cases. We will try to create guidelines for various subjects, probably based on the central subject's own notability, but it will take some effort to be successful. Any input in the decisions if the project ever gets started will be welcome. John Carter (talk) 23:34, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Duke University

Description
A WikiProject to standardize and improve all articles related to Duke University. The project page would provide a central forum to outline specific important tasks, collect article/photo requests, and improve to GA or FA articles that are essential/pivotal to Duke, while deciding on mergers or deletions for unencylopedic and trivial stubs. While every one of these actions can and are carried out on the individual pages, a Duke WikiProject would, IMO, streamline the whole maintenance/editing/writing process and facilitate greater cooperation and input.

Dutch Politics

Description
After a brief discussion with C mon (talk · contribs), our in-house expert on Dutch politics, I propose the creation of WikiProject Dutch Politics. It would be affiliated with WikiProject Netherlands and WikiProject Politics. We have made a list of 10 general topics that this WikiProject would cover:
  1. Creating articles on Dutch M(E)Ps and government ministers in past and present
  2. Adding GFDL photos to articles on Dutch politicians and parties
  3. Improving articles on Dutch ministries, Dutch politicians and Dutch political parties
  4. Creating and improving articles on Dutch interest groups
  5. De-listing Politics of the Netherlands (terminology)
  6. Creating and improving articles on Dutch local and provincial politics
  7. Improving articles surrounding politics of the Netherlands
  8. Creating and improving articles on Dutch political history
  9. Improving articles on national elections
  10. Creating and improving articles on cabinets and cabinet formations
WikiProject Dutch Politics would be a sister to WikiProject Australian Politics and WikiProject Taiwanese Politics. I feel that a separate WikiProject would be better suited for bridging the gap between WikiProject Netherlands and WikiProject Politics than a task force. It is understood that the scope of this project could be seen to be rather narrow. On that basis, it is expected that this particular group may try to become a subproject of another extant project.
  • A relatively short-lived task force could clean up the EAP articles. It would be good to see a project do for EAP what editors (esp Awadewit) did for Mary Wollstonecraft: Set up a nice template, and work systematically through the basic biography and the major works. The project could also adopt some of the articles on history of genres that EAP effectively invented or particularly influenced (e.g., mystery). I'm not sure a project is needed for a specific writer, even EAP. --Lquilter (talk) 16:29, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Think this one might be too big for a task force so brought it here for discussion. Will try and rally support from common ER editors.

  • Even though it's long-running a task force should be sufficient. An article for the TV series; a list of episodes; a list of characters; a very few articles on individual episodes and individual characters that have received significant real-world coverage sufficient to justify separate articles. That is probably fewer than twenty articles altogether would be needed. Each article could be deep and rich rather than many, many separate small shallow articles like a database. --Lquilter (talk) 16:31, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Experimental art (Proposed rename “Contemporary music”)

Description (summary)
Project Experimental art would work to improve all pages related to experimental art or artists. This could include concert and popular music, theory (music or visual), literature, dance, theater, film, visual arts, architecture, and performance art.
Description (longer version)
This is a Wikiproject focusing on everything relating to experimental (or avant-garde) in the arts. This project would cover a huge number of some of the most overlooked pages on Wikipedia. Articles like 20th century classical music which is littered with “citation needed” tags, Modernist poetry an article composed of only four sentences, List of atonal pieces which is actually a list of several modern composers, 20th century concert dance which is only a stub, and Experimental theatre which is tagged for “tone not be appropriate for Wikipedia.” The range of Project Modernist art would cover pages describing concepts, techniques or theory’s, art movements, people, works of art, and lists (of artists or works).

This project now has its own page. Please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Contemporary music.

I’m thinking that perhaps I should have named this Experimental art to be more specific. . . As for time period, modernism or avant-guard as a philosophy hasn’t been around all that long. Perhaps it would be sufficient simply to define it as any art which is currently considered to contain an experimental element. --S.dedalus 01:07, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That’s true, I think Experimental art is a better name since this is really about all mediums (I was thinking Modernism. Modernist is wrong.). My way of looking at it is that this could be a subproject of Wikipedia:WikiProject Contemporary Art. Experimental and avant-guard art is a unique form of contemporary art because it is concerned with a philosophy of rejecting old traditions and experimenting with new methods, whereas there are many contemporary artists who focus exclusively on older ideas and styles. I also think there are enough problems with these pages that two projects would not be unnecessary. However, that’s what I’m gauging with this proposal. --S.dedalus 03:41, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Feminism

Description
A WikiProject for creating, maintaining and improving articles related to feminism and biographies of important feminists. Although there are WikiProjects that vaguely encompass this subject such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Gender Studies and Wikipedia:WikiProject LGBT studies, they don't specifically focus on the subject area. Wikipedia would benefit from sustained effort in this area. This listing is to find out how much interest there is to support such a WikiProject. Addendum: It should go without saying but this WikiProject is not to promote feminism or add feminist bias to articles but to provide neutral point of view additions and reliable sources. It should go without saying but obviously it does need to be said or someone is bound to misinterpret this effort as a form of proselytizing.

  • Sigh. Yes, I know. I wonder if there is any way around it beyond your suggestion for "NPOV steel" (which I like). Like any corner of Wikipedia, if such a project sets up a strong set of principles from the outset, emphasizing NPOV, reliable sources, etc., I think it will help remind project members to set the right Wikipedian priorities. Still, I do feel somewhat daunted by the undoubted uphill slog for this project and members. Pigman 06:20, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Explicit as possible, I guess. Address up-front that the project will attract people who have strong opinions (pro or con) on feminism, but that we assume personal views will be subordinated to NPOV (or something). List topics envisioned -- feminism and anti-feminism, because whenever there is an effort to write about a political issue, the anti's always want to be sure there is "balance" -- which is of course what we should strive toward, but all too often (in my experience) anti's want to insert original research, opinions, and overbalance articles with criticism. Building out templates for articles with good examples about how to incorporate criticism into the article, and citing policies, will be helpful. I wish I had brilliant ideas about how to get people who feel hostile towards an idea to work cooperatively on articles about that idea. --Lquilter (talk) 19:53, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm actually unclear about what you're asking Wrad? Why not try and work within the current projects (all of which have significant memberships)?
If you do go ahead Lquilter is right it will attract trolling just like WP:GS and WP:LGBT do. All in all I think WP:GS and WP:LGBT already cover feminism - but I'm open to being convinced of the need of another project--Cailil talk 02:52, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fictional Biographies WikiProject

Description
Seeing as the Biography WikiProject does not include any Fictional biography articles, I don't think this could work as a work group of that project. However, it could function as it's own WikiProject, run in a very similar way to the Biography project, except that it would only include fictional characters. It would include all manner of fictional characters with the possibility of eventually having work groups dedicated to certain categories (such as Fictional Characters in Film or Fictional Characters in Literature).

Scope

According to Wikipedia:Former featured articles, there are over 400 articles that at one time met the Featured article criteria. Many of these were demoted for minor reasons that could easily be fixed by a dedicated group of editors. This project aims to dramatically increase the number of featured articles by first focusing on those former FAs closest to meeting the criteria, and working its way to those in need of more help. This would be done through scheduled collaborations on said articles. While all editors are welcome to join, editors with experience creating FAs, especially those with strong copyediting skills and/or knowledge of MoS are most needed. There is no reason for wikipedia to have any "former" FAs. It should be top priority to maintain them. "Once an FA, always an FA." is the eventual goal of this project.

