Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Espresso Addict (talk | contribs) at 22:10, 8 April 2018 (→‎OTD today: Linked). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 18:13 on 7 September 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

The sentence on Yi So-yeon calls her the second Asian woman in space, but depending on one's assumptions, this may not be true. "Asian" could mean a few different things, and if we mean "born in Asia," it looks like both Chiaki Mukai and Kalpana Chawla went first. I also don't see any mention in Yi's article of her being the second Asian woman in space, FWIW. Lusanaherandraton (talk) 08:52, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"On board Soyuz TMA-12, Yi So-yeon became the first Korean person to go into space." The word "person" seems superfluous. --Khajidha (talk) 15:52, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • 1740The Royal Navy captured the Spanish ship of the line Princesa (pictured) and mustered her into British service.
NAEPS, but "mustered" seems rather archaic and jargony. How about something simple like "transferred" or "pressed" – ?? Sca (talk) 21:40, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If it's such a major issue with a couple of hours to go, link Muster (military). The Rambling Man (talk) 21:47, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • "Aníbal Milhais's actions during the Battle of the Lys made him the only person to be awarded Portugal's highest military honour, the Order of the Tower and Sword, directly on the battlefield." the article says "A few months later, Milhais once again held back a German assault single-handed with his Lewis gun, allowing a Belgian unit to retreat safely to a secondary trench without casualties. Both the British observers present in the scene and the Belgian commander included his action in their reports.[1] Milhais was awarded the highest Portuguese distinction - the Order of the Tower and Sword - and the French Légion d'Honneur, delivered on the battlefield before 15,000 Allied soldiers.[1]" i.e. a few months after the Battle of Lys, he did something else notable and was thus awarded the honour, but not on the battlefield of the Battle of the Lys. The Rambling Man (talk) 08:03, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Worse than that: much of the article on Aníbal Milhais appears to be a copyvio (or at least a close paraphrase) of the first source cited more than a dozen times.[1] (all rights reserved). And in any event it is not clear to me why that web page is considered a reliable source. 213.205.198.170 (talk) 10:58, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed this and swapped in Vidkun Quisling, which is a featured article with no obvious concerns. Espresso Addict (talk) 21:29, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, good choice, it's a decent read, a few tiny tweaks applied. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:37, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Can you suggest another concise wording, The Rambling Man? Adjacent links are permitted where linking is useful & non-clumsy rephrasing to avoid isn't possible. Espresso Addict (talk) 21:29, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think, by now, I understand what constitutes useful and un-unuseful linking, but thanks for your reminder. The wording in the article itself is actually better than this contraction. Feel free to use that. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:31, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Fine. Done. Thank you for reporting. Espresso Addict (talk) 22:03, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You could now fix the pipe to the redirect, otherwise thanks to you too. The Rambling Man (talk) 22:07, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
