Revision as of 12:04, 21 May 2021
Please submit error reports only for content that is currently or will imminently appear on the Main Page. For general discussion about the Main Page, kindly use its talk page. |
National variations of the English language have been extensively discussed previously:
|
To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.
- Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
- Offer a correction if possible.
- References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
- Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 02:09 on 18 October 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
- Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
- Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
- No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
- Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
- Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

- "... that Hampden Park's wooden square goalposts, which were used at Scotland's national football stadium between 1903 and 1987, ended up on the roof of an English pub?" - two things, 1) "square wooden" sounds much better than "wooden square" (shape comes before material, see eg Adjectives: order, and 2) while they spent time on top of an English pub, they ended up in a French museum. DuncanHill (talk) 13:40, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
- Maybe it could be ... that Hampden Park's wooden square goalposts, which were used at Scotland's national football stadium between 1903 and 1987, were placed on the roof of an English pub and ended up in a French museum? SL93 (talk) 13:43, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
- That still has the adjectives arse-about-face. DuncanHill (talk) 13:46, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
- I glazed over your sentence about adjectives. I just woke up. Sorry about that. SL93 (talk) 13:49, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
- ... that Hampden Park's square wooden goalposts, which were used at Scotland's national football stadium between 1903 and 1987, were placed on the roof of an English pub and ended up in a French museum? SL93 (talk) 13:50, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
- "...English pub before ending up in..." ? DuncanHill (talk) 13:54, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
- That sounds better. SL93 (talk) 13:56, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks all for the suggestions. The blurb has been revised as suggested by SL93 & DuncanHill. --PFHLai (talk) 03:24, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
- As the nominator, why was I not informed of this? Personally I'd rather not have the French museum reference because I feel it just drags out the hook and waters down the rivalry sting in it. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 05:27, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
- @The C of E: It looks like DuncanHill's contention was that "ended up" should be its final place, not intermediary. I have no opinion, but feel free to offer an alternative "fix".—Bagumba (talk) 09:18, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
- I just edited it as "were later placed on the roof of an English pub
before ending up in a French museum"—Bagumba (talk) 09:22, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

- @PFHLai: The adjectives are still the wrong way round - needs to be square wooden not wooden square. DuncanHill (talk) 08:55, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
- Adjective order switched now.—Bagumba (talk) 09:14, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

- "... that former Bangladeshi prime minister Tajuddin Ahmad earned a BA degree in law after taking his law examination in prison?" He wasn't a former PM when he got his degree, he was a future PM. And I'd prefer "a BA in law" or "a degree in law" to "a BA degree". I'd also prefer earnt to earned, but I understand this would confuse Americans. DuncanHill (talk) 13:48, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestions. The hook is now rewritten as

Errors in "On this day"
- 1991 entry: Is it really necessary to call Rajiv Gandhi the "former" Indian PM? The sentence makes it abundantly clear he died, which implies "former" by itself. Adding the word "former" could make it sound to some as though he was not PM at the time of his death, which is untrue. Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 03:55, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
- He served as PM from 1984 to 1989. The assassination took place in 1991, when he was Congress President. "Former PM" seems appropriate. No? --PFHLai (talk) 04:42, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
- Indeed, he wasn't PM at the time of his death so the current wording is perfectly apt. Unless, of course, the article is incorrect? The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 07:24, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
- Vishwanath Pratap Singh became PM after the 1989 Indian general election, a year and a half before the assassination. Not sure where in the article it is incorrect. --PFHLai (talk) 11:34, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
- No-one said the article was incorrect. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 11:39, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

- 1958 anti-Tamil pogrom - blurb "resulting in up to 300 deaths" article: "The estimates of the murders[8] range, based on recovered body count, from 158 to 1,500". The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 07:29, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing this out. The blurb is now revised to "...at least 158 deaths over the next few days." --PFHLai (talk) 11:29, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