I think the criteria for determining what constitutes an FA may have changed over the years, and that is probably one of the primary reasons for there being so many former FAs. Nevertheless, I would welcome the existence of such a group, even if I, who have trouble doing even Start-Class articles, would be basically useless to it. John Carter 18:39, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's true, the criteria has changed, so some former FAs are nowhere near close to passing, but several are very close. I was also thinking that this project could be a "rescue squad" for article under FA review. Wrad 14:10, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree that any articles "were demoted for minor reasons that could easily be fixed", but applaud your efforts. Here is a list of articles that may need citation attention. It's not easy to cite someone else's work after the fact, but I wish your Project the best of luck. The Emsworth articles are a good place to start. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:21, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree that any articles "were demoted for minor reasons that could easily be fixed", but applaud your efforts. -- I'm getting this from a lot of people, and it's completely untrue. Take a look at Columbine Massacre and The Simpsons, both demoted for minor reasons that could easily be fixed. Quit saying it's impossible but that you applaud our efforts and sign up! Wrad 18:16, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the offer, but my hands are full trying to salvage featured status at WP:FAR. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:08, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A reminder note. Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Io (moon) has a reminder I usually put at the top for Raul; if he isn't made aware that an article is an WP:FFA and has already been on the main page (be sure to check), on promotion, he may add it back to WP:FA without noting that it's already been on the main page (I believe this happened with Pluto). Please remember to add this reminder for Raul if you bring any FFAs back to FAC, and to add a link to the FARC, so reviewers can see that all concerns have been addressed. When articles are re-promoted, they are moved to the re-promoted category at the bottom of WP:FFA, the overall tally doesn't change, but the re-promoted tally is incremented. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:08, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

One other thing that might work would be to notify the various projects which have an interest in an article that it is a former featured article. Many projects have a section of their project page listing their FAs, GAs, former FAs and GAs, and whatnot. It might be useful to get them a bit more actively involved as well. John Carter 20:59, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There already is a project page at Wikipedia:WikiProject Featured articles which deals with all featured articles, past and present. Maybe you all could do this work within that project. The page could probably use some improvement as well. John Carter 14:34, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That project is inactive, has 2 participants, and was created after this proposal was made. FunPika 01:46, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think we should make it bigger and active. How about we just all join that project with this as part of our goal? Wrad 20:23, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • This would be a very useful project. All too often articles, once brought to FA status, are effectively abandoned, or the subject of POV-pushing. Even basic template work needs to be done, to capture the version originally accorded FA status. Periodic re-reviews could be done to ensure articles are staying at quality. --Lquilter (talk) 16:33, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gerontology

Description
The purpose of this project group wold be to scrutinise articles such as those on gerontology, aging or senescence, and to ensure that they are up-to-date, accurate and cover an adequate range of ground. This could be an interdisciplinary venture, combining workers in psychology, sociology, biology, medicine, law, technology and religious studies, as well as any other fields that might relate to the study of human aging. An advantage of this project group would be that it would ensure certain articles do not become too narrowly focussed. For example, if one looks at aging, one sees that it is currently part of WikiProject: Biology but the studies of psychology and sociology are surely relevant to this article. Incidentally, gerontology is itself currently under multiple Wiki-projects - why don't we combine them to produce WikiProject: Gerontology?

Note:Because I tend to be more expodian that metapedian, I am not really one for joining Wikiprojects myself, but I still see that this project could be uesful. I believe that there are reasons why we might get some response if we contacted members of Wikiprojects in Biology, Psychology or Sociology. If this proposal is not responded to, I still think that the beginning of the talk-page at aging should be changed, so that this does not become the sole concern of WikiProject Biology but is also connected with sociology and psychology and members of projects in these two areas. There are, presumably, three articles here - one on each film. I'm not even sure a task force is needed for these, little yet a WikiProject. Surely the article talk pages would suffice. Phil Sandifer 23:38, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If I remember correctly, at one point it was the case that all Harvard students wrote their own biographies for the school's archives. If that's true, finding a way to use those archives to any degree would probably be very beneficial for a lot of articles. John Carter 22:15, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • This project, if it comes into existence, would provide a central point for all articles related to horses. It acknowledges the existence of the other extant projects which relate to horses, and expects to focus its attention on those articles which are not directly within the scope of any of the other extant projects. However, should any of those projects become inactive or deleted, this project would be available to provide at least support for those articles then. John Carter 20:50, 27 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think this is needed. Note to those who are interested, we already have Wikipedia:WikiProject Thoroughbred racing, Wikipedia:WikiProject horse training, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Horse breeds. These three could be somehow affiliated, though all three are already pretty big and definitely worth of being free-standing (and in fact have been for at least 18 months, if not longer). What we are doing is sort of creating a project hierarchy backwards (horse should have come first and then these existing ones spun off, but oh well. Someone did put the cart before the horse! (groan)). There is also cross-fertilization (if you will) with Wikipedia:WikiProject Agriculture and Wikipedia:Wikiproject mammals. Some horse articles are also tagged for Wikipedia:WikiProject Tree of Life and yet others have assorted sport tags on them. I don't know how the project hierarchy stuff works, but there are (rough guess) at least several hundred, if not 1,000 equine-related articles already in wiki, so a clearinghouse is probably in order. I support this project. But it is going to be a job! We need expertise and advice from wikipedians who have taken on things this big before! If we don't get it reined in, the thing could take the bit in its teeth and bolt! (FYI, I can contribute more bad puns as needed!) Montanabw(talk) 04:47, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think we definitely need this broader coverage, but I fail to see the need for four such projects and would like to see something done to combine them somehow. I particularly don't see the need for Wikipedia:WikiProject Horse breeds together with this project and would prefer to see that project's scope expanded. Still, you can count me in.--Doug.(talk contribs) 05:30, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've kinda been involved in the creation of a project or two. I can probably at least get the project page and associated materials started. Regretably, what with everything I've been involved with at various times, I'm probably not going to be the best person to look to to be involved in the active maintenance and upkeep of the project itself. John Carter 14:36, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I feel pretty strongly about keeping Horses and Horse breeds separate, one can be "kin" of the other. There are too many articles already for people working on those others projects to keep organized in what we have. I certainly wouldn't merge without their approval. I think if we have a project at all, a general "Horses" category would make for a better jumping-off point, but see no reason to merge these in...horses aren't just livestock in the way food animals are, they are also sporting atheletes, etc., really an entire lifestyle! Montanabw(talk) 17:08, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand the concern. Nobody's suggesting merging any of the Horse projects, existing or proposed, with Wikipedia:WikiProject Agriculture, they're logical children of several larger projects but should remain independent as a group.--Doug.(talk contribs) 04:29, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, if horse breeds were merged into horses, it would probably be merged in as a separate subpage of the main project page, basically just getting the name of the existing project page changed. It would also probably be able to use the horses banner and as a result hopefully get slightly more input into the articles in question. John Carter 14:07, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would submerge the Horse breeds project into a category. In fact, I think what most would-be projects need most at this point is better use of categories. --Una Smith (talk) 18:40, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I think that maybe expanding the scope out a little might be a good idea. Perhaps a project on the works of Lucas and Spielberg, individually or collectively, barring Star Wars which already has its own project, might be preferable as many of the individuals associated with Indiana Jones probably are relevant to some of those two gentlemen's other work as well. John Carter 18:47, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Firearms? Vehicles? Locations? I'm not sure why the proposal needs to incorporate all those topics. Surely the topic would be satisfied with articles on the major works and the major characters. --Lquilter (talk) 16:36, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Considering many/most of your articles will also be within the scope of Wikipedia:WikiProject Indiana, you might want to check with them about possibly becoming a task force or other related project. Most of the city projects of Australia use the WikiProject Australia banner, and receive separate assessments anyway, and having multiple projects use the same banner where possible is one way to help reduce the often excessive clutter of banners on several talk pages. John Carter 17:32, 27 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If that were the case, there would be only one WP, with everything else being a task force of that. There are enough articles out there for separation between Indianapolis and Indiana. The project would fall under the same veign as Atlanta's WP -JT 16:03, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Inter-religious content

