Maharashtra is the 3rd largest, 2nd most populous, 15th highest and 9th most literate state of the 29 states of the democratic Republic of India. Maharashtra is the wealthiest state in India, contributing 15% of the country's industrial output and 13.3% of its GDP (2006–2007 figures),[1] first in the country in case of tax revenue and GDP. Maharashtra is at 4th position in life expectancy and 19th in female-to-male sex ratio. Maharashtra is the 9th most media exposed states in India.
