The iPhone 5 is a touchscreen-based smartphone developed by Apple Inc. It is the sixth and most recent generation of the iPhone. It was announced on September 12, 2012,[1] and is scheduled to begin shipping on September 21; it will be available for pre-order starting September 14.[2][3]

History

Speculations about the iPhone 5 and its specification arose shortly after the announcement of the iPhone 4S however detailed and substantial rumours and leaks did not emerge until June 2012.[4] As early as July 30, 2012, rumors pinpointed the exact date of announcement and release of the phone along with the speculated features of the phone.[5] On September 4, 2012, Apple sent invitations to an announcement event which was to be held on September 12, many media sources noted that the announcement event will be related to the next iPhone due to the shade that was produced in the image in the invitations.[6] On September 12, the iPhone 5 was announced and demonstrate at the media event that Apple held at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco. The phone will be available for pre-order from September 14 and available in-store on September 21 in United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.[7]

Features

Hardware

The iPhone 5 is 18% thinner, 20% lighter, and has 12% less overall volume than its predecessor, the iPhone 4S. The iPhone features an improved processor, dubbed the Apple A6, which is claimed to achieve twice the performance of the A5.[2][3] The iPhone 5 includes 4G LTE connectivity. The camera has improved low light performance, and is 40% faster than its predecessor's. The built-in rechargeable lithium-ion polymer battery is rated at 225 hours of standby time and 8 hours of talk time. In addition, the iPhone 5 has an improved 1,136 by 640 pixel display with a aspect ratio close to 16:9.

The iPhone 5 has storage capacities of 16, 32 or 64 GB and has two color options: black with black glass and slate gray colored metal trim, and white with white glass and silver colored metal trim.

The SIM will be a nano-SIM, which is smaller than the micro-SIM fitted to the iPhone 4 and 4S.[8]

Lightning connector

The iPhone 5 introduces a new dock connector, named Lightning, which replaces the older 30-pin dock connector on older iPhones / iPads / iPods. The Lightning connector is all digital and has 8-pins that are duplicated on both sides so a cable is reversible and works in either direction.[9]

Camera

The camera boasts an 8 mega-pixels iSight sensor, does 1080p HD video recording up to 30 frames per second with audio, face detection in video and still images, LED flash, improved video stabilization, photo and video geotagging. The iPhone 5 can now take panoramic photos at up to 28 mega-pixels.[10]