Description
There are a number of articles which relate to religion which clearly deal with more than one religion. Unfortunately, the majority of the religion projects deal specifically with only a single religion, and may not be qualified to provide a fair view of a given inter-religious article. This proposed group would attempt to deal with these subjects by trying to bring together good editors familiar with a variety of religions who could try to hammer out a way to present all the faiths involved in these articles, in a fair, non-POV, accurate way. I acknowledge that this may be rather difficult to do, but that is all the more reason that the attempt should at least be made.

  • I've long been wanting to create a Wikipedia:WikiProject Philosophy of religion to unite theist and atheist Wikipedians who want to work on neutral and high quality articles on issues related to the existence of God. I'm currently very busy in real life, but I still wonder what people think about this idea. It's a bit related to inter-religious content, but the focus would be on the intersection of philosophy and theology, so it would be a sub-project of WikiProject Philosophy. Any comments? --Merzul 17:07, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Given that WikiProject Religion is not a large project in terms of members or frequency of postings to its forum. Suggest having one and only one place where issues of concern affecting other religions can be addressed. Not all Wikipedians interested in religion are also interested in inter-religion issues. Having multiple small and specialized task forces to address various sub-concerns would likely confuse general editors, who wouldn't know where to take a concern to, could lead to overlapping forums for the same issues, and could exclude essential points of view, resulting in administrative POV forks with folks of particular views coalescing into particular groups. Right now WikiProject religion, while not moribund, doesn't have such a large amount of activity as a forum for discussion of issues to make subdivision practical. Best, --Shirahadasha 16:22, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • Could the proposers of this project identify a single specific example of a problem that such a proposal could solve and why this approach could solve it better than present methods? Currently each religion more or less has autonomy over its own issues, with cooperation on obvious joing articles like Abraham and Bible. How would the proposed approach create an improvement? Best, --Shirahadasha 16:37, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
        • Saint contains material relevant to a variety of religions, but is to date tagged with the banners of few if any of them, leaving the remaining content handled by people who could easily misstate something. Also, there will be specific cases where, from for example my field of saints, a statement regarding the subject's previous religious affiliation, which might be non-Christian, could be stated in sources in a way which is less than completely clear in sources. This might be particularly relevant if that religion has no specific attendant WikiProject, and a lot of faiths qualify in that area. It would also allow for editors who are primarily interested in a given faith, which may or may not have its own separate project, to address these religion-specific matters, without also having to deal with articles dealing with Santeira, Bahai, and some of the other specific religions the parent project deals with. Kensington Court Gardens

Description
[Kensington Court Gardens is a large, late Victorian mansion block, completed in 1889, near

to Kensington Palace and Gardens. Despite its plain, red brick exterior, it has been home to one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. Kensington Court Gardens is most famously the residence of poet, critic and playwright, Thomas Stearns Eliot – T.S. Eliot. Eliot moved to No.3 Kensington Court Gardens in 1957, after his secret marriage to his secretary from Faber and Faber, (Esmé) Valerie Fletcher on the 10th January 1957. The marriage was criticised not only because it was kept a secret from all, but her parents, but at the time Eliot was 68 and Valerie only 30 years old. Despite the criticism and the age difference, it appears to have been the happiest time of Eliot’s life, the Oxford Dictionary of Biography stating he “attained a degree of contentedness that had eluded him all his life.” However, at the time Eliot’s health was already in decline and he died in the flat only eight years later, on the 4th January 1965. Mrs Valerie Eliot still lives at No.3 Kensington Court Gardens and is editor and guardian over his letters, many of which are still un-published. Another notable resident is The Kopman family, who have made their money in the property development and investment banking arenas. The location of today’s Kensington Court Place was formerly part of the Vallotton estate, dating back to the late 18th century. Kensington Court Place was originally known as Charles Street and renamed in 1908. The eastern side of Charles Street was the former site of open grounds, known as The Paddock. It was the home of the Kensington Lawn Tennis Club prior to being bought by local surveyor, Albert James Barker for building development in 1886. The mansion block, Kensington Court Gardens is believed to be designed by Henry W. Peck and built by Frederick Moir of Moir, Wallis and Company in 1887-9 in association with Albert Barker. Albert Barker was responsible for a large amount of the building development around Thackeray Street, Ansdell Street and Kensington Court Place and was responsible for much of the street layout that we see today. The Times first advertised flats for Kensington Court Gardens in January 1889 at between £195 and £250 per annum. Kensington Court Gardens first appears in the London Directory in 1889, listed with Moir Wallis & Co. Builders, with building works not completed. The first residents appear in the 1890 Directory, with flat No.1 again, with Moir Wallis & Co. Interestingly, during the 1890s a number of residents of Kensington Court Gardens are retired military men. The 1891 census shows residents General Alexander Silver, Lieutenant-Colonel Arnold Knight and Major- General James Black. The 1901 census and Royal Blue Book show other notable residents, including the builder Frederick Moir at No.7 and publisher Herbert Doubleday at No.9. Doubleday was responsible for the publishing of the Victoria History of the Counties of England and The Complete Peerage. Flat No.1 Kensington Court Gardens was originally the home of the building caretaker, listed in the 1891 census as Mr Charles Hall with his wife Emily. The 1901 census shows No.1 as the home of James E. Raybould, Hall Porter, with his wife Elizabeth. Sources: Melania Backe-Hansen]

  • The rationale for this proposal is that I have yet to see an organized collaboration in an area that I believe certainly needs one. First, many related articles are edited and contributed to by non-native English speakers. Their contribution is most certainly welcome, but articles in this case still need to be assessed for style and syntax, to say nothing of NPOV. Second, certain important discussions need to take place regarding the prospective re-organization of a number of articles that may be too broad in scope or require merging with other articles. Third, linkspam and even articles inappropriately pointing to websites or resources not necessary for reference have run rampant in this area (Teaching English as a foreign language is a vulnerable target for linkspam to ESL websites, and at least a few articles for ESL websites and schools have been deleted in the past for non-notability). To these and other concerns, a major effort is necessary to improve the quality of articles that fall under the scope of language education. --Roehl Sybing 17:34, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Description : This WikiProject would be for the improvement and standardisation of Mobile Phone articles. Many of the existing articles lack category boxes and there is a distinct mix of info boxes across the entire range. I therefore propose a project be created to offer standards for all mobile phone articles.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes

Description
I've noticed that Mystery Science Theater 3000 has an episode list, but not pages on individual episodes—only brief details on the movies riffed. I think that the episodes themselves should have pages (and, judging by the discussion board for the episode list that several people agree. There are absolutely no details on the host segments on the episode list, and it would get rather cluttered if they were added. Not to mention that details on how each episode moves the plot along are not even mentioned on the episode list. Let's face it, it's not really fair to call it an "episode list". It should probably be moved to List of movies riffed on Mystery Science Theater 3000 or something.
Alas, that's not my point. If enough people are interested, I think that such a project might be useful. After all, the show ran for ten years—I'm going to need a bit of help!

