Air Serbia is the national flag carrier of Serbia. It will commence operations once the flight operations of the current flag carrier JAT Airways are transferred to it after a transitional period. Its flight operations will be based at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport.
The airline was founded on 1 August 2013 following the signing of an agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and Etihad Airways. It will eventually be owned by the Serbian Government (51%) and Etihad Airways (49%) after Etihad Airways converts loans which it has and will make into equity.[1]
Air Serbia will lease two Airbus A319s from Etihad Airways during its initial launch and lease another eight A319s later in the year.[2] JAT Airways's fleet of Boeing 737-300s will be retired as and when Air Serbia's leased A319s arrive. However, JAT Airways' fleet of ATR72s will be transitioned to Air Serbia. The leased A319s will eventually be replaced with either 737 MAX or A320neo aircraft in a few years time.
Air Serbia will fly to all destinations in JAT Airways' current network of 33 destinations and it will also add services to Abu Dhabi, Banja Luka, Beirut, Bucharest, Budapest, Cairo, Kiev, Ljubljana, Prague, Sofia, Varna, and Warsaw (all of which, apart from Varna, were previously served by JAT Airways in the past).[3] Air Serbia's Belgrade-Abu Dhabi service will launch in October 2013 and will initially operate four times weekly but will increase to a daily service once Air Serbia's fleet has grown its fleet of A319s to facilitate an increased service.
