Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 213.205.251.100 (talk) at 09:03, 1 April 2017 (→‎Next: suggestion). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 16:53 on 18 September 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

  • should read citing as an example Freud (German for "joy"), who studied pleasure... —አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 06:32, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Would it not be more amusing for this day to have the caption for the picture be "Judge Judge"? The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 06:53, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Do you understand that April Fools hooks are supposed to be amusing? The informal language here emphasizes the joke. Gatoclass (talk) 03:36, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
"supposed to be amusing" seems appropriate here. The Rambling Man (talk) 07:19, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There was a huge kerfuffle on this at Template:Did you know nominations/The Winker's Song (Misprint), the original hook was "....that I'm a wanker" which I questioned but eventually passed since it seemed I had the minority view, then it was changed at the last minute. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 21:55, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's shite, pull it please. The Rambling Man (talk) 22:09, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Can Fram pull it, I think I've done my bit for that review. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 22:12, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't like the hook either, but I liked the alternative even less. And we don't have a viable substitute nom. Maybe somebody can come up with a better angle for the nom? Gatoclass (talk) 04:23, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
As the nominator, I feel that the one that is going to run was bulldozed through. The original one that I wanted was fine until about a week before today before people's personal preference came in and started interfering to change it. And now because of that, the article may not run? I don't think that's fair on me because I didn't want the "Winking is banned" hook, @Fram: please don't remove it because of this, please just change it to the hook that I had originally wanted. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 06:56, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Or we could merge the two and use "...that the BBC were banned from broadcasting I'm a Wanker? The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 07:18, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That's not very surprising or April Foolsish. I think EEng's suggestion about the song clearing dance floors was probably acceptable, but the hook fact isn't in the article. Gatoclass (talk) 07:37, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Here's a couple of suggestions:

- not great hooks by any means, but I am really struggling to come up with a viable angle for this one. Gatoclass (talk) 08:46, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have substituted the Johnny Rotten hook for now as nothing better has been proposed. Gatoclass (talk) 08:56, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The "bottle" hook is perfectly fine as it is. Gatoclass (talk) 03:02, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
On reflection, you may have a point. Anyone else with an opinion on this? Gatoclass (talk) 03:41, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think the suggested change reads slightly better, but the original ad refers to "a woman" so it could go either way... – Juliancolton | Talk 03:50, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
After testing it, it somehow just doesn't seem as eye-catching as the original. And after further reflection, there's nothing wrong with the original hook, "a woman" can mean "all women" as well so there is no difference in meaning, in which case on balance I think we should stick with the original hook.