I believe he was referring to the "What a Page Should Contain" section, which specifically indicates that an article should have information on, and I quote, "
  • How the episode was received by critics
  • Information on production and broadcasting of the episode
  • Real-world factors that have influenced the work or fictional element." If any given episode doesn't contain enough information on such content to merit a separate article, there is a very real chance that those episodes will have any articles on them deleted as failing to meet WP:NOTABILITY requirements. John Carter 16:36, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. I must have missed that.
  • How the episode was received by critics--There is plenty of info on this...some episodes met critical aclaim amoungst fans, other episodes were critized because they felt whatever film didn't deserve the MST3K treatment...etc., ect., ect.
  • Information on production and broadcasting of the episode--Some episodes had higher budgets than others. Some episodes had to be pulled from reruns because of right's issues. Some episodes are lost or had been lost. The list goes on and on.
  • Real-world factors that have influenced the work or fictional element.--Each episode contained a movie that had been released into the real world at some point or another, and each film was not only featured in the episode but inspired most of the host segments.
Hope this takes care of all doubts. Tenk you veddy much. --Wack'd Talk to me!Admire my handiwork! 20:20, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nautical Project

Description
I have noticed there is no broad parent Nautical project. The idea has been very briefly discussed at Portal:Nautical. There seem to be areas that are falling through the cracks, like say, Sailing which is really just outside several projects, doesn't fall under Ships except for a limited portion of the historical aspects and the tall ships still afloat, "small craft" in general which are on the margins of Maritime Trades as so many are now purely recreational, Historical Novels like the Aubrey-Maturin series series and the Hornblower Series which are not top of the list at Novels Project or their authors which are in the same situation at Biographies Project. Both could use more attention. Most of these areas have little coverage or very few editors and need information and badly need sources. A few, like Sailing, appear to have gotten out of control and could probably stand a few new editors to at least comment on how things might be brought back into focus as an Encyclopedia. This would be a general parent project but with a primary intent of covering all those areas that the current active projects don't? Certainly not intended to step on the toes of those who are working hard on talking about military vessels, merchant shipping topics, or other things that are clearly within existing projects.

Why would this not fall under the existing WP:Turkey as a workgroup? Chris 09:45, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion, it would be nice if we have a specialized squad to work on Ottomans. This is not just about the main article of the empire. It is also about the rulers (Sultans, Askeris etc.), social structure and events, culture and war history. Turkey project can be more effective if we take the responsibility of six centuries from their shoulders. Then they can work on present day issues and modern structure of Turkey. By the way, we can reach this goal by creating a specialized team under the Wikiproject Turkey if people want it that way. Deliogul 13:21, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A specialized WikiProject would assist us greatly in focusing on the Ottoman topics and coordinating our efforts towards improving them. This would not be accomplished as easily within the framework of the Turkish project, and we would be doing them a disservice by distracting them from their improvements while we try to conduct ours. --Hemlock Martinis 19:02, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is a great idea, and one that will benefit the article, and its branch topics tremendously. As for the WP:Turkey suggestion, I think a differentiated Ottoman project is the way to go. Looking over both Turkey and Ottoman Empire you will see that the edit history of both articles contains numerous disputes wherein editors cannot make the distinction between an Ottoman timeline (and definition), and a Republic of Turkey timeline. Hiberniantears 17:25, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There already is an extant Wikipedia:WikiProject Former countries, which already has a few task forces dedicated to individual countries. I think they may be receptive to taking this group on as a task force if the degree of interest justifies it. John Carter 17:29, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I believe this is a good idea, and I hope the existence of this project – whether on its own or as a subproject or task force of WikiProject Former countries – will contribute to attracting quality editors for this important area. Some form of liaison with WikiProject History also seems in order. (I'm not listing myself above because I do not have access to the kind of sources needed for an active role, but I'll be happy to copy edit what I see can be improved, and perhaps from time to time signal problems I spot.)  --Lambiam 23:57, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I definitely think this is a good idea. There's no reason people from WP:Turkey (and WP:WPFC) can't join in on such a WikiProject, after all. — OwenBlacker (Talk) 08:33, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • A specialized task force within WikiProject Former Countries would give this effort autonomy to focus on the Ottoman Empire, but also to coordinate with other WikiProjects and task forces. In that role it would be able to take the initiative of developing provisions on how WPFC should handle the various aspects of historical empires. There has generally been a lack of coordination between sets of articles related to different former countries, and when it comes to empires there are many additional levels of complexity to take into account. By associating this effort to the WikiProject Former Countries there is a better chance of achieving a lasting structure to the Wikipedia content that relates to the Ottoman Empire, and quite possibly set the standards for other empires. -- Domino theory 15:04, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So, how many people is needed if we want to form such a Wikiproject? Who will give the permission to do so? Will we form it? There are many questions to be asked as the time passes. Deliogul 20:50, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There isn't a hard and fast rule. However, it generally works best if a group has five or more members to be recognized as a task force/work group, 10 for an entirely separate project. While technically it is possible to create things with smaller numbers than that, the results often don't turn out as well, and projects often wind up being deleted, tagged as {{inactive}}, or turned into task forces of other projects anyway. I been looking around some of the operating system articles, I would say a lot of them could do with some serious work. I know this is already covered in the scope of the an existing wikiproject on computing, but I think it could do with its own WikiProject, owing to the amount of information people might want to know on operating systems and their development, and the fact this is a fairly specialist area. Also operatinhg systems are fairly important thing in the modern world that really do make the modern world go round, on the grounds that they are essential for computers to operate, and computers are key to our modern life. Wikipedia:WikiProject Comic strips, though not very active right now, covers pretty much all the same territory. Maybe it could be made a task force and, maybe, help revitalize the parent project? John Carter 22:43, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair point. Since there doesn't seem to be any interest, perhaps I'll look into that. I personally feel that a WikiProject is justified for Peanuts, as it was the longest running and most popular comic strip of all time, and there are plenty of articles on Peanuts on WP. But if the interest isn't there, what can one do? :P Thanks for the suggestion! :) faithless (speak) 01:34, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So far as I can tell, there's only one article we currently have about pit bulls per se, 12 listed owners of pit bulls who have their own articles, 2 individuals (Michael Vick and DMX) who've been charge on related cruelty charges, and 2 articles on real or fictional pit bulls. I'm not sure that's really even remotely enough cause to set up an entire separate project page, templates, and whatever else needs to go into the creation of a project. Also, Wikipedia:WikiProject Dogs and Wikipedia:WikiProject Dog breeds already deal with the subject. Maybe you'd be better off creating and developing a larger number of articles on the subject first before creating an entirely separate project. John Carter 21:49, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps I could create a taskforce instead? The wikiproject Dog breeds seems to be lacking ii the pitbull breed...

