Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Bzweebl (talk | contribs) at 09:24, 21 August 2020 (→‎Today's OTD: Reply). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 19:52 on 4 October 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

  • Lt. Col.: I don't think there's any good reason to abbreviate "Lieutenant Colonel" here; it should be expanded for the benefit of readers. — RAVENPVFF · talk · 04:27, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in "On this day"

  • You could probably fit all the people who observe Rosh Hashanah LaBehema nowadays in one room. It seems like a somewhat controversial statement to describe it as a Jewish observance in 2020. Why was it chosen to be listed? Bzweebl (talkcontribs) 06:50, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Unilaterally added by a self-described rabbi sysop Valley2city who has made 250 contributions in the last five years, here. Apparently this sort of thing is acceptable. What's also annoying is that the date of this observance isn't actually even cited. Perhaps admins who aren't really familiar with how things work shouldn't be making such edits (or be able to edit the main page). The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! While the date is correct (though it's actually disputed in the source Mishnah, as explained in the "origin" section on the observance's page), the fact that today is Rosh Chodesh Elul is far more relevant to 99.9% of Jews in 2020 than the fact that Rosh Chodesh Elul happens to have been observed as Rosh Hashanah LaBehema during the Second Temple period. Seems to me like an unnecessary POV addition. Bzweebl (talkcontribs) 07:07, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Not the point really. Articles in OTD should have their date reliably referenced, and not be in any doubt. I agree with the last point though, a self-declared rabbi probably ought not to be tinkering with the main page to include a Jewish observance. The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! I agree, was just adding on to that. Though I disagree that users professions should be used when assessing their contributions unless there is a clear COI, which I wouldn’t say is the case here. Bzweebl (talkcontribs) 09:24, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)This should probably be removed. The section in question is problematic, even without the CNs, because it's relation to the subject of the article is not clear (to me, someone unfamiliar with Jewish arcana). It appears to be a general description of the month within this holiday falls. Additionally, the sentence In 2012, the first guided ritual communal meals [...] were held [...] in major cities across the United States does not have support in the two references following.130.233.2.170 (talk) 07:25, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
