The Toyota Avanza (Japanese: トヨタ・アバンザ, Toyota Abanza) is a mini MPV designed by Daihatsu and marketed by Toyota.[1] It is produced in Indonesia[2] and also contract assembled in Malaysia (under Perodua) for the first generation model. Daihatsu designed and manufactures the vehicle, which is then sold by both Daihatsu and Toyota under Daihatsu Xenia (Japanese: ダイハツ・セニア, Daihatsu Senia) and Avanza nameplate respectively. Daihatsu supplies the vehicle to Toyota under a consigned production and OEM manufacturing agreement.[3] The "Avanza" name was taken from the Spanish word "avanza", which means "get moving" and Italian word "avanzato", which means "advance". The "Xenia" name was taken from the Greek word "Xenos", which means "guest" or "foreigner".[4]

The Avanza is a new model developed as an entry-level MPV. Its spiritual predecessor was the Kijang, whose model program has since been split to two different models (the other being the larger, more expensive Kijang Innova) to expand Toyota's reach in the MPV sector. Unlike the Kijang, Avanza uses an unibody chassis construction instead of ladder frame type.[5]

In addition to Indonesia and Malaysia, the Avanza is sold in Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Middle East, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia, Caribbean, Egypt, South Africa and various other African countries. A rebadged version of the car was sold in China under the FAW badge until 2010.

As of October 2011, there have been 1 million Avanza/Xenia units sold, including 113,000 exported units.[6][7] As of December 2018, the Avanza has been sold 1.7 million units,[8] and combined sales with Xenia up to 2.75 million units.[9]

History

The Avanza and Xenia were both conceived by the Indonesian subsidiary of Toyota and Daihatsu in the wake of the 1997 Asian financial crisis. At the time, the price of the larger Kijang already exceeded Rp 180,000,000, which was considered too expensive. Both companies were eventually collaborated to create a car that would be priced below the Kijang. After some market researches, design processes and production arrangements, the Avanza and Xenia were launched in November 2003 for the Indonesian market. The price was set at Rp 70,000,000 for the basic variant.

Initial sales target was 2,500–5,000 units per month, but the actual sales achievement exceeded 15,000 units. The first generation Avanza/Xenia was assembled in the first Indonesian Daihatsu plant in Sunter, Jakarta, while the second generation model is currently assembled at the second plant in Karawang, West Java.[10]

Engines

Introduced in December 2003, the Avanza is a 5-door MPV with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. It features a 1.3-liter K3-DE EFI petrol inline-four engine with a maximum output of 63 kW (84 hp; 86 PS) at 6,000 rpm (before 2006), a 1.3-liter K3-VE VVT-i petrol inline-four engine that produces 68 kW (91 hp; 92 PS) at 6,000 rpm and a 1.5-liter 3SZ-VE petrol inline-four engine that produces 76.5–80 kW (103–107 hp; 104–109 PS) at 6,000 rpm (until 2015). The Xenia uses a smaller 1.0-liter EJ-DE EFI petrol inline-three engine with a maximum output of 42 kW (56 hp; 57 PS) at 5,200 rpm (before 2006), a 1.0-liter EJ-VE EFI petrol inline-three engine with a maximum output of 46 kW (62 hp; 63 PS) at 5,600 rpm (until 2016) and both 1.3-liter K3-DE and K3-VE engines.

In 2015, the Avanza uses two new engines, consists of 1.3-liter 1NR-VE Dual VVT-i petrol inline-four engine that produces 71 kW (95 hp; 97 PS) at 6,000 rpm and 1.5-liter 2NR-VE Dual VVT-i petrol inline-four engine that produces 76.5 kW (103 hp; 104 PS) at 6,000 rpm. Its engine codes use -VE suffix instead of -FE because both engines are also used in Daihatsu cars.[11]

Markets

Indonesia

The Avanza was unveiled at the Gaikindo Auto Expo in July 2003, and launched in December 2003 and sold over 100,000 units that year. When the Avanza was launched in Indonesia, it was available in two models: the 1.3 E and 1.3 G, both with manual transmission. The Avanza later became one of the best selling cars in Indonesia.

In July 2004, the Avanza 1.3 S (series S) with automatic transmission launched to the market. The 1.3-litre engine was upgrade to use VVT-i (K3-VE) technology and individual direct ignition coils. Major changes in this version of Avanza occurred in the interior to change the odometer and digital tripmeter located beside the speedometer and tachometer. The braking system was upgraded to include anti-lock. The launch of this version is also designated as "test market" for the development plan of the all Avanza-Xenia VVT-i and Automatic Edition. This special edition comes with automatic transmission only. Only 200 units of Avanza Type S manufactured. A new exterior color (black) was added at the same time.

The Avanza was restyled in July 2006 with a new VVT-i engine, new grille, new bumpers, new interior, and new front and rear lamps.[18] In October 2006, the 1.3 S was replaced by the Avanza 1.5 S, using a new 1.5-liter, 16-valve DOHC VVT-i petrol engine along with the new anti-lock braking system. The 1.3 E and 1.3 G models were upgraded to use the 1.3-liter, 16-valve DOHC VVT-i petrol engine from the outgoing 1.3 S model.

The Avanza was updated in late 2008 with an addition of a chrome accent in the rear window, revamped interior and steering wheel with four spokes from the fifth generation HiAce (but without SRS airbag). In September 2009, the 1.3 G model receives automatic transmission option, followed by the 1.3 E model in May 2010.

Malaysia

In Malaysia, the Avanza is available in some models: 1.5 G, 1.5 S in automatic transmission, alongside 1.5 E and 1.3 E in both automatic and manual transmission.

In October 2006, the Toyota Avanza facelift was launched in Malaysia. It was available in two variants: 1.3E (manual and automatic) and 1.5G (automatic only).[19][20]

In October 2008, the Toyota Avanza was updated in Malaysia. It was available in four variants: 1.3E (manual and automatic), 1.5E (automatic only), 1.5G (automatic only) and 1.5S (automatic only).[21]

In December 2010, the Toyota Avanza was updated in Malaysia. The main change was the color of the interior to a dark color scheme. It was available in four variants: 1.3E (manual only), 1.5E (automatic only), 1.5G (automatic only) and 1.5S (automatic only).[22][23]

Philippines

In the Philippines, the Avanza has been offered since 2006 with two trim levels: J line with a 1.3-liter engine, having no power windows and locks, and only available with a manual transmission, while the G line has a 1.5-liter engine, and available with a five-speed manual transmission and a four-speed automatic transmission respectively. In 2008, the J line was made available without the third row seat. This particular line is popularly used as metered taxicabs in the Philippines; although it is sometimes mistaken for a UV vehicle with a dedicated route, like how its ancestors (Tamaraw FX and Revo) were utilized.

The Avanza was updated in 2008 with a new ceiling with grooves to improve airflow to the rear and a new interior colour scheme.

The Avanza has folding seats in the back, forming a third row of seats.

Daihatsu Xenia

The Avanza's twin model is the Daihatsu Xenia that powered by a 1.3-liter engine similar to the Avanza's, and a three-cylinder 1.0-liter engine with power and torque rating at 63 PS (46 kW; 62 hp) at 5,600 rpm and 92 N⋅m (68 lb⋅ft) at 3,600 rpm.[16]

The Xenia was sold in Indonesia and China only.

FAW Senya M80

In China, Daihatsu together with First Automobile Works (FAW) launched the first generation Xenia as the FAW-Jilin Senya S80 SUV on 21 June 2007. Production in China was carried out at FAW Jilin Auto until 2010.[24]