Sorry, I was wrong. In addition to Pit Bull, we also have articles on at least seven more specific breeds, according to the first paragraph of that article. And, to create a task force of another project, you'd have to get the agreement of the main project. You could move this section down to the "task forces" section and see if there was enough interest, though. John Carter 23:22, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pixar Animation Studios have created some of the most memorable films of modern times, but its article and that of its films require a lot of work. I wasn't sure if this should have been a task force, but since we're looking to improve at least eight articles (and more, as the films are released) I felt that was sufficient to warrant a project. RMS Oceanic 09:13, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pixar has quite a few articles, and it needs its own WikiProject. I know almost everything about all the Pixar films, long and short, and would be more than glad to join. Since Disney has nothing to do with Pixar, it should not be a part of the Disney WikProject, and it shouldn't be a part of WikiProject Films, because that is way too broad. I would be more than happy to join. A•N•N•A hi! 18:10, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Anna, I disaggree. Disney has lots do do with Pixar. However, I do aggree that Pixar should have its own wikiproject. I agree with SUIT that it might work out best as a child of Wikiproject Disney. Lets discuss...--wpktsfs 03:02, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So how about the Pixar Taskforce?--$UIT 00:40, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Iºm not sure about taskforce. I think it would be better as its own project, albeit a child project of Disney. Basically, noticible enough for a Project, and linked enough with Disney to be a child project. Thoughts? RMS Oceanic 09:44, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It needs it's own WikiProject since some of their short films are not Disney branded. Martini833 21:27, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There's always Wikipedia:WikiProject American Animation as a group with which this group could associate. And, considering the current scope of the project is, as stated above, eight articles, I really question whether at this time there is sufficient content to justify an entirely separate WikiProject. John Carter 22:30, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's more than eight, really. It just so happens those eight are the highest priority of the project. There's also the dozen or so short films they've created, character pages and current and past employees of note. We woudn't be the largest project, but I reckon we'd have plenty to keep us occupied. And remember: more films will come out each year. RMS Oceanic 06:33, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You know maybe if someone tracks down all Pixar articles and add them to the project list then we could have the project up and running quickly. I know for sure they have 10 films, 15 or so short films, countless character and director pages, and some uncategorizable pages. So i would say it amounts to (at least) 30 to 50 pages. That is definitely enough for a WikiProject. (addition) There could be a WikiProject for all Pixar movies since they have sooooo many articles each so why is a Pixar project such a big problem? Martini833 20:59, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • It isn't that it's a problem. It's that there already are a number of full Projects out there, and that it's both easier on the people (me) maintaing the directory, and probably easier on the members of the project itself, if they allow an existing project to handle the "paperwork" of the project (assessments, banner, potentially peer review and collaboration) and allow the members of the more focused group more opportunity to focus their attention on the content. The only real functional differences between a task force and a WikiProject are the name and the banner on the talk page. It's already the case that many of the full banners are being hidden in the {{WikiProject Banners}}, so that functionally leaves the only real difference the name. Personally, as someone who was proposed and/or created three task forces for Wikipedia:WikiProject Christianity, (Iglesia ni Cristo, and Methodism and Baptist on this page) it's easier and less time-consuming to create a task force than a full, stand-alone project, particularly if, as in this case, the proposal basically deals exclusively with content which is already within the scope of another, existing project. John Carter 14:36, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This should be a taskforce, not a project in my opinion. As the note at the top says: If the scope of your project idea is very narrow (such as a TV show, music band, video game, etc) then you should start a task force of an existing project instead of starting a whole new WikiProject. Making only a few number of films isn't that big of a scope for a project. Why is that hard to understand? Instead of making tons of tiny projects: use taskforces, then the related project can help out and so on. RobJ1981 22:13, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  1. I think this would be a good project for a focused group to work on so that current political scandals and controversies have accurate information and are done in a NPOV way. Because so many people rely upon wikipedia to get access to current controversial information, it is important that we make sure to provide the best information we can. Remember 15:25, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have time to do this now so someone else please take charge. Remember 15:31, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I believe a group focused on political scandal has a very strong possibility of becoming a de facto decider of fact and the potential to become a POV hit-squad. I think the idea is well intentioned, but I just see too many potential problems with a group dedicated to scandals & controversies (groupthink, POV, infighting, etc.). I respectfully decline the offer and hope that this project does not meet with the fate I predicted. Good luck! /Blaxthos 16:41, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • I think it will be just the opposite of that, Blaxthos. The purpose, as I see it, is to identify when there is a controversy and then to prevent a Wikipedia article from trying to "decide" facts. I've been a Wikipedian longer than 99.99% (I am user #188), and the perennial problem has been a groupthink which has the effect of making Wikipedia endorse certain POVs. If we try, we can counter this trend. --Uncle Ed 19:15, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • I see your point, but looking from other side of the looking glass, I would hate to see this group become the self-appointed "guardian of what's right." I've seen (most notably in AfD discussions) a particular organized group or wikiproject able to organize enough support / likeminded editors to dominate WP:CONSENSUS discussions (becoming the de facto authority). High minded ideals aside, the obvious solution would seem to be what Lincoln did in the civil war days -- include enough viewpoints in your council that none shall dominate. I think, however, that such a group which consciously forms to become the deciding body is inherently dangerous. I'm glad to see its stewardship in experienced / capable hands.  :-) I still must respectfully decline. /Blaxthos 19:46, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • In my opinion there are probably more "controversy" articles than we really need (at least in certain high-profile areas, like American politics), and I hope that this project could narrow these down and improve their quality, rather than see a proliferation of new "controversy" articles.--Pharos 19:42, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think that it is a very good idea, if the main focus is on addressing POV and source issues, but it depending on how it runs it could be quite vulnerable in the ways User:Blaxthos mentioned. I do however think it's worth the attempt. baby_ifritah 00:56, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I feel that focusing only on widely-accepted past political scandals may satisfy the POV issues discussed here. Published history has its own process of peer review. The humble and well-intentioned Wikipedian has a better chance of avoiding the specter of POV with the judgment of history and the reputation of its authors on the other end of the scale. Pop music

Description
A WikiProject for focusing on all forms of pop music (not to be confused with popular music). Within its scope would be mainstream and indie pop music; regional scenes such as J-pop, K-pop, and C-pop; and pop standards. I think a WikiProject would be quite helpful since the state of our pop articles is currently not that great, and many of the articles are incredibly listy without real information on the songs (see a recent example). This sounds like a nice idea, but I'm worried that the genre- and artist-specific music WikiProjects may be taking away from the centralised efforts at WP:WP MUSIC, WP:ALBUM and WP:SONG to improve Wikipedia's coverage of music. I do think that pop music articles tend to be poorer — often significantly so — than others, though. Extraordinary Machine 13:53, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WP:MUSIC, WP:MUSICIAN, WP:ALBUM, and WP:SONG are already great resources for music articles. For this project, I was thinking along the lines of Wikipedia:WikiProject Alternative music, which seems to be a pretty effective collaboration. Obviously there's no point in duplicating the information at WP:ALBUM and WP:SONG. But it'd be good to have a more focused noticeboard of sorts. WP:MN isn't always very responsive to posts, so it would be good to have one tailored to some of the issues that pop music articles face. I've seen a lot of inflation of sales figures and chart positions; unsourced articles predicting next singles (at this point, nearly every song from The Sweet Escape has had an article); very, very listy articles with little information about the song itself; and POV, gushing prose that sounds like it comes from fansites. It seems like it'd be a good idea to have some users that could keep an eye on these things when they come up. 17Drew 19:54, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pregnancy and childbirth

