Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Freshacconci (talk | contribs) at 12:04, 15 March 2021 (Errors with "In the news": Billie Eilish's Everything I Wanted). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 12:53 on 19 November 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors with "In the news"

  • I'm not sure that the copyright tag for the Exchange Online logo is the correct one. I cannot find anything on any Microsoft website that suggests that their logos are licensed under Creative Commons. In fact, here, it says Microsoft logos, including our well-known product names such as Windows, Microsoft Office, and Xbox, are some of the most recognized, trusted, and valuable trademarks in the world. Microsoft logos may only be used in compliance with Microsoft's trademark and brand guidelines. No other use is permitted. And I couldn't find anything else under "Microsoft's trademark and brand guidelines". Hopefully someone more knowledgeable in copyright stuff can chime in.  Bait30  Talk 2 me pls? 02:16, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • I second Bait30's comments; I came here to address my concerns, but they've made the same points I was going to make. Also, why are we using a logo as the image for ITN in the first place? Isn't that a little bland? To me, ITN photos should show current events unfolding, and this is only tangentially related to a current event. RunningTiger123 (talk) 04:03, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, but suggestions for an alternate image? Not sure we want to go back to 2021 Australian Open, and none of the other articles featured have particularly good images to use. — The Earwig (talk) 04:29, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Right now, if we've determined that the current image isn't usable, that should take precedent over aesthetic concerns. Let's go to the tennis image pronto and then figure out a better fix. AllegedlyHuman (talk) 07:13, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • The licence tag, by an uploader with no other contributions, is extremely dubious. However, it might be PD-simple; several other Microsoft logos of comparable complexity have been kept in previous deletion discussions on Commons. --Paul_012 (talk) 07:33, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • minus Removed, and the tennis pic restored. Aside from the licensing issue, I'd question whether we should be featuring a logo in the ITN picture slot anyway. It doesn't really help with understanding the story, and is similar to the use of a flag in a story about a country, which we usually reject. As well as WP:NOTPROMO issues. If the tennis rolls off the bottom and there's nothing else to use, it is always an option to have no pic at all.  — Amakuru (talk) 07:44, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Per WP:MOS song titles should be in quotation marks not italics. Billie Eilish's "Everything I Wanted" is in italics in ITN. It looks like it's an album title. freshacconci (✉) 12:04, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