Description

Articles on pregnancy and childbirth are surprisingly lacking in both quality and quantity. I've been working on them a bit, but could use help. Many topics are not clinical or entirely clinical in nature and tend to be neglected by other hard-working projects such as WP:MED. I am not sure if it would be better to create a task force within WP:MED or a full-fledged WikiProject. I have created a couple of draft pages in my user space (sample project page, navigation template). --Ginkgo100talk 15:22, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • This is an important topic and it's been embarrassing that it hasn't had better treatment before now. I'd like to suggest also that in addition to medical & biological aspects, this project would really help deal with the issues of pregnancy and childbirth on other fields -- arts, literature (Reproduction and pregnancy in science fiction), mytho-religion (virgin births); social aspects of pregnancy & childbirth (Pregnancy Discrimination Act, surrogate pregnancy, "illegitimacy" which although nominally about the child is fundamentally about maternal marital status at childbirth); religious & cultural taboos and rituals -- just to give a few examples. --Lquilter (talk) 16:07, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Academic usage of the term "criticism" -- which is what one would expect from an encyclopedia -- suggests concepts like literary criticism, basically, analysis. If the proposal is to gather together critiques of the Quran, then it should be so labeled. I am confused at this point what is intended. --Lquilter (talk) 14:08, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

a taskforce within Wikiproject:Islam may be more appropriate. if (academic) literary criticism is the topic, then this is pretty much known as tafsir (exegesis). i think it would be a nice idea to have a Qur'an taskforce under Wikiproject Islam (as we already have a Hadith taskforce), and that would obviously include analysis, compilation, and a whole variety of topics. Description
In 1848, liberal, nationalist, idealistic and republican revolutions swept across Europe. All the revolutions eventually failed, but nevertheless, the years of 1848-49 were a monumental turning point in the history of Europe, and their repercussions are being felt to this very day. I am terribly dismayed that Wikipedia's coverage of these revolutions is so poor and I appeal to all Wikipedians interested in the history of Europe to join in this project. Next year marks the 160th anniversary, and I for one would like to see our set of 1848 articles vastly improved by that time.

Sealand

Description
This WikiProject would be called WikiProject Sealand. Information on the Principality of Sealand has enough coverage on Wikipedia that it should have its own WikiProject. This WikiProject would improve Sealand articles, as not all the information on the Principality has been added to Wikipedia and the Principality of Sealand was once a featured article. This WikiProject could bring that article back to featured article status. I noticed Malta has its own WikiProject and is part of WikiProject European Microstates - I thought Sealand should have its own WikiProject.

There has been confusion as to whether Sealand is a microstate or a micronation. There are sources supporting both microstate and micronation status, and the Principality of Sealand article is already part of WikiProject European Microstates and WikiProject Micronations. Because of this continuous confusion - I have thought of a solution:

  1. The first task: At Talk:Principality of Sealand#The first sentence the dispute over the Principality's status and how it affects NPOV is ongoing - but is almost finished, and the article will represent both views fairly. This dispute will become a guideline for all Sealand articles and for WikiProject Sealand.
  2. The second task is to create the WikiProject. This way there will be no disputes between those who support Sealandic micronation status and Sealandic microstate status because of the guideline.

Once the solution takes place, all Sealand articles will be NPOV and will represent both statuses. Onecanadasquarebishopsgate (talk) 14:25, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Any suggestions of anything similar to a WikiProject for Sealand? Onecanadasquarebishopsgate (talk) 19:32, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Considering I see only nine extant articles in the Category:Sealand, I seriously question whether there is enough content to justify a separate project, or probably even task force. I believe that the Wikipedia:WikiProject Micronations already deals with all the articles in that category, I would think that simply taking advantage of the existing infrastructure of that project would probably be the best way to go, until and unless the amount of pages relative to the subject increases rather significantly.
Yet Sealand is also part of Wikipedia:WikiProject European Microstates, Sealand cannot rely just on WIkiProject Micronations - isn't there a seperate method, similar to that of a WikiProject, that can be created for Sealand articles? Onecanadasquarebishopsgate (talk) 21:53, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You might want to tell the European Microstates project that, as I don't think that they have specifically included it in their scope yet. And there probably are ways to create a task force/work group, but it would probably require more than nine articles, which is all Sealand currently has, to justify introducing all the changes into the EM project and others required to make it a separate group. If you get the five interested participants to create a separate project/work group, though, that would justify creating a separate project. But it would probably need at least 5 participants for a subproject and 10 participants for a separate project. John Carter (talk) 22:22, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Seriously, I don't think you need a WikiProject here at all, if your goal is to get an FA. Sad to say but most (by no means all) WikiProjects don't do a lot to create Featured content; rather they plaster templates everywhere, create a load of "rules", and then piss off! If it's a Featured Article you're after, you'd probably be best advised to hunt around for some expert writers and editors to help you, rather than micronation fans who will want to write in-universe and fill the articles with cheese. Also agree with the comment that this topic is too small to justify a WikiProject and is already in the scope of the Micronations project. Just my 2c. --kingboyk (talk) 13:24, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I hate to say he's probably right about that above. I'm probably one of the worst "plasterers" out there, and you can see how many GAs and FAs I've created: The big goose egg (0). A few others, particularly bots, have been guilty of that sort of work too, although none come to mind right now. If you wanted to, though, you might be able to persuade the real writers at the Micronations project to try to help you with the article. I think many of them have said it is one of their most important articles, and they might be willing to work with you to help improve it, particularly as it's already one of their best articles and will probably be the easiest one to bring to GA or FA status. • Much better as a task force if even that is necessary. Each episode does not need its own entry. Wikipedia is not a directory of TV shows, and there is simply not going to be sufficient real world scholarship or news coverage of every episode. This topic should have at most a few articles: One on the TV show (its coverage, actors & directors & other people, ratings, general premise, and so on); one on the episode list; and -- maybe -- one character list. None of the individual characters have significant real-world notability as individual characters to need a separate entry. --Lquilter (talk) 16:14, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Although I started articles on transpersonal ecology and other transpersonal disciplines, my background is in psychology, and I would really appreciate an expert on business studies to update the article on transpersonal business studies. This project, by its interdisciplinary focus, could help to ensure that a number of people in different fields contribute to these articles, to escape an exclusive focus on psychology. As one will see if one looks at the histories of most of these articles, I tend to be the only person who edits most of these articles, and I would like a more co-operative venture in editing them. This group could also be useful in edits to related articles, such as those on mysticism, Carl Jung, William James, Abraham Maslow or altered states of consciousness. Compare Automobile and Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobiles to see the worth of a project which draws people in to the breadth of the field. – Kieran T (talk) 17:15, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with the main article about trucks. However, if you compare with the coverage of automobiles, aircrafts and trains, there are surprisingly few articles about various truck models. To be honest I also find most articles on truck manufacturers rather thin (example). Of course this won't be solved by just adding a new project, but a project will help make new articles more conform and thereby of grater value to the readers. It will also be easier for users to add new information or new articles if there are suitable templates, like infoboxes, to pick from. Rotten Stone 17:47, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Following the example link I see that Unimog is well overdone compared to the other models...
I miss some more country-specific details on rules etc. to the truck-article. About models I see that Volvo is even worse, I actually started up one model with a photo only in the hope that sby would feel provoked to write the text to it (since I don't have the faintest idea of model history - I only drive the things). My problem on a truck project would be that
  1. I have a work without computer
  2. I have 2 small kids taking a lot of my home time
  3. I work mostly at the da:Wiki, especially when it comes to technical articles, since my school-english didn't include technical terms.
Anyway I think a project could help this subject, but I am afraid I cant help as much as I would like to :-( --G®iffen 17:14, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies, that is more a short term aim rather than the scope of the project.Traditional unionist 12:12, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Given the current dispute over Northern Irish politics, I wonder whether this is the best proposal, or whether a WikiProject on Northern Irish politics would be more productive? I'm aware that Unionism is broader than that, but Unionism in Northern Irish politics would presumably be a major focus of this project. Such a project might, potentially, help further discussion and a NPOV in this often controversial field. Please note that I'm not arguing against this proposal, just investigating an idea. Warofdreams talk 17:19, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree entirely. I think it would be very beneficial, remember the members don't need to be unionists! What's unhealthy is to raise these sort of issues before you've seen it in operation. Does the Irish Republicanism project cause trouble? Apparently not, so I hardly think this one would. --Counter-revolutionary 17:24, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm specifically not saying that this project wouldn't be beneficial. I suspect that it probably would be. All I'm doing is offering a suggestion for an alternative or additional possibility. I would support both proposals. They're not mutually exclusive and there's no reasons why we couldn't have both projects going simultaneously. Valenciano 21:32, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I would be interested in this especially the 1922-1973 period, as I have added alot of info to existing bio's on members of the former NIHOC.--Padraig 21:57, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, an umbrella for the "two" camps, would be useful, I believe - exchange of information, people, energy, related drives, etc. - not to mention keeping the peace by ensuring that two opposing camps don't emerge. --sony-youthpléigh 10:49, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Great, it seems there is some interest in both proposals. I'll put my name to this one, and unless someone else does it first, I'll put in a proposal for a Northern Irish politics WikiProject. Warofdreams talk 13:34, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Warofdreams, I would support a Northern Ireland politics Wikiproject, but not a Northern Irish one, that is devisive, I would also support an Unionist or Irish Unionist wikiproject which I think would be beneficial to Wikipedia.--Padraig 20:17, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You object to the word Irish? That is objecting to proper grammar!Traditional unionist 20:22, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No I object to a Unionist campaign to protray the people of Northern Ireland as northern Irish as if they are a seperate nationality from the Irish population.--Padraig 21:50, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well alas that's not for you to say - indeed there is a lot of evidence to say that the Northern Irish identity is increasing above British and Irish amongst both communities. Regardless, this has enough support now doesn't it?Traditional unionist 12:36, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But Wikipedia is not a soapbox to promote a political campaign, and the name of the project should reflect that.--Padraig 21:40, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Quite so. Which is why it makes more sense to use the grammatically correct Northern Irish.Traditional unionist 22:00, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The proposed Wikiproject would be for Northern Ireland Politics, why would you support a name that is devisive unless you intend to exclude editors that don't share a Unionist POV on Northern Ireland, wikiprojects are intended to help editors work together to further Wikipedia not cause division.--Padraig 22:07, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The divisiveness of such a name is tenuous in the extreme. And thus far, you are the only pedant to have aired a negative view.Traditional unionist 22:09, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
One doesn't have to support unionism to help out with this project of course! --Counter-revolutionary 23:07, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to me that since Utopianism is not, as some think, a mere subset of science fiction, but instead covers a wider variety of political philosophies, and stretches from Plato to the modern day, we should have a project focused on it.Rabidwolfe 00:18, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly. I note however that the Category:Utopias and all its subcategories only has about 300 articles in toto, and I wonder whether that's enough for an entirely separate project. John Carter 00:26, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's one thing I'd like to work on - that category could be radically expanded if we started including (and creating) more articles on utopian communities, philosophies and thinkers. Why is there no sub-category for Utopianists like Edward Bellamy or even occasional utopianists like Charles Dana or William Dean Howells, etc.? It seems to me that the Category: Utopias could easily be three times the current size if we just put some effort into it. I just wish I had the time. I'm going to do as much as I can, but I don't have world enough and time to do it all. Rabidwolfe 02:56, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Even if this were simply a project about the literary movement, it would be needed. Although "adopted" by "SF", utopian literature is a quite distinct literary form, and has significant relationships with political thought. It seems this is also intended to cover intentional communities, which are also in great need of attention. --Lquilter (talk) 16:11, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly. The idea is to expand the concept of Utopia on the Wiki, and intentional communities and other Utopian experiments/communes/etc. are definitely part of that. Glad to have you on board! Rabidwolfe (talk) 21:33, 28 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I would strongly suggest moving the project page to your userspace until such time as it gets enough members to become viable. Otherwise, it could be forgotten over time, if it gets no input, and ultimately wind up deleted as so many other projects which incorrectly assume people will join have been. John Carter (talk) 00:08, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's ridiculous. Setting it up in userspace gets less attention - besides the hassles of trying to lay down decent infrastructure then shifting it all to project space. Though I know what you mean, my first project attempt bombed, but I think the main reason projects like this fail is attempting to cater to a very narrow scope and not promoting the project. Obviously this project has huge scope and will serve as a central organization and direction point for sub-projects. -Pumpmeup 20:36, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is also the established procedure in cases like this. Projects that are inactive in wikipedia space get nominated for deletion. Projects in user space don't as often or as quickly. John Carter (talk) 15:31, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As stated about"there are two notable pages", which is enough to warrant a WikiProject, however I have counted them all again, there are ten, Harry and the Potters, Harry and the Potters (album), Voldemort Can't Stop the Rock!, A Magical Christmas of Magic with Harry and the Potters and Wizardly Friends and Magical Singing Creatures, Power of Love (Harry and the Potters album), Scarred for Life, Harry and the Potters' split 7" with the Zambonis, The Enchanted Ceiling, Harry and the Potters discography and Draco and the Malfoys. Also, Portal:RuneScape is a complete portal with only three articles. Aswell as all this, further bands should also be notable, The Parselmouths, The Remus Lupins for two, aswell as a Wizard Rock music genre page. Hpfan9374 (talk) 05:58, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Task forces/Work groups

There are advantages to proposing a new group as a task force of an existing project. Generally, task forces require fewer members to be effective and do not have the same degree of required project maintenance, as much of that is taken on by the parent project. If you would like to set up a new group specifically to function as a task force of another project, please list it below.

With any luck it would be a subproject of that project, as well as of the Biography project, so it wouldn't be so much duplication of effort as concentration of effort of some editors on biographical articles specifically. WP:MILHIST, among others, is already involved with several seemingly successful "joint" subprojects. John Carter 18:39, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really feel the need for a separate subproject/taskforce, given the history of unsucessful ones we have (a few them have even a redlinked talkpage yet!) and the subject, that can already be covered by the main project which is instead clearly alive and well. As Oldelpaso noted, there's really no need for effort duplication. --Angelo 11:10, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Calling American football football is sticky enough when you are just referring to the United States, but when you bring in other countries (in this case, Canada), it really gets sticky. I think if you are going to have a project for this, you should broaden the scope to include ALL American football players. I'm not familiar with worldwide American football participation but I do know this would include NFL Europe players. I don't know how many articles this would add. This way, the project would simply be named American football players. Also, what is the precedent for a subgroup of a subgroup? Could this be a subgroup of WP:BIO/Sports & games? And for full disclosure, I am a member of WP:CFB.↔NMajdantalk 17:10, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • That's why I called this North American football, because of the differences between the Canadian and United States games. However, as many of us know, it is often the case when a player of one game goes to another. Warren Moon, Joe Theisman and Vince Ferragamo come to mind. The scope was described as it is to include all those who have played the game of Canadian and/or United States football in any of its forms, including AFL, NFL (which would include NFL Europa), CFL, USFL, WFL, Arena football leagues, college versions of the games, and all the other variant forms of these games. And, for what it's worth, it was intended that this be, in some form, a subproject of Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography. However, given the breadth of the current Sports biography work group, I thought a more focused group dealing specifically with football might be ultimately a bit more successful. For purposes of full disclosure myself, I am a member of, among other things, the WP:CFL and WP:BIO. John Carter 17:18, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I had earlier wanted to propose a task force for the cinema of Thailand, but even as a task force, the scope was pretty narrow. By expanding it to cover Southeast Asia, it groups together several smaller industries. Additionally, several editors working on the films from one Southeast Asian country are also likely to be contributing to articles about films from other Southeast Asian countries.

A proposed task force page has been started here, where interested editors may also sign up. — WiseKwai 11:56, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is a very noble Idea, but I dont see it working. sry Phoenix741 23:40, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, Phoenix. I can see where you are coming from, and this is a thing I hear very often. However, it must be understood that vandals of Wikipedia aren't really on a vendetta to destroy the 'pedia, or that they hate Wikipedia, and are trying to bring it down. In most or all cases, they are bored, and need something to do with their time, or perhaps they crave attention on an international scale. When they are warned to stop, this just encourages them to keep going, so they can get warned again, or blocked, and receive even more attention. Either way, kind and very patient editors can go up to them and say that if they have time to kill, they can gain a lot more from contributing to the encyclopedia than vandalizing it. They need to be told that, if they contribute constructively, they will be loved and embraced by the community. After all, with vandals, it's not about assuming good faith, but about not assuming bad faith. They don't hate the wiki--they just need something to do. That's where this task force comes in. Happy editing, Arky¡Hablar! 01:14, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I get what your saying, I really do, and I respect the idea, just I am not sure if they will get the message, and then they may go to vandalizing your user page. I would joint, just I have no patients for them 8-/. I hope this works, I really hope it does and I wish you the best of luck, but I can see this ending badly.Phoenix741 01:25, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, then I thank you at least for your moral support; it is much appreciated. There is always the fear of a terrible end to all this, but if it means that maybe even only one vandal gets the message, I'll be satisfied. Then, at least, it's one less user to have no patience with =P Thanks again for your comments, they are much appreciated, Arky¡Hablar! 01:34, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It seems like a good idea, perhaps you should leave a message at CVU page and the WP:VANDALISM page to gain a broader view of what the community thinks. --Hdt83 Chat 08:19, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Arky I really don't see this working out. I mean, let's face it: some people enjoy destroying the work of others simply because it can be fun to garner a negative reaction out of them. And who can say they haven't laughed at someone when that someone was mad? Good luck, but don't get your hopes up. --MKnight9989 13:53, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, MKnight, I wholeheartedly agree. The main reason vandals vandalize is because they crave attention for their "handiwork". However, this does not in any way mean they are deliberately destroying the work of others merely for the sake of destruction. If, through patience and kindness, they can understand that they'll receive even more attention by constructively contributing, there is no doubt in my mind they can be reformed. Just take a look here and see the progress that's been made already. Imagine how big this list could be with this taskforce in operation. That's the kind of thing worth working for. Arky¡Hablar! 22:29, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Most vandals are just school age people of little intelligence. There might be the odd one that could contribute something useful, but I think for most of them editing Wikipedia seriously would increase rather than reduce their boredom. I don't think we should be wasting time with them, I don't see that it's worth the effort. If I see something I can reasonably call blatant vandalism, I give them the bv template then have them blocked if they continue. If I see people giving vandals soft warnings for deliberate or continued vandalism I often override them myself with a higher level warning. It's nice that you want to help them but I just don't think it's worth it, both because there is little to be gained and much to be lost, both in terms of our time and the delay in blocking that will allow more vandalism to occur. Richard001 08:40, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Again, Arky, not every vandal is an attention-whore. Some people enjoy destroying things. Some people are naturally malicious. others just enjoy badgering others. In school these people are called bullies. --MKnight9989 12:21, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, MKnight, not every vandal seeks attention; some simply enjoy destruction. However, these extreme cases are in no way equal in number to those in which the vandal merely seeks attention. Secondly, to address Richard's concerns, in my opinion, it is never a waste of time to help someone, even if you don't think you'll succeed. Also, there is much to be gained from another constructive contributor, and little to be lost if they refuse. After all, as you said, you can upgrade their warnings, have them blocked, or any other sort of punishment if they continue their vandalism. If the correct effort is put in, there is much to be gained from a reformed vandal, but, yes, I understand your argument. Arky¡Hablar! 01:18, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You know, you say vandals are bored and need something to do. Well, tell them to edit wikipedia productively. That's what I do when I'm bored. Smartyllama 17:45, 27 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Transpersonal Studies

Description: As with my above proposal to have WikiProject Gerontology, this would be an interdisciplinary project. It might seem strange to propose a project group to oversee transpersonal psychology and related topics such as altered states of consciousness, but there are now articles in Wikipedia such as those on transpersonal ecology, transpersonal anthropology and transpersonal business studies - and I seem to be the only person to edit most of these articles! If there could be more interdisciplinary work to look at not just transpersonal psychology but these disciplines in general, then it could ensure that experts in a variety of fields who are also sympathetic to transpersonal psychology could regularly update the articles.

That focuses on military related historiographical articles (here). This focuses on Historiography in general. As far as I recall, archaeology and Oral history, to name but a few, aren't within their scop--Phoenix-wiki (talk · contribs) 16:57, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unitarian Universalism work group?

There has been a suggestion over on the WikiProject Religion talk page to create a work group or possibly separate project, depending on amount of interst, consisting of folks interested in articles related to Unitarian Universalism. So would anyone here be interested in joining in such an effort. --Devin Murphy (talk) 07:35, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Enough interest has been shown that I've created a work grou page at Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion/Unitarian Universalism work group. Please continue discussion there.  :) Aleta 19:05, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
